Racing Victoria

Racing Victoria stewards on Friday inquired into the analyst’s report on the urine sample provided by Stathi Katsidis at Flemington on the 3rd November 2007.

The analyst had reported the presence of Phentermine an anorectic (appetite suppressant).

Evidence was taken via telephone from Stathi Katsidis and from Dr J Vine, Director of RASL.

Stathi Katsidis pleaded guilty to having delivered a sample of urine which was found on analysis to contain the presence of a banned
substance Phentermine.

Stathi Katsidis was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Thursday, 15th November, when he was stood down from riding and to conclude at midnight on Saturday, 22nd December 2007.

Prior to Stathi Katsidis riding track and in trials, he must produce a
clear urine sample.

Jockey Stathi Katsidis' dream run has continued but this time away from the racetrack with a successful appeal against a careless riding suspension.

Katsidis was suspended for seven meetings by stewards after being found guilty of careless riding aboard the winner Cicarelli in a Class Three Plate (1500m) at Eagle Farm on July 8.

He subsequently appealed to Queensland Racing's first level appeal board and while riding on a stay of proceedings won three Listed races, the Toowoomba and Grafton Cups before scoring on Jacqueline Rouge in last Saturday's Tattersall's Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Katsidis, who represented himself at Tuesday's appeal hearing, was delighted with the result.

"It's the first time I've ever won an appeal and I'm ecstatic," he said.

"It was 50-50 but I'm glad it went my way.

"I was always confident I could win the appeal as the interference only occurred because the leader stopped in its tracks in front of me that day."

Since resuming his troubled career on July 4, Katsidis has won 14 times from 47 mounts.

He was sidelined for 14 months with injuries and a drug-related disqualification before returning to the saddle for the Queensland Cup meeting at Eagle Farm.

Katsidis is now free to fulfil engagements at Doomben on Saturday which include Surf's Up and Hey Elvis for Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill.

Katsidis confirmed he had rejected an offer to ride fulltime for trainer Clarry Conners in Sydney but hasn't ruled out a move interstate in the future.

"Unless I get an offer from Gai Waterhouse or Darley I'll stay in Brisbane for the time being," he said.

"I had an offer from Clarry and I'll go down and ride for him and some of the other stables during the spring carnival but I'd like to stay in Brisbane for the time being.

"Eventually I'd like to go to Melbourne to ride but I'll be riding here in Brisbane for at least another season."

Monday, 14 September 2009: Comeback jockey Stathi Katsidis will link with the Gerald Ryan stable in two of the feature races at this week's Newcastle Cup carnival at Broadmeadow.

 by Racing and Sports

Ryan, who celebrated his first winning treble at a Sydney metropolitan meeting last Saturday at Rosehill, holds a big hand in Wednesday's feature races, the $150,000 Patinack Farm Cameron Handicap and the $175,000 MGA Insurance Brokers Spring Stakes.

Ahdashim, scratched from the Rosehill meeting last Saturday, will step up to Group company in the Cameron Handicap while classy prospect Hus Der Lieften will continue his classic preparation in the Spring Stakes.

Katsidis has made a great return to riding in Brisbane after a long lay-off. Riding for Ryan in the feature races at Newcastle could lead to some offers for the big spring races for the talented jockey.

Ryan's made a late decision to start Hus Der Lieften in the Group 3 Spring Stakes, a race that has a fine history of producing future Group One winners.

Since its first running in 1984 12 Spring Stakes winners have subsequently won Group One races while Melbourne Cup and Victoria Derby winners Subzero and Mahogany were minor placegetters.

Ryan intended to save Hus Der Lieften for the $250,000 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill on Saturday but changed his plans after looking over entries for the Spring Stakes.

Ryan had gone as far as withdrawing Hus Der Lieften's nomination for the Spring Stakes but fortunately decided to reinstated him when the entries were extended for the Newcastle race.

“When I thought I'd go to the Gloaming I took him out of the Newcastle race but when they extended the nominations I threw him back in,” Ryan said.

Hus Der Lieften was an excellent fourth behind top colts Denman and Trusting in the $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 29 when he was ridden by Corey Brown.

Brown is currently serving a whip suspension but holds a booking for the colt in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on October 3.

The Spring Stakes has drawn 14 acceptors including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Viking Legend (Blake Shinn), Euphemism (Kerrin McEvoy), No Respite (Nash Rawiller), Shadow Buster (Hugh Bowman), Chopped (Peter Robl) and Lovemelikearock (Glyn Schofield).

Lovemelikearock, one of three acceptors from the Anthony Cummings stable, is seeking to be the first filly to win the Spring Stakes since Lotteria in 2004.

Watch it again mate, he was perfectly placed sitting 5th one off the fence, then when the winner and 4th and a few others made their runs from the rear, Stathi missed the boat and got lost.
He ended up being pocketed before reefing it out when it was way too late.
He shoulda have taken off when the others did.
