Have a lovely colt/filly coming in 10 weeks or so, (hopefully) and was really wanting to be sure I don't miss the birth.
We had a lovely Moon Rocket colt dead on the ground due to suffocation (bag didn't break, maiden mare stuffed and went to sleep, we were
15 minutes late) last time, so don't want a repeat.
We want our grandson or daughter of Redoutes Choice to be a live one.
So, was wondering if any of you have had any experience with these predictor kits that monitor calcium levels in mares milk, and supposedly give you a 24 hr window (you test every day or two and the colours change on a strip etc) as to when foal is coming.
The science seems sound, but it seems studs stick with alarms and hope the mare lies down etc
Should we use both?

I used the magic breed foal alarms for a number of years and found them pretty good, although you should test them thoroughly before each season.I've sent the alarms back for service and they've come back working fine. I'd always check mares who have waxed up each night before going to bed, looking for signs of an imminent foaling. I missed one or two over the years with no bad result fortunately

To be honest the only 100% guaranteed method is to watch your mare 24/7 and if you're doing it yourself that's not an option. The more options you can take to cover yourself the better.

If I was in your situation, I guess I'd pay someone to do the nightwatch for a week. Can't see what would be better than a person watching.  beer

Dunno that I'd trust anyone not to 'nod off'!
Now if I can just find me some of them pills the fighter pilots take......

Hi
I use a combination of both for home -the Foal watch prediction kit from Edward's instruments - very accurate with all my mares -maidens are hard to get any milk out of so might not work for them

the alarm I use is the Ausmin foaling alarm - has many features - delay - mobile phone settings etc -much better than Magic breed in my opinion

I have worked as a foaling attendant at some big studs in SE qld so I have trialed all brands (out of interest) on various mares the above 2 are the best I have found
used in combination together I have not missed one foaling at home out of 14 mares

Hmmm...after all the angst, my maiden mare sheds not one millilitre of milk before giving us a beautiful happy healthy filly on day 340 just like the textbooks said.
The horse gods, at last, have smiled on us.
Born at 4am and had met dogs ponies etc by the time we rushed to meet and hug her and mum at sunrise.

I will never again ignore the slight flattening on the rump and droop of the vulva which occurred only the day before birth!
Phew ya gotta watch em.
I cried the same way as when I saw my kids...got away with it! what is it about foals? they have my heart.
