New to the punt and trying to understand the ranking of the gradings/classifications of races in Aus..  what what

I understand Group 1 is the best followed by G2 and G3 but what happens from there?? Any info to find any helpful websites that provide info on this topic would be great.

This stuff is handled by Australian Racing Board, through the "Pattern Committee".

I haven't looked for a specific link, but I expect you'll find something if you look around the ARB site.

Just trying to get my head around diff between BM-70 v 72 v 80 etc and whether the grading is the same at different tracks in NSW & other states !!!

Steve, those benchmarks relate to the handicapper's rating of horses.  They're likely to be different in every State.

From what I know on this - and that's not a lot - horses with the benchmark rating will carry a set weight of 58 kg.  Those above and below will be penalised or receive an allowance at the rate of 1 kg for every 2 points.  F and M get an additional 1.5 kg from memory.
