Aliens exist but they may be dangerous: Hawking April 26, 2010 - 12:34PM

Aliens may exist but mankind should avoid contact with them as the consequences could be devastating, British scientist Stephen Hawking warned on Sunday.

"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," the astrophysicist said in a new television series, according to British media reports.

The programmes depict an imagined universe featuring alien life forms in huge spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own planet dry.

"Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach," Hawking warned.

The doomsday scenario is suggested in the series Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking on the Discovery Channel, which began airing in the United States on Sunday.

On the probability of alien life existing, he says: "To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational.

"The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like."

Glowing squid-like creatures, herds of herbivores that can hang onto a cliff face and bright yellow predators that kill their prey with stinging tails are among the creatures that stalk the scientist's fantastical cosmos.

Mankind has already made a number of attempts to contact extraterrestrial civilisations.

In 2008, American space agency NASA beamed the Beatles song Across the Universe into deep space to send a message of peace to any alien that happens to be in the region of Polaris - also known as the North Star - in 2439.

But the history of humanity's efforts to contact aliens stretches back some years.

The US probes Pioneer 10 and 11 were launched in 1972 and 1973 bearing plaques of a naked man and woman and symbols seeking to convey the positions of the Earth and the sun.

Voyager 1 and 2, launched in 1977, each carry a gold-plated copper phonogram disk with recordings of sounds and images on Earth.

Is it?  The article only mentions 'America'.  Ask any Latin American if they are American, and the answer will be a resounding 'yes'.  His first landing was in the Bahamas, but most prominent connection was with Hispaniola - part of Latin America, or America.

Columbus doesn't deserve creditation here. He had predecessors.

His charts came from Zheng-He?

History will eventually be re-written.

The realities of the universe, its size and the numbers involved tell me it is highly likely it exists somewhere else. What form etc who knows.

Columbus miscalculated the circumference of the globe.  When he hit the Americas, he had very nearly run out of provisions.  He had only taken as much as he did, because he thought that Asia was as far away from the Canaries as the Americas actually were.  When he arrived in the Americas, he thought he was arriving in Asia, or the Indies, hence West Indies, (Red) Indians, etc.  He went to his grave convinced that everyone else was wrong, that he had not discovered a 'New World', but the eastern edge of Asia.  He only discovered the New World, because he phucked up.  I wouldn't want to claim being responsible for the theories he subscribed to re: global geography.

At any rate, he's acknowledged here only because of the the European conquest and settlement of the Americas which followed, and the consequences thereof.

One would have to be pretty naive to think that in a universe as big as we know it is (and it is probably even bigger) that planet Earth sustains the only lifeform.
Most would like to think we are the most intelligent life there could possibly be lol
Humans are imbeciles.
War,theft, murders, hatred, greed, starvation the list goes on
How "intelligent"are we?

I've always believed this Planet would be a peaceful place if Women ruled it.

No mother wants to send her Son/s to an early death.

I say Give the Women a chance to run this place, before the Aliens take over.

Doing the Math if there are 50 million Suns out there & a 100 billion planets then I guess it would be naive to think we are the only lucky planet that live formed on. Also on Earth there are thousands of different life forms, some which humans are still discovering.

We've only had a small number of humans who have gone into space. They have seen things which they can't explain.

It's a huge universe out there & our planet is an insignificant dot in the scheme of things.

I need to lie down.  smiley
