Stewards queried Hickmott over Mourilyan's run and accepted the explanations...............he has to race like that in future...............if he doesn't burst a blood vessel. shocked

Trainer Mr R Hickmott was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Mourayan (IRE) today given that it led easily in the early and middle stages and was then put under pressure from the 600m.  Mr Hickmott explained that D Nikolic was carrying out his instructions as it is the stable’s opinion that Mourayan (IRE) performs best when ridden this way.  He added that Mourayan (IRE) was previously trained in the UK and is accustomed to this style of racing and subsequent training and was ridden in a similar manner in last years AJC Metropolitan (placed 2) and will continue to be ridden this way in the future.  Mr Hickmott was advised that his explanation given today would be noted and has been recorded if required for further reference and that the stable be mindful that all horses be ridden in a manner that they are given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing in the field.

Tactics  helped Linton run second but Shocking which was too good. thumbsup

They've pushed forward four times on that horse before and LW has said more than once that they thought it was the way to go.

So for stewards to inquire about it is a bit of a laugh.

And if they didn't think he was given every chance to win I'd love to know why they didn't ask the same questions after last weeks Aust Guineas the the two leaders rode the most poorly judged rides you'll see in a G1 race.

It is about pacifying punters by asking questions, has nothing to do with actually doing their job, exercise in futility, it happened a few years ago when Doc Chapman had 2 in the AJC Derby and the fav was Stylish Century(a leader) Doc had Dr Grace and the stablemate(can't remember it's name) the stablemate went with Stylish Century and allowed Dr Grace to win the race, Doc Chapman started a few runs earlier to send the stablemate to the lead to set it up so as the stewards couldn't question the tactics when he used them in the Derby, it worked biggrin

Wasn't Myocard as Myocard won his Derby too, Myocard won his Derby in 1987 then ran second in the Sydney Cup to Major Drive, he also beat Bonecrusher and Our Waverly Star in the BMW, Doctor Grace won the 1990 Derby, I think the horse that pushed Stylish Prince might have been Imprimatur but not sure

I think it was Imprimatur  who rolled off the fence letting his stablemate Myocard stroll though a saloon passage

Think most people know that's just the way he races - we mentioned it in our form summary

7-MOURAYAN is a bit of an up and down stayer of the Williams stable who can be a little hard to follow. Struggled for form early last spring, then put in a great run in the Metropolitan in Sydney. Has a funny habit of sometimes taking off mid race and there is a good chance he will sit handy and roll forward at some stage and put the pressure on. Fitter for the 2 runs in, but hard to read form from the 5 horse race last week and you would think he is going struggle at this level at WFA. No

Guess they had to ask the question though - it did look a little unusual.
