Just flicking through the form for the York races Wednesday, and I see Starspangledbanner makes his UK debut for Aiden O'Brien in the 1200m G2 Duke of York Stakes.

The opposition are all 2nd string UK sprinters. Genuine listed - G2 at a stretch, but none of the good ones are running here. The fave, Main Aim, is a decent horse, but if SSB is primed, knowing how much better the Aussie sprinters generally are than the UK sprinters, then he should win easily.

I know if I was the owner, I would have made sure he was set for this race to pick up what should be an easy win. Will be a different story when he gets to the G1s.

I remember SSB was pretty good, but it seemed to be a year with no real stand out sprinters, so I am not sure he is of the same quality of horse that has been sent over in previous years - Scenic Blast, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti etc.

He is his only danger, if he turns up in form he wins.

I backed the #7 because it reminds me of Mark Arbib.

Looked very hard, in parading SSB, not big and strong, like we are used to seeing him here in OZ  Undecided

He actually had some form...2nd to Equiano over 5f.

I would never back a horse solely on its' name.

One more bet for me. #11 in the last, Sidney Melbourne.

RETIRED

Royal Ascot winner and European champion sprinter-elect Starspangledbanner has been retired to stud at Coolmore for the 2011 season.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old proved a huge hit following his transfer from Australia, winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting and following up in the July Cup at Newmarket.

Already a winner at the top level over a variety of trips Down Under, the chestnut was also second in the Nunthorpe at York before finishing fifth in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock.

Coolmore's Eddie Fitzpatrick said: "Starspangledbanner is a very imposing individual with a strong page and is rated a superior sprinter to his sire Choisir.

"Aidan was completely blown away by the times he was clocking in his work prior to Royal Ascot and he showed that brilliant speed in both the Golden Jubilee and the July Cup."

O'Brien, who trained two European champion sprinters in Mozart and Stravinsky, said: "Starspangledbanner is an incredible horse - the fastest we've ever had here. It was a great pleasure to have him."

Coolmore's Christy Grassick added: "I am certain breeders will be most impressed when they come to see him and he has the advantage of being a virtual outcross for the vast majority of mares here."

I have no doubt that what we saw over him over the mile smashing the likes of So You Think & Denman was the tip of the iceberg.

i wish he was given the chance to run over that trip again instead of Coolmore keeping him to those sprints.

First up, great move but I think they erred by keeping him at those short distances
