Came across this fellow..was a 1.8 million Redoutes Choice (2nd dam gave up Encounter) and seemed to have good speed, winning 1st start well....then, as you would think for a $3300 sire with his bloodlines, pretty limited success from there on due to ongoing niggling injury (or so I'm told). He must have been some specimen, having regard to his price, and the fact that Tim Martin bought into him with the Sheik also indicates he must have been a pretty faultless horse... Is he as good as you'd get at that admittedly low service fee, (for a battler breeder) in terms of getting good Redoutes bloodline through a handsome correct fast son.? Thoughts anyone?

I do not pretend to be a genetic expert( and frankly I think anyone who does is full of it as it is proven to be the great unknown) but I think it all depends on what type of mare you are putting it to. His purchase price is completely irrelevant. As is the fact Tim Martin or the multi billionaire Sheik bougght into him. Both have bought some very ordinary horses. His type is only relevant to the type of mare you are putting him to. $3300 seems a good price for his pedigree. My uneducated advice s listen to Sunline's breeders. Find what your mare is missing and try and add it through your stallion regardless of who it is

A pure breed to race option, as commercially they'll be not worth the cost of production at a yearling sale.

thanks guys, DJH surely they wouldn't have gone to 1.8 million on pedigree. or chance....I don't think many make that sort of dosh with bad legs/conformation....even counting in Redoutes madness boom whatever I still reckon a purchase price is (somewhat) indicative as to type or looks or whatever ya wanna say. He would have been a magnificent type as they say. I'd be much more suss on a Redoutes son that sold below average or expectation. Just my thoughts, thanks for yours. Anyone out there with stud book access?...would love to know how many mares he served last year.

(0) | poxdoctor took the words out of my mouth. Not a "commercial" stallion and yearlings offered up for sale won't be seen on the main days of the major sales. This is not to say it could never change in future. Good luck with it SL, whatever you decide.

Thanks heaps for listing that PP7. He didn't attract many last year did he. A lot of these sub $5000 sires are really up against it... I wonder when we will see (near) free service from some of the studs to try to get a good book of mares (numbers wise) and hence have a slight chance of getting a 'performer'...seems like a very overloaded market to me with all sorts going to stud, and some with a very tenuous claim to having pedigree or any glimpse of performance. Having said that, I guess a stallion pays for his own feed pretty quickly even if a few turn up...but does he repay his purchase costs?

Newhaven sells $1.8M colt |
Story By Nathan Exelby
Tuesday, 29 March 2005: The big crowd at William Inglis’ Newmarket complex was silenced when Tim Stakemire bid $1.8million for a Redoute’s Choice-Saucy Nell (Marauding) colt on the opening day of the Australian Easter Yearling Sale today.
Redoute’s Choice was tipped to be the star of this sale and he has delivered in extraordinary style after earlier having progeny sold for $950,000 and $875,000.
But nothing could match the price paid for Lot 149, who is from a half-sister to former Champion two-year-old Encounter.
Stakemire bought the colt on behalf of Sheik Bin Khalifa al Maktoum, who had earlier bought Alinghi’s half-brother for $525,000.
The colt came through the draft of Newhaven Park Stud and is the second highest priced yearling ever sold in Australia, following the $2.2million paid for a Danehill-Prawn Cocktail colt last year.
Newhaven Park has been one of Australia's best breeding farms for a long time, with Champion juveniles Burst and Encounter among their best.
Redoute’s Choice had only cracked the seven figure barrier once before, when a half-brother to Reset (subsequently named Assertive Choice) was sold for $1.3million here last year.
The latest million dollar baby for the super sire is from Saucy Nell, who is a full sister to stakes placed Janole and half sister to Encounter (by Tierce).
He will be trained at Rosehill by Tim Martin
and so if ya believe in others judgement he must have been a good looker.....2nd most expensive colt ever sold at the time....this is why he is value IMHO

Have you looked at other comparable sons of RC?

thanks heaps for input guys...Governor its so hard feeling like you've made a goood choice at this level(ie sub $5000 sires). As noted above I have used the theory of going for the best bred and best animal I could find at this level...as indicated by sale price....as stated he was the 2nd most expensive colt ever sold in Oz at the time...and his pedigree did not drive that extraordinary price. I was after one who's ultimate race career went wrong and hence stuffed his residual value...hence bringing him into range(price wise) If this fella had placed in diamond, he would be $15k plus would he not? He is unlike many other bluebloods who end up with cheap price in that he showed a glimpse of adequate speed at his first start.... Any other Redoutes you can think of at $5000 or less that were decent lookers and actually made the track and showed some speed? My mares are a winning Shagny mare from family of Tierce, No Excuse Needed and American sire Cactus Ridge....also a non winning Afleetaffair mare from family of Oomph, Vinaka , Brackenbury (2nd dam was Jandell conquerer of Leilani once!)

bugger me, I open up "the winning post' and in an article about new sire Globetrotter (by Street Cry), i realise that my Afleetaffair mare is also closely related to Kilspindie (G3) and Rullene,Jullene etc as well as G1 winners Royal Magic, Confluence,Jeram New Village and Vinaka and Jandell herself. Shouldn't sell her short!
