Ken Howard (1910 - 1976)

www.racingmuseum.com.au

Born in 1910, Ken Howard was to become one of the most familiar voices in Australia as the man who brought the colour of Sydney racing to hundreds of thousands of radio listeners throughout the country.

He called for over 40 years and also took his skills overseas, visiting England to call the Derby.

Ken Howard was also famous for his signature phrase "London to a brick on" and for calling races from trees and boxes positioned outside racecourses.

There have been many great race callers but you have named two of the best KEN HOWARD and BILL COLLINS. I listen to the callers of today and some are good, very good, but none are a patch on these two gentlemen, they added so much 'color' to their calls and never missed a beat, they painted a picture of a race for every one to 'see'.

Cheers Gerry.

Throw Bert Bryant into the mix here. But these guys HAD to accuarately describe a race because there were no monitors to give punters an incite. They had to do the hard yards & give a race justice. Only a very few like them now. Here in the West Max Simmonds was always & still could be the measuring stick. Its alright to have colour & flair but above all call the race & get the placegetters right.

Yes, they were the GREATS and we will always miss them.

Today we have a few really good ones and a few really bad ones.  However, I would not like to have to do their jobs.  It seems we are never satisfied and they cop more brickbats than bouquets.

In my opinion, anyone who can and does call a race is doing a damned fine job.  I'm flat out keeping the glasses on one horse, let alone up to 20!!!
