TAB fixed odds have reportedly been welcomed as an additional option for punters looking for the best odds about their fancy.  These days we can start betting on Saturday's card from Wednesday evening.   In many cases the odds offered are way better than those at the track, and the TAB parimutuel dividends.

A punter on course can obviously make a phone call and get access to fixed odds.  I understand they're also now available at many racetracks.  As yet, they can't be offered on Brisbane tracks due to the equipment currently in use for the on-course tote system.  But, media reports suggest they could soon be on the way.

I have some questions to those who CAN currently access fixed odds markets at their local track.

1.  Are fixed odds available at regular tote windows, or special windows?

2.  Are fixed odds available through self-service terminals?

3.  Are the markets displayed on monitors, or is it a matter of enquiring at the tote desk?

4.  If they are displayed, are they just for the next-to-go, or say, the next local race?

5.  Say it's early in the day, and we want a bet in the last race.  Do we then go to the window and ask an operator what's on offer.

6.  Once we call our bet, do we have the opportunity to not accept it, if, say, the odds are less than we expected?

Any other comments pertaining to on-course fixed odds will be appreciated.

I've bet fixed odds using the self service terminal at the track Dubbledee. It has usually been for the upcoming race, but I suspect you could bet on any race where a market existed.

The odds are displayed on the self service terminal itself and a couple of monitors that are user operated via a keypad. That was as of a couple of months ago when I last visited the track.

Howbout every bookie on track these days DD... All got their clerks with laptops and betfair open.. Honestly I wonder why a) they bother and b) how they even make a quid when they all bet the exact same odds these days lol

Easy Mark. They bet the mugs at the track 4/1 then back it on betunfair at 5/1 for a risk free profit!
Easy money, but unsustainable in the long run IMHO.

I used a terminal at Randwick to place my fixed odds bet on my horse that was running ( and winning) that day.

Had to receive some instruction from a local but because I didn't hit the "fixed odds" button I was only given a tote type ticket which wasn;t at fixed odds.
I then went to a counter to see if I could cancel my bet and was told by the operator she could not cancel a bet out of the machine.

Managed to win on my bet but had to be happy with part of my bet on the tote and then part of the bet with bookie.

DD fixed odds for TAB is generally available 15 mins before the scheduled start time to phone & internet customers. It is avaliable at most tracks that have the new self service terminals and generally the market is framed straight after the previous race was run. In the case of the first race i think its 30 mins before the race start that fixed odds goes into the self service terminals.it is these terminals only and the QWIKTEXT terminals that will display the odds. The tote windows machines dont have fixed odds. The terminals will display on a next to go basis at any meeting the TAB covers and will give you fixed option if available on the next race you want whether local or not as yet it is not on all meetings. And this goes for GeeGees, dishlickers and cart pullers.

In regards to betting on Wednesday nite for Sat events i have only known this option with TAB to be on feature races and not general race meetings. I look every day and use the phone, internet ,pub self service terminal and the track and this is the way i punt. I favour fixed odds on most occasions so returns can be worked out with staking plans etc Having said this i notice Saturday Rosehill meeting has fixed odds markets for all races. So maybe this will be th enorm for all saturday meetings. It also has fixed for Doomben & Caulfield & Belmont & Morphetville. I can only see these through internet.

If its any different to this now(changed in last 4 weeks) it would be good to know. Hope this helps.

TAB Fixed odds arent available at Brisbane tracks, but they are at Sunshine Coast, Ipswich,Toowoomba and the Gold Coast, any chance the BRC could spend some money to bring the city tracks up to date?

At the Sunny Coast, they are available at the normal tote windows, and you can ask the lovely ladies there what price a horse is before backing it.

You can also check the touch screen computer thingy, where you can check the fixed price markets.

The markets are available at the same time that the are online, via the unitab website, Brisbane they are available from the start of the day, provincials, like the Gold Coast are only available 10 - 15 mins prior to the start of the race in question, unless it is a feature race of some description.

I love the fixed odds, religiously checking the Brisbane markets, you can most times get better odds than the bookies, and or the tote, and I use my Galaxy Tab, to check the prices before going up to the counter to have a bet, if I don't have any cash left in my betting account smiley

It also helps to watch the movers as they can sometimes give you a guide to where the smart money is going

Normally, when having a bet at the betting meeting, I have money in my Tabcorp account, and utilize their fixed odds betting market also, via their Android App.

Having a device like that certainly helps you to get he best price at the track, as you can easily monitor all markets, including Betfair.

Also I don't have much luck getting a decent price with Betfair, as it seems everybody is trying to squeeze everybody for the best prices, I have much more luck using fixed prices from the totes, but that may just be me  Shrug

Thanks for the helpful replies, fellas. Thumb Up

Maximus, I assume you're betting in Sydney?

Mark, self-service terminals are on course in Melbourne?

Sharks, I assume you're in Sydney.  Seems you're only seeing the next to go on the terminals.  These days NSW TAB has fixed odds up Wed nights for most metro meetings.

MagiC, so at SC you go to any tote window, ask for the bet, or ask for the price.  Correct?  Tote operator calls back the price.  You accept or reject?

Am particularly interested in opportunity to reject the bet when the odds are less than you want (for example).  From what's been said, that's not an option from the self-service terminals?

Thoughts/experience on this appreciated.

OK, sorry to be a pest, but say operator says it's $4.5.  You have your regular grand on, and it's only $4.2?

Any experience with this scenario?  Can you cancel??

OK, that's good.

Waiting on government OK up here.  Major concerns that they'll contribute to "problem gambling".  Sad

Same as any tote ticket DD, you can cancel it, while still at the window.

Normally the girls tell us to check the ticket before walking away  Thumb Up
