Wheeler's Super Seven For Melbourne Cup Written by: Gerard Guthrie

Paul Wheeler’s domination of the Group racing scene is poised to continue at Sandown Park on Thursday night with Australia’s most successful breeder having a stranglehold on the Group 1 Solo Melbourne Cup.
Wheeler, who’s based between Boorowa and Young in the South West Slopes of NSW, remarkably owns seven finalists in the $200,000 to-the-winner Melbourne Cup, the second richest race in the land.
Wheeler won seven of last Thursday night’s eight Cup heats, with Andrea Dailly preparing four winners – boom youngster Bekim Bale (29.28s), Dyna Tron (29.31s), Bala Bale (29.38s) and Dyna Morris (29.65s) – while the legendary Graeme Bate trained the remaining three in Allen Elroy (29.36s), Shereen Bale (29.37s) and Numero Uno Bale (29.56s).
Bate and Wheeler combined to win the 1999 Melbourne Cup with kanarn Bale, one of the champion mentor’s three victories in the great race.
The lone non-Wheeler Cup finalist is Gary Ennis’ Enry Walt, which claimed his heat in 29.41s.
The box draw for the Melbourne Cup, which was conducted on Monday morning, is: 1. Shereen Bale, 2. Numero Uno Bale, 3. Enry Walt, 4. Bekim Bale, 5. Bala Bale, 6. Allen Elroy, 7. Dyna Tron, 8. Dyna Morris.
There was further joy for the Wheeler family at Cannington on Saturday night when Paul’s son Brendan won two heats of the Group 3 Young Stars Classic with litter mates Dyna Iceman and Dyna Hackett.
Both were impressive at their Cannington debuts, but will have their work cut out in this Saturday night’s final where they’ll come up against brilliant Western Australian bitch Miata, the track record holder.
Thursday night’s keenly anticipated Sandown meeting will also see the running of the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup for the stayers.
Two heats of the $75,000 to-the-winner Bold Trease were held last Thursday night, and it was very much a family affair with litter brothers Granduer (41.84s), trained by Len Ketelaar, and Echelon (42.03s), trained by Craig Treherne, successful.
NSW will be well represented in the Bold Trease decider, courtesy of litter brothers Zipping Lad and Zipping Malfoy, veteran Slick Lee, and Ebby Miss.
The box draw for the Bold Trease Carnival Cup is: 1. Bling It On, 2. Ebby Miss, 3. Echelon, 4. Zipping Malfoy, 5. Granduer, 6. Slick Lee, 7. Zipping Lad, 8. Robert Andrew.
