This week’s bombshell. After last week’s ‘trot tactics” opinion that Natalie Rasmussen would be at the top of the harness tree for a long time to come, the lady has exercised a woman’s privilege, and announced that she, and partner, Mark Purdon, are taking a year off from the spotlight. The following, hot off the websites, says most of it. (commence italics).  All Stars Racing, the all-conquering harness racing stable of champion trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, will cease training from December 31. The pair remain together as a couple but has decided to take a year away from training horses and if and when they choose to return it will be on a much smaller scale than the huge operation they run at Rolleston on the outskirts of Christchurch. Their state of the art property will remain open but be run by current stable foreman Hayden Cullen and his wife Amanda, with Purdon and Rasmussen happy to help out around the times of the major carnivals if needed. But the days of the All Stars machine which has dominated harness racing on both sides of the Tasman and is clearly one of the best in the world, are over.
“It is time for a break,” Purdon told the New Zealand Herald newspaper. “Between us Nat and I have been training or working with horses almost 70 years combined,” says Purdon who is 56. Rasmussen is 43.“We want to have a break, freshen up and take time to enjoy life next year. “And during that break we will take time to consider what our future looks like.” Purdon says he will retain his race driving licence so he can still drive at major race meetings but Rasmussen is still considering whether she will. “Hayden is a good young trainer and we have made a commitment to him that at least initially we will drive the horses at major carnivals if needed.
“We have told him we are happy to come help out leading in to these carnivals but the stables are going to be his with his wife Amanda’s and the business will be theirs, definitely not ours. “All Stars Racing will be closed down from December 31 and if we even come back to training full time I would say it would be a on a lot smaller scale. “But that is something we will think about during our year off.” (close italics). “Curiouser and curiouser” as the cat in Alice in Wonderland is reputed to have said!!
  At last. Definitive evidence  that should lead to the abolition of the whip in racing!
  (commence italics).. Two papers published in journal Animals lend support to a ban on whipping in horse racing. They respectively show that horses feel as much pain as humans would when whipped, and that the whip does not enhance race safety.
Do horses feel pain when whipped? Racing industry officials have long held that they don’t. Yet in two studies released around Melbourne Cup week, Professor Paul McGreevy from the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science and his colleagues have found that not only have horses evolved to feel as much pain when whipped as a human would, but that there is no compelling reason to whip these animals at all. The culmination of nearly a decade of research, these findings have the potential to fundamentally change the racing industry, locally and worldwide.Published across two papers in open access journal Animals, Professor McGreevy says he would not be surprised if the findings prompt the “PHASING OUT OF WHIPPING IN RACING IN AUSTRALIA WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS”..
Whipping hurts horses  Professor McGreevy and colleagues examined whether horses are likely to feel as much pain as humans would when whipped. Using microscopic samples of skin from 10 deceased humans and 20 euthanised horses, they looked for differences between the species’ skin structure and nerve supply. The results revealed “no significant difference” between humans and horses in the concentration of nerve endings in the outer layers of skin, nor any difference in thickness of this skin layer. “This was not surprising, as horses, like humans, need robust yet sensitive skin to respond to touch, say, from flying insects or other horses,” said Professor McGreevy. “From this, we can deduce that horses are likely to feel as much pain as humans would when being whipped.” “Repeated strikes of the whip in horses that are fatigued as they end a race are likely to be distressing and cause suffering. A horse’s loss of agency as it undergoes this kind of repeated treatment is thought to lead to learned helplessness.”
 
In another paper, Professor McGreevy and colleagues, including Professor Phil McManus from the School of Geosciences, used data from the UK racing industry to compare 67 races with whips to 59 without, controlled for variables including number of horses, racetrack surface characteristics on the day, and race distance.  “In the UK, unlike in Australia, the racing authorities hold whip-free races for apprentice jockeys,” Professor McGreevy explained. “This seems at odds with the racing industry’s claim that whips are necessary for steering, and therefore, jockey safety.  “Nevertheless, our analysis of racing stewards’ reports from the two types of races revealed no statistical safety difference between races with and without whips.”  He and his co-authors also found that race times and metrics of racing integrity – compliance with rules – did not differ between the kinds of races. “This invalidates industry assumptions to the contrary,” Professor McGreevy said.  “THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY CLEARLY SHOW THAT THE USE OF WHIPS IN HORSE RACING, IS UNNECESSARY, UNJUTIFIABLE, AND UNREASONABLE”
 
  Nothing new on the driver’s side of the leader board this week, with Pete and Narissa Mcmullen scoring four winning drives apiece, while the trainers section produced a wonderful result with Trent Lethaby, Darrell Graham, Ron Sallis,and Alistair Barnes, all finding Victory Lane on two occasions over the week. The A-Team: Brittany and Darrel Graham
No trotter has ever recorded back to back victories in the Darrell Alexander Memorial Trotting Championship Final. Star performer Our Overanova is a dual winner but recorded his victories years apart, the Grant Dixon prepared gelding scored in 2014 before claiming the feature again in 2017. Amazingly, the veteran lines up again this weekend, his fifth final after contesting the past seven series. On Saturday night, he starts as the back marker off a 30m handicap in the 2647m feature. Trainer Dixon has won the event five times since it was first staged back in 2008 at the famed Parklands complex. It was moved to its current home of Albion Park in 2013 following the unfortunate closure of the Gold Coast. The Gr.2 $30,770 event has drawn together an excellent and capacity sized field, 14 runners will be vying for the prize on offer. Defending champion Wee Man Trouble looms as a superb chance of rewriting history, his slashing efforts in both rounds of heats haven’t gone unnoticed and will carry plenty of support. Last year, the former New Zealand gelding was prepared by Grant Dixon and handled by Adam Sanderson when starting off the front-line in the Gr.1 feature but owing the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s event has dropped back to Gr.2 level. Wee Man Trouble is now prepared by owner Shannon Price with Sanderson sticking solid, the five-year-old must overcome a 10m handicap if he is to become the first back to back winner.
But former Victorian BD Khaosan also carries an army of supporters. Purchased by SKY Racing personality Brittany Graham specifically for this series, the gelding has shaped up nicely in both heats to date. A first-up victory over 2647m was followed by an excellent second (behind Gee Up Neddy) last week over the shorter 2138m trip. The talented trotter is prepared by Brittany’s father, Darrel. “When he first arrived, we had a few issues with him and he was behind the eight ball, but he came out and won his opening heat and then went another good race last week,” Graham said. “The draw on paper doesn’t look good but it’s a really open race and luck in running is going to be crucial. You can’t go into this race with a single plan, we’ve got a great driver and he’s adaptable and so is the horse so I’m really looking forward to it.” He added. The Graham family enjoyed success earlier this year during the winter carnival when another former Victorian trotter Il Pirata scored in the Gr.3 $25,770 Queensland Trotters Cup at Albion Park. And driver Shane Graham (no relation) is a previous winner of the DJA Final when combining with King Of Strathfield back in 2012. TAB fixed odds markets have Wee Man Trouble as favourite at $4.60 ahead of Majestic Simon ($6) and BD Khaosan ($7). The 2020 Darrell Alexander Memorial Trotting Championship is Race 4 on the 10-race card and is scheduled to start at 7.17pm local time.  Albion Park action gets underway at 5.42pm local time.

There were five winners of the six heats - Our Overanova, BD Khaosan, Musculus and Majestic Simon, with Gee Up Neddy the only finalist to claim victory in both heats he contested. However, if Neddy is to claim victory in the Group 2 Final, he will need to overcome history. The 2020 edition will be the 14th running of the DJA and in the previous 13 renewals, no trotter has been able to win both heat rounds and the Final. But this year has been a year like no other in so many ways, so will this be the year that a trotter can sweep the series? Gee Up Neddy has certainly found form at the right time to make it a reality, and from the 10-metre handicap combined with his great manners, has the chance to re-write history.”

First and foremost for context the overall 1850m track record is to the credit of JEWEL OF PEAK – 1.56.8 set in October last year. The low hanging fruit record is of course the 2yo we haven’t had many such races there but STRAYTOTHEPOOLROOM now holds that at 2.02.9 Then there is the 3yo track record which given it was set in the 15th month of the racing season certainly gives VOODOO FELLA an age advantage over his predecessors but its in his name now at 1.58.4 The one that has grabbed my attention however is Jonah’s Hutchinson’s 20 start maiden setting the new 4yo mares mark at 1.57.8... Gina showed good gate speed and high crusing speed running the 3rd quarter in 28.3 she only trundled home in 29.8 but given the runner up was 73 metres astern wasn’t asked to give a lot up the straight. She must have met some real nice types in her first 20 starts down in NSW, Jonah has obviously transformed her.

Just watch this space next week, as it seems likely that our SA cousins are about to find a new lease of life.  Fifty years ago, with the opening of Globe Derby Park, South Australia , which had a strong breeding industry, based on Globe Derby and Raider bloodlines in their broodmare band, appeared set for a boom cycle. For whatever reason, this did not eventuate and we have watched half a century of mediocre performance. The newly appointed Chair of HARNESS RACING SA, George Fiacchi, is a low profile doer, not a star struck dreamer, and if he gets the support he deserves, we will see a different and attractive product, taking the light harness sport forward into a bright future!.

  Again the drivers totem pole swaying in the breeze with Pete McMullen at the top on seven wins for the week, sister Taleah with a tenuous grip, three rungs down at four wins and climbing hard.. Most of the training success came from outside the footprint, but Melissa Gillies and Chantal Turpin put in game efforts to lead in a pair of winners each for the week. Most pleasing, Nesters Hill, trained at Marburg by Peter Mackay with Taleah McMullen in the sulky, and Melissa’s duo. Ipswich Factor 25/54..

  Christmas is coming, and Marburg is getting ready. As is the usual, the emphasis will be on the family, with Santa making a mid meeting appearance with bulk lollies for the kids, and supervised entertainment so that Mum and Dad can have a bit of fun as well. Just four days before Christmas on Sunday ,December 20th, an afternoon at Marburg, being part of the atmosphere of Country Harness at its best is as good a lead in to the “Big Day” as you can get. Watch this space!
 
A great start to the Summer CarnivaI, with a highlight for the Lowood based team of Turpin/McMullen, who were responsible for the only Ipswich footprint successes on opening night. The husband and wife team took out major features at both gaits, with the trotter Majestic Simon and the pacer Dance In The Sun.  It’s now all systems Go for the second night of the 2020 summer carnival and with all roads heading to Albion Park, the host club have a huge 10-race program assigned with seven features included. And if the reaction from the opening night last week is anything to go by, it promises to be bigger and better this Saturday night. “Last weekend was a great result for all involved, it was great to see so many people (new & old faces) take in a night of fine racing action coupled with a new facilities including the Creek Bar. A great way to measure a crowd is by how long they hang around for and in the end, we had to turn the lights out which is very pleasing.” CEO Scott Steele said. The metropolitan club in conjunction with major sponsor Garrards gave away $20,000 cash last week to lucky punters and it was naturally well received. Winners included Dianne McRoberts, Dale Hogan, Steph Freeman and Bernadette Alexander who all pocketed $5000 each. While no cash giveaways are planned this weekend, the entertainment will be equally strong with the second round of Jockeys & Drivers Challenge an obvious highlight.

FEW reinsmen could expect to make such a huge impression when they are forced to drive ‘second stringers’.
Yet former Queensland reinsman Leonard Cain is now widely regarded as one of the most talented young horsemen matching it with the best in the business. While he came south to work for trainer Noel Daley, Cain was quickly snapped up by the Craig Cross/Luke McCarthy stable when Daley decided to return to the US. Since then Cain has continued to land more than his share of winners as the back-up reinsman behind McCarthy. He was at his best again on Saturday night, scoring a fabulous 2.5m win with former Victorian pacer Buster Brady at Menangle, rating 1:50.9 for the mile to beat Dance For Glory (Josh Gallagher) and $2.10 favourite Zahven Banner (McCarthy). “I drove him [Buster Brady] in a trial a few weeks ago and was really happy with the way he went and we really felt he was knocking on the door and close to a win,” said Cain. “He’s certainly got the ability and he showed that the other night. “To be honest I’ve really enjoyed driving for Craig’s stable as they have so many nice horses and even driving the second stringers behind Luke gets you some really good drives.
Cain is getting excited about a return trip to his native Queensland for their feature racing in coming weeks. “We’re sending about a dozen horses up there with travelling foreman Matt Coffee and I’ll head up there in the middle of this week to give him a hand,” he said. “I’ll be there driving for a few Saturday nights. “Luke will come up to drive King Of Swing in their big race, The Blacks A Fake and a few others but it will be fun to be home for a visit. “I have no plans to return there permanently, though, things are going too well for me in Sydney and I’m enjoying it down here.” Cain heads for Menangle today (Tuesday) with just one drive, despite his great form.
  In a somewhat surprising move, Racing Queensland has decided to try yet another  session of “Driver’s Colours”. Of six months duration this time, and limited to just six drivers, Pete McMullen, Narissa McMullen, Brendan Barnes, Angus Garrard, Matt Elkins and Kylie Rasmussen. From the same page, came news that the new look “Harness Advisory Panel”, convened again last month, and continues to make an important contribution for the code. Among the discussion items were “training and education”, with the aim of developing training programs for new entrants. In a sport/industry which claims to be shopping for new entrants, there is little inducement for any one but a multi-millionaire, whose only interest is to make yet more money,to get into it, and who, naturally enough, would not give a damn what colours were worn.. Harness is an arm of  Racing Queensland, as are the Gallops. You don’t see the Thoroughbreds going  down to the wire in “Jockey’s Colours”, and their turnover far exceeds ours. Also, their are three main groups of people in either code of horse racing, why does harness go out of its way to insult trainers and owners by denying them the right to have their colours carried by what are paid employees, given that all codes of racing involve a measure of “ego tripping”. As to the “advisory panel”, it would be great step forward, if this mysterious group reported their agendas, deliberations and decisions in full to the participants. Who knows, we might applaud their wisdom and decisions, on the other hand, we might justly condemn them, as is our democratic right!
 
  The double sided totem pole is swaying with the combined weight of Turpin/McMullen success this week. Pete McMullen ,leading driver on seven wins, and his good wife, Chantal Turpin, top trainer, leading in four nice winners for seven days work. Most pleasing was shared by Paul Matis , training and driving Sir Semper Fidelis in a welcome change of luck. Colin Knox up there in the winners circle with super honest Monterey Jack (Paul Diebert), and two winning drives for Clint Sneddon, behind the Karen Bennett trained Malabar Spur. Ipswich Factor 22/58.

  Marburg is coming, and it is coming on Sunday week, December 20th. Warm up for Christmas Day with an afternoon of country trots on the action packed 700 metre Marburg  circuit. Supervised kids  activities, waterslide and rock climbing wall.  Santa of course for the kids, and our great regulars, the Mini-trotters. TAB facility will be  up and running. Stephen Anthony will be our in house bookmaker, and the “funny money” team will be in action for those who like a flutter, without actually losing money. “ Pick the card”, now worth $2,000 (share basis if multiple winners). Great country burgers etc ,done to perfection on our new BBQ, home made desserts, and a great selection of cold beverage, all at “battlers” prices. Adults $5, Members and Pensioners $3, kids under 16 free, and the all important Race Book, $3. Marburg Show Ground, gates open 11.00am approx.. Just be there.
 
  As the Summer Carnival goes into overdrive for the final night, as we look back over the past couple of weeks, the Brisbane harness racing scene has been abuzz with obvious talent on display as we build to the ultimate climax, the Gr.1 $175,660 TAB Blacks A Fake over 2680m. The Grand Circuit feature headlines a superb 10-race program which gets underway at 5.32pm local time. Star Sydney based performer King Of Swing is listed as the punters elect after drawing favourably in gate five for the powerful combination of Craig Cross and Luke McCarthy but will face stiff opposition from the likes of Be Good Johnny Sprint winner and defending champion Colt Thirty One plus the Vicki Rasmussen pair of former Kiwi pacers One Change and Turn It Up among others. Trainer Craig Cross is well-represented with four runners including last week’s Queensland Cup winner Cruz plus boom pacer Balraj and the exceptionally talented Bright Energy starting alongside King Of Swing.

“It’s a fantastic field and something that everyone should be proud of because earlier this year it was looking unlikely we would stage our Grand Circuit feature owing to the Covid-19 pandemic but we’re here now and it’s come together really well.” Chief Executive Scott Steele said. “We’re also breaking new ground this weekend with Free-to-air television coverage with Channel Seven on board, they will showcase the TAB Blacks A Fake plus the Ultimate Tools 3yo feature before the main event which is very exciting.”

 It is interesting to view the above from another perspective. It would be fair to say that there will be a great number of smaller owners and trainers who will be glad to see the back of the visitors, as it can be said that they take a disproportionate amount of the available prizemoney with them when they go. Just possibly ,there is a long term benefit to be gained from these Viking style raids on the money side of our sport/industry.

 If we look way back to the domination of A D (Tony) Turnbull in his annual six month attack on  Brisbane harness in the cooler months, it did not last forever. Soon enough, his permanent presence in the winners circle, caused local trainers to raise their game, and steadily, AD’s flood of winners was choked back to a non-viable trickle, and, eventually he stopped coming. As I have said, it is just another perspective on an annual problem for those not at the top of the tree here.. Food for thought.!!

  An announcement from Racing Queensland, earlier in the week, has sent a great many participants into upheaval. The controversial news was that six highly successful young drivers had agreed to use “Driver’s Colours” for a six month trial period, starting this Saturday night. The object was to present the drivers concerned as “superstars” to the public, on the advice of a sports promotion company, engaged for the project, and the stars were to be equipped with selected colours, matching decorated skull caps and matching wheels. In other words, an image building exercise, designed to provide additional “bet types” which would provide additional “turnover”, and benefit the sport/industry overall.

 Finally, after many such ambushes as this, from the halls of power,  owners and trainers have dug their heels in and are demanding that they be consulted in a proper way over this matter.  Given that the owners pay the bills, whether they be to a professional trainer, or those bills equate to the expense of upkeep of the horse in an owner-trainer situation, all these people have taken on heavy, and recurring costs. With these costs comes the inalienable right, to register colours, and have them worn on the race track.

Currently, the initiative is on hold, until a suitable time and place can be found to hold a consultative meeting.  I don’t think that this one is going to fly. More next week.

  Another week gone, and still Pete McMullen at the top of the driver’s list with five wins, Matt Elkins threatening danger, greeting the judge on three occasions. Over on the training side, Darrell Graham, “boss cocky” with three winners, Hard charging behind, Ben battle, Chantal Turpin and Tayla Gillespie, all there with two winners each for the week.   All roads lead to Marburg this Sunday. Take a break from the rush of Christmas preparations to enjoy an afternoon at the Marburg trots.  Nine action packed harness races on the 700 metre Show ground track, where you can pick out your runner as they go down the back straight. New TAB facility open for the first time, Steven Anthony  our regular bookmaker will field on the locals, and the popular “funny money bookie” for all those who like a flutter, but can’t afford to lose cold cash. “Pick The card” in operation on the last seven races-- $2,000 (share basis) for any top tipsters. Best Country Burgers, other hot items, homemade  desserts, and the cheapest cold beverage at any sporting event. Mini-trotters, free supervised rock climbing wall and waterslide for the kids, Santa will appear mid afternoon, Ice cream and coffee van on site. The whole day at Battlers Prices.  Adults $5, Members and Pensioners $3, kids under 16 free, and the all important Race Book $3.   As we move into the Festive Season, The Committee of the Marburg Pacing Association, in conjunction with “Trot Tactics”, wish our readers all the joys of Christmas and a prosperous New Year to follow. Over the life of the MPA on the Marburg ,much has changed. The ten or so hands-on trotting men who met in Bevan Dance’s poolside shelter in the early 1980s, had only one thing on their minds. How could we persuade the Show Society to lease us their track, so that we could provide training and trialling facilities for the numerous hobby trainers (95%) in the greater Ipswich footprint. In those days, the focus of thought was very much “us” as opposed to “me”, and with the willing support of successive Show Presidents, Percy Truloff, and Norm Reinke, and the benefits of organised trialling on a maintained training track, the local hobby trainers were soon able to more than hold their own at any venue in Queensland. Time passes, Committees come, Committees go, and the focus changes. Control Bodies suffered from the same maladies, some were benevolent, others bordered on the malignant or at best uncaring. Two decades ago in Queensland there was a mighty swing. Those of us who attended industry meetings, were told to forget “us” and concentrate on “me”. The direction of harness racing was no longer that of providing a spectacular, crowd drawing entertainment, which in itself provided a solid betting medium, and thus a reasonable level of income for the TAB. It was to be a hardnosed business, where the shrinking number of hobby trainers were regarded as cannon fodder for the “professionals’, and there was absolutely no need for the general public to attend race meetings. Currently, this policy  still applies.  Much has been said about Marburg as an entry point for new trainers and drivers. No quite correct, as the “pros” also have Marburg type horses, and quite rightly, they race them there.
 
Marburg has evolved from a very useful training and trialling facility to a Tier 2 TAB track. We have a permanent and “disabled compliant” TAB betting facility, opening this Sunday, and we chase crowds with considerable fervour, based on the belief that harness racing is a sport with wide appeal to both punter and spectator alike. We also believe that we are in the entertainment business, and our desire to grow that side of the sport is pivotal to many of our policies and decisions. Currently the MPA is on the balance point. Our income is hampered by a lack of meetings. More meetings means more income, which means some paid staff in the areas where volunteers have carried the load for many years. More meetings also means a better service to participants in the Ipswich footprint where at least 105 trainers currently reside, with more to come in the near future. The policy of the MPA—“to grow harness/trotting on all fronts”, does not get the support it deserves!!
 
  There’s only one decorated tree to check out in our area. Pete McMullen again star driver with six wins for the week, and wife Chantal Turpin trained a nice accompaniment of five winners—Talk about Christmas Ducks! Most pleasing, Headwin (Ben Battle) and View By The Rock (Megan Gee). For all those who seldom feature in our winning lists, may 2021 be your year, a year for you to rebuild your ambitions in harness.. Never lose hope!!

   As you will see below, Racing Queensland is playing “Santa” this year, and that is great news. On the Marburg Pacing Association front, we have managed to complete our TAB facility, and we are mightily pleased, that what was originally proposed as a transportable item, is now a rock solid, totally “disabled compliant” building, which opened last Sunday for the first time. More major improvements are planned for the future. The MPA takes this opportunity to thank each and every member of the public who came to our race meetings, and wish you, one and all, a magic Christmas, and a prosperous New year to come. Without your on-course presence,  enjoying our Country Harness Racing, we are rubbish. Keep on coming!!!
 
In early December, Racing Queensland announced an additional $15.5 million in funding as part of an Industry Investment Plan, that will commence from January 1, 2021.
Under the Plan, which will benefit almost 40,000 Queensland participants, RQ will deliver increased prize money, investment in QBRED and payments to drivers, along with infrastructure grants and higher club payments.
The Plan will see $600,000 per annum injected into the QBRED incentive breeding scheme, which will see the first-win bonus rise from $10,000 to $12,000.
Additionally, both 3YO Triads will increase to $100,000 Group 1 features.
In accordance with clause 8.2 (b) of the 2021 QBRED Terms and Conditions, these changes are now reflected in the T&C’s.
The Plan will also deliver $700,000 per annum in increased prize money, including increasing and elevating mares feature races with a $100,000 Group 1 race during the Constellations carnival in July.
There will also be increases to metropolitan races with base ‘Band’ level stakes rising to $14,660 for 12 horse fields (2138m) and $14,060 for 10 horse fields (1660m).
The increase in funding will ensure connections of runners that run sixth through to last receive at least $300 in all races over $12,000, as well as the payment to first place also set to increase.
Finally, a $250,000 per annum increase will see driver fees increased from $60 to $70 per drive - up from $45 two years ago.
As part of these enhancements, RQ will also make a change to the current $50 float rebate which will now be paid as prize money to the owners.
For consistency, this will mean all prize money (other than drivers’ fees) will now be paid directly to the owners.
Since 2017, returns to participants across the three codes have grown from $174 million to $223 million heading towards the strategic ambition of $250 million.
 
   The Festive Season did not upset  the “status quo” on the drivers totem pole this week with siblings, Narissa and Pete McMullen sharing the “sulky sitting” honours on four wins apiece. On the training side some variation with Kay Crone and Ben Battle giving Chantal Turpin a shake, with all three stables producing two winners over the period. Most pleasing ,My Ultimate Hell at Marburg for Wayne Davis. Ipswich Factor 20/44.

“BORDER TROTS” 01/01/2021..

  History of a sort is about to be made, as January 01/2021, is now the commencement of the Australian Harness Racing Year, which will close on December 31/2021. This time frame will correspond with the Northern Hemisphere, particularly USA and Canada.  As yet it is not clear, what the real reason is for this radical change. No doubt all will be revealed, as we ordinary mortals watch and wonder. We can only hope that it is more easily understood than the last innovation, the “ratings based programming and handicapping system”. At the HRA “roadshow” designed to sell a system which had already been signed off on, we were told that horses would drop back in grade much quicker than under the older “drop back” rule, and thus earn much more frequently. I have news for the supporters of that particular propaganda. If an owner and trainer of horses of moderate ability send their charges out to try their hardest every time they start, (which is what they are supposed to do, anyway, and quite a few actually follow this principle),  then dropping back is a drawn out process indeed. I am implying nothing untoward here, merely posing a question, based on the proposition that the “ratings system” MAY be open to abuse.. What ever, by the time we reach December 31/2021, we MAY understand the rationale for the change to the Racing Year, and be more comfortable with the “Ratings System”. In the intervening 12 months, may all participants, punters and those wonderful people who just like the spectacle and excitement of a day, or a night at the trots, enjoy a lasting positive experience, be it just money, or just fun. It’s called a “Happy and Prosperous New Year”.

 
 Broodmare owners who are still considering if they should breed their mare this season or not, should study the facts before making their important breeding decision
The record books show that many of the modern day champions in Australia and New Zealand were born in December or January. And, with the racing season in Australia being extended to December 31, and the fact that many of the age classics are being held later in the year, points up that breeding your mare later is the season will not disadvantage the earning potential of the resultant foal. The Victoria Cup winner and Miracle Mile runner-up Lochinvar Art, the Victoria Cup and Hunter Cup hero Bling It On, the New Zealand Cup and Hunter Cup winner Arden Rooney and the Queen of the Pacific winners Nike Franco and Ameretto were among the list of top performers born in December. In fact, Nike Franco and Bling It On were foaled four days apart on December 23, 2010 and December 19, 2010 respectively. The dual Inter Dominion heat winner Galactic Star was a December 21 foal, while Lumineer, the undefeated Victorian two-year-old in the 2016/17 season, was foaled on December 9. And, Waylade, the winner of the WA 4YO Championship and McInerney Ford Classic, was a New Year’s Day foal. On the trotting side, the Australian Trotting Grand Prix winner On Thunder Road and top free for all horse, Maorisfavouritesun were both foaled in January. While, the Breeders Crown champions Im Ready Jet, Always Ready and Stress Factor, the Victoria Oaks winner Pretty Majestic and the cups winner Lightning Calder were all born in December.


 
  The following is the optimistic view of the light harness sport/industry in NSW. Like all such plans put out in the last 25 years, it talks about turnover, based on the assumption that it will always be there, and that the punters are simply addicts. Some punters are addicts, it is true, but this writer’s concern is with the “potential”punters, the ones we might get, if we removed impediments such as whips, and  half baked handicapping and programming systems which supply no identifiable form lines.  Those punters are out there, but they need to make their own choices  as to what they bet on.( It’s called “personal involvement”) Harness steadfastly refuses to supply the correct tools, so that is where those punters are staying, “out there”. It is financial sense to grow your customer base by improving your product!!
  SUSTAIN, enhance and innovate’ are the key pillars for Harness Racing New South Wales’ 2021-2023 Strategic Plan, ‘Harness The Passion’.
Following extensive consultation and contributions from a cross-section of stakeholders, the newly released plan will deliver in the pillars of sustain, enhance and innovate over the next three years. Actions towards the Strategic Plan goals are already in place with HRNSW recently announcing base prizemoney will incrementally increase year-on-year commencing from January 1, 2021. A total increase in base prizemoney of $8.5million will be delivered to owners, trainers and drivers across the three years to ‘sustain the industry’.  Other prizemoney injections in regional NSW have also been released.
“Significant funding injections amounting to several millions of dollars are provided for over the next three years underpinned by a stable return in wagering revenue and draw down where necessary from the Future Fund,” HRNSW Chief Executive John Dumesny said. “Importantly wagering revenue must be sustained and improved which can lead to further increases to base prizemoney and other initiatives undertaken for the advancement of the industry at large.” Meanwhile, HRNSW is also midway through a search of appointing a specialist Media and Marketing Manager to ‘enhance the industry’ through an internationally renowned recruitment agency specialising in sport. “Already HRNSW has a media and marketing budget but we are often questioned if this is enough or is it well placed,” Dumesny said. “During the course of the previous Strategic Plan $2.3 million per year in direct costs have been covered by HRNSW and partnering with Clubs to promote the industry will be the mission going forward.”
An Innovation Group will be formed from people with a positive passion for the harness racing industry so as to ‘innovate the industry’.  This group will be funded by HRNSW and ideas that challenge the tried-and-true formula will be explored. “Not every idea will be accomplished but with positive people on board we can become an even more attractive sport especially for the younger generations.” HRNSW is required under the Harness Racing Act to prepare a Strategic Plan on a three-year cycle. “All those participants who contributed to the formulation of the Strategic Plan must be acknowledged for their commitment to the task,” Dumesny said.  The ‘Harness The Passion’ 2021-2023 Strategic plan can be found at www.hrnsw.com.au ..

 Changes at the top of the totem pole this week, which due to the Festive Season covered no less than eight meetings. Matt Elkins was top driver with five wins , due to the training efforts of Dan Russell, who produced three to greet the Judge, and Matt Elkins partner, Narissa Mcmullen, who added a further two to the Matt E stats.  Most pleasing, were ,(training) Northview Hustler (Alistair Barnes), and (driving) Steven Doherty, Woodlands Wonder. Ipswich Factor 21/73..
Next week will be a mass of statistics as we look at the Top thee achievers on the race track  over this extra long season ,and spotlight a few of the rising stars.

  In the first two decades of the third Millenium, great changes have been thrust upon the racing sport/industry across all three codes.. I have often written that the “age of the horse”, that stretch of time over forty centuries, when our four legged friends were the major source of transport for people and goods, came to an end about 1935. The marker for this, was the decision of major brewing companies, to replace their wagons and horse teams with motor lorries. The brewers had been the only large scale enterprise left to cart their product by horse drawn vehicles at this time. In isolated pockets of Queensland, coach services fought the petrol burning cavalry as long as they could, but progress prevailed. In the 85 years that have passed, there has been a great change in the general public’s perception of the horse. He has morphed from the backbone of a nation’s transport system, to appear in a number of roles, ranging from a pampered pet, a show animal, a performance animal, ( a number of disciplines here from dressage, jumping, thee day events, polo, polocrosse and endurance ), all mentioned, have their passionate adherents. We are here to concern ourselves with the last remnants of the working horses, the stock horse/camp drafter (whose pleasure and performance is an extension of his day’s work in the pastoral sector), and our own particular bent, the race horse, be he thoroughbred or harness horse.
  In that 85 years, animal welfare has become an important segment in the day to day routine of the horse trainer. Overall control of racing has passed from the Principal Club system to State Governments via the “Quango” system. Governments tend to deny this, but, as we have Ministers for Racing, and these Ministers appoint, or approve the appointment of Members of Racing Control Bodies, those particular denials can be taken with a grain of salt. Governments thrive on reporting of statistics, and acting on those statistics to formulate policy. The welfare of the race horse of either racing code has become a point of focus, as the great bulk of the Australian population, will not tolerate any form of animal abuse simply on sympathetic and humanitarian grounds. And this should rightly be the case. In order to keep a watchful eye on the racing industry, Control bodies in harness, have formulated reporting procedures to ensure that race animals are not needlessly destroyed and are kept in good health from the “cradle to the grave”..
DEREGISTRATION of a horse Where a registered horse has been retired from racing or a decision has been made to not race the horse, the owner at the time of its retirement must, within one month of a horse’s retirement, notify the Registrar by lodging the relevant form. Where a registered horse has been retired from racing or a decision has been made to not race the horse but retain it for the purpose of breeding, the owner at the time of its retirement from breeding must, within one month of the horse’s retirement notify the Registrar by lodging the relevant form.
DEATH of a horse The owner or trainer of a registered horse at the time of its death shall – in the case of a horse which dies within 14 days of being entered for or participating in a race notify the Controlling Body of the death within 24 hours of its occurrence. The owner or trainer of a registered horse at the time of its death shall – in any other case notify the Controlling Body of the death within 7 days of its occurrence. The owner or trainer of a horse whose death has been notified, or which should have been notified, must not dispose of a carcass without the permission of the Stewards or the Controlling Body, email Stewards@qric.qld.gov.au for approval. Harness Racing (Stable Returns) A stable return containing true and correct particulars must be lodged by the connections of a horse as soon as a horse comes into care or leaves care. Any amendments will require a fresh stable return to be lodged. It is important that the industry can accurately trace all Standardbred horses from birth through until their deregistration.
Deregistration Death If a registered horse has been entered or participated in a race in the past 14 days. In all other cases of death of a registered horse. within 7 days within 24 hours within 1 month The owner or trainer of a horse whose death has been notified, or which should have been notified, under sub rule (4)(a) shall not dispose of a carcass without the permission of the Stewards or the Controlling Body. New Penalty Standards for Notifications of Retirement of Equine Racing Animals
New penalties are being introduced to support the recommendations of the Martin Inquiry into animal cruelty in the management of retired Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses in Queensland.
Martin Inquiry recommendation 3.3 The QRIC commits more resources to the active enforcement of retirement notifications including the auditing of ‘high-risk’ categories such as racing horses that have been ‘spelling’ for more than 12 months and horses that are still registered but have not had a race start in the last 12 months. Martin Inquiry recommendation 3.4 The QRIC develops a penalty standard for the failure to provide timely retirement and death notifications that reflects the critical role they play in monitoring the welfare of retired racing horses.
The new penalty standards will be introduced from 1 January 2021 to enforce retirement notifications in equine racing animals. As a measure that supports voluntary compliance with the rules of racing if a participant has failed to notify the retirement or death of a horse outside of the rules of racing; The first offence will incur a caution, the second offence  will incur a reprimand, the third offence will incur a fine of $200 for each horse that has not been retired within the rules. The fourth offence will incur a fine of $500 for each horse that has not been retired within the rules. There you have it. A complete code of conduct which protects the horse. In itself, a very good procedure. One sad thing, however, is that Governments have not bitten the bullet, and banned whips from the race track. That would underpin the above in the most positive way.
  One name right to the fore on both boards this short week, McMullen and McMullen. John McMullen was leading trainer, preparing three winners, while Taleah McMullen was top driver, edging out sister Narissa, four wins to three. Most pleasing, Peggy Stardust trained by Peter Mckay, Headwin, making it three from six starts for Ben Battle, and Thank Heaven For Girls , Dale Belford with Nathan Dawson  in the sulky.     It is always good to ask questions. If we do not do this on a regular basis, we are apt to blunder through life in a fog of ignorance, with unsatisfactory outcomes as a result. This weeks question begs clarification on a number of fronts in its answer.  “Where is the logic of a control body, in seriously encouraging and incentivising people to breed harness horses in Queensland ,while, at the same time, providing a racing format only designed to extend a horse’s earning potential. At this time, the bulk of our racing is conducted on just two tracks  in the  Southeast, and this is coupled with a lack of a “sell on” opportunity, due to the refusal of the control body to re-open  a  chain of northern tracks. Add to this, the requirements of modern day animal welfare policy and we are headed for glut of Standardbreds in the Great South East.” Beats Me.

  Brilliant starts for team Veivers and team Battle in their new complexes. Is the centre of success on the shift due to climate change. It has been written many times in this column, that the epicentre of harness success in the greater Ipswich footprint was in the lower Brisbane Valley around Fernvale. Recent results have seen a slight erosion of that phenomenom, with the focus shifting to Mutdapilly/Harrisvile. Extensive capital works on both sites, have seen Teams Veivers and Battle equip themselves with all the tools necessary for positive and professional training , and the winners are starting to come. In the next few weeks we will talk to these young people with their feet firmly planted on the rainbow of a bright future. The trickle will soon become a flood. In the now somewhat specialised field of race driving, it also worth noting that,of the 64 races covered in “Resultsville” this week, 28 were trained or driven by Ipswich Footprint participants. Of these, no less than 19 were driven by grand children of Beryl Dawson, Taleah McMullen 4, Danielle Veivers 4, Pete McMullen 4,Kelli Dawson 3, Narissa McMullen 2,and Trent Dawson 2.. Some Grandmother!!

  The following is lifted from the Racing Queensland Harness site, and comes from the pen of Darren Clayton. (commence italics) “George Michael is an owner, breeder and trainer that has put huge amounts of money and hard work into the sport of harness racing. With many of the horses owned by Michael bred by his own stallions in recent times, in 2016, he opted to send a mare by the name of Melton Bonny Bye to the court of Hurrikane Kingcole. The resultant foal was a filly, and that filly was then entered in the 2019 Redcliffe Yearling Sale. Entering the sales ring, the filly could not attract a solitary bid and was knocked down as a buyback to Michael for the paltry figure of $200. Naming his horses with the moniker of Melton as either a suffix or prefix in their name referring to Melton Stud - which is owned and operated by Michael - this filly would race as Melton Insulted. Given the name owing to how George Michael was feeling after his filly could not even secure a solitary bid at that 2019 sale.
Fast forward to her two-year-old season and Melton Insulted - now prepared by John McMullen - progressed through to the Redcliffe Sales Series Final following a placing in her heat. There was to be no fairy tale in the $100,000 Group 1 Final, however the filly ended the extended season with 8 minor placings from 16 attempts. Stepping out as a three-year-old on January 7 at Redcliffe in her first start for the new season, Melton Insulted was able to land a maiden-breaking victory. Every cloud has a silver lining and the lining on this occasion was for Michael’s pockets. In claiming victory, the filly also pocketed the $12,000 QBRED first win bonus. Not bad for a horse that no one wanted!” (close italics)..
  The figure of $200 appears again in the fairly recent doings of George Michael.  At a  Marburg dispersal sale of mixed racing stock, not that many years back, George was able to secure a son of Cam Luck. The aging stallion was out of How Nice, a daughter of Bye Bye Byrd from How Delightful by Overtrick. And, with a best time of 1-51.4 and $350k on his sheet, from 21 wins out of 64 starts, Quality Cam was no mug. Size it is said is everything, and the only non commercial thing about QC was that he was a small horse, and perhaps less than handsome.  Never one to be daunted, George Michael was again the only bidder, shelling out another $200. GM is likely to have the last laugh, as, crossed with George’s mares, the Quality Cams are winning. They probably take a bit of time, a commodity that today’s trainers appear to have little of. Another coincidence of no importance whatsoever, is that How Nice was bred by a CR Michael. Strange but true.

  Up on the leader board, the driver’s side is overloaded with McMullens.  To wit, Taleah McMullen four wins ,Danielle Veivers (nee McMullen) four wins, and Pete McMullen four wins. Close up Kelli Dawson with three wins. In the training department, up front was John McMullen with four winners, holding off Ryan Veivers and Chantal Turpin on three apiece. Most pleasing Monterey Jack for Colin Knox ,with Paul Diebert in the cart, My Ultimate Hell for Wayne Davis ,driven by Hayden Barnes, and My China Doll Nathan Dawson driving for Dale Belford). Ipswich Factor 28/64..

(commence italics) She's the winningest horsewoman in human history and tonight, harness racing’s ruling Queen, Kerryn Manning, sits on the precipice of an almost unthinkable milestone.  It’s almost 28 years since a shy, raw kid from Victoria’s Western Districts won her first ever race. That day, Manning manoeuvred her way to success aboard a juvenile filly named Gorgeous Gambit.  And, unbeknownst to all, a racing legend was born. Tonight, that legend will pack her driver's bag and head to Ballarat knowing that she’s driven 3999 winners.  And if punters are the prognosticators they believe they are, win 4000 may be only hours away. Amazingly, Manning has moderated her driving duties in recent years to concentrate on training. Once upon a time she’d have nine drives on PETstock Ballarat Pacing Cup night; this evening she has three. Two of those will be long odds; but Red Hot Tooth, who has been heavily backed to win the Group 2 E B Cochran Trotters Cup looks perfectly placed to prevail. It won’t be her biggest success - Manning has won most of Australasia’s biggest events with Arden Rooney and La Coocaracha among the greats she’s partnered, and she conquered the world with Knight Pistol, blazing the trail for female talent following in her footsteps - but it may well be her best. (close italics) Red Hot Tooth was beaten, but KM has a book of six drives at Stawell on Monday 25/01 and nearly all of these have “plum” barrier draws, so another great chance is beckoning. Kerryn Manning has another string to her bow. The lady is possessed of a humble and extremely pleasant personality and has been so from the outset. This writer worked Rob Ricketts’s harness van at Albion Park in the early 90’s and K Manning was a customer on two occasions, firstly at about win number 50, and again about number 450, the 400 being achieved in whirlwind fashion. Same person both times, which says heaps for the Western Victoria wonder driver!!
The Albion Park Harness Racing Club held its Annual General Meeting last Sunday morning, January 17th.. As the APC has rules which, apparently, are  somewhat different to other Clubs, proceedings were somewhat dissimilar to the norm, as we shall see. Pursuant to Rule 12 of the Rules of Albion Park Harness Racing Club, four (4) existing Committee Members being Damian Courtney, Linda Graham, Nathan Hand, and Trevor O’Reilly, retired and were eligible for re-election. Of these four compulsory retirees, only Nathan Hand made the cut. The result of the poll was as follows, (bearing in mind that Brad Steele, Paul Ellis and Greg Mitchell were not up for election this year), Brad Steele (Chair), Paul Ellis, Nathan Hand, Greg Mitchell, Peter Bell (Egmont Park/Qld Breeders), Warwick Stansfield, and Jeff Riseley. There you have it ,a very workable number. Sufficient to bring a healthy diversity of opinion to the table, and no need for the nonsense of Chair persons having a casting vote, and thus, supposedly, the balance of power.

  Now, after the AGM, comes the shedding of the skin. An Extraordinary General Meeting, designed to morph the Club from an Incorporated Association to a company as described in resolution 2. 1.       Implementation of Company Constitution. To consider and, if thought fit, pass the following resolution as a special resolution:
Resolution 1: “To approve, for the purposes of section 136(2) of the Corporations Act and for all other purposes, the repeal of Albion Park’s existing Rules and the adoption of the new constitution in the form tabled at this meeting and initialled by the Chairperson for the purposes of identification, with effect from the close of this meeting.”
2.   Incorporation of company limited by guarantee
Resolution 2: “To approve the recommendation that the governance and legal structure of Albion Park transitions from the incorporated association structure to a new corporate structure, namely a company limited by guarantee (non-listed public company).”.. “Curiouser and curiouser!” as the cat said.

  Back to normal on both totem poles with Pete McMullen asserting his superiority with an easy eight wins over five meetings, Matt Elkins was next best with a score of three. In the training lists Chantal Turpin, combining with Pete to land four Saturday night winners, Greg Elkins and John McMullen each training two for the period. Most pleasing , Majordoit (Tim Gillespie) and Make mine Joe ,trained by Clint Petroff with Trent Dawson in the sulky. Ipswich Factor 21/46..

More good news for the breeders and buyers of potential Q-bred juvenile talent, with the announcement of healthy prize money increases. (commence italics).   The Group 1 Albion Park Gold Final is poised to become the third richest harness race in Queensland after receiving a stakes’ increase to $150,000. Ahead of Sunday’s APG Sale at The Creek, which will see 48 pacing lots go through the ring, Racing Queensland and the Albion Park Harness Racing Club have announced a $50,000 prize money increase for the two-year-old feature from 2022. In recent years, the Brisbane APG Sale has produced some of Australia’s best juveniles, including Muscle Factory and Expensive Ego, and continues to go from strength-to-strength. “There’s never been a better time to purchase Queensland standardbreds,” Racing Queensland EGM Operations Adam Wallish said. “With a further $600,000 per annum being injected into our QBRED scheme, including a rise in the first-win bonus and the continuation of the second-win bonus, it's important that we continue to support our industry.“The uplift in prize money for the Albion Park Gold Final should provide genuine confidence for those purchasing at the Brisbane Sale this week and choosing to race in the Sunshine State.”(close italics).

 What goes through the mind of a Senior Stipendiary Steward when he reflects on a career that spanned almost half a century, from the early 70’s, to  retirement in late 2020. John Hackett is our man ,  who grew up in Warwick, and, as a youngster helped his Uncle, Les Noye, in the preparing of a small but successful team of gallopers. A young JH  commenced employment as a casual Cadet steward with the original Queensland Trotting Board, then chaired by Sir Abraham Fryberg, with Jack Gregg as Chief Steward. The QTB at that point was operating out of the Frank Nicklin pavilion at the EKKA Ground. His first on-track stints were at Redcliffe and Rocklea on Saturday afternoons.. His early and best remembered mentors were Darryl Kays, who later held the Chief Stewards post for many years, and Alan Pearson. JH went full time in 1973 and worked under a succession of great Boards Chaired by Carl Robertson, backed up by Peter Burge. He described Board Secretary, John Hicks, as a first class administrator.
 A high point from those early days, was working the  first Redcliffe meeting held under lights, and he remembers Beau Brown, driven by Keith Addison as winning the first race on that night.It’s mainly memories from here on in, with John remembering  the equine stars of the past as “real characters” as the likes of Harleray, Paleface Adios,  Village Kid,  Preux Chevalier and Koala King scorched around the track while up to 70 bookmakers shouted the odds, and the Stand was packed solid. JH saw a lot of Blacks A Fake, but observed that the champion raced under somewhat different conditions. JH worked a number of Inter-Dominions, starting with that won by Stanley Rio. He described the format in existence at that time as the best test of champion horses ever devised. John Hackett was Deputy Chairman of Stewards in Qld Harness for 13 years, but the wear and tear of late nights and travel, prompted a shift to a Senior Steward post at the Gallops, where he worked from 1996—2010,when he retired for the first time to spend more time with his family. Not for long, however, for JH took an investigative role, as a number of problems arose in the aftermath of the 2011 floods. The departure of Martin Knibbs, saw JH in the Captain’s chair for almost 12 months, during which period he also  filled in as Chief Steward at the dogs.
 John Hackett has no regrets, having enjoyed his career. He carries the conviction that the bulk of licencees and owners, are thoroughly decent people, doing their best for themselves and the sport/industry. However, there are about 5% bad apples who do their best to rort proceedings, and they are hard to catch. In a sucessful Steward, JH believes the attributes are, a passion for all facets of the sport, and an intimate knowledge of the mechanics of racing. A steward’s role is to provide integrity for the punters, who are our prime source of income, and safety in all aspects of race track matters, be it drivers, sulkies or gear. Safety is paramount ,and it is the Stewards job to see that this is the case. JH has seen a number of safety innovations in his time, but rates wheel discs as  Number one. Gone is the regular sight of feet through wheel spokes, with disastrous consequences.
 There you have him, John Hackett, on his way to a peaceful retirement on the Northern Rivers, catching fish, and watching Sky Channel. He should be remembered by drivers and trainers, as playing by the rules. Searching for the truth. Very hard, but very fair with it!!

  McMullen again at the top of the charts, with Taleah scoring on four occasions, just shading Cousin Trent Dawson who found the winning post first, three times.  TD went very close to the top trainer slot as well, nosed out by Darrell Graham 4 to 3.. Most pleasing, Miss Lily May for Phil Mitchell with Angus Garrard in the cart. Ipswich Factor 16/33.

   The following , from the pen of Jordan Gerrans, which is lifted from the Queensland Harness Racing website, is about the biggest event to happen in the greater Ipswich footprint in many years. What was once considered a bit of a backwater in the harness game, though it boasted a very large hobbyist contingent of owners and trainers, has become a mecca for up and coming young professionals. While the following article highlights an astronomical achievement, the Turpin-McMullen operation will soon be under siege from stables in their own backyard, all in the hands of highly competent trainers and drivers, who are determined to have their “day in the sun”. Harness in the Ipswich Footprint has turned 180 degrees and is going forward like the clappers!!
 
  Husband and wife trotting partnership Pete McMullen and Chantal Turpin have many a similarity but differ in one significant way. They are both up at the crack of dawn every morning with the horses at their Patrick Estate property, then looking after and raising their daughters, before usually rushing off to the races. They are on the hunt for winners almost every day of the week – hopefully a few feature races along the way. But, in what sets the leading Queensland trotting duo apart is their goal setting – or lack thereof. McMullen, one of the top drivers around the country, will set himself little goals every season or every few weeks and will aim to knock them over as he goes along. On the other hand, Turpin is happy to go with the flow and just pick up winners as they come, never really thinking too far ahead down the track. So, when the hard-working mother and trainer, Turpin, reached the magical 1000 winners’ milestone late last month, while it is was a special occasion, it was not something that she had longed for. “To train 1000 winners, that is special to anyone,” Turpin, who previously drove but more often focuses on training these days, said. “It is great as we have a good bunch of loyal owners around us. “It is fantastic, but I have never been really a goal setter – whereas Pete always has been.” It is fair to say McMullen is achieving most of the goals he sets for himself, winning the drivers premiership last year Albion Park on top of driving 100 winners in each of the last 11 years. “I have had a lot of personal goals, always,” McMullen, who is the leading driver in Queensland this year as of the second week of February, said. “I have slowly been achieving mine over the years.”
 Regardless of goals, the Turpin and McMullen combination have been a prolific duo over the years, Turpin winning a Group 1 for the first time last year as well as stacks of other victories.  “Chantal reaching 1000 winners as a trainer, that is a really huge milestone that not many trainers do get too,” McMullen said.“We would have to look at the record books, but she would be one of the youngest to do it.“It is all because of owners and we are fortunate and lucky to have them.“Hopefully the 1000 winners are only just the start, we have got a few babies coming along too.” McMullen, who is a third generation trots participant, believes the marriage of husband and wife, and trainer and driver, helps produce the results on the track.

 ADD With McMullen driving at the races most days of the week, Turpin can look after the horses at home and everything else that goes along with being a mother and leading trainer.“We are pretty lucky, Pete goes to the races and that allows me to stay home and raise the kids and do the afternoon shift at the stables,” Turpin said. “I am pretty lucky that Pete is able to go to the races every day.“ I hate when he gets suspended because then I have to go to the races .”
The record breaking Turpin-McMullen partnership prepare their horses at a magnificent Patrick Estate stable in the Somerset Region.They have been there for around eight years and have almost built it up from scratch, now housing almost 50 horses in work and have all the training facilities that are required. McMullen thinks the horses thrive in the open air environment near Lake Wivenhoe. “It is a never ending thing, there is always more to do but it certainly is getting to the stage now where it is quite a nice set up,” McMullen said. “We have set it up very open, we are in Queensland, it is hot and that is the environment the horses are in.“It is open to keep it open with the air flow so all the horses can see each other. “They seem very happy and healthy.”
As well as driving a ton of winners over each of the last 11 years, McMullen’s sparkling resume also includes being the youngest driver to reach 1000 winners earlier in his career and claiming the Australian Drivers championship. McMullen, who was born into the industry, pin-pointed Big Wheels’ Group 1 triumph in the QBRED TRIAD Final – 2YO Colts and Geldings in July of last year as one of the duo’s career highlights so far. They will go searching for more feature events and Group 1 races into 2021 and beyond, with McMullen declaring he would like to improve their strike rate as the year goes on, as well. The pair have Will the Wizard, Saucy Dreams, Blacksadance and Miss Ruby Sunshine in at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday evening.

A reminder from QRIC, albeit from the galloping ranks, that trainers and drivers in harness are to treat their horses with kindness and consideration. The following outlines the consequences for not doing this. As has often been said in this column—We are no longer in “the age or era of the horse”!!

Recent misconduct charges have led to a call from Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) stewards for industry participants to keep their behaviour in check or suffer the consequences. Central Queensland jockey Chris McIver has been disqualified for 12 months after kicking a horse at the barriers before a race in Rockhampton last month. Mr McIver was found guilty of misconduct after he twice forcibly stomped on the hindquarter of his mount ‘Or Else’.
Chief Thoroughbred Steward Peter Chadwick said breaches of this kind are very serious and any behaviour involving the mistreatment of a thoroughbred racehorse must meet with a significant penalty. “The penalty must not only deter Mr McIver but must also illustrate to the racing industry that these actions are not to be tolerated,” he said. “In this case Mr McIver also had two recent breaches of the misconduct rule in 2019 and 2020.”
In another incident, Brisbane based jockey Nathan Thomas pleaded guilty to misconduct and was suspended for two weeks after an incident before a race in Mackay this week. During the barrier loading process, jockey Thomas was dislodged and then forcibly struck his mount ‘Whosday’ with his whip in the region of the horse’s shoulder. In a further misconduct incident, this time at Emerald, Central Queensland stable-hand Nick Trimble pleaded guilty to misconduct and was disqualified for three months. While unsaddling ‘Dirt Rich’ following the running of race two at Emerald on 6 February, Mr Trimble forcibly struck the horse in the girth. Mr Chadwick said all of these incidents had a detrimental effect on the image of racing, and penalties must serve as a general deterrent to illustrate to the racing industry that these activities are unacceptable.(close italics).
  Closer to home and back on gait, no mystery pacers allowed. (Commence italics)  The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has commenced an investigation into a standardbred horse withdrawn from the Australian Pacing Gold (APG) sale when it was found to be unregistered. As part of routine registration checks, QRIC Stewards became aware that Lot 30 Badlands Hanover – Bute Miss catalogued for sale at the Albion Park APG sales on Sunday 31 January is allegedly not a registered racehorse. Stewards directed APG officials to withdraw the horse from the sale.  Chief Harness Steward David Farquharson said Stewards would enquire into the circumstances around the foaling and notification of the yearling to determine the owner’s compliance with the Australian Harness Racing rules. “The Commission regularly attends sales events involving racing animals to ensure the rules are adhered to as part of its compliance activities,” he said. Ron Sallis, Kelli Dawson and Paul Matis a fair distance away with two apiece. On the red carpet in the driver’s lane, Pete McMullen cruising out in front with nine big ones, Narissa McMullen next best on four, and an honest effort from Kelli Dawson, in the spotlight on three occasions.   Ryan and Dani-elle ---“Team Veivers” comes to town. Finally, and at long last, the newest Harness training facility in the Ipswich footprint is open for business in Charles Chauvel Drive. on the outskirts of Harrisville. The young couple and their team of pacers had only been in residence for the last three days when this interview was conducted. Both have had a lifelong involvement in harness racing, 28 year old Ryan under the tutelage of his Grandfather Ken, an Alberton butcher renowned for his skills at producing, not only successful pacers, but the best of traditional smoked hams and bacon south of the Brisbane River, and Danielle, yet another successful driver from the McMullen family. Ryan really had no chance. At the time RV took an interest Ken Veivers was busily owning and training Sparkling Melody, a mare whose record reads 29 wins from a mere 51 starts. She was a signpost saying this is the way to go young man. Ryan  gained his licence ,and the first horse he trained was Indecent Bullville, who made the trip to Harrisville in her second career as a broodmare. The shift from Alberton to Harrisville was Team Veivers first, and it was suggested that it would be OK if it was the last. With 20 yards and stables, an 800 metre metal dust track and a currently dry swim the winner factory is ready to commence production.
  The best horses RV has trained to date are Secret Agent Tycoon,  Gangster Boy and RocknRoll Classic. The training and driving duo, who both came through the mini-trotters under the expert eyes of Bill and Bev McKiernan, just want to keep training winners, hope in time to expand to accommodate 40 horses. Dani-elle has quit her job at Albion Park to work full time with the horses. The plan is to “aim high, and hope to hit the mark”. There they are. R and D Veivers on their way. What can you do, but wish them every success!!!

“Invitations for the first ever Group 1 $250,000 The Rising Sun will go on the line this Saturday evening at Menangle with several hopefuls for the richest harness race in the southern hemisphere for three and four-year-old pacers set to feature.  Last year, Racing Queensland unveiled the Rising Sun as its newest Group 1 feature with any three-year-old that contests the race benefiting from a preferential draw, and should they triumph, will receive a $100,000 bonus. The first ever running of the Group 1 was postponed in 2020 with limited feature racing occurring due to COVID-19. The exciting new race, The Rising Sun, will now debut on July 10 later this year as part of the Constellations Carnival. RQ and the Albion Park Harness Racing Club have the option to issue invites to 3YO’s (up to two) or 4YO’s (up to two) for the upcoming Rising Sun.  There is a chance invites will be issued in the coming weeks following Saturday’s Chariots of Fire and the upcoming NSW Derby and the New Zealand Great Northern Derby, both to be held early next month. Two leading hopefuls for the inaugural Rising Sun, Chantal Turpin’s Will The Wizard and Belinda McCarthy’s Expensive Ego, will build towards the Queensland winter carnival on Saturday evening in the Group 1 Chariots of Fire at Menangle.
Driver Shane Graham has been buoyed by Tuesday morning’s positive barrier draw for Turn It Up ahead of Friday evening’s Group 1 Newcastle Mile. The sport’s pin-up pacer Lochinvar Art - rated a $1.40 chance to take out the feature event with the TAB - drew poorly in 10 on Tuesday morning while Turn It Up will come from seven. Regular driver of Turn It Up, Graham, is not getting ahead of himself following the favourable draw but says it will certainly help. Lochinvar Art has an imposing record leading towards Friday’s Newcastle Mile, winning 27 career races from 49 starts, with $1,083,456 in the bank for connections.

With the fund raising venture for research into ovarian cancer well and truly on the boil. Here is the scorecard at the close of week two. (italics)  As the second week of the Team Teal came to a close, the Queensland ladies were able to better the results of the previous week’s 12 wins by claiming victory in 16 races. Narissa McMullen led the way with five wins, highlighted by a Saturday night treble at Albion Park. Claiming driving honours on the night, McMullen scored with Clarry in race one for Stephen Cini, Paravani in race three for partner Matt Elkins and completed the treble by race four with Garland Greene - again for Stephen Cini. Kelli Dawson was able to record four victories for the week, including a Wednesday night double at Redcliffe. Maywyns Jewel, a pacer that Dawson also trains was the first of her pair, with the second for her father Geoff Dawson behind Shereacts. Chloe Butler - one of the 2021 Team Teal ambassadors - was able to drive three winners for the week, highlighted by a Tuesday double at Albion Park.  Scoring with a bold front-running display on Illawong Dreamtime for trainer Doug Lee, Chloe completed the double with a win behind Casino Tommy for trainer and father Jack Butler. Sisters Dannielle Veivers and Taleah McMullen each landed a pair of wins for the week to take the tally to 16 for the week. The Queensland ladies are in second place on the national tally, with Kate Gath leading the charge for the Victorian team out in front. With $200 being donated to ovarian cancer research for every win by a female driver during the six-week period, the ladies are quickly starting to build a strong total.(close italics). Note in the above, that Narissa McMullen, Kelli Dawson. Danielle Veivers and Taleah McMullen are all based in the Greater Ipswich footprint.
 
Again the disturbing  subject of “Driver’s Colours” as opposed to “Owner’s Colours”, or “Trainer’s Colours” was put before a sport/industry meeting, under the banner of Botra (voice of the industry?)  and Racing Queensland at Albion Park on February 1st.             
•   ( commence italics)  RQ’s revised start date for the trial was to be March 1. Please note this has been revised to March 20 to enable Team Teal promotions to be completed.  RQ will work with wagering and broadcast partners to increase wagering promotion of the sport, critical in the competitive racing and sport wagering landscape.  THE INITIAL TRIAL WILL GO FOR 6 MONTHS.   Following feedback from attendees, RQ agrees that owners or trainers’ colours will be permitted to be worn in Group races. Please note that the onus will be on owners and trainers to advise the RQ Racing Office of the preference to use owners/trainers colours in these races.
  Further information on the promotion which was provided in previous correspondence is as follows.  Branding – Broadcasting of Queensland harness racing is almost exclusively via Sky Racing’s primary channel SKY1, where it consists of race coverage only and has been developed in this manner to drive wagering. As such, by virtue of our leading drivers competing in over 15 races per week, our drivers are the sport’s most visual asset. From a branding perspective, drivers offer the best opportunity to develop enduring brands which can be marketed to generate followers and attract those who are currently outside the industry. Under the current scenario, this is difficult to achieve with drivers changing colours from one race to the next. Wagering – The entry point for a majority of new punters today is via sports wagering i.e. Big Bash cricket, AFL or NRL. We need to continue to offer new products, particularly ones that appeal to this market. Through the offer of driver statistics and performances we can arm punters with new information and provide alternative wagering products which will complement the traditional form of wagering on harness racing.  Future participants – Other than as a stable hand, the primary entry point into the harness racing industry as a participant for teenagers and young adults is as a driver. By developing brands for our drivers, we aim to offer heroes which the next generation (including pony trot participants) can follow and aspire to, no different to other sports such as AFL, cricket and NRL.  Presentation – Drivers’ colours enable the product to be presented at its best, with silks tailored to fit and sulky, wheels and helmet to match making for a standard/consistent uniform which looks appealing and sleek.   As you can see from the above, once again, our well meaning administrators have put the human occupants of the cart, well and truly before the horse!!  Whether they truly believe it to be fact, and their actions indicate the contrary, it is the horse which does the running in our sport.. Drivers are “bit players”, whose most valuable skill, from a personal, or “heroic” perspective, should properly consist of having their “gluteus maximus” in the  sulky which is attached to the best horse in the race!
 
  Again the driver’s leader board with a hefty McMullen bias. Pete five wins, Narissa five wins, Taleah three. Only discord, Hayden Barnes, hanging in there, also on three.  Much better spread this week with trainers, Chantal Turpin and Darrell Graham tied on a modest two winners apiece.. Most pleasing, Peter Greig and Steve Coombs, a winner apiece on their first week on our patch. Ipswich Factor 26/46..

  Again, we must practise the “distant early warning” technique ,to raise awareness of coming events. Now that the “ covid” threat seems to be shrinking to manageable proportions we should turn our thoughts to the traditional “SHOW” season, and the need to present trotting/harness racing in one form or another (actual racing or “exhibitions”), at these traditional, annual fairs. In the not too distant past, trotting was the excitement factor at these gatherings, which were very heavily supported by exhibits of local farm produce, and high class farm animals, all of which were presented with the same level of showroom shine as a new car. Experienced judges for each category, handed out trophies, ribbons and bragging rights to local exhibitors. “Town dwellers”, and, importantly, their sheltered offspring, came to realise that the rumour mill was right for once. More than half of the endless varieties of milk in the supermarket cabinet, were produced by cows, and, by and large, the remainder had their genesis in paddocks of soy beans and orchards of almond trees. The local “Ag show” has the potential to fill a huge gap in the neglected education of young “townies”, and, as such, is not getting the level of support it deserves from State and Federal Governments.
  It therefore falls to the Show Societies and the Exhibitors themselves to practise a bit of self help, and that is where the harness racing fraternity in the greater Ipswich footprint, can assist, by supporting show racing in our area. This, at this point in time, will be by EXHIBITION racing at Ipswich Show, due to constraints imposed by the size of the Greyhound track, and the all important safety factors involved. The bones of this enterprise will be thrashed out at a meeting of concerned parties at Ipswich Showground this Monday coming. For the Ipswich exercise, we will ideally need to provide a pool of 16 horses for each day of racing. All racing will be from standing starts, and appearance money will be paid (sum yet to be determined). For the harness owners trainers and drivers, this program presents a golden opportunity  to advertise our sport/industry  to potential followers. Harness racing/trotting is a brilliant spectacle, day or night, and the opportunity  offered by the Ipswich Show Society is too good to be missed. Ring Denis 0408 352 478, after Tuesday 09/03/..

  It is to be noted here that the greater Ipswich footprint  is now the area of choice for re-locating harness trainers. In particular, larger stables are heading this way. With the announcements concerning the Olympic Games to be held in Brisbane/Queensland in 2032, now is the time to form a lobby group, and target support of local parliamentarians, for harness to be part of the Yamanto Greyhound site. With excellent highway access, and the horses on the doorstep, a re-production of the Parklands Dual Code complex at Yamanto equals a 100 year asset. It is of no use to talk amongst ourselves and declare the fore-going to be a “no brainer”.  Go on the attack now, and remember that a large part of a Member of Parliament’s duty is to listen to his electorate , and present their wishes  to the Government. There are two Ys here, and If we don’t get the right Y, we will get Yatala instead. Think NOW, and Act NOW.

  History seems to indicate that a grounding in elite sport is almost as good as an equine family upbringing when looking at a CV suitable for entry into the light harness sport. This week’s success story  concerns Lower Mt Walker based duo, Steve Towns and Maxine Ellison. ST was a cricketing all-rounder who made it to Sheffield Shield level in Tasmania. When he first  appeared on the scene at Marburg, it was obvious that he had very strong opinions as to what constituted a suitable training regime for the racing Standardbred. It seemed to the casual onlooker, that he was applying aspects of human sports fitness techniques to the horses, while Maxine, having come from a successful harness family, was applying polish and presentation. Time passes, and it becomes evident that the Towns-Ellison approach is not only very successful, but they do not keep horses overlong. Passing them on, while they still have races in them. There was bit of joy this week, when the homebred mare, Little Dee got the biscuits at Redcliffe on Wednesday night, picking up a nice $7,500 Q-Bred second win bonus. Served up by S and M at her top, and a thinking drive by Nathan Dawson, saw the 5yo daughter of Mister Feelgood and Madame Camelot add a significant lump of cash to the bankroll. A good week, the first week of March 2021..

  Resultsville, Spectacular results this week  on both sides of the board. Driver honours were close between Dani Veivers, seven wins, and Pete McMullen, who scored on six occasions. On the trainer’s side ,an incredible debut by Ryan Veivers. Hardly time for the dust to settle on the new place, and posting eight winners for the week. Some start!! Ipswich factor 32/53..

A positive move by Racing Queensland to program “winnable” races for horses at the dawn of their career, in an attempt to remove the anomaly which repeatedly saw winners of one race thrown in with winners of 21 races (I kid you not), and at the same time, fare worse in the barrier draw.  Following industry consultation, Racing Queensland have introduced a new program of races effective from March 1 with the aim to increase opportunities for young and less experienced horses.
The races are programmed across most Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday race meetings.  Created to provide a pathway for horses outside of the Ratings Handicapping system for young and less experienced horses these races are programmed as follows:  For horses with 0 wins as a 3YO or older   For horses with up to 1 win as a 3YO or older   For horses with up to 2 wins as a 3YO or older  For horses with up to 3 wins as a 3YO or older  Following industry consultation and analysis it was identified that opportunities for the young and less experienced horse should be enhanced to maximize the earning potential of horses earlier in their career.  As such these races will carry more prizemoney than the other standard races on each program funded by the redistribution of funds from some of the races held for the lower rated horses which have been identified as receiving much higher opportunities to earn under the Ratings system.  These limited win races will be monitored over the coming months to determine their effectiveness, competitiveness and to analyse the level of support from industry members.
 
The trotting gait in Queensland continues to go from strength to strength. However, the square gaiter may not even be in existence in Queensland were it not for the foresight and generosity of one man - Jim McNeil. The deeds of McNeil, who put a financial floor under the genesis of the diagonal gaited horses in 1997, to the tune of $100,000 plus,  are remembered annually with the Group 3 Jim McNeil Memorial Trotting Championship. The plane load of moderate New Zealand trotters, selected by Graham Bowyer, which J McN handed around to interested trainers like beers at a family barbecue, were the catalyst that got trotting off the ground in the Sunshine State.
The latest edition of that series concluded on Saturday night with the victory of Unknown Son. Trained by Graham Dwyer of North McLean, and driven to victory by Pete McMullen, Dwyer became the 10th trainer to win the McNeil Final at its 11th running. Doug Lee is the only trainer to win the race twice, while Gary Whitaker is the only driver to have claimed success in the Final on two occasions. Following two rounds of heats, Unknown Son entered the Final with a win and a second placing, and had the support of the punters, sent to the post as the $3.60 favourite. The other 13 runners were left chasing all the way, as Unknown Son and McMullen controlled the tempo to score. Holding a two-and-a-half-metre winning margin over the Grant Dixon trained and driven Aladdin Sane, there was a further 12-metres back to third placed Van Sank for Adam Sanderson for trainer Shannon Price. It has been a whirlwind ride to this point with the four-year-old Unknown Son taking his record to four wins from just nine starts with his McNeil success. The victory was a breakthrough moment for Dwyer and his family that run Kingslodge, landing their first Group victory.

The following is an example of removing temptation at the source.  While Scott Robinson’s crimes were mainly those of a “con man”, it is obvious that a ready market was there.  Integrity Bodies should note this chain of events and re-double their efforts to provide drug free racing.  (commence italics)   Audrey Strauss, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that harness racing's Scott Robinson was sentenced Tuesday (March 9) to 18 months in prison in connection with his years-long sale and distribution of adulterated and misbranded drugs, including performance-enhancing drugs marketed to racehorse trainers and others in the racehorse industry. Robinson pled guilty to a one-count Information on September 16, 2020, before U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken, who also imposed Tuesday's sentence.
U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said: “Scott Robinson created and profited from a system designed to exploit racehorses in the pursuit of speed and prize money, risking their safety and well-being. Robinson sold unsanitary, misbranded, and adulterated drugs, and misled and deceived regulators and law enforcement in the process.” The prison term was accompanied by  $3.8 million fine.(close italics)..
 
  In the land of definitive results we check the driving scores, and come up with Matt Elkins, guiding five winners home for the week, close up Taleah McMullen and Pete McMullen on four apiece. Top trainer was Darrell Graham with three successful runners. Closing in, Matt Elkins, John McMullen and Mark Rees with two each.  Most pleasing, Tildalyn for Steve Coombs, first blood since moving to Purga. Ipswich Factor 27/47..

QUEENSLAND has retained the title, but harness racing was the winner from tonight’s Australian Reinswomen’s Championship.
A dozen of the nation’s leading ladies competed across six heats in Launceston, showcasing the tremendous talent the industry boasts.
Such was the skill on display, five reinswomen made their way into the winners’ circle during the tournament.  It was Dannielle Veivers, however, who finished the series at the top of the table.  Bookending the heats, Veivers accumulated 71 points to seal the win as defending champion, Narissa McMullen, finished second on 56 points, giving Queensland the quinella.
 
Last Saturday night saw the launch of “driver’s colours”, another initiative of the harness code in Queensland, designed to bolster turnover.  The new driver profiles are just another example of exciting innovation that the harness racing code has launched over the last 12 months,” HRA CEO Andrew Kelly said.   “With Racing Queensland set to launch drivers’ colours, the new profiles on Harness.org.au will complement the trial, providing punters and participants with real-time data to enhance engagement and arm consumers with further critical information.  “We expect it to be well-received across the industry going forward.” RISE Head of Digital Products, Charles Tabone expects the next phase of the project will see similar profiles added for trainers.   “Driver profiles are in perfect alignment with our mission – to marry technology and data to drive the success of Harness Racing in Australia. We were proud to play our part in delivering this project and look forward to bringing more data insights directly to fans of the sport through Harness.org.au and other products.”   The drivers’ colours initiative was launched at Albion Park lastSaturday night, with six of the state’s highest profile drivers sporting unique colours with an aim of attracting new fans to the code.

The six drivers are Brendan Barnes, Matt Elkins, Angus Garrard, Narissa McMullen, Pete McMullen and Kylie Rasmussen.  The initiative has seen brands developed to showcase each driver, along with tailored silks, wheels and helmets to make them readily identifiable for audiences both on the screen and at the track.  “Queensland has been at the forefront of innovation within the industry, led by the introduction of Trot Rods, driver-cam footage, and now drivers’ colours,” RQ Executive General Manager Operations Adam Wallish said.  “We are working with our wagering partners to offer unique products around the initiative, and the new driver profiles form a part of that strategy to deliver consumers previously unavailable statistical breakdowns.
 
 
The controversial, (and far more crucial to the harness sports’ survival than our administrators realise), matter of whips in harness racing, rears its ugly head again.( begin italics)  A Tasmanian harness racing trainer and driver says he has no desire to be involved in an industry that requires drivers to carry whips when racing, and is appealing against a steward's ruling that he must carry one.

"I see what horses can do without being whipped and I don't see that inflicting pain to generate a result is necessary if you train them to the best of their ability," Gavin Kelly told ABC Radio Hobart. Kelly became a harness trainer and driver two years ago and said he had never used a whip while racing a horse he trained himself — but at a race meet in December he was fined $1,000 for not carrying a whip. "I was told that it was on safety grounds. I was told I have to carry a whip, I didn't have to use it … from that point I haven't raced because the fines would rack up if I continued to not carry a whip." Kelly has appealed against the ruling to the Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board.  "The laws of harness racing give stewards wide-ranging powers to make directions of participants, and I failed to follow a direction, so we're testing whether that direction was lawful," he said.
"Whether I'm right or wrong under the laws, I feel I'm most certainly right from a social conscience perspective."’
Kelly said he expected the legal challenge to the ruling could cost $20,000. "I didn't take my stance to try and have the whips banned — as much as that outcome would be pleasing to me, it's not my endeavour — but I can't sit by and have directions whereby you're forced to carry a whip. "And in my opinion, it sets back whip reform many, many years.
Whip required to 'direct horse for safety reasons', racing body says
Tasmania's Office of Racing Integrity acting director Tony Latham said he supported the steward's ruling. "The reason why the whip is there — and he doesn't have to hold it, he could have put it in his sulky — just in case something happens to the horse, if it starts moving out or a safety issue, he's got that whip on hand and he can use it to direct the horse for safety reasons," Latham told ABC Radio Hobart. What all the control and integrity bodies in this country are failing to understand, is that Gavin Kelly is showing them the way. The aforementioned bodies have no problem finding a way to promote the sport / industry, via gaudy and hi tech gimmicks like “helmet cam”, “drivers colours” and the like, but are calling for the “garlic and crucifixes” when a simple act of animal protection, is mooted on the two grounds of “humane treatment” and a “more promotable and socially acceptable “ racing product. To talk about the whip being a piece of safety gear, and by so doing, tacitly supporting our core of active, and determined floggers, is treating racing’s potential recreational punter base as “nongs” Which , from the viewpoint of longevity of harness as a sport/industry, is a very dangerous move indeed!!.

Consider the stable hand.
When the justification of “drivers colours” appeared in print as a bait, if you like, to youngsters to head for the mini-trotters as the only viable pathway to driving stardom in harness racing, the STABLE HAND, got a one word mention.
  Apparently our administrators tend to dismiss the stable hand, as, for want of a better term, “unskilled labour”.
Nothing, of course could be further from the truth. A good stable hand must be highly competent in many areas. He or she must have a complete knowledge of every item of harness used in trotting, and total recall of the gear for every horse in the stable. Also a knowledge of what each and every horse eats from day to day, how the feeding regime might change on race day as regards volume and feeding times. How the individual horse is harnessed, (might require a loose girth or crupper, longer cart), care and maintenance of the harness, and grooming of the horse for home days and race days (may differ considerably from horse to horse).

As you see from the above, “stable hand” is a job for dedicated and skilful people, who also must have a nature and personality suitable to the positive handling of a racing horse. They are not all pussy cats, and a good stable hand will soon learn to get on the right side of the animal and exercise peaceful control. We don’t do “one on one” in this country so the above skills might have to be “tuned” and applied to perhaps 6-8 highly divergent equine personalities in the course of any working day.
Stable hands are the backbone of any successful numbers oriented operation. They deserve more recognition – much more!!
 
Remember when, race sulkies were made of high grade stainless tubing, when the sulky was tied down to the shafts with straps, and further secured by a false belly band, and pulled by a breast plate and traces. The wheel bearings were “bog standard” sewing machine issue as opposed to the magic “ceramic “ product, used in the “AMERICAN” speed sulky  Such a nasty anachronism surfaced at Albion Park last Saturday night. Sadly for the modernists, the virtual antique was attached to Northern Muscle, winner of the fast class mobile trot. Some of us just wont fix something that’s not broken, nor spend fortunes for innovations, which are not backed by engineering facts!!

A bit more impressive  among the “sulky sitters”, sisters, Dani Veivers and Taleah McMullen, scoring four wins apiece across the week. McMullen sisters, Danielle (2 wins), and Narissa, (1 win)  added further to their bag of successes, running 1-2  in the “Australian Reinswomen’s Championship” at Launceston Tasmania last Sunday night.   Most pleasing, Matt Crone scoring on Chasin Dreamz, prepared by mum Kay.     As an extra to the Merry Month of May’s three TAB trot meetings, at long last we have a return to genuine  racing, as opposed to “exhibitions”  at the Marburg Show this Saturday, Just the one event, comprising two heats and a Final, all three to be run in a two hour window, 3:00pm to 5:00pmpm and all supported by bulk mini-trotters.. It’s a far cry from the days of Kylie Rasmussen, who set a benchmark, unlikely ever to be beaten.  With no heats on the day, K Rasmussen went round in all the eleven finals programmed, and drove the winner on each and every occasion.. An incredible performance. Show racing was once the backbone of harness in Queensland, and the annual event the highpoint of the country Calendar. One stupid oversight twenty years back lost the Sulky Sitters their most valuable advertising asset, and as is always the case, it has proved most difficult to restore.
 
  In this writer’s 57 year, “hands on”, involvement, we have seen much increase in the speed of the Standardbred. In the early 1960’s, the mark of excellence was to win a race in a mile rate of 2:10.0 or faster.  Better track design and geometry, improved pedigrees, often based on the practice of “breeding back into the herd”, the introduction of the mobile barrier, and changes in the way races are run, have seen the line in the sand, now set at about 1.55.0. All these factors, based on our obsession with “speed, speed and more speed” came together at Marburg on Sunday, when a new track record for the1850 metre distance was set and re-set in the span of two hours and thirty three minutes. Trainer Kay Crone had just that short time to enjoy bragging rights for the un-hoppled pacer, Dollar Bill which recorded a blistering 1:56.6 in Race 4 having 26 metres to spare at the Judge. Lo and behold, Islas Joy, trained by the Lord Mayor of Fernvale, Darrell Graham, came out in the last race and ripped half a second off the so recently established mark. Talk about “fleeting glory”. For the driver it would be a bag of equally rich emotions as rising star ,Angus Garrard drove both the record breakers.
 
On the crest of the speed wave, the Marburg Club, and track curator John Ballin, have to take some credit for consistently producing a track which performs consistently well, regardless of weather conditions.  Who said fast times could not be posted on 700 metre tracks. Marburg has invested wisely in the last several years on it’s racing surface, using only a single product, crusher dust from the Boral Quarry at Peak Crossing. Secondly, sending Ballin to a track seminar conducted at Tabcorp Park, Melton, in Victoria. JB picked up much useful information at this one day school and has applied it to his efforts back home. The Marburg club, its fanbase and Queensland harness generally, have reaped the benefits.
 
  On a day for newsworthy events, in a sport whose administrator’s policies are firmly biased towards the young, veteran John Stariha  turned current thinking on its head, owning,training and reining Magicol Ideal to a narrow victory in race 6. JS ,is hale and hearty at 82 years of age, and ,as through a long hobbyist career, is still turning out his horses super fit and ready for the task ahead. One of the great things about harness racing participation is that, health permitting, it can be along term and successful love affair. John Stariha has another year to go to surpass local identity Kenny Parker, who was 83 when he last greeted the Judge at Redcliffe some years back. KP was there yesterday, in his usual seat, no longer physically able to take part, but with spirit strong as ever, and just enjoying the action. Something to be said for a sport like harness. Something GOOD!

  The driver’s board was again another McMullen  whitewash, Pete getting home on seven occasions, with Dani Veivers (nee McMullen) racking up a solid four wins. The trainers, after we have counted up Chantal Turpins five winners were a bit more evenly distributed.  Ron Sallis took home three, while Mark Rees, Darrell Graham and Peter Greig landed two apiece. Most pleasing, David McKenzie, driving for Ben Battle, successful with Calculated Risk at Redcliffe last Wednesday night.

From time to time you will see press releases from South Australia, appearing in the print media which circulates in the Scenic Rim. There is a simple explanation. Going back some 57 years, this writer  went on holiday to Whyalla in the land of the “crow eaters”, where he had his first sit behind a pacer. So began a love affair, which has lasted from that day to this. No easy ride, no bed of roses, but, for all the lack of genuine “superstars”, and we all want, and all deserve, at least a taste of glory, it has been a very fulfilling experience. Consequently, whenever I see a news item which puts a positive light on South Australian Harness, I feel obliged to share it. If there had been no “South Australian Experience”, it is very likely that i would not be sitting here typing this confession. My life may well have taken a much different course.
 (commence italics)    HARNESS RACING CLUBS UNITE TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE.   

All clubs agreed to work together to promote and foster the industry at all levels and in all areas of SA.  Particular focus centred around the critical role each individual club has in spreading the message of harness racing; on the sharing of ideas; and how clubs can diversify their revenue streams in today’s competitive operating environment. Discussion also ensued on the club’s requirements from HRSA and the role the governing body needs to play in regulating the industry in the state.In a first for some time, all South Australian harness racing clubs, this week, came together and met with representatives of the Board of HRSA to discuss growing harness racing throughout the state.  All clubs were firmly of the view that joint clubs meeting is a great platform from which the industry can plan and grow.  The next consultation meeting will be with the other industry stakeholders before all parties meet together to build the future strategy of Harness Racing in SA.
Chairman of HRSA George Fiacchi commented: “There was an overwhelming feeling of positivity in the room and a strong desire to work together to promote and grow Harness Racing. The sharing of ideas was the highlight with so much great work already happening at a club level. I’m looking forward to this continuing on a regular basis.” (close italics)..
  There is considerable criticism of George Fiacchi. To me he seems to be a hardworking leader, a producer of workable and practical initiatives, which are likely to pull SA Harness out of the swamp!!

In an era where drivers and trainers are posting win figures more in line with those headlined in the US of A, the following, from the research and keyboard of Darren Clayton, reflects a time when trotting/harness racing sold itself, and did that job well. Ben and Tamara Battle are probably “battling” at this stage of their joint career. If we come back and review the situation in a couple of years we may see a significantly different picture. Rome, as they say, was not built in a day!!
             (commence italics)..THE MILESTONE
Ben Battle passed a milestone during the week when claiming his 100th career driving success.  Partnering the Ron Sallis-trained Hot Embers, it was a barrier-to-box performance with Battle firing Hot Embers out from gate one with the pair never headed thereafter.  Hot Embers has now won two races since being under the care of Sallis, with both wins coming at Redcliffe, both when leading throughout and both when being driven by Ben Battle.  Running an even tempo through the opening half, Battle stopped the clock with splits of 30.2 and 30.1 before dialling it up through the third panel with a 28.8 third quarter.  Keeping the fire stoked up the stretch, Hot Embers held on to claim victory by one-and-a-half metres, the 1.57.5 a whisker outside his career best of 1.57.4 from seven career victories.  It has been a big 12 months for Battle, having married wife Tamara in 2020 and the pair moving on to a new property near Mutdapilly.  The hard-working pair have been busy adding touches to the property to have the layout what they want to accommodate their team.  While happy to share the driving of the horses he trains between himself and other freelance drivers, Battle has been able to pick up plenty of outside drives since arriving in Queensland.
But it is not just race driving where Battle finds the most satisfaction.  Educating yearlings is one aspect that Battle has been keen to develop further, with Justa Little Bit likely to be a main player in the upcoming three-year-old QBRED Triad Final - a graduate of the Battle education process.  Over the past few months, another 20 students have been through the Battle property, with the young horses gaining vital education as they transition towards a career in racing.  As Ben and Tamara continue to build their name in Queensland, the quality of horses being sent their way continues to expand.  The latest graduates include yearlings by Captaintreacherous and Bettors Delight, with Battle excited by the stock owners and trainers have sent to him this season.  The next milestone for Ben could just be seeing a horse he educated tasting Group 1 glory.
 
THE WILDCARD---- THEY’RE BACK!!
The McCarthy family really made their mark on the national harness racing stage while based in Queensland before returning to New South Wales almost 10 years ago.  Originally from New South Wales, the transition from a Bathurst butcher shop to a dominant force in Queensland and Australian harness racing has been well documented.  However, on Saturday a new chapter to the McCarthy story was added when Narelle McCarthy started her first runner at Albion Park.  The Creek is the scene of some of the finest moments for the McCarthy family, and Saturday saw Narelle prepare four starters and husband John, one.
Taking out a trainer’s licence in 2019, the McCarthys have returned for a Brisbane campaign and Under Worked became the first starter in Narelle McCarthy’s name in Queensland.  Finishing near the rear behind Maywyns Best in the opening race on the card, the second of Narelle’s four starters was sent to the post as the favourite in race two.  Preparing Taroona Bromac, the gelding found the front early and once in control, held off the challengers to claim a one-metre victory in a new career PB mile-rate of 1.53.0.  Taroona Bromac came to the McCarthy stable from Western Australia where his form had tapered, but the change of scenery has seen a return to form, claiming his 15th career victory following Saturday’s success.  The McCarthy name dominated Queensland harness in the 2000s, and while they have still been a major player during carnival time, will the famous blue and green checks be seen more regularly in the winner’s enclosure at The Creek?   A triple dead-heat for driving honours this week. Matt Elkins ,Dani Veivers and Pete McMullen all landing four wins this week, Chantal Turpinb, top trainer on four winners, hotly pursued by John McMullen, Ron Sallis, Tayla Gillespie, and Mark Rees, all landing two apiece.   Again, sad news. This week we record the passing of A. D. (Tony) Turnbull, who left us due to complications arising from a stroke, suffered some five days earlier. He was 91.Turnbull’s span in the sulky went from May 1947, when he was successful with the mare Knockout, on the tiny 5 laps to the mile Katoomba Showground circuit, to Fairfield, where What Can I Say pulled the Legend home for AD’s last win on 29th of July 2002. It is possible that AD Turnbull may have been the last living trainer/driver to have driven at Harold Park in both the “day time” (before night racing), and the “night time” (after lighting was installed in 1949). Tony Turnbull won many  NSW Western Districts premierships from his Lagoon -  Bathurst base, his driving skills in the horse truck being at least equal to his race driving exploits. Along with his brother Joe, AD ran “LOYAL” Stud, standing the immaculately bred Tasmanian, Loyal Raider, who was followed in his turn by the USA  import, Hondo Hanover. Turnbull Brothers chose both stallions on the premise that a mare which produces a nearly perfect score with her progeny is the one likely to produce a stallion prospect. Horses, which this writer saw race while still living in Sydney, included Lachamfer, Group Nine, Radiant Group, and, of course, the stable superstar, Hondo Grattan. The winner of two Inter-Dominion Grand Finals, retired with stats of 116 starts for 58 wins, 16 seconds and 17 thirds, for a bank of $215,443. All his siblings, and there were quite a few, showed a consistent liking for racing on the “clockwise” or “right handed tracks.
  Little “Hondo,” it seemed, knew in what direction the real money was, and ran accordingly.
  Tony Turnbull did it all in harness racing. It was a lifetime love affair, sometimes blighted by family tragedy, but enduring to the last. He was the ultimate trier and the consistent winner! Every time the tape flew back, or the mobile drew away  the blue with red hoops and red cap were going for their life. Very hard nosed, a super tough reinsman in an era of small tracks where it was shaft over shaft, and the inside shaft often rubbing on the high running rails of the time.  He asked no quarter and gave none, and provided a moral example in all facets of his life. He is gone, and in his going took much of the fabric which made harness great. He bred and trained good and ordinary horses, but they all got their equal chance. He is gone, but he should be remembered as the man who “raised the bar” in Queensland Harness. In his forays North in the early years oF night trotting, AD took too much horse and driver to beat him. The locals had to raise their game to survive! He is gone, but he must NEVER be forgotten!!

    This same week, there is a great sadness at the loss of Sir Lew Edwards, Treasurer, and Racing Minister in the Joh Bjelke Petersen era. Starting his working life as an electrician, Edwards then switched direction to successfully study medicine, and later entered politics as a Liberal. Where, you might ask, is the relevance of this to harness racing. In a more enlightened age, the Queensland Government owned the “tote”, and it was under the banner of the Treasury. By extrapolation, The Treasurer was “Minister For Racing” !
  When it was mooted that the Greyhounds and Harness Racing would share a facility at the Ipswich showground, with the upshot for harness to be a 600 metre (with dog track inside) track similar to that at the old Gold Coast circuit, “Stevens Trotway”, at Queen Street Southport. The project failed after several three way meetings. The original President of the Marburg Pacing Association Brendan Sheehy, and this writer met Dr Edwards, in order to ascertain why no concensus could be achieved between the codes. Dr Edwards, did not mince matters, pointing out that, at the three meetings held, the dogs were totally cooperative and amenable to the move, while harness was equally obstructive, demanding a position as prime tenant to the Show Society while having the right to sub-let the greyhound facilities to the Ipswich Greyhound Club. At the third meeting, Dr Edwards exercised his Ministerial prerogative and Ipswich Harness departed from the Showgrounds for good. In the course of our discussion, the Minister was asked why the two minor codes were continually under fire from the gallops in regard to distribution of funds. The gallops claiming that dogs and trots were subsidised. Dr Edwards then explained to us, that he looked on the three codes of animal racing as three brothers in one family, with an age gap between the oldest brother (Gallops) who had been a long time in a long established and very lucrative business. He took the view that the oldest brother, on the strength of family ties, should be prepared to give support to his younger siblings in their ventures until such time as they could stand on their own two feet.
  Lew Edwards was all those things his titles and achievements suggest, he was Knighted for his contribution to “Expo 88”,  but, above all that, he was a family man, and easily recognisable as a man of the people he represented. He had a good memory for faces. I only met him on two occasions, but I passed him a great many times on my way to the races. Me in the old truck, Lew Edwards driving the Ministerial “Jag”.  Up would go the hand, and the grin would light up the face. It was the MARK of the MAN. If he is not missed, then nobody is missed!

Experienced Queensland driver Peter McMullen loves to go fast and win.  So, a series like the exciting TAB Trot Rods at Redcliffe suits his personality and racing style perfectly.  It was fitting 'Leader Peter' could claim the second edition of the series in 2021.  McMullen and stable newcomer Adam Crocker were the clubhouse leaders going into the final round of heats on Wednesday evening at Redcliffe and while they all tried across the final 10 heats, they could not knock over the scintillating time of 63.8 seconds, set seven days prior.
As a result of their triumph, driver McMullen and trainer Chantal Turpin, Peter’s wife, win a swag of prizes on top of their prize money already earnt.A $10,000 bonus will be awarded to the owners of Adam Crocker with the fastest time throughout the series, thanks to Otto Tuza.  The winning trainer, Turpin, will also receive an Otto Tuza two-horse angled and fully enclosed horse float valued at over $21,000.  “Certainly, I love to go fast, so this series probably suits me,” McMullen said.  “It has been a great night of racing and a great series all around.  “I am pretty excited about taking out the series and being about to take that beautiful float home.  “I need to thank Gary the owner of Adam Crocker for letting us have this horse and letting us go in this series.”
 The four-year-old pacer, Adam Crocker, has been a star since moving to Queensland, registering three straight wins to put his career tally to six victories from 28 starts.  Adam Crocker has won his first three starts for McMullen and Turpin, two at Albion Park and now one up at Redcliffe around the triangle.  Adam Crocker has seen plenty of Australia in his short career, racing and being trained in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and now Queensland.  He has South Australian-based owners, who have long had an association with the leading Queensland stable of McMullen and Turpin.  Following the TAB Trot Rods series, McMullen expects Adam Crocker to go through his classes in the Sunshine State and then potentially be sold to the USA later on.  On top of claiming the 2021 Trot  Rods crown, it was another successful evening for McMullen at Redcliffe on Wednesday, driving three winners.(close italics) “Petes” lifetime  win driving figures ,as of late last week, stood at, this season 105 and, lifetime 2219. Where are they now or next week. We don’t know, but somewhere north of where they are now!

  A summary of Pete’s big week by Darren Clayton.  (italics). Pete McMullen was unstoppable over the weekend, draining winners from all over the track to solidify his position atop both state and national leader boards.  ‘Leader Peter’ broke new ground on Thursday at Redcliffe, when scoring a maiden-breaking win with Misstrepo in the opening event on the card.  The win was McMullen’s 100th driving success for the season and the talented reinsman became the first driver in Australia to hit triple figures this season.  A lean day at Albion Park on Friday was soon cast aside when McMullen again was able to secure a new personal record at Saturday night’s metropolitan fixture.
Steering home five winners on the 11-race card, it was the first time that Pete has scored a quintet of victories at the one meeting.  The last time a driver had been successful with five wins at a single meeting was in January 2017 when Trista Dixon secured the feat. The first of the McMullen five came courtesy of the evergreen Maywyns Best for trainer Graham Dwyer.  Benefiting from the scratching of Turn It Up, the 11-year-old was never in danger once in front when cruising home to an easy victory in a 1.52.1 mile-rate.  Coming back to earth with a thud at his next drive aboard Mister Diamond who finished at the tail of the field, it was the only blemish, as McMullen won aboard each of his next four drives.  Wins came aboard Lombo Heaven leading all the way, Betterthandiamonds who led throughout, Looking Fabulous who was game in a tough victory and a stylish win from a 50-metre handicap aboard the trotter Majestic Simon.  Three of the winners were trained by Pete’s wife Chantal Turpin, with the other provided by Craig McKinnis.  Not content to put the cue in the rack with five metropolitan winners, McMullen then backed it up with a treble at Marburg on Sunday with wins aboard Adrenaline Rush, Shesfeelinprecious and Royal Princess. Overall, Pete drove 14 winners for the week with trebles at Redcliffe on Wednesday and Marburg Sunday, a double at The Creek on Tuesday to match his big Saturday night quintet and a lone victory at Thursday’s Redcliffe fixture.   Just because Pete  was sidelined by the QRIC panel mid week doesn’t keep the McMullen name off the top of the driver’s totem pole. Pete already had five in the can before the sin bin loomed, but sister Narissa McMullen swept on bye to post 7 victories for the week. The trainers ended in a triple dead heat, with Chantal Turpin, Peter Greig and Ron Sallis all putting the polish on three winners apiece. Most pleasing, the trotter,Jansson, trained by Mal Charlton with Steve Doherty in the cart. Ipswich factor 27/59..

  FORMER LOCALS IN THE GLARE OF GROUP RACING AT ALBION PARK.
  Two former Ipswich residents who were reared there and whose common passion saw them team up as life partners more than two decades ago are now seriously centre stage at the current Winter Carnival. Darren Weeks, son of local superstar, Des Weeks, was reared in Briggs Road, while Kylie Rasmusssen  came with her now famous family, from Woodstock  near Townsville,  to the Seven Mile at Rosewood. Never far from the spotlight due to top skills in both training and driving, the duo are heading to the Feature races with two very high class pacers, which appear likely to put bold “BLACK TYPE”  results in the couples resume....Let’s see what QHR’s Jordan Gerrans had to say about it. (commence italics)   Trainer Darren Weeks was not expecting to see the likes of dual-Miracle Mile winner King Of Swing so early in the TAB Queensland Constellations but he believes it will help his star Spankem build into the carnival. With the TAB Queensland Constellations carnival officially launched on Tuesday morning, the big guns of pacers from Australia and New Zealand are set to descend on Albion Park as early as Saturday evening for the Listed Lucky Creed Open Pace (2680m). From the leading Luke McCarthy team, champion pacer King Of Swing is on the way to Brisbane this week for a clash with 2019 Miracle Mile winner Spankem, who is now based in the Sunshine State with Weeks and driver Kylie Rasmussen. Weeks is embracing the challenge of seeing King Of Swing, the TAB Blacks A Fake winner from last year, much earlier than first anticipated. “We were not expecting these good ones to be there quite yet but it will be good, it will make him work a bit harder anyway - it will get him harder,” Weeks said. “There is a real buzz around and it is good for any sport to see the top athletes in those sports on show. “We are really looking forward to Saturday night. “This is why we are in the sport, to get to the top races and race against the best. “It is good that they are coming here and we get to race them in our own backyard.”
McCarthy is likely to have fellow stable stars Expensive Ego and Spirit Of St Louis in Queensland alongside King Of Swing in the near future.  Spankem is considered one of the top handful of pacers based in New Zealand before his recent transfer to Weeks and Rasmussen. He recently departed the team of champion trainer Mark Purdon and driver Natalie Rasmussen in New Zealand. Weeks was a little shocked to get the phone call initially that Spankem was coming to his barn he says, but declared he can always find a box at his stable for a star like Spankem any day.
Racing Queensland's Senior Racing Manager for Harness David Brick is excited to have Spankem - a 20-time career winner from just over 50 starts - in the Sunshine State for the TAB Constellations. “To have him trained in Queensland, Darren and Kylie have had a number of horses sent over to them in recent times and it is fantastic to have a horse like him here, a Miracle Mile winner,” Brick said. “He has won over $1.5 million so it is fantastic for us here in Queensland to have a horse like him sent here. “He is not just sent for one or two races; he will run his whole campaign here. “We are really looking forward to seeing him go around this week against King Of Swing, which is fantastic.”
Spankem’s first Queensland effort did not get off to a perfect start as driver Rasmussen was checked just after start with her sulky contacted by another pacer as she was dislodged. The team bounced back just a week later and won well at Albion Park over 2138 metres as a short priced favourite. Weeks says the untimely incident first-up was not ideal and forced the team to alter their plans, but believes everything is on track now. “He won and went well so we are happy with where he is now,” Weeks said. “He will be fine once the big races come up. “It was a big relief to get past the post first on Saturday night after what happened the week before. “He was really good, he was a bit underdone and Kylie did not turn the whip around or pull out the ear plugs, so he was able to race like how he wanted to. “He got the money, he won and he pulled up like there is still plenty of improvement in him.” Weeks has not mapped out a complete plan for the six-year-old pacer's Queensland campaign just yet but it is sure to include the Sunshine Sprint and the TAB Blacks A Fake - Queensland’s only Grand Circuit event.  The new and improved Queensland winter harness racing carnival in 2021 features 11 Group 1 races and more than $2 million in prize money and bonuses.  (close italics)
Since the above was written, King Of Swing and Spankem have clashed at Albion Park with the win going to King Of Swing with Turn It Up second and Spankem third. Barrier draws may have influenced the result.. Just gives the punters more to think about!
While Spankem is getting most of the headlines ahead of the carnival, Weeks and Rasmussen are also buoyed about the chances of up-and-comer Cat King Cole over the next few weeks. The impressive two-year-old is three wins from just four starts in her young career and the team behind the pacer are excited about what she might be able to produce. She will be on show in the Group 1 QBRED TRIAD Final for 2YO Fillies over 1660 metres on July 24. “We are delighted with the filly, she keeps stepping up and she has never been extended - she is very fast,” Weeks said. “Kylie really likes her so it is all good going forward.” With Cat King Cole and Spankem in Group 1 contention on the final night of the carnival, it could be a massive evening for the Weeks and Rasmussen camp. The TAB Queensland Constellations commences on Friday evening at Redcliffe and culminates in late July with the final night of the carnival featuring an incredible six Group 1s, with the Queensland Derby and Oaks, the Triad Finals and the Queensland Trotters Cup supporting the TAB Blacks A Fake.(close italics)
 
  The new and improved 2021 winter carnival features 11 Group 1 races and more than $2 million in prize money and bonuses. Harness Racing Queensland is breaking new ground with the RISING SUN, a big money event for 3 and 4yos which will be run on July 10 at Albion Park. If you like to see young rising stars chasing big bucks then this is the chance to see it in the flesh. It’s always better “on course”. Don’t miss it!    (commence italics) One of the new highlights of the carnival will be the first-ever The Rising Sun, which is a new race worth $250,000, with 3YOs eligible for a $100,000 bonus should they win the race, which Krug would claim for his connections if he was able to prevail.  “The stakes money and bonus on offer, we are excited for a big race like The Rising Sun,” Cran Dalgety said.   Sometimes, good things happen by accident. An oversight in not taking the harness race numbers to Kilcoy on Sunday morning led to gallops saddle cloth numbers being used as a stop gap solution. Not a howling success, but striking proof that the only numbers for racing horses are large, white and on a solid colour background,. The frog green and white of the TAB are clearly visible and easily read. Dog colours are for dogs, and the sooner our administrators recognise this and replace them, the sooner our audience will be properly served.   Things have certainly changed in the driving arena. Adam Sanderson is back with a vengeance this week leading Pete McMullen  by nine wins to seven.. Teaming up with former boss Darrell Graham is only half the story, as the ex-kiwi reinsman has a seat (as does Pete), in many high profile sulkies. Competition is good for sport it is said. Perhaps a good healthy vendetta is even better. Darrell Graham held down the trainer’s top spot over  Ms Consistency, Chantal Turpin, five winners to four. Most pleasing, a winner apiece for small team trainers Lacey Hinze and Gregg Minns and Nikki chalk in the sulky for G Minns. Ipswich Factor 27/52.

It's been some time since I posted on this thread maybe the mail got lost in cyberspace...this is the latest erdition received today from Denis Smith


Marburg rolls round again this Sunday with yet another Family race day on the cards. All the usual features plus our regular ice cream and coffee van, mini-trotters and a great obstacle course, ,( Free and Supervised), so Mum and Dad  can park the kids for a while and kick back. In the Marburg tradition, all costs pared to the bone with an eye to a great day out at a price to suit the budget. Adults $5, members and Pensioners $3, Race Books $3. Pick the last 7 winners for a share in $2,000. Gates open 11:30am . Official trials before the first race.
 
As the last of the original “harness race fixing” cases, and the ensuing charge of perjury against Mathew Neilson, have been dropped, we can only wonder what direction the government wants to take with the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission. In theory, it seemed a “Giant Leap Forward”. There would be a type of separation of the powers, with Racing Queensland driving the day to day, nuts and bolts of racing. RQ would oversee Race Clubs, collect income from it’s many sources, great and small, handle the distribution of prize money, and to a great degree manage and assist the funding of infrastructure, from their premises at Deagon. Just a short drive down the road to Breakfast Creek, QRIC was established, and we were up and running so it seemed ,to the land of milk and honey, where the previous concept of wholesale corruption of harness racing would be wiped out, once and for all, and the trots would boom again on the back of a punter confidence such as had never been seen before.

WRONG! In practice QRIC has been a partial success, in that their animal welfare policies have given a voice and some real protection to the four legged participants, who actually provide the bulk of the physical aspects of racing. As far as the control of the human element goes it has been as near to a total failure as it is possible to get. The citizens of this State deserve a much better result for their tax dollars, than a series of failed prosecutions, and a gargantuan running cost, to achieve that failure.  This writer still believes in the concept of QRIC, based on a tri-code competent team of stewards, so that participants are very wary of who composes and leads the team on race day, and a complete re-write of the rules of harness racing in Queensland, as RULES rather than a document the size of the Old Testament, composed of loopholes and gobbledygook. We have patrol vision of races which is at the cutting edge. There is no excuse for failure to identify any aspect of a race ,either positive or negative. The same vision should be used to identify any shortfall in application of the rules.  Protection of the punter and elimination of drugs should be the prime focus. The people who designed QRIC around legal principles, must now consider that the application of law, can not enjoy the privilege of being wrong.

On the bright side, if we can take such an optimistic view, after four years on the sideline with only a chapter of horrors to show for it, Mathew Neilson returned to the sulky this week. From a handful of drives, he has already greeted the judge on three occasions. All three winners have been for Haigslea based trainer, Ricky Gordon.
 
        To say that “time flies” is the ultimate understatement. Consider the time lapse mentioned in the following report of the last night of the Winter Carnival from the keyboard of Darren Clayton at Harness Racing Queensland website (commence italics).
  THE MILESTONE
Amazing Dream created a pair of memorable milestones with her deserved victory in the Blacks A Fake., The mighty Tailamade Lombo was the last mare to claim the Queensland Pacing Championship as it was then known, back in 2000.On that occasion the race was held at Gold Coast and in similar fashion, a highly fancied star had started on odds-on favourite in the race. In 2000, it was Courage Under Fire that tasted defeat at the hands of one great mare and 21 years later it was King Of Swing that had to settle for minor money behind another great mare. There were also three local drivers competing in that event in the year 2000 that also went around in 2021 - Grant Dixon, Luke McCarthy, and Shane Graham.
In claiming the passing lane victory, Amazing Dream also smashed a long-standing class record over the mobile 2680-metre trip. The four-year-old mare's record at the distance was previously held by Lilydale, set on May 1, 2004, when pacing the trip in a 2.01.4 mile-rate. Amazing Dream’s 1.55.3 rate on Saturday obliterates that record by 6.1 seconds. Meanwhile, the overall mares record at the trip was previously held by Dancing Navajo in a rate of 2.00.4, set in February 2005 and it has 5.1 seconds carved off the mark. Amazing Dream went within a head of clean sweeping the Constellations in the three events she contested with three Group 1 victories after only being that far away in the Group 1 The Golden Girl. As it stands the million-dollar mare is the only dual Group 1 winner of the 2021 TAB Constellations. It’s fair to say that the Queen has dethroned the King - at least for bragging rights in the Sunshine State in 2021. (close italics).. “In the minds and memories of some of us, ‘twas as a single day”.
 
  Back to the leader board, the barometer of Ipswich foot print harness performance. Drivers in paired results this week, Nathan Dawson and Pete McMullen each scoring on six occasions, Narissa McMullen and Adam Sanderson tied on four. (that’s twenty wins over just four drivers). In the training ranks, Chantal Turpin on top, producing four winners, hotly pursued by Ron Sallis and Ricky Gordon, both with three. Most pleasing. The return of Mathew Neilson, a real worry for the others at the top of the driving tree. It’s called competition, and it is what racing should be all about. Ipswich Factor 35/57.

“BORDER TROTS” 22/10/2021.

  Last Sunday marked a  district milestone when the MPA celebrated its 40th year of operation on Marburg Showground.. The MPA was formed with one clear purpose, that being to make the hobbyist trainers of the Ipswich footprint competitive across all tracks in South East Queensland. The ten or so trainers who met in Bevan Dance’s poolside shed, had chosen Marburg as a central position, ideal for access by our intended customers. Support from Bevan Dance’s mother, who was Secretary of the Show Society and a Show President, Percy Truloff, who realised the drawcard effect of a strong Show Trotting program, the MPA was up and running. The principle of tailoring trials to the individual needs of horses and trainers wherever possible, proved to be the catalyst, and, in a very short time the MPA was catering for 70-80 horses every Sunday Morning. Both workouts, and official trials were run, with club stewards officiating. The benefit was seen very quickly, and in 12 months Ipswich hobbyist trainers and drivers were winning races at Albion Park . Over the next few weeks, more of the Marburg story will unfold.. It is a long journey, and not always a happy one, at times deviating from its core purpose, with less than pleasing results.

  Harness racing had its Genesis with the “trotter”. The natural diagonal gait, one of the four gaits of the “HORSE”, these being walk, trot, canter and gallop, was a natural selection for the transport of goods and people following the invention of the wheel. The trot provided an even pull married to a moderate and controllable speed, and could pull far more weight than he could carry. The horse was the first major factor in the upward progress of the wheel, and the wheel has become pivotal to our daily life. Harness racing/trotting was simply a natural progression, fuelled by Man’s  competitive nature and his desire for speed. This progression was  aided by Man’s adaptability to the “champion” system, where HE was not required to run the race, or fight the fight, but was happy to own or appoint a representative in his place, whether on four legs or two.
 
 History does not “just happen”. Man, by his actions leaves his mark, and these actions can provide significant change in a relatively short time. Two men are currently writing a new chapter in Australian “TROTTING”. Pat Driscoll, through his stud activities under the banner of “HARAS DES TROTTEURS” is pouring superior French blood into our gene pool. While “ALDEBARAN PARK”, the flagship of Duncan McPherson, is importing high class Swedish product.  Below is the latest Aldebaran Park acquisition. Two decades of this activity will totally change the trotter in the Southern Hemisphere. 

The Swedish mare Aldebaran Teal Se Tr 1:58 (Jeune Fille Se – Going Kronos It), in foal to the European trotting megastar Who’s Who Tr 1:54.2 (15 wins and $1,088,875 to date), a son of Reality Pride Se by Swedish champion sire and racehorse Maharajah Tr 1:53.1 (31 wins and $3,679,387), has landed safely at Aldebaran Park, Nagambie, Victoria.
Aldebaran Teal Se is owned jointly by Aldebaran Park Australia and Swedish breeding giant Menhammar Stuteri AB.

The Marburg Pacing Association is about to hold its Annual General Meeting, and Election of Officers for the coming year. This will be held at the Marburg Showground Hall on Monday, November 8th, at 7:00pm. Anyone interested in furthering the sport of Harness Racing in the Greater Ipswich area ,should attend ,take membership and take part in the “ordinary” meeting which will follow the AGM. The MPA is determined to promote and foster Harness Racing in Queensland, but, like any other similar enterprise, the MPA cannot achieve this without ‘soldiers” in the field!!

  Pete McMullen seemingly unassailable on the driving side of things, notching up ten wins for the week. Second home was Narissa McMullen with half that number. While Nathan Dawson was next in posting four victories.  Am much more even spread on the trainers board with Narissa McMullen. Chantal Turpin , Ricky Gordon and John McMullen all preparing two winners over the six meetings run. Most pleasing was Ricky Gordon doing the trainer/driver thing to take the last two races at the Redcliffe Sunday meeting. Ipswich Factor 31/54..

  A race day to remember , was Albion Park on last Tuesday 19/10.  All eight winners were either trained or driven by residents of the Greater Ipswich Harness footprint.  Never before. Our criteria for results reporting in this publication is that either the trainer or the driver reside in the district. Hence the “Ipswich Factor”, which compares the eligible winners against the total of races run in the reporting week, which at this time is Friday to Thursday inclusive. On balance, this event should have occurred a long time ago, given that over 105 trainers, including some with large teams of horses, now live in the Marburg Catchment.

  As we already know, Marburg harness is an evolving project, as the current committee (recently re-elected) is forever searching for an operating plan which does the most good for the bulk of the sport. At this point in time, there is no focus directed towards the promotion of the commercial breeding and sales sector. In the main, the Marburg effort is directed toward the “hobbyists”, many of whom reside in the MPA catchment. In the last twelve months, Sunday morning workouts have been conducted on non-race days. These are not trials, but organised training sessions, designed to assist trainers with small teams, and the slower horses from professional establishments, (they all have them). This gives valuable experience to horses which would otherwise turn up at the “Qualifying” trials, having never worked with another horse.  A small, but dedicated group of volunteers turn up on a Sunday morning, and provide seriously “slow” education with the Club’s mobile barrier, and workout fields are assembled on the principle of oranges working with oranges, while trainers are asked to indicate what level of competition is required. At the beginning, it was a struggle with only 3-4 horses turning up, but the volunteers soldiered on, the fee to cover costs to the club was lowered to an affordable $2 per horse, and currently we are providing the service to from 12-20 runners per session. Hopefully, there will be a significant rise in numbers when next year’s juveniles come through the system. The MPA is doing its best to provide “entry level” opportunity , aimed at re-building owner, trainer and driver levels at the base of the Qld Harness pyramid.

The following, an industry release from Racing Queensland, tells a story, which motivates the Marburg efforts. Read it, and make of it what you will.
 
( begin italics)The Queensland racing industry will receive a further $7.5 million in funding from January 1, 2022 as part of an accelerated Investment Growth Plan which will deliver $15.3 million over the next 12 months. With $7.5 million of prize money and riding and driving fee increases delivered at the start of the year, a further $28.9 million increase was announced in late July through the Palaszczuk Government’s budget commitment of returning 35% of Point of Consumption taxes back to the racing industry. Following record-breaking returns to participants in 2020/21, further increases will be delivered in the New Year after the Australian wagering market continued to perform strongly throughout the first quarter of 2021/22, along with infrastructure grants and expanded animal care funding. “This is made possible by the Palaszczuk Government’s changes to fund 35% of the Point of Consumption tax back to the industry," Racing Minister Grace Grace said.
It has enabled Racing Queensland to not only bring forward funding from July 2022 to January 2022, but to increase it from $7.5 million to $15.3 million.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s continued support of racing has seen a significant increase in economic contribution across the state. “With more than 12,500 Queenslanders now employed in racing – an increase of more than 1,000 over the past two years – the Queensland racing industry continues to make a significant contribution to the state’s economy.” Having already delivered two funding tranches this year, Racing Queensland Chairman Steve Wilson AM said further support would be provided in the New Year including prize money increases for provincial, regional and country, along with harness and greyhounds.  Approximately $4 million annually will be provided to replacing critical racing assets and infrastructure.  “With almost 40,000 participants across the state, it’s imperative that we provide them with the ongoing support – and confidence – to continue to work and invest within the Queensland racing industry,” Mr Wilson said  “Having grown annual returns to a record-high of $271 million in FY21, a year-on-year increase of 22%, we continue to set aggressive targets for the benefit of the industry as a whole.

“As part of the funding announcement, provincial, regional and country racing will be supported, while greyhounds are a major beneficiary of prize money increases after enjoying a record year of growth and strong profitability.
“Already positioned as one of the top-five richest greyhound races in the world, the Brisbane Cup will grow to $525,000 with $350,000 going to the winner.
“There is also $3 million in general prize money increases for the greyhound code.”

Up-coming prize money increases include:

Thoroughbreds. $5.5 million in increased prize money primarily for grass roots racing including:
•   Increases of $1.5k-$2k for all provincial TAB races across QLD;
•   Introduction of an SEQ $50k showcase race weekly;
•   A $2k boost for country TAB races to enhance returns in regional and remote areas. 
Greyhounds .$4.6 million in increased prize money including:
•   $3.0 m increase to general prize money spread across all classes and distances;
•   Increasing the appearance fee to $100 for staying races, and $80 for sprint and middle-distance races between 498m and 699m;
•   Increasing unplaced prize money to $20 for all classes and distances;
•   $685k increase for Group race events including the Brisbane Cup rising to $525k ($350k to the winner), taking the Golden Sands (600m) to Group 1 prize money and taking the Capalaba, Rockhampton and Bundaberg Cups to Group 2 prize money;
•   $313k increase for non-Group feature events across all tracks; and
•   $150k allocation towards races for Queensland bred greyhounds.
•   Further funding earmarked to address critical racing assets including:
•   Front and back straight and sectional cameras at all tracks; and
•   Delivery of the Bundaberg track rebuild.
Harness. $800,000 in increased prize money including:
•   Creating an additional Saturday night $20k feature races at Albion Park; and
•   Increasing trainers’ winning percentage to 10%.
Marburg races next on Sunday December 5th. This leads us into our Christmas feature meeting on Sunday 19th. A big focus  on the kids that day, as Marburg puts a splash of Festive Cheer on the run in to the big day. Don’t miss it !!

Again, Pete McMullen on top in the deriving department with six wins, hotly pursued by Matthew Neilson getting the nod on five occasions, while Nathan Dawson is gathering momentum again, posting four victories for the week. For the trainers, John McMullen led the way, leading in three of the best, while most pleasing was shared by two ladies, Dale Belford presenting Turn Turn flyer in winning form on two occasions while Nicole Hanrahan got the bikkies with Bustinfeelzgood.
