New Chairman for RacingNSW -- why is the Minister not calling any changing of the guard here?

This is a question that one might expect John Messara to be pondering tonight.

The rest of us are pondering this nonsense:

Alan Brown has announced he is stepping down as chairman of Racing NSW.

Alan Bell has been appointed Racing NSW Chairman following the resignation of Alan Brown on Tuesday.

The board of Racing NSW unanimously resolved to appoint Alan Bell as chairman with Brown as deputy chairman.

Brown will stay on as the Deputy Chairman.

Who is running this show!

Cop this:

Bell said it was an honour to be appointed chairman.

"At Racing NSW we focus on maximising returns for everyone who participates commercially in racing, and on ensuring everyone in NSW continues to enjoy following the races," he said.

"We are determined to ensure a prosperous racing future for all."

[Presumably the relevant focus is the 'commercial participants' -- and, unsaid, 'stuff the punters' for whom we are grateful for kicking the tin but otherwise we make little real effort to ensure they get a fair go in terms of TAB takeouts and more general protections from exploitation by 'commercial participants'.]

Na, he must have done something seriously wrong.

I have read that he knocked back positions of importance because he did not get the head honchos job.

He is closely aligned with Alan Jones, they are basically one and the same, so that might scare the shit out of people it certainly does not impress me.

I just wish Racing Bitch told us why he is so  unliked be the racing masses. All we will get is speculation. Kenny Callander tells us he does not like the conflict of interest like that is really the problem. We all know Ken Callander, Messara and Jones are mortal enimies so when reading him we are not getting a balanced argument.

Alan Bell was probably the best man for the job. On face value he does not have any conflict of interest and know quite abit about most factors of the industry.

Quite simply it is a very rare person who has a passion for the industry/sport that would not have some sort of conflict, its just a matter of degree.

It is clear that a fix was on  -- as soon as the state government changed hands.

I have had a bit to do with observing others managing the composition of 'independent' boards and was long ago wide awake to this possibility -- but remain incredulous that the stunt was pulled as blatantly as it was.

Looking back it is now more obvious why the existing RNSW board contrived a cosmetic change of chairman without the new Minister saying anything: that board was obviously wary of, and taking objection to, what has come to pass and the new minister had his own agenda.

Similarly, given the outcome, it is clear enough that the decision to replace the then current board -- stressing the avoidance of conflicts of interest -- was also somewhat contrived -- especially given the general opinion that the new chairman especially, and some other new-board members, are hardly independent of the culture currently dominating RacingNSW.

The problem for all involved -- the new chairman, the new minister, the old minister and, especially, RacingNSW -- is that the new board has to be seen to work, and to work some magic: I do not believe it can or will.

All this contrived nonsense aside, if the Messiah had ever had something useful to offer he should have offered it long ago -- it is dog-in-the-manger stuff for him to to say, implicitly, that "I will only say where the magic-bone is buried when I am the top dog".

The losers in all this include everyone in NSW that remembers when racing in NSW was at least as good as in Victoria -- and that memory is fast fading into an unrecoverable oblivion.

I suspect the biggest loser will be the Messiah himself -- given what he has said publicly this week, having kicked and clawed to get the high chair, he will be unable to do anything useful while he is flanked by politicians of both stripes determined to pander to the racing vote while watching racing in NSW slide into oblivion.

Show us the money -- and the magic bone.

Hmm,  I am not going to argue anything else you have written, but I do want to address this.  What you say has definitely been true for the last 15 years or so, but I think things are taking a turn for the worse in Victoria.  What has made Victorian racing the strongest in Australia (apart from being the most subsidised by the State Government) has been the all open races on Saturdays policy, with the odd restricted race here and there when there is a excess of meetings, usually around Public Holidays.  Over the past 3 or 4 years, there has become an insidious creeping of restricted races onto Saturdays, particularly at this time of year.  Robbie Griffith mentioned yesterday that he backed up one of his horses yesterday because there wasn't another 1400 open race for a few weeks.  1400m opens have been a staple of Melbourne Saturdays for a few years now, so if there isn't any for a few weeks that indicates, to me at least, they have lost their way a little bit.  I don't know if the idea is to try and boost up the numbers/quality for the night meetings at the Valley, but Sydney has felt, if not stronger, then at least holding it's own the last few weeks.  Things will probably get back to normal once we get into the New Year, but it seems troubling to me that Racing Victoria don't actually know why they have been so successful.  My guess is that they are a lot less competent than we would like to think.

Fair comment Manikato -- I agree that the 'off season' Melbourne racing is low grade.

A time for sober reflection -- as this thread draws to a close

On 11 October a posting on the main RTA thread -- RacingNSW -- Spoils for the Victors and their mates-- was quickly editorially 'buried' under 'bits and pieces' in the subordinate 'NSW Gallops' heading. The text of that same posting was then 'editorially' removed from a 'Google alerts' message relating to RacingNSW.

On reflection that 11 October posting was right on the money -- it said in part:

RacingNSW -- Spoils for the Victors and their mates

Predictably enough the new government in NSW has its own ideas about the independence of the board of RacingNSW -- some scores are about to be settled.

Ahead of applications being invited, NSW insiders are no doubt speculating about the selection of a new board following a process which again looks like a thinly disguised veil for the Minister appointing who he wants.

By 28 October the plot had apparently sickened: the posting -- RNSW brinksmanship: the scene could well be set for a bit of a mess  -- said in part:

Not only did the 'quotes of the week' [in a DT story] repeat the minister's endorsement of candidates with a racing industry background (bar those on racing club boards or associations in the last 12 months) but the lead story read like extracts from someones application for a seat: the importance of better balancing both 'owner costs with prizemoney recouped' and 'broad funding support (for country racing) with excellence (metropolitan racing) all sugared with open praise for the minister personally.

If there is another first-coming around Xmas time no one will be surprised.

The point of this reflection is mainly about the blatant predictability of what has come to pass with the board of RacingNSW but it is also partly about the influences which can apparently be brought to bear on editors to reduce the risk that unwanted comment will be widely read.

One would like to think that the right to open comment Australia was better protected from such interference.
