Top sprinting mare, Bounding, was sold to American interests (Stonestreet) at the MM breeding stock sale a few years back for AUD$1.9m.

Seemed plenty at the time, but less so this morning, when her first foal, a colt by Curlin, sold to Godolphin for US $4.1m.

Highest price paid at the sale for the best part of 10 years.

An even bigger day on Day 3 for Leslie's Lady, the 22yo dam of champion Beholder and Coolmore stallion, Mendelssohn, as her American Pharoah yearling filly is hammered down to Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm for US$8.2m.

Coolmore and Godolphin amongst the underbidders apparently.

Ms Pope was hoping to get her for around the $4m mark.

US racing  ............... what is going on here?

These are big bets into an industry that, many observations suggest, no longer has a big following in the US.

I have been in Chicago and Washington on 'big three' days and was hard pressed to find avenue with a live-broadcast and  far from home in terms of getting a bet on locally.

......... even in Vegas  ... by 2011........there was no exclusive racing venue  ...... racing was no longer a flavour --   20 years earlier ..... one walked in...... was given a copy of their 'Sportsman' ........ a complimentary G&T ........ and welcome to have another.

JUSTIFY that

Triple Crown winner Justify would have been 12 times over the legal hyoscine limit had the numbers in his reported failed drug test been recorded in Australia.
