RANDWICK ON SATURDAY: WHY ARE WE PAYING $70,000 FOR BENCHMARK '80' RACES?

I would expect that many of the horses racing at Randwick on Saturday would be willingly sold for a price well below the prizemoney on offer for winning.

Why is money contributed by TAB punters being wasted in this way?

No doubt, on Saturday, NSW punters will be betting mostly on the first class races run in Melbourne -- and to add insult to this injury, the levy that RacingNSW should be paying to RacingVictoria will be covered by Tabcorp as a consequence of a (dirty?) deal.

There is something not right about all this -- especially in NSW.

What sort of a 'crowd' is likely to attend Randwick racetrack on Saturday -- what impression will a 'crowd' of that size make on the sense of spending $125 m on a new set of 'race viewing facilities' at Randwick.

Is there any commonsense in play in this game?

Pete, could possibly stop posting your thread titles in CAPS, please, it is seen as shouting amongst the online masses, and detracts from the other threads that have to abide by the same rules wink

Cheers

While I agree with you ol' Pete, surely the same can be said for the Moonee Valley meeting on the 27th.  Or does off season prize money only rankle you when it is being done in NSW?

Magic, I reckon these blokes that use the blue font should be stopped also.

Maybe they just want to be different but I can assure them that they are strange enough without this blue thingo. lol

On Saturday nights on the Cushion, there'd be occasional fields when the total value of the runners might not exceed the prizemoney.

And my nag is among them. lol

Yet another "constructive criticism" of racing in the state of NSW by Peter.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a reply to your perfectly valid question M. The enemies of NSW racing have this strange way of coming up with criticisms which could be applied to other states, but never are. They would make poor poker players.

Suggestions I can recall from Peter in the past:

- Introduction of "Hong Kong style" racing in Sydney - whatever the hell that is.
- Closure of all NSW country tracks.
- Cessation of racing in NSW.

I rather have them pay $70,000 for Benchmark 80 race than $3.5m for bunch of green two year olds.

RacingNSW -- LOST AND FAR FROM HOME

A presumably correct report of what was said, about too much low-grade racing in Sydney, cannot hide the reality of a state racing industry unable to present racing of reasonable quality.  Consider the absence of commonsense in the following remarks reported this morning in an outlet usually 'supportive' of RacingNSW and then ask why Tabcorp is apparently dictating what happens in NSW -- one can only wonder about what happens next, as the funding crisis hits home.

How Sydney racing plans to match Melbourne ..............SYDNEY may race on Sundays during the Melbourne spring carnival in a bold move aimed at trying to revive worrying field sizes. Two days after 46 horses went around in a forgettable Randwick program, Racing NSW said moving metropolitan racing back a day could be one option to explore.

This week will again feature racing at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, Hawkesbury on Thursday, Canterbury on Friday, Rosehill and Kembla on Saturday and Newcastle on Sunday............under the current arrangement with Tabcorp, 123 metropolitan meetings and 127 provincial meetings needed to be held each year.

Sydney Turf Club racing manager ........... was adamant there were just too many race meetings in NSW.  "If we race on a Sunday it would help turnover, ...........but that still doesn't address the real problem of too many race meetings.

Peter V'landy is thinking about having Sydney racing on a Sunday during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Hopefully he doesn't have absolute power like Bob Bentley does in Queensland. His idea is that Sydney racing will improve if the races are held on Sunday because the best jockeys and trainers will be available.

This will not overcome last Saturday's fiasco -it's about the horses Peter. No point in having the best jockeys available if there are no horses to ride . The trainers will certainly not turn up if they don't have any starters.

Apparently the Sunday idea comes from the Turnbull Stakes day. Surely he must remember that weekend. The AFL final (repeat) on Saturday and the NRL final on the Sunday. Now most punters are male and most punters follow either code or both codes. So I envisage it was a very big couple of days for most punters. I don't think those two days can be replicated every weekend for 6 weeks in a row.

Also again about the horses the Turnbull Stakes field had Shootout, Shocking, Typhoon Tracy and about 7 over Group 1 starters in it.On Saturday was the Epsom and numerous other Group ! races.

No Peter just cut down on the number of races and barrier trials you have in Sydney and accept that it's all about Melbourne at that time of the year.

How about Peter concentrate on attracting punters to the track so they can bet with the interstate bookies on the Melbourne races.
Of course that only works if there is at least some semblance of a local product to watch as well - not the disgrace that was last Saturday.

How this idiot still remains in an important job is one of life's great mysteries.

I have actually given up on Sydney racing. The field sizes are abysmal, there is no value and the racing is generally predictable.

I find Brisbane offers much more with its bigger field sizes these days.
