More Joyous opens favourite for the Doncaster Mile

Glamour mare More Joyous has been set as favourite in TAB Sportsbet’s opening market for the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
More Joyous, seen here winning the George Main Stakes, will be aiming to win another feature mile at Randwick (www.sportpix.com.au)

The Gai-Waterhouse trained mare, who has won 10 of her 14 starts, has opened at $7.

She is unbeaten at Randwick from 3 starts and is also yet to taste defeat at 1600m.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou is the only other runner under double figures, opening as a $9 second favourite.

Whobegotyou is arguably a miler, having only been beaten once at 1600m.

That was in the 2009 Doncaster, where he finished a very unlucky 3rd behind Vision and Power.

Three horses are on the third line of betting – world champion sprinter Black Caviar, who is highly unlikely to tackle the race; last year’s winner Rangirangdoo; and last year’s favourite Typhoon Tracy.

The highest rated three year old is Kiwi filly We Can Say It Now, who at her last start won the Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at weight for age by four lengths.

She is on the fifth line of betting at $21.

The time-honoured Doncaster Mile received 222 nominations when entries closed on Tuesday.

What is her rating ?

Surely she did not earn a high rating for beating up on the likes of Mandela and company ?

Highest rated in the market Matt.

But even still, come on. It's not always about who you beat, but the manner of your victories as well.

Is Makybe Diva rated any less of a Melbourne Cup champion because in the three years she won, she beat into 2nd She's Archie (who was pulled up the following year), Vinnie Roe (who ran 4th and 8th at his other attempts) and On a Jeune (ran 11th, 20th and 6th from his other three attempts)?

Look at who Anacheeva beat in the Guineas...Run for Levi.

Please...at least We Can Say It Now beat the older horses.

She beat older slow coaches by group 1 standards. I hope she is as good as you suggest but the form from that race will not stack up.

I doubt Anacheeva's Caulfield Guineas has had a chance to be proven or disproven it may well prove to be poor form. Unfortunately We Can Say it Nows WFA win was against fully established slow coaches by  group 1 standard.

Mandela would not be in the market of a Doncaster if he recieved 5 kilo's less than the limit weight.

Jimmy Choux to target Doncaster Mile

New Zealand’s best three year old male, Jimmy Choux, is on track to complete a rare double this autumn.

Trainer John Bary told New Zealand media outlets yesterday that despite stamina worries over his star, Jimmy Choux will run in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) on March 5.

However, Bary has confirmed to Just Horse Racing that a Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) start is a likelihood.

“Jimmy Choux will be aimed at the Doncaster if he gets through the [New Zealand] Derby safely,” Bary said.

The Thorn Park colt has stamped himself as New Zealand’s best three year old male after dominant wins in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m), the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m) and the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m).

He has built an imposing record with seven wins and five minor placings from 14 starts.

A tough, genuine horse, his only failure came when he suffered cardiac arrythmia in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m), won by boom filly We Can Say It Now.

Jimmy Choux is currently a $4 equal favourite for the New Zealand Derby with NZ TAB and a $35 chance for the Doncaster Mile with TAB Sportsbet.

I don't think Jimmy Choux will stay 2400m, hence I'm not sure if we'll see him over here.

Three-year-olds backed to win Doncaster
Brad Waters
Monday, 28 February 2011

Sportingbet Australia has incurred big liabilities on a pair of promising three-year-olds in the latest betting on the Group I Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick.

The Brett Partelle-trained Torio’s Quest and the Group II Hobartville Stakes winner Ilovethiscity have had plenty of support in recent betting on the famous Randwick mile.

Sportingbet Australia chief executive Michael Sullivan said the wave of support for Torio’s Quest has forced the corporate bookmaker to trim his quote by more than half.

“We took one bet of $300,000 to $5000 each way, plus there have been other punters back him to win $30,000 and $20,000,” Sullivan said.

“His win in the Magic Millions was outstanding after getting back from a terrible draw and making tremendous ground on a track that suited the front runners.

“That win certainly gave every indication the step up to the mile would suit and he looks to be one of a number of three-year-olds with a genuine chance in the Doncaster.”

Ilovethiscity’s strong win in the Hobartville Stakes has prompted Sportingbet Australia to tighten the Grahame Begg-trained colt’s Doncaster price from $41 into $18.

“There had been some good money for Ilovethiscity to win the Doncaster before the weekend at $41 and the money has kept coming since then too,” Sullivan said.

Sportingbet Australia has the Gai Waterhouse-trained mare More Joyous as a $4 favourite to win the Doncaster Mile ahead of Whobegotyou at $8.

From a Doncaster point of View Centenial Park's run was about as good as it gets at WFA for a horse that is probably better off in a handicap

The different and higher pressure of a handicap will find him out at a mile. The same thing that will bring about down fall of the great one this Saturday.

I do understand the difference but he will drop in weight and I can see no evidence to suggest he won't run the mile out

I haven't followed his horses closely but when I did I always felt his horses ran well early then tailed off a bit into the prep.
