COMPENSATION FOR GREYHOUND RACING PARTICIPANTS?

Now that greyhound racing is to be summarily outlawed in NSW, the discussion should extend to the compensation that reasonably should be paid to industry stakeholders disadvantaged as a consequence.

As to the source of funds for such compensation, the obvious sources are the 'take' from the additional betting on alternative options -- and not least the total 'take' from betting with the NSW TAB on greyhound races run in other states.

I would be surprised if anyone would be against a compensation scheme -- especially those touting the benefit of closing the industry in NSW.

In short, I do not believe the government can simply 'pull the rug' from under the industry without fairly compensating those then so materially disadvantaged financially.

Now we agree on something Peter   emthup

I've heard plenty of 'simple' excuses where the do-gooders suggest we should just love our dogs and be happy. If you derived your income from greyhound racing, how to you survive or even mantain what you have without an income?

For a start I don't earn my living from greyhound racing so I'll be fine and my two will live out their days on my back step (one there now) but what about those that do? I know of many, many people who have invested heavily in infrastructure, plant, set up and the like that will now basically be worthless.

Even myself, I purchased two girls specifically on breeding & conformation to hopefully breed on after racing, not for any other reason than for enjoyment but if I could sell some pups and fund my own involvement I'd be happy. Well now my investment is worthless.

Current market value for pups from my girls is $2k a pup from 1 & around $3.5k from the other. That's before either has a pup to the track which would only push the prices higher. You do the maths :tears:

This is setting aside that this ban will destroy a breed of dog and some of the worlds best lineage.

Just one vet is asking for $6 million,  with only $30 million proposed, after the vets, meat producers, stud masters, then Wheeler and Hallinan, RSPCA etc, I cant see any rank and file greyhound people getting anything.

Baird is a punisher.

I have 4 kennels, hydrobath, walking machine etc that has had time & money put into and all basically worth nothing now. The reality is I'm just a small nobody.

I can't see how they are going to be able to do it Sunliner as nothing will ever be adequate. How do you put a price on a way of life?
