Yet another jockey is rushed to a metropolitan hospital after a fall during a race.  Clinton Payne from racenet.com.au reports that Jockey Darryl Johnston has been airlifted to a Brisbane hospital after a serious fall at Rockhampton on yesterday.

Johnston aboard Easy Harmony and former Sydney based apprentice William Morris on The Noss both fell in the Hahn Premium Maiden Plate over 1300m near the 1100 metres.

“I’m not aware of the extent of the injuries to either rider but I can tell you Darryl Johnston has been airlifted to Brisbane for further testing,” Rockhampton Senior Steward Paul Gillard said.

“All I know is his injuries are of a serious nature.”

Stewards opened an inquiry into the fall and took initial evidence from other riders but have adjourned it to a date to be fixed.

I'm sure that the caller reported (on RadioTAB) that The Noss had gone through the rail after breaking a leg and was subsequently put down. He did not know the condition of Easy Harmony.

It is really upsetting to see and hear of these falls. Hope now that both jockeys will be OK.

Tiny piece in The Courier-Mail today says he underwent emergency surgery. He broke vertebrae in the fall and his family is hopeful he will walk again.

Well, so too do I hope he walks again.  In fact, not only walks but rides and is able to live a full and fruitful life.

I think there have been about 4 falls in the last 3 or 4 days and it's not a trend I would like to see continued.  sad

An article in todays Adelaide Advertiser about Darryl Johnstons'injuries. The C3 & C4 vertebrae were crushed & separated from each other. He also sustained a broken pelvis & a broken left forearm. He has been told by the doctors that he will never walk again, but he seems to think different & intends to approach it with a positive attitude. Good on him, I wish him well with his recovery.

Good to hear that he is remaining positive.  After all, look at where Bev Buckingham is today after being told that she would never walk again - training in Victoria and walking around and doing all the things that trainers can and must do!!

Let's just hope that the doctors have given him the worst case scenario in order not to raise his hopes and they can be shown to be wrong.
