Are they even going to try ?

I'd imagine they will go for races like the Toorak and the big mile on the last day.

'TOP Corowa galloper Leica Larrikin has been ruled out of the Melbourne and Caulfield cups with trainer Richard Freyer setting his sights on two of spring’s richest mile events in Melbourne and Sydney instead.
Leica Larrikin’s first group 1 attempt will be the $500,000 Epsom Hcp at Randwick on October 2, followed by $1 million Emirates Stakes in November.'

MATT CRAM

A MOUTH injury and lenient treatment from the handicapper have thrown a spanner in Corowa galloper Leica Larrikin’s group 1 Epsom Hcp campaign.
The Richard Freyer-trained gelding received 52kg for the $500,000 Epsom Hcp (1600m), to be held at Randwick on October 2, putting him equal-34th in the order of entry for the race.

To help his chances of making the final field, the Freyer stable was toying with the idea of racing Leica Larrikin in the group 2 $175,000 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

However, a mouth boil has ended that plan and forced the five-year-old onto medication.

“He’s gone and got a boil under his lip which has required antibiotics so he’s a very doubtful starter in the Shannon,” Rick Freyer said yesterday.

“It’s not affecting his working or his eating, it’s just a real nuisance at this stage.”

But the stable remains upbeat at Leica Larrikin’s chances of making the Epsom Hcp’s final field after heavy weights to the top chances put several runners in doubt.

Those in doubt include the Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite More Joyous and 2008 winner Theseo.

“By my calculations there could be 14 or 16 (entrants higher in the ballot order) that won’t run so we’re still fairly confident of getting a place,” Rick Freyer said.

“It’s his first group 1 so he was always going to get around that weight.”

Leica Larrikin was last night a $26 chance for the Epsom Hcp, remaining steady in betting after running a hampered fifth in the group 3 Bobbie Lewis Hcp at Flemington two weeks ago.

As well as the Epsom, the top Border galloper has also been earmarked to tackle the $1 million Emirates Stakes on the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.
