6 heats of the Cranbourne Cup tonight, with the $67,000 final being held on January 9.
My ratings and thoughts.
Heat 1 - Blazin Bomber drawn the pink and a winner of the Cranbourne Puppy Classic here in August. Did beat a good field that day which included Dyna Double One and Kayda Shae. Has started 12 times from boxes 6,7 & 8 for 5 wins and has run 5.41 to the first mark before. Above All winner of over $220k has drawn the 1. Winner of a Hobart Thousand heat and placed 4th in the final behind Unlawful Entry. Can be a little tardy early, but has run decent first splits in it's wins at The Meadows and Sandown. He's So Good a winner of 3 from 4 here with a 30.11 PB, but doesn't look to be the most reliable beginner, but the vacant 5 may help his chances. Weblec Belle a knock out chance from the 3.
Heat 2 - Over Limit the Ballarat track record holder lines up against Hobart Thousand winner and Ballarat Cup runner up Unlawful Entry. Hard to split both of them, but give the nod to Over Limit due to better early pace. Bare Bones from the 6 is my 3rd rater, should position itself in the first few and has a decent PB here.
Heat 3 - Ratings surprise here. Has thrown up the 7 Bewdy Banjo as the top pick. Slowish beginners on either side help it's case, and I expect it to be near the lead going past the post first time round. Secret Spell from the 5 comes in 2nd pick, talented dog, but dropping back from a 650m Sale Cup campaign, query on how much earl;y pace it will show. Ballarat Cup winner Shared Equity comes in as the 3rd pick, a bit worried about the 2 moving right at the start.
Heat 4 - Not a strong heat to my eye. Starlight Jack comes up as top rater. Reasonable beginner and has a slick 29.38 to its credit at Sale. Moderate beginner and 2nd rater Rare Pearl on its inside and Waymore's Blues not overly flash either. Old stager Mepunga Armagh is the 3rd rater, 3 wins from 4 at the track with a 30.10 PB however it's late 2013 form.
Heat 5 - Absolutely no confidence in this race. Front running stayer Star Recall comes in at 1. To The Galo's was a slick winner at Geelong. Aeroplane Jack to fill the 3rd spot.
Heat 6 - Tommy Brislane comes in as top rater. Reasonable wins at WP (29.64, 29.70) and a 25.79 win at Warragul all came from the middle pins. Slow beginner Xtreme Knocka is the second rater who will need a bit of luck in running. Spokesman likes Cranbourne, has won from the 7 and 8 box here, should get a decent run with Jailor Bale in the 7, but lacks the class of the top two.
