Prior to Even Stevens there had only been about 4 winners of the Double(it didn't apply to other doubles as races like the Doncaster/Sydney Cup etc were different sets of horses for each race anyway) the four that I can remember were Posiedon1906/The Trump 1937/Rivette1939 and Rising Fast in 1954 none of which did a lot of damage to the bookies Australia wide, while during that time probably close to 100 horses had tried the double and failed so the bookies weren't afraid of something that happened 1 in 25 times,

They were taken completely by surprise by an NZedder with ordinary form (I am sure from memory he was 5 or 6 year old too) and unqualified, they bet phenominal odds pre-post about him, the money started coming for him from a long way out, just a dribble at first then slowly increasing in volume like a snowball by the time the race came around they knew they had been taken, he was beaten in a Welter by a horse named Mamburdi then won the Weribee Cup( a pretty important Country Cup back then) he was in the Caulfield Cup with 7 Stone 8 pounds and bolted in,

Even the Handicapper new he had been taken, he then gave Even Stevens the full 10 pound penalty for the Melbourne Cup(the only time I can remember the Handicapper handing out the full penalty allowed by the rules in any race)

Even Stevens carried 8 stone 4 pounds to an easy win in the Melbourne Cup and left Bookies with a huge payout, it wasn't just the amount of money either it was the "con" that went with it, they felt more violated than a rape victim, they didn't see it coming,

As an aside to the victory as if to rub salt into the wounds and prove just what a certainty he was in the Cups with the light weight the following Saturday he annihilated The Champions Sky High and Aquanita in the WFA C.B. Fisher Plate over 2400 metres

I am pretty sure it has only been since Even Stevens that they have been careful with the same horse in Doubles

So.....if you were taking a double, i would hope you wouldnt leave Pinker Pinker
out of your Caulfield Cup calculations.

Currently $26, was super first up, and will probably shorten after its next run.

JP

The reasons the double bookies were conned and kept letting punters on prior to the horse winning a welter before running in the Caulfied Cup were

A. Two weeks prior to the Caulfield Cup the horse had not arrived by boat ( the normal way to be transported from NZ to Aust )

B. The horse was not qualified for either Cup prior to arriving

However, the owner Sir James Wattie, a multi millionaire  in NZ who founded Wattie Industries Ltd , charted an aircraft to fly the horse to Melbourne, to become the first Melbourne Cup winner to be flown to Australia, thus hoodwinking the double bookies into believing that the horse would not arrive to run in the Cups .

I thought Fawkners run had Epsom Handicap written all over it.

I thought Masked Marvel didn't look particularly interested in racing on Saturday.  :chin:

So did I & I was surprised they went back to Melbourne with him, still he went great back there but reckon he would have been right there in the Epsom.
