Please note the point scoring rules. Might pay to consider value on the odds when tipping.

Point Scoring - Tipping
Stat Description Points Awarded
Correct TipThe number of points awarded will be equal to the dollar value of the final TAB Sportsbet fixed odds price at kick off. E.g. if the team selected was priced at $2.45, the Player would receive 2.45 points
Incorrect Tip0 Points
Drawn MatchThe number of points awarded to all Players will be equal to the dollar value of the final TAB Sportsbet fixed odds price at kick off of the lower price team. E.g. if the two teams were priced at $1.50 and $1.80 respectively, the Player would receive 1.50 points
Bonus for correctly tipping ALL winners in a Tipping Week 5 Points
Non-submission of tips for any given match or Tipping Week The number of points awarded will be equal to the dollar value of the final TAB Sportsbet fixed odds price at kick off for the lower price team for each match where tips are not submitted, capped at a maximum of 7 points per Tipping Week
Correct Margin Bonus There is no points bonus for correctly picking the Margin. The Margin is only relevant in the event of a tie-breaker
Non-submission of Margin Prediction The average Margin Score for the Tipping Week amongst all other Players will be awarded (the "Average Margin Score"). The average is based on all Margin Scores recorded from all Players in that Tipping Week
Late Entry during Regular Season The number of points awarded will be equal to the dollar value of the final TAB Sportsbet fixed odds price at kick off for the lower price team for Tipping Week missed by the Player, capped at a maximum of 7 points per Tipping Week. The Player will be awarded the Average Margin Score for each previously completed Tipping Week before the Player completed the Registration Process.
How we use your Margin Prediction The Margin Prediction is used as a tie-breaker, should more than one entry be ranked equally based on Correct Tips. The cumulative Margin Score for a participant is the total of all Margin Scores awarded for all completed Rounds to date. The lowest Margin Score and Cumulative Margin Score is ranked highest. Ranking of participants from the last Round completed will appear on this website.

In short, if you tip a winner you are given the same amount of points as if you had a $1 bet on Fixed Odds - sort of appropriate for a Racing Forum, don't you think?

Mate there are a lot of entries in the comp where their tipping name doesn't match their Forum nic. By "identifying yourself", I mean identifying what name you are using in the tipping comp.

I'm hopeless at the NRL tipping and even more so at this AFL, so relying mainly on luck.

My experience grats - AFL far more predictable results than NRL.

I think the NRL salary cap may have something to do with that. Seems to be a bigger disparity in class in the AFL i.e. Geelong, St. Kilda, etc. have far better cattle than (say) The Tigers. In the NRL, not such a big gap between first and last, as we saw last night.

PP not saying your theory is wrong but why would the salary cap in the NRL

would make it less predictable then the AFL which has a salary cap and a draft?

The draft and travel is the reason AFL is more predictable. It takes time for a bad team to draft enough good players to move up, where as in RL they can buy players from England or other clubs. It also means club have less depth and they cant stockpile talent. The difference between player  15 on the list and player 25 is enormous so a few injuries make predicting results easy.

Travel is the other reason. Travelling after all the running is tough on the body and recovery. The two Perth teams dont lose many at home and dont win many on the road. Sides that have the long travel often struggle the next week.

All those little thing mean it is easier to average a game or 2 extra a week in the AFL over NRL.
