Racing Victoria

Racing Victoria stewards on Friday inquired into the analyst’s report on the urine sample provided by Stathi Katsidis at Flemington on the 3rd November 2007.

The analyst had reported the presence of Phentermine an anorectic (appetite suppressant).

Evidence was taken via telephone from Stathi Katsidis and from Dr J Vine, Director of RASL.

Stathi Katsidis pleaded guilty to having delivered a sample of urine which was found on analysis to contain the presence of a banned
substance Phentermine.

Stathi Katsidis was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Thursday, 15th November, when he was stood down from riding and to conclude at midnight on Saturday, 22nd December 2007.

Prior to Stathi Katsidis riding track and in trials, he must produce a
clear urine sample.

Tragic circumstance...a suspected drug overdose.
It is widely known that jockeys use some narcotics (cocaine) to subdue their appetite and hence keep their weight down.
It is a practice that, in my view, is not monitored enough and certainly doesn't carry a harsh penalty in comparison to any other sport.

Weights are too low!
Raise the minimum weights to a level where jockeys are not putting their lives in danger to make ridiculous weights.
WFA is a joke...there are only a handful of jockeys in the world who can ride a 3yo at WFA. Most of them probably women.
Glen Boss looked like a skeleton on SYT last year in the cox plate...clearly unhealthy at a weight he would not usually ride.

It would be a tragic, tragic circumstance that a jockey has lost his life in the belief that drugs are needed for him to maintain a weight and keep his career.

Who knows. Maybe felt pressure of the upcoming ride. Has a history of it and perhaps unfortunately turned to it to escape the pressure.

Whatever the reason it doesn't matter. It is just a tragic waste of a talented life.

Condolences to family and friends of Stathi.

Terrible news indeed....FF cocaine is not a narcotic....and none of us knows what has happened until the poor buggers
blood tested etc etc. He may have had heart attack after using something stimulatory, he may have used something on the slower side...
whatever has happened a great waste and unfortunate event. Vale Stathi.

narcotics n. 1) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required. Among these "controlled substances" are heroin, cocaine, L.S.D., opium, methamphetamine ("speed"), angel dust, hashish, and numereous chemically-designed hallucinagenics, as well as drugs with a legitimate medical use such as morphine. Dealing in any of these narcotics is a felony (subject to a prison term) under both state and federal laws, although mere use may be a misdemeanor. Marijuana is also an illicit narcotic, but possession of small amounts for personal use is a misdemeanor in most states
