Just flicking through the form for the York races Wednesday, and I see Starspangledbanner makes his UK debut for Aiden O'Brien in the 1200m G2 Duke of York Stakes.

The opposition are all 2nd string UK sprinters. Genuine listed - G2 at a stretch, but none of the good ones are running here. The fave, Main Aim, is a decent horse, but if SSB is primed, knowing how much better the Aussie sprinters generally are than the UK sprinters, then he should win easily.

I know if I was the owner, I would have made sure he was set for this race to pick up what should be an easy win. Will be a different story when he gets to the G1s.

I remember SSB was pretty good, but it seemed to be a year with no real stand out sprinters, so I am not sure he is of the same quality of horse that has been sent over in previous years - Scenic Blast, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti etc.

Disagree, think his Caulfield Guineas win will always go down in history, for several reasons.

a) He was underrated leading into the race, and had without doubt, the best form leading into event;

b) Denman was the hot favourite, and being touted as the "next best thing" but couldn't even run in the first 3;

c) Who has come out of the race since.

On c) alone two superstars have come out of the race, So You Think and Starspangledbanner.  Manhatten Rain went on to run 2nd to SYT in the Cox Plate, Denman was unbeaten in the autumn until the Australian Guineas, Carrara has been honest wherever he has raced placing 2nd/3rd/4th in stakes events, Trusting could be anything when right (we saw what he did at his third start as a 3yo in the spring at Group 2 WFA level), Extra Zero was 2nd in the Derby and was a Group 2 winner in the autumn of the Autumn Classic and will probably be aimed at a Cup campaign now that he is gelded.

Starspangledbanner will miss the 2010 Australian breeding season with Coolmore electing to keep the July Cup winner in training.

The winner of two Group One races in Australia, Starspangledbanner was sold to Coolmore earlier this year.

The intentions were to give him a short northern hemisphere campaign before returning him to Australia for the spring.

The colt's short campaign has resulted in two Group One wins in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot and the July Cup in the early hours of Saturday morning (AEST).

The first Australian-bred horse to win the July Cup, Starspangledbanner will embark on a campaign which could include some of the world's biggest sprint races.

"Following extensive discussions, it has been decided that Starspangledbanner will race on this season," Coolmore Australia general manager Michael Kirwan said.

"On the basis of his devastating wins in both the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot and in the July Cup, it is evident that the horse is still improving.

"He has earned the right to be considered a great horse with his efforts so far and it would seem premature to retire a horse of this calibre at a time when he is proving himself a dominant performer.

"His feats to date mark him down as a special horse and (trainer) Aidan O'Brien is keen to pursue further opportunities with him."

Among those opportunities is the Breeders' Cup meeting at Churchill Downs in early November.

Would rather see them head to Hong Kong for a race like the International Sprint, which IMO is the world's best sprint event.
