ridden by the imperious Lester Piggott.

HIGHCLERE
1974 1,000 Guineas
Joe Mercer - Dick Hern
A good work horse at home Highclere was highly strung with plenty of fire in
her and Dick Hern always credited her lass, Betty Brister, for much of her
success because she was not an easy horse to look after.
DUNFERMLINE
1977 Oaks
Willie Carson - Dick Hern
In Silver Jubilee year the Queen’s best filly Dunfermline proved herself a
dour stayer. As a two year-old she tended to stick her head in the air and
there were suggestions that she should wear blinkers.
DUNFERMLINE
1977 St Leger
Willie Carson - Dick Hern
In one of the great St Legers the Queen’s filly outstayed dual Arc de Triomphe
winner Alleged after they had gone a rattling good gallop. She stayed in
training at four but was slightly disappointing.
