"TROT TACTICS"  16/11/2019..

The Marburg Pacing Association's fundraiser, which was a raffle for a service to the trotting stallion, My High Expectations, was drawn last Monday at Albion Park, by David Brick, Racing Queensland's Manager Harness. The lucky winner was Glass house Mountains  trainer Terry Hancock, and he will be putting the well bred and well performed mare, Mexican Invasion,to the horse. My High Expectations, a Clive Palmer import, raced his entire career in Australasia winning one race from 10 starts in NZ, and a further 33 in NSW and Vic, for massive earnings of $482,000. The MPA thanks Troy Williams (lessee) and Darren Reay  of Medowie Lodge Stud for their generosity ,and all those who bought tickets.

After the dust has settled following the highs of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, megabuck turnover, megabuck prize money, fashions of the glitterati, and international racing celebrities, we have the lows of whips and the treatment of horses at an export abattoir facility north of Brisbane. We are no longer in the "Age Of The Horse". Our four legged mates, who are in the main, "purpose bred" for sporting or racing pursuits, are born, live and perform in a society who love a bet. This is borne out by the incredible amount of money bet across the Melbourne Cup Carnival, proving that the potential to restore both codes of equine racing lies in the lounge room. The sooner that Racing Supremos understand that the whip must Go, and that abattoirs must learn that the un-rehomable ( they do exist, as any responsible horseman can attest) must be treated with total consideration and kindness in the process, the sooner that Gallops and Harness will rebuild the public support they once had. The simple truth is that we ignore public opinion at our peril. What was acceptable in the "Age Of the Horse" will not wash today, and it is Racing which has to change, not the potential punters!!

Watch this space next week when North Queensland LNP Senator, Susan McDonald, backs the return of harness to Townsville!!

The following is an update on the track resurfacing projects at Redcliffe and Albion Park over the last few weeks.  Racing will resume at Albion Park on Thursday afternoon ahead of the up-coming TAB Queensland Summer Harness Racing Carnival. Over the past fortnight, Racing Queensland, in conjunction with the Albion Park Harness Racing Club, has conducted minor works to the home turn, along with a track resurface to ensure the venue is in pristine condition ahead of the up-coming black-type races. At the same time, APHRC used the outage to install a new Colorbond fence in the section where the works were being conducted.
During this time, the newly renovated Redcliffe Paceway accommodated the majority of re-scheduled Albion Park meetings, with the track record falling not once but twice.
On Saturday night, the Donny Smith trained and Nathan Dawson driven, Always In Command, rated a 1:54.3 mile rate, bettering the previous 1:54.4 mark set by the Jack Butler trained Sams The Master (Brendan Barnes) seven days earlier.
“Redcliffe has done a wonderful job shouldering the scheduling load whilst repairs have occurred at Albion Park,” RQ Chief Operating Officer Adam Wallish said.
“It’s a credit to the Redcliffe staff to have the new track performing so strongly. “We’re looking forward to racing returning to Albion Park on Thursday ahead of the up-coming Summer Carnival.”Earlier this year, RQ announced the $50,000 DJA Trotting Championship would be elevated to Group 1 status as part of this year’s Summer Carnival.
In total, Albion Park will host three black-type races next month commencing on Saturday, December 7 with the Group 3 Be Good Johnny Sprint.
Heats for the DJA Trotting Championship will commence on the same evening and will continue ahead of the Final on Saturday, December 21 which will be run in conjunction with the $50,000 Group 2 Queensland Cup.The 2019 TAB Queensland Summer Harness Racing Carnival will feature five meetings throughout December at Albion Park and Redcliffe.

Taleah McMullen has her turn at the top of the driver's board this week, steering four winners beating Adam Sanderson. Top trainer was John McMullen, three to Adam Sanderson on two. Most pleasing, Wecanonlyhope. Chalk one up for Lacey Hinze. Ipswich factor 19/44.

TROT TACTICS" 23/11/2019..

Again we mourn. This time it is to mark the passing of former long serving Albion Park Committeeman, Darryl Brennan. A man with his heart and his love of the light harness sport fixed firmly in the right place,DB was known for his efforts to promote "amateur" driving, as a pathway to bring new and enthusiastic blood into the base of the harness pyramid. For a period of time he organised two and sometimes three amateur events to be run between races on a Saturday night, with the drivers racing for saddlery and supplement vouchers. A thorough gentleman, dapper of dress with an optimistic outlook on life, Darryl Brennan enjoyed no support whatsoever from his fellow committeemen, the bulk of whom saw the term "amateur" as an obscenity. We will never know if Darryl Brennan was on the right track as his initiatives were derailed. But he must be remembered as a giver not a taker, and remembered with a great sense of loss, not only of the man,but of his values!

Right from the heart of  the Greater Ipswich footprint is the good news story that Gun reinsman, Matt Elkins, will represent Queensland at the 2019 Australasian Young Drivers Championship in New Zealand from December 7 to December 13. The Calvert-based 23-year-old was selected because of his personal best 110 wins last season. He was the State’s top junior reinsman in 2018-2019 and will now compete against nine of Australasia’s best juniors. They a Matt Elkins (QLD), Cameron Hart (NSW), Zac Phillips (VIC), Conor Crook (TAS), Brodie Webster (SA), Corey Peterson (WA), Sarah O’Reilly (NZ) Benjamin Butcher (North Island, NZ), John Morrison (South Island, NZ), and defending champion, Sheree Tomlinson (NZ).
Elkins said he was rapt to be flying the maroon colours across the Tasman. “It’s an honour. I’m very proud to be representing Queensland. I will certainly be giving it my best shot and won’t be going there to run second,” Elkins said. He said he would like to emulate the feat of his partner, Narissa McMullen, who won the Australasian Junior Driving Title in 2017 in Brisbane. “And being selected to represent Queensland in harness racing is extra special. It is a very nice reward and caps off a lot of hard work,” he added.
Elkins said he was looking forward to his first visit to New Zealand, especially getting the chance to drive on three left-handed tracks and the unique right-handed (clockwise) Alexandra Park 1,000m circuit in Auckland, on the final night. The races will be run at Addington Raceway (Saturday December 7); Methven (December 8); Manawatu (December 10 and 12); and Alexandra Park (Friday December 13). Trot tactics is delighted to see Matt Elkins get an opportunity on one of those potentially life changing spring boards. We wish him luck in his draw for horses. He will drive them well, but a consistent lack of horsepower can destroy his chances. Finger's crossed!!!.
Let's hope that the hot and unpleasant weather takes a day off on Monday. The Marburg Pacing Association has a solid program set down for decision in the afternoon time slot. The UTAB van will be on course, the barbecue and the bar will be in operation. Exciting racing on the 700 metre circuit where you can see all the back straight action with the naked eye. Adults $5 ,Members and Pensioners $3 and the all important race book $3. Gates open 11.00am, first race ....

Word has it that a legal decision this week has opened the path for Racing Queensland to sell Albion Park. What ever is realised on any sale, and it should be the absolute top of the market, harness should not start partying just yet. The make up of the Racing Queensland Board is such that the silks and sulkies set will possibly get some crumbs. The first alarm bells were heard when it was revealed that harness would not be included in the Yamanto project for the dogs. A site in a high growth area with exceptional highway access and a large horse population is not on, it seems. If I was a betting man, my money would be on a controversial site at Yatala. Should that prove to be the case, the sale of one and the purchase of the other, could provide the ingredients of a best seller!

Back to the ongoing saga of Townsville. Last week I promised you the full contents of a letter from LNP Senator for Queensland,Susan McDonald, to Stirling Hinchcliffe Minister for Racing..  This week, due to intervening events and space constraints, I bring you the book ends of the communique. (open italics) Dear Stirling. I write in support of the re-establishment of harness racing in Townsville, and I am asking that you extend all and any assistance to those trying to facilitate it. ---- I would add that the North Queensland Harness Racing Club Inc has 500 members, so what's really needed now, is some encouragement from the governing body and the Minister to complement the hard work being done by hopeful participants... Senator Susan McDonald--29/10/2019..(close italics)..

A shift on the driver's side of the leader board, with high scoring Taleah McMullen scoring on six occasions, eclipsing brother Pete on half that number. Just to keep it in the family, John McMullen was leading trainer with three winners to his credit. Most pleasing was a welcome dead heat. Jacob wallace with Royal Lincoln at headquarters, and Bruce (long time between drinks) Wyborn preparing Tascott Lady to score at Recliffe on Wednesday night.

"TROT TACTICS" 30/11/2019..

In recent times we have been concentrating  on happenings outside the Ipswich footprint, and while doing so we have missed reporting a number of im portant local sucesses . A recent Albion Park victory went the way of Dollarbill one of the on fire Kay Crone team. The race had added significance as it was the final of a Marburg to Albion Park Series. These  particular events are designed to give "joe average " hobbyist a chance to race a horse on Saturday night for far better prize money than that available at "the Burg". Dollarbill, a wagga NSW product is not exactly a novice, having stats to this week of 133 starts for 17 wins, 10 seconds and 11 thirds for $86,465. With Adam Richardson in the cart, the gelding was able to defeat Taylor Hood and Tap The Keg, the margins being 7.5 m x 8.0m in a rate of 1-57.1. The Crone- Richardson combination continued on their winning way with Grinydontcha at Redcliffe on Wednesday night.

Booval hobby horseman, Bruce Wyborn, trained his first Redcliffe winner, and first since the 2012-13 season at ‘The Triangle’ last Wednesday (November 20). “I was tickled pink and was jumping up and down on the same spot all the way down the straight. To say I was excited was a huge understatement,” the 51-year-old Ipswich City Council employee said. It was his Modern Art mare, Tascott Lady, which gave Wyborn his moment of glory. He owns the 7-year-old bay, and bred her with Sherilea Litzow, and Colin McCoombes, who both live in Queensland.

Narissa McMullen did the driving and got Wyborn’s pride and joy home by a head.“I just want to thank Narissa for her wonderful drive. In fact I want to show my gratitude to the whole McMullen family, especially Taleah, who has done a lot of the driving for me. She’s my regular go-to-driver, but I have used them all.“The McMullans have all helped me become a better horseman. John and Jeannette have been wonderful. I have done quite a bit of work with my horses at John’s stable. He has been a brilliant mentor to me. I have learnt so much,” Wyborn said.

Queensland’s only representative in the 2019 Inter Dominion Championship at Alexandra Park, the Kevin Seymour owned and Grant Dixon trained Colt Thirty One, has settled in well to his South Auckland surroundings. he is under the general supervision of John Green,a very capable trainer, well known in Queensland from his stay of several years about the time of the millenium. Green had this to say about the Queensland hope.  “He looks really happy. He’s in a paddock of his own because he’s a stallion, and I’m looking at him as we speak. He’s standing as still as a statue looking out at other horses at Tony Herlihy’s neighbouring property.“He’s hardly moved from his spot. He looks an absolute picture. He seems to be thriving here. Australia’s other good chance in the Series – Bling It On, is also staying with us in a paddock not too far away.”

In another initiative, bound to be the focal point for the current crop of young drivers, Harness Racing Australia, in partnership with Aldebaran Park and leading Swedish media company, Travronden have today announced a once-in-a-lifetime driver exchange program for the leading Australian and leading Swedish young drivers.
The three year agreement will see the leading Australian driver in the Australasian Young Drivers Championship (AYDC) invited to drive in the famed Swedish Guldklockan (Gold Watch) series, held at Sovalla, Stockholm in December each year.
Conversely, the winner of the Gold Watch will be invited to compete in the AYDC the following year, being the first time a non-Australasian driver will compete in the series since its inception in 1993.

From the race track to the race track of the future. One would have thought, that Racing Queensland, in their wisdom and considering their much publicised  modest financial position, would at least have considered adding a 1000 metre harness track to the proposed venue at Yamanto. As yet no such proposal has emerged from the halls of power, both racing administrative, and political. After all two venues for almost the price of one makes economic sense at least. Add excellent highway access, a housing boom and a very large harness horse population in the Ipswich footprint, and Racing Queensland would be well on the way to a winner. If they want to be!!!

A bit of pushing and shoving on both sdies of the leader board this week. Pete McMullen top driver with seven wins, Narissa McMullen and Hayde Barnes fighting out the placings on four and three. Chantal turpin leading trainer with five winners, hotly pursued by Kay Crone on three. Most pleasing, Eulo Flyer for Dale Belford. Ipswich factor 25/47..

TROT TACTICS"  07/12/2019..

A side issue, yet central  to the longevity of the light harness sport in Australasia, and coming  from the current Inter-dominion Series, was the award made to kiwi icon, Charlie Hunter. The long-time servant of harness racing was presented with an award for distinguished service by the Inter Dominion Event Committee and Hunter said the honour was a pleasant surprise. “I had been asked to accept the role as the Inter Dominion ambassador and at the function the other night one thing led to another,” he said. “It was a nice surprise. You don’t do the things you do in your life looking for acclaim and awards, but it is very nice when you are recognised, particularly from an Australasian viewpoint. “I have enjoyed everything I have done in harness racing, whether it be administration, training, or driving.”

The latest from RQ on local efforts to bring harness back to North Queensland. "Hi Troy. I refer to your latest email. I again acknowledge your interest and passion to re-establish harness racing in Townsville. However, as I have detailed in previous correspondence, the Townsville Showgrounds and Turf club proposals are not financially viable . They are also not practical or commercially sustainable. I do not propose to reply to your latest lot of queries below. RQ restates its interest in reviewing the situation in the next three to five years". Adam Wallish . Manager RQ. ... I am sure that the good harness folk of Townsville would be less than impressed with the above dismissal of their project.

Perhaps for us still engaged in the "sport for some and industry for others" here in the South East, Mr Wallish might enlighten us as to his immediate plans  to reverse the six million dollar loss incurred by harness in Queensland last financial year (RQ figures), as, if we have no investment funds for Townsville, then we cannot support the current haemorrhage here. As yet, there has been put forward not one initiative that is likely to improve turnover. Like the elephant in the room, no one is to mention it, just wait and hope that it will go away. Sadly, it won't until it sees a punter friendly betting product. Currently we are as far from that requisite as the Earth is from the Moon!

RWWA Stewards Policy – The Use of Joggers Introduction A jogger is defined as a specialised trailer either towed behind, or attached to the rear of a motorised vehicle which is used for the purpose of exercising horses. Joggers may be used to exercise both Standardbred and Thoroughbred horses under the directions of this policy.  Horses must not be tied directly to any enclosed motorised vehicle, or led by hand directly from an enclosed motorised vehicle, at any time.  Inappropriate or unsafe use of joggers can potentially result in both animal welfare and human occupational health and safety issues and as such any risks should be mitigated by a policy to guide the safe use of joggers. Read the rest of this on the harness website in "industry news". The message is well intentioned, just over-regulated, and I am sure it will migrate from WA before we know it.

With the exception of one result, the jam was wide spread on the drivers board this week, Adam Sanderson was the name in lights, scoring on five occasions from Pete McMullen on three with Narissa McMullen  and Hayden Barnes on two apiece. Chantal Turpin led in two winners which put her in the trainer's top spot. Most pleasing, Charas Accent for Mitchell Dawson  with Chloe Butler in the sulky. Ipswich factor 22/45..

  "TROT TACTICS"  14/12/2019..

The Christmas celebration is just a few days away And, for a warm up, Marburg is racing  tomorrow week, Sunday, December 22nd. Slip out to "the Burg"  for a great day's racing, with all the green and red festive trimmings. Obviously we can't do snow, but we will have plentiful supplies of economically priced cold beverage , Christmas burgers and other various eats plus desserts, a great lead in to Wednesday's Feast. TAB Van on course, 'funny money" bookie, "pick the last seven", now worth $1900 (share) Santa, mini-trotters, and a free supervised water slide for the kids, plus a Christmas raffle. Highlight  it on your Calendar as the last Marburg meeting for 2019. Adults $5, Members and Pensioners $3 and the all important race book $3.See next Saturday's QT for gate times etc.

A lot of people believe in the expression or description of "dumb animals" when applied to bulk numbers of four legged creatures. Spend a long time with horses, and you find that the above does not always apply. An illustration of this occurred after Race 2, the Walloon Bakery Maiden Pace at Marburg last Sunday.  The winner was Bronski Baby, raced by Norm Annetts, trained by Trent Hodges and driven by Noel Parrish. Just a neat little gelding, modestly endowed with ability, but, after the post race interview, BB went back down to the stable area as if he had just won the Inter-dominion. His head was high, his ears pricked and a spring in his step. Centre stage at last. He knew he had won, and was as proud as a peacock about the whole business.  Sentimental rubbish - don't think so! It's 'horses for courses" and Bronski Baby is likely to score again at Marburg in the near future.

What was once the absolute pinnacle of Australasian  harness racing will be decided in Auckland NZ tonight.(begin italics) Kiwi brothers Mark and Barry Purdon are poised to dominate Saturday night’s Inter Dominion Pacers Grand Final at Alexandra Park, Auckland with several runners making the Grand Final in Australasia’s biggest harness event. This also applies to the Trotters Grand Final with the Mark and Natalie Rasmussen trained Winterfell drawing beautifully in gate two. Throughout the series, Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen’s All Stars Barn have provided winners each night with red hot favourite Ultimate Sniper going through undefeated, Cruz Bromac winning a heat after being placed in the other two, while Chase Auckland finished second on all three occasions. The Fixer and Ashley Locaz also raced well enough to make the cut. Barry’s A G’s White Socks was the surprise of the series, winning two heats and Mach Shard was consistent all the way through. With seven of the twelve starters, it will be a huge shock should any other stable receive the accolade of preparing the winner. Looking at the Trotters Final which goes before the Pacers, it appears that the Purdon/Rasmussen team will prevail with short priced favourite Winterfell due to his perfect gate two draw.(close italics)

Sadly, the replacement of the traditional standing start  with realistic handicaps went by the board years ago, and what really was Australasia's supreme test of the standardbred at both gaits, became yet another victim of the mobile barrier. However, some of the kudos remains, and we should give the NZ expert opinion of the main chances in both Grand Finals.....
The  Trotters.. SELECTIONS : (2) WINTERFELL, (10) Habibi Inta, (9) Temporale, (4) Majestic Man.
The Pacers..  SELECTIONS : (5) ULTIMATE SNIPER, (9) Cruz Bromac, (9) Chase Auckland, (7) A G’s White Socks.

Hi flyers on the leader board this week, With Pete McMullen  top scoring driver with seven wins, Narissa McMullen close up on six, and Kelli Dawson right in there, getting the nod on four occasions. Trainers, John McMullen and Ron Sallis tied the trainer's result with four winners apiece.  Chantal Turpin just handy, leading in three of the best. Most pleasing ..TeamTurpin McMullen  getting the first Summer Carnival feature with Mattgregor. Ipswich Factor 27/50..
