SYDNEY PREPARING FOR NIGHT OF NIGHTS

Takeover Target - Ascot.jpgAustralia’s champion racehorse for the 2006/07 season will be crowned at the Australian Racing Industry’s night of nights, the Australian Racehorse of the Year and Hall of Fame Awards, next Monday 26 November at the AJC Pavilion at Royal Randwick.

Hosted by Racing NSW, Australian Jockey Club and Sydney Turf Club, the seventh Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be the first time the event has been held in Sydney.

In contention for the prestigious Australian Racehorse of the Year Award sponsored by Sky Channel are star gallopers Desert War, Haradasun, Miss Andretti, Miss Finland, Racing to Win and Takeover Target.

In addition, two jockeys, three horses, two trainers and one associate will be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. This year represents the second time the two celebrated national thoroughbred racing industry events have been combined.

Modern day champion jockeys Damien Oliver and Darren Beadman are among eight finalists in line for induction in the Racing in Australia Hall of Fame Jockey Category.

2007 Fred Hoysted Medal winner David Hayes, who trained more than 250 winners nationally last season, and leading Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse could join rivals Lee Freedman and John Hawkes as Longines Hall of Fame Trainers.

Both Hayes and Waterhouse are the children of inaugural inductees, Colin Hayes and Tommy Smith. Bart Cummings, Jack Denham and George Hanlon are the only other Hall of Fame members still training.

Chairman Bryan Martin said the Australian Racing Hall of Fame successfully covered the wide spectrum of the racing industry.

“Australian Racing Hall of Fame induction is the highest accolade that can be given to any member of the racing community. It has been described by people like the late Jim Houlahan, John Hawkes and Lee Freedman as the most prestigious honour bestowed on them,” Martin said.

For the first time one Hall of Fame inductee will also become the first to be named as a Tabcorp Australian Racing Hall of Fame Legend. The 30 finalists have been short-listed by an independent judging panel from more than 100 nominations across the four categories.

Howdy Westie,

Really, who ever is responsible for promoting these awards needs to extract the finger.  Once again, you follow the link from the RVL site that promises information on the finalists and you get taken to that hopeless Racing Museum site that contains NO information on the finalists....it doesn't even have a list of the finalists.

This happens every year.  I complain about it every year.  When are they going to get it through their thick heads that the promotion of the history and heritage of Australia racing is best served by generating interest in the awards in the lead up to the awards by simply furnishing profiles of the horses nominated.

Put the profiles out early and watch the racing forums ignite with discussion about the great horses of the past.  If they dont the awards are perceived as simply an inhouse slap up dinner for insiders that the general public are excluded from....which is exactly what they are.

Gai Waterhouse made it into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame last night and Miss Andretti named Australia's Horse of the Year.

Parts of these awards are jokes imo,it is Australian awards and even tho he won the MC Delta Blues isn't Australian so shouldn't have won the stayer award.
The best sprinter in the 12months was Gold Edition.
And if Gold Edition or Takeover Target weren't more popular  horses than Miss Andretti then I'll give up.
