Each to there own, i guess.
I consider it the greatest spectacle in horse racing. No-one wants the horses injured though.
The problem with Australian steeplechasing lies with the fact that the horses that are steered into jumps are usually bred for the flat but sadly, just don't make the grade. The current wave of public outcry stems predominantly from this issue.
Jumps racing in the UK has at least an equal share in the industry and consequently has more money available for owners, breeders and trainers available to it. Subsequently horses that do jump are likely bred specifically for the job. I would guess that horse fatalities per number of races and entrants is far lower lower by percentage in the UK compared to Australia (or at least until the new laws were introduced) for these reasons.
Steeplechasing in Australia is doomed not through it's cruelty but through lack of finance, foresight and management of livestock.
