VRC introduce a bonus for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes
Clinton Payne
Tuesday, 8 June 2010

The VRC will offer a “consolation bonus” if a horse balloted out of the 150th Melbourne Cup can win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington five days later.

VRC chief executive, Dale Monteith, announced the $100,000 initiative on Tuesday, which, if won, would take the first prize for the Group III race to $250,000.

“It is arguably every owners dream to have a Melbourne Cup runner, and to get as close as having a Cup final acceptor, yet miss out on a place in the field of twenty-four, would be an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience,” Monteith said.

“The Club’s offer will also act as an incentive for connections to continue to participate in the Melbourne Cup carnival program; on average, about 40 per ent of the horses balloted from the Melbourne Cup, from year to year, do not race at the carnival in other events.”

The VRC board also increased the distance for the 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes from 2500 metres to 2600 metres and the programming amendment has been endorsed by Racing Victoria.

I like the idea - but what excites me most is that the VRC are obviously expecting a bonanza year. Tell me if you think I have this wrong, but I think that they know they are going to get a lot (A LOT) of internationals this year. It is the 150th Melbourne Cup after all, and one of the richest races in the world. Every international visitor (human) who has been here has enjoyed the atmosphere. They know it is going to be huge.

By doing this, they are protecting themselves as best they can from the backlash which will occur if say there are 10-12 internationals in the race.

Does anyone think I'm missing the point? That seems like a logical idea to me.

because you'd only get a 3 horse field, more than likely

It would look like on of those pommy races lol

I expect the distance increase is solely due to the rail placement on the last day - 8m or so usually, which makes the joke 2500m start an even bigger joke.

However, why not automatically put horses balloted out of the cup into the 2800m race on Cup day, and make this an SWP race?
