"TROT TACTICS"  10/05/2020..
The following  is a take out from john Lingard's website "Lets Go Horse Racing"–, and is a report by News Ltd reporter, Leo Schlink, concerning the latest initiative to be proposed by the Harness and Greyhound control bodies of Victoria. That is, the running of harness and dog racing on Saturday mornings.
( LGHR)  "Here’s hoping Albion Park follows the lead of the Victorians because let’s face it – they can’t attract a crowd at night and have to throw the gates open with free entry – so it couldn’t be worse in the morning."
( begin italics)  LEO SCHLINK reports for NEWS LTD that Saturday mornings will become the domain of harness and greyhound racing with early meetings scheduled from May In a joint initiative, Harness Racing Victoria and Greyhound Racing Victoria will host Saturday morning meetings as part of a three-week trial from May 9-23. HRV chief executive Dayle Brown and GRV CEO Alan Clayton said: “Saturday morning racing presents an important strategic opportunity for our racing codes. “The additional race meetings will provide extra earning potential for our hardworking participants and enable our products to reach new audiences during a period when people are hungry for sporting entertainment.” Brown and Clayton said “each of these meetings will be thoroughly reviewed from a wagering, broadcast and brand perspective”. “This will help guide our future strategy regarding Saturday morning racing. We are also pleased to be working so collaboratively on this project.” Melton will host the three Saturday morning trots meetings, while the greyhound meetings will be shared between Ballarat (May 9 and 16) and Shepparton (May 23).close italics)
(LGHR) "Sadly, the dogs are being bundled in with the ‘red hots’ when they are far more popular with punters in Queensland. For too long harness has ridden on the back of the gallops in the afternoon and twilight time slots. If it can’t stand on its own two legs in Queensland then like any business that fails it should not be funded to the degree it currently is."----- There you have it. The next "silver bullet", designed to save us from oblivion. Rather than go chasing punters in an area which is likely to be a "ghost town", just for once think about the product. Surely, after more than two decades of decline some administrator in a position of power will bite the bullet and give the punters a racing format which provides a form line!!!
Yet another happy story from the Australian Harness Racing website this week.(begin italics) "A $10,000 bonus will go on the line at Redcliffe Paceway on Sunday night as the inaugural Trot Rods series reaches a thrilling finale. With the state’s top-five drivers behind the reins, the final eight heats will be staged under rapid-fire conditions on Sky Racing with just 20 minutes between each 947-meter race and a raft of broadcast enhancements. Sky Racing will showcase the Trot Rods card across the nation on Sky Racing 2 (Foxtel channel 527) at no extra charge to Foxtel customers who already have access to Sky Racing 1 (526).Sky’s broadcast coverage will include initiatives such as driver cam, new racing angles and caller-to-driver audio. Over the past eight weeks, Redcliffe has hosted a Trot Rods heat each Wednesday, with the aptly named Dashing Hannah setting the fastest time thus far at 65.63.

If that mark cannot be lowered, the Clint Petroff-trained mare will walk away with the $10,000 bonus for the fastest lap throughout 16 heats.“The inaugural Trot Rods series has well and truly exceeded our expectations,” Racing Queensland COO Adam Wallish said.“It was designed to attract new audiences – the broadcast enhancements have played a key role in enhancing the coverage – but it has clearly captured the public’s imagination.“Throughout March and April, the Trot Rods heats have generated a 10% uplift in turnover in comparison to the other races on the Redcliffe card.“Innovations such as driver cam have performed strongly across social media and have created widespread debate.”On Sunday night, Queensland’s top-five leading drivers –Brendan Barnes, Pete McMullen, Narissa McMullen, Adam Sanderson and Paul Diebert – will exclusively contest the eight heats.Sky’s showcase coverage will be headed up by Britany Graham, while the voice of Queensland harness racing, Chris Barsby will join the team calling the action and interviewing drivers pre-race." (close italics).

The most mysterious happening in Queensland, is the lack of race meetings for the MPA. Our next venture into the hard world of Queensland harness Racing will be June 29th. With the Marburg Club boasting an impressive track record in effort to provide entertaining and spectacular racing, as well as total commitment to drawing a crowd based on budget priced family entertainment,it is a far from pleasing situation. While the MPA recognises that RQ is trying to run a business, the control body must realise that it needs all the spokes in its wheel all of the time.

No great change on the leader board with Pete McMullen  doubling the score of his nearest rival, who just happened to be his sister Narissa , the result was eight wins to four. Again Chantal Turpin was leading trainer, four winners for the week. Most pleasing, super presenter, Nikki Chalk, with Mac Sweeney at Redcliffe, husband Dale in the sulky.Others to shine were,Alex Tee , trained by Jason Carkeet with Chris Geary on the steer, and The Hummer, sent out by Peter Donohoe ,sulky sitting by John Cremin. Ipswich factor 31/51..

  "TROT TACTICS" 16/05/2020..

The "TROT RODZ" Series, a succession of weekly one lap dashes,(race 6 on 8 Wednesday nights at Redcliffe, and an 8 dash program last Sunday) has been run and won by With The Band trained by Donny Smith. High profile driver Paul Diebert had the steer. The daughter of Changeover recorded an extrapolated "mile rate" of 1-50.2 over the 947 metres jorney... Whatever your views on the whole concept, it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good. A number of smaller and/or hobbyist trainers were able win dashes. Phil Keats (Prenzlau) with Living Free, Ricky Gordon (Haigslea) Risky Buziness with Narissa McMullen in the cart, Clint Petroff ( Patrick Estate  ) and Lachie Manzelmann ( Wanora) managed a win apiece with the aptly named Dashing Hannah which changed stables at some point in the series. Other smaller trainers, outside the footprint,  were Alan Sanders with Downtown Lucca, Charlie Chiang, Patchwork Jet and Barboo, Mark McNee,Lifes Black, and Rob Gorman, Artful Jinks. That the battlers were able to snag 50% of the heats, is pleasing indeed... Next week..Who is "Quality Cam"?

Where do we go when the Covid 19 pandemic ceases to be a disruptive factor in Queensland harness racing's daily life. Will we return to what participants viewed as "normal", or will we be left with significant alterations to the status quo. The first factor is, that we have managed to survive so far without on-course patronage, (if our current performance figures equate to "survival"). As you read this, it is very likely that there are people in the harness halls of power, who are considering the option of NO people on course ever again. It has been mooted in the past, commencing with the genesis of Sky Channel, that " we don't need a crowd at the track, every one will get pay TV ". They didn't,as it turned out, but the seed was sown. From a similar line of thought , came the the statement that, "we don't need ordinary people on course, we have the professional punters".  They went as well, possibly from one of two causes. (a) The consistent refusal of the control body to supply a punter friendly racing product,or (b) A refusal of clubs to supply "cashback" incentives to the "pros", this being illegal, combined with the relentless march of technology, making a home-based operation not only feasible, but easily attainable!!

Given the above hypothesis, it might be reassuring to the base of the pyramid for RQ to issue a statement to the effect ,that, when the dust settles, not only will trots fans be welcome back at the track, but clubs will be positively encouraged to see that this is the case! Clubs must also ensure that a reasonable entry fee be charged ($5) and food and beverage charges be kept at budget prices.  We have been drifting away from the exiting, spectacular, FAMILY entertainment that harness racing was in Queensland . We must accept that the "Elite Sport" experiment has been a dismal failure  for all but those who were already getting the cream, and retrace our steps. The sooner the on-track participants understand that there is a crying need for everybody to put something back into the game  other than turning up and taking out, the sooner the sport will regain a healthy image. The blueprint for our future is most definitely in our past!

No changes to the premier spots on the leader board this week. Pete McMullen still the leading driver on six wins for the week with sister Narissa again clocking up four of the best. On the training side, Chantal Turpin still hanging in there with four winners, hotly pursued by Dave Russell and Stephanie Graham on three apiece. Most pleasing ,again, all the way wih Danny Gatt-Bouquet and Lettucefirestar. Another to shine, Darren Ebert, thanks to Chump Chop and Whately..Ipswich factor 31/54..

"TROT TACTICS" 23/05/2020..

Absolute top line race drivers in the harness business are more or less "born, rather than made".  Like all champions, they have a number of extra skills, which  are not available to the average reinsperson . The ability to establish a workable relationship between driver and horse in the brief few minutes (preliminary and pre-race circle), prior to  racing is often all it needs to turn a loser into a winner. One such gifted young driver is Zac Chappenden, who left school to work in the Deception Bay area stable of his parents, battlers, Melissa Kendall and Phil Chappenden. That was his first milestone, having, as he said wanted to "do this, since I was a baby".First licenced in the 2018/19 season, ZC  broke through for that all important first win, at his 42nd appearance behind  Aroona, a pacer trained by his mother. 18/19 and 81 starts, netted 2wins, and 20 placings for earnings of $24,402.. In only his second term in the sulky, Zac's lifetime stats as of last Thursday stand at  350 drives for 26 wins, 36 seconds and 43 thirds, and the bank balance has grown to $168,229. ZC's second milestone was achieved in the recent Queensland Young Drivers Championship, when he  blitzed his opposition by a massive 20 points. The best horse ZC has driven  came his way on the last night of the series, in the shape of Sam Is Perfection, a rising talent in the Jack Butler stable."Sammy" not only clinched the Series, but provided Zac with his first Saturday night win. There you have Zac Chappenden, forcing his way up the ladder of harness success from the base of the harness pyramid.. No leg-ups for this bloke, whose ambition is to be "the best driver I can". Horses run for him, and his discussion of things which have happened in a race display a maturity far beyond his years. Zac Chappenden is on the go, and he is going far!!

There are probably only two chances for a participant of modest means to acquire a top class horse.  Buy a lower priced yearling and hope like hell that it fires, or breed one by a well bred and performed, but unpopular stallion. In 2011 Toogooloowah  based breeder , George Michael bid a lowly $200 for a 13 year old Canadian import called Quality Cam, a son of champion pacer, Camluck. Basically unwanted back home, and with no slick promotion machine to boom his prospects down under, QC was headed for obscurity or worse, til George put up his hand. In the  ensuing 9 years till now it seemed that he had done the disappearing trick again. There are only 31 foalings recorded in that time. In the last few months the only five to have raced, and likely the only five that have been tried, have all won, including Melton Lucky which won at Redcliffe today, Thursday, just in time to make this column. Included in this list is a 3yo trotting filly, Quality Sunset, which has won 2 from 7 (including Melton) and a massive 2nd after breaking badly at Ballarat. This filly appears at this time to be a realistic Oaks prospect. George has a large number of horses at Toogooloowah, some by Bonomax (unbroken)and is open to realistic offers for most of them. From the breeding aspect, Quality Cam has become an out-cross by the passage of time.  The last line of his pedigree is loaded with the best of the 50's and early 60's USA male lines,an era when strength was as important as sheer speed. I believe that to go to a stallion with that type of background is called "breeding back into the herd", and can be very successful. Quality Cam will stand for $1,100, GST included and free return if no foal. Just might help some battlers to stay in the game..

Changes on the leader board this week.On the drivers totem pole, Taleah McMullen was on the high point with four wins, just one ahead of older sister Narissa McMullen . Top trainer went four ways with Chantal Turpin, Darren Ebert, Ricky Gordon and Trent Dawson, all leading in a pair of winners. Most pleasing, Elizabethan Era for Allan Godwin, Trent Moffat in the sulky, Taleah McMullen's treble at Redcliffe on Sunday, and Trent Hodges and Noel Parrish, landingthe Last Starfire at Redcliffe Thursday.
