not just confined to horses, i note with interest the last race at  Yarra Valley today, a titanic struggle with 2 horses head and head in the last 100 meters, winner driven by Graeme "pop" Lang just edging out Brian Gath, with Craig Demmler (son of the Teddy Bear) a close 3rd, 3 of the biggest harness names in the last 40 years, Lang Gath and Demmler   :noteworthy:  I think John McGuiness's horse ran 4th, he's no spring chicken either. They have these young driver race series now, should have one for the oldies     I'll back Uncle Brian  ;)

A jockey has just had his first drive in a harness race at Penrith for trainer John Tapp.  Brian Wood sat in the death from a wide gate and his horse tired to finish near the tail. He still has his jockey license, i dont think theere is anyone else in NSW that has a dual license, there's a couple in Perth, S.J. Miller used to drive and ride, but nowadays i think he's only training. Interestingly, Brian Wood has a * next to his name indicating a junior claim        He's old enough to be some rival drivers grandfather

7/2 out to 7's, sits wide and capitulates. Looks like Woods had a dream start to his harness career and did everything expected :)

Not junior claims any more, they are concessional claims for inexperienced drivers.

Think this thread should be moved from Harness and greys to a more "common" area.

Riceman, a 12 year old, brought his career earning to approx 550,000 with a win in Adelaide.

special mention to NZ jockey Noel Harris (now age 58), aka NGH or Harry

http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/features/7556488/Legend-Harry-still-has-the-magic

Had only 5 rides last Saturday at ELLERSLIE on a heavy track (June 1st)

Here's how they went

Race 4  DARK BISHOP  1st  $5.50
Race 5  PERFECT START  1st  $5.50
Race 6  ARNOLD   1st  $10
Race 7  POSTMANS DAUGHTER  1st  $5.10

no ride in race 8, got his breath back

Race 9  OUR ESSENCE  1st  $11

all up for $1 at best TAB odds got something in the order of $17,000 (and even higher with Betfair)

On a klosely related theme, veteran Polish-born Slovak Miroslav Klose representing Germany managed to surprise recently at Lazio when scoring 5.

Then being benched at the 68 minute mark, when on the cusp of a stunning record!

Now he's had a goal (and cigar?) disallowed for off-side in the USA friendly, which would have had him on par with Mueller as Germany's top boot.

Not sure if this is Mundine - Nani impression is genuine, but it challenges the aphorism:

White men can't jump!

Does anyone know the age of NSW harness driver Jim (C.J.) Castles ?, he just punched one around at Menangle that was a 100-1 shot (and ran accordingly) I know for a fact he was driving in the late 60's and Tappy interviewed him around 2-3 years ago and he said he had no thoughts of retiring, he looks well over 70  :chin: Is there a mandatory retirement age for trot drivers, i remember a guy in Melb was driving and he was around 80 Len Orwin it was from memory  He (Castles) has driven in the same colours all his life

Funny to see Convent Hill has only been stepped up to 1600m lately for 3 runs in her 81 start career, which now includes a 1st,2nd & a 1st in the city over the mile.    :o

Two drivers going around tonite at Bathurst, one has finally had his last drive, he's in his 70's and has been driving for decades, once had a top liner called King Frost. his name is IAN MUTTON.  he has decided not to renew his licence. The other driver is WAYNE HONAN, who i know still trains, but rarely drives these days
