QUEENSLAND’S leading stud farm, Glenlogan Park, have won
the race to stand the superbly bred, boom galloper Rothesay - a horse
Gerald Ryan declares as potentially the best he has ever trained.
Rothesay, a son of Fastnet Rock and out of a Woodman daughter of Canny
Lad’s full sister Canny Lass, won four of his nine career starts
including the Group 2 BRC Queensland Guineas, Group 3 Lord Mayor's Cup
and was runner-up to More Joyous in the Group 2 STC Sebring Stakes at
Rosehill.
Ryan
has trained several outstanding racehorses who went on to become
successful sires, including Snitzel and Hurricane Sky, and believes
Rothesay
(pictured www.stevehart.com.au) has all the ingredients needed to make the transition from the racetrack to the breeding barn.
"Rothesay was a lot nicer individual than both of those horses mentioned
and I do believe he also had more ability,” Ryan said in what can only
be interpreted as a tremendous push for Glenlogan Park’s newest
addition.
"There is no question he had the potential to be the best horse I have
ever trained and his scope as far as future racetrack performances to
come was enormous.
“He has a terrific frame, is very athletic, a great attitude and he was a very sound horse conformationally.
“I am sure he has everything it takes to make a really top-class sire and he should leave very professional looking yearlings.
“If they possess even half of his raw ability than he is a certainty to be a serious stallion.”
Rothesay was bred and raced in partnership by (the late) Sue Suduk and
Michael Ryan, whose affairs are managed by prominent bloodstock agent
Philippa Duncan.
``I'll always think that there was unfinished business with Rothesay,”
Duncan said. “He was such an excitement machine and had so much more to
offer on the racetrack.
“However circumstances have dictated he will now be sent to stud and we
are delighted that he is going to Glenlogan - where he will get a
second-to-none chance to make an impact as a sire.”
Glenlogan Park principal Jon Haseler is obviously delighted to have secured such an exciting and outstanding prospect.
“Rothesay, at the fee we will be able to offer him, is one of those
stallions that becomes available to breeders only very, very rarely,”
Haseler said. “A true Group One quality sprinter/miler, by a sire that
is taking all before him and out of a proven stallion producing female
family makes Rothesay an exceptionally attractive prospect.
“Our goal at Glenlogan Park is to present the industry with sires that
are capable of reaching the very top of the national stallion’s tables,
offer great commercial appeal to buyers throughout Australia and have
all of the ingredients required to upgrade mares pedigrees and produce
racehorses of the highest calibre.
“In Rothesay, I am sure that objective has been well and truly achieved!
“He was one of the standout colts of his generation, had a tremendous turn of foot and is a magnificent animal to look at.
“When
you couple these factors with his depth of pedigree and the
opportunities that he will be given here in the breeding barn, then it
is very easy to understand why we consider him such an exciting and
important addition to our stallion ranks.”
Glenlogan Park’s Manager, Steve Morley, is equally thrilled to have the
imposing son of Fastnet Rock joining their sire roster for next season.
“I truly can’t wait for breeders to lay eyes on this horse,” Morley
said. “The moment he walks out of the box his class and presence is
almost overwhelming.
“He has terrific bone, great substance, wonderful depth, incredible muscle mass and is a fantastic mover.
“I am obviously excited to be promoting a horse of his quality and
credentials, as he possesses everything we look for in a stallion
prospect. There are plenty of very good form judges who consider
Rothesay to be the best son of Fastnet Rock
(pictured) that we have seen so far – and I certainly agree with them!
“He has all the strength and physical conformation to leave youngsters
that buyers will clamber for - he truly is a real athlete!
“Breeders will need to look long and hard next season to try and find a
stallion that will match his commercial appeal or potential for return
on their investment and, in fact, I don’t think they will find one.
“There would not be a buyer in Australia who wouldn’t respect the raw
galloping ability of Rothesay and I am sure this will be evident once
his youngsters hit the sales rings in the years to come.
“This horse is truly the complete package and he will be very, very popular.
“Seldom do studs get the chance to stand a stallion that could demolish
their opponents in the blink of an eye like Rothesay could.
“He is a very exciting addition to Glenlogan, Queensland and, in fact, the entire Australian breeding industry.”
Rothesay’s service fee for his first season in the breeding shed has
been set at $11,000 plus GST and there will be a small number of shares
available to selected breeders.
