Cape blanco wins man o'war stakes in us

Cape Blanco

Treasure and Roderic entered for Chicago card

USA: Aidan O'Brien, set to saddle the Arlington Million favourite in CapeBlanco, could be represented by as many as three Irish Classic winners in Chicago next weekend.

The Ballydoyle trainer is eyeing the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes with Roderic O'Connor and Treasure Beach, winners respectively of this year's Irish Guineas and Derby.

O'Brien, who took the Million in 2005 with Powerscourt, landed the Secretariat five years earlier with Ciro.

Speaking at The Curragh on Sunday, O'Brien suggested Treasure Beach was the more probable runner of the pair, with Colm O'Donoghue set to retain the ride.

A total of ten horses have been engaged in the Arlington Million, where Cape Blanco is 2-1 favourite with bookmakers Blue Square ahead of 3-1 shot Gio Ponti, the dual US turf champ whom he beat decisively last month in the Man o'War at Belmont.

Gio Ponti, who won the Million in 2009, was beaten into second at odds on last year by the John Gosden-trained Debussy.

British contender Wigmore Hall, the mount of Hayley Turner, is rated a 7-1 chance by Blue Square.

Although the Secretariat Stakes is usually the weakest of the three Grade 1 events at Arlington's signature event, this year's race is coming up stronger than usual - even if both Ballydoyle horses don't cross the Atlantic.

Twelve initial entries for the $400,000 event also include the Aga Khan's Ziyarid, a Group 3 winner at Longchamp on his most recent start, plus three of America's best turf three-year-olds in the Virginia Derby one-two Air Support and Banned, plus Willcox Inn.

The last-named has already won the Arlington Classic and the Grade 2 American Derby at the Chicago track, putting him in line for a clean sweep of the Mid-America Triple.

Entries for the $750,000 Beverly D include Dubai Duty Free runner-up River Jetez and multiple Group 1 winner Stacelita, who will be making her debut for US-based trainer Chad Brown.

Gerard Butler's Chicago-based string will be represented by Pachattack, a Grade 3 winner over 1m1f at Arlington in May. She was only sixth in last year's Beverly D behind Éclair De Lune, who is set to defend her title.

The post-position draw for all three Arlingtonraces will be made on Tuesday.

Wigmore Hall: Timeform top-rated in the Arlington Million

"Michael Bell and Hayley Turner have every chance of landing the prize if Wigmore Hall is able to reproduce some of his better form from the Dubai Carnival..."

The Arlington Million (due off 23:15 BST on Saturday) has attracted a strong line-up, including Aidan O'Brien's Cape Blanco and Michael Bell's Wigmore Hall, but will either of them be bringing the prize back over the Atlantic? Timeform go through the runners & give you top 5 ratings for the Secretariat and Beverley D...

Rahystrada (Timeform weight-adjusted rating 129) is a C&D winner having won the Arlington Handicap in Chicago last season, that a smart performance where he defeated Tajaaweed by a length and a half. He has raced three times this season and managed to land the Colonial Turf Cup Stakes last time out, the pick of his form so far this year, but even that leaves him with something to find.

Tajaaweed (129) was a fair performer in Britain for Sir Michael Stoute during 2008, winning the Dee Stakes before finishing eighth in the Derby. Finished sixth in this race last year but won over course and distance as recently as last month when landing the Arlington Handicap and looks one of the more interesting from the home contingent.

Dean's Kitten (126) is a fairly useful performer who gave a creditable display when finishing third behind Tajaaweed in the Arlington Handicap last time out, but there is no reason why he should reverse that form and he comes here with a lot to do.

Zack Hall (124+) won 3 times at Saint-Cloud in 2010 (in two minor events and a listed contest) before an unsuccessful attempt in Group 2 company at the end of the year. Produced by far his best effort in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last time, but every chance that effort flatters him having been beaten four lengths into fourth (of five) behind Sarafina, and would still be playing for places at best even if repeating that.

Gio Ponti (137) won the Man O' War Stakes before finishing second in this race last year behind Debussy, despite having looked all over the winner, and completed the season at Churchill Downs when staying on well to finish third behind Goldikova in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Opened this season with a fifth in the Dubai World Cup and was beaten by Cape Blanco last time, when going for a third Man O'War, but often hasn't seen to best effect and not hard to see him getting back nearer his peak.

Proceed Bee (125) finished third behind Tajaaweed on his penultimate start over C&D in the Arlington Handicap but will do well to even place here.

Cape Blanco (138) was a progressive 3-y-o last season, when winning the Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes. Hasn't produced the same level of form this year, as yet, but beat Gio Ponti by two and a quarter lengths in the Man O'War at Belmont last time and again likely to be at a tactical advantage over that rival, with Spencer likely to keep him handy once more.

Mission Approved (132) was second behind Gio Ponti in last season's Man O' War and finished only fourth behind Cape Blanco in this year's renewal, so looks to be up against it. If reproducing something like his very best form, however, a placed effort isn't entirely out of the question, especially as he could get the run of the race out in front.

Wigmore Hall (139) progressed well in 2010, winning a handicap at Newmarket before going on to land the John Smith's Cup at York. Has continued to improve this season, winning the Jebel Hatta at Meydan in March before finishing third in the Dubai Duty Free, and although he has been below his best on latest two starts, when finishing down the field in the QEII Cup in Hong Kong and the Singapore International Cup, it's not hard to see him bouncing back.

General Perfect (120) is yet to place in Graded company and hasn't won since his debut, so it will be a big surprise if he can figure here given the strength of this year's renewal.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Wigmore Hall
2. Cape Blanco
3. Gio Ponti

Timeform View: Michael Bell and Hayley Turner have every chance of landing the prize if Wigmore Hall is able to reproduce some of his better form from the Dubai Carnival and, at the prices, he makes more appeal than Cape Blanco and Gio Ponti.

Either Cape Blanco's owners are on real good terms with Gio Ponti's owners or they have no class.

The Hays' racing manager Alex Cole was delighted to have beaten Gio Ponti for a third time, Cape Blanco also having finished in front of him in Dubai. "He's met him three times and three times he's seen his arse," he said.

Cape Blanco awesome in Arlington Million

CAPE BLANCO (Aidan O'Brien/Jamie Spencer) completed a brilliant Grade 1 double for Ballydoyle in Chicago on Saturday with a ruthlessly dominant victory in the 29th running of the Arlington Million.

The son of Galileo easily confirmed recent form with dual US turf champ Gio Ponti, whom he had beaten last month in the Man o'War Stakes, with a two-and-half-length triumph over his old rival in the pink and green colours of part-owners Jim and Fitri Hay.

The Hays' racing manager Alex Cole was delighted to have beaten Gio Ponti for a third time, Cape Blanco also having finished in front of him in Dubai. "He's met him three times and three times he's seen his arse," he said.

Sent off a 2.1-1 shot, Cape Blanco was completing a double for Aidan O'Brien after Treasure Beach, his successor as Irish Derby winner, landed the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes earlier on the card under Colm O'Donoghue.

US-trained Dean's Kitten got up for third a neck in front of Hayley Turner's mount Wigmore Hall, who enjoyed a ground-saving trip but could not accelerate in the closing stages.

With Grade 1 winner Mission Approved making the running, Cape Blanco raced just off the pace in fourth place, with Wigmore Hall on his inner.

An ultra-confident Spencer asked him to enter the fray on the far turn and then asked him to claim the race at least two furlongs out.

While this was an early move, it was also the right move and Cape Blanco's opponents were all in trouble as the four-year-old powered home for an impressive victory in one of North America's most celebrated races.

"He's a good tough horse and he's brilliantly trained," said Spencer. "All I did was do the steering.

Cape Blanco stopped the clock in 2m05.39s on yielding turf to become his trainer's second winner of Arlington's fabled Million after Powerscourt in 2005. The winner is being seriously considered for Australasia's number one weight-for-age race, the Cox Plate.

For Spencer, Saturday's victory must have tasted all the sweeter as he had partnered Powerscourt to finish first past the post in Chicago in 2004, only to be disqualified for interference.

"Aidan gave me my instructions and I rode accordingly," added the rider. "I'm very pleased just to be able to ride the horse. There are very few horses that have the will to win like this - the more you ask from him, the more you get from him. He had loads left in the end."

Hayley Turner enjoyed her first experience of US Grade 1 racing. "He ran well for me," she said. "Turning in we went hunting Cape Blanco and when we got some daylight he started running but Cape Blanco went on too, unfortunately."

Gio Ponti's jockey Ramon Dominguez, who won the Beverly D on Stacelita earlier on the card, paid tribute to the winner.

"He had first run on us but you have to give him credit - we were second-best today," he said.

"If you put Gio Ponti in striking range too soon, he is going to go too early and it takes him too much out of his game. He isn't three anymore but he runs so good every time he's out there. We are all so used to his consistency."

Cape Blanco anchors big day by O’Brien, Euros at Arlington

Cape Blanco (Ire) gave Aidan O’Brien his second Grade 1 win on Saturday at Arlington with a dominant victory in the Arlington Million Stakes (G1) and entered the discussion for champion turf male with his second U.S. Grade 1 win.

The chestnut four-year-old by leading European sire Galileo (Ire) won the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) over two-time defending champion turf male Gio Ponti and defeated that familiar rival again in the Arlington Million.

Cape Blanco completed 1 1/4 miles on yielding turf in 2:05.39 under Jamie Spencer to give his trainer, Aidan O’Brien his second Grade 1 win after Irish classic winner Treasure Beach (GB)’s win in the Secretariat Stakes (G1).

The win also completed a sweep of the three Grade 1s by European-bred horses as Stacelita (Fr) won the Beverly D. Stakes (G1).  Each of the three Grade 1 winners was based in Europe during the first half of the year, with Stacelita recetly joining the barn of U.S. trainer Chad Brown.

With two Grade 1 wins in as many U.S. starts, Cape Blanco suddenly is one of the top contenders in the turf male division.

Fitri Hay, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith campaign Cape Blanco, who would be a virtual lock for divisional honors with a win in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. His connections reportedly are strongly considering shipping his to Australia for the Tatts W. S. Cox Plate (Aus-G1) this fall.
