TAB fixed odds have reportedly been welcomed as an additional option for punters looking for the best odds about their fancy.  These days we can start betting on Saturday's card from Wednesday evening.   In many cases the odds offered are way better than those at the track, and the TAB parimutuel dividends.

A punter on course can obviously make a phone call and get access to fixed odds.  I understand they're also now available at many racetracks.  As yet, they can't be offered on Brisbane tracks due to the equipment currently in use for the on-course tote system.  But, media reports suggest they could soon be on the way.

I have some questions to those who CAN currently access fixed odds markets at their local track.

1.  Are fixed odds available at regular tote windows, or special windows?

2.  Are fixed odds available through self-service terminals?

3.  Are the markets displayed on monitors, or is it a matter of enquiring at the tote desk?

4.  If they are displayed, are they just for the next-to-go, or say, the next local race?

5.  Say it's early in the day, and we want a bet in the last race.  Do we then go to the window and ask an operator what's on offer.

6.  Once we call our bet, do we have the opportunity to not accept it, if, say, the odds are less than we expected?

Any other comments pertaining to on-course fixed odds will be appreciated.

DD ,
Your $4.20 scenario was why Robbie Waterhouse tried to take action against the nsw TAB as his clerk asked operator what the price was and then they were given a different price but of course it finished up a case of the legislation favoring the TAB though I am sure it was possible to reject ticket if the price wasnt as quoted . Of course this was N.S.W.

Another problem down here is still no place prices displayed on any monitors. Just wish the TAB would set a a permanent rails bookie stand like they have at the Melbourne carnivals .

Yeah, ric.  I was aware of that, but thanks for putting it into this discussion.

To me, it's a major point to have clarified.  As we know, the markets are volatile, particularly as we get near kick-off.

When I put a fixed-odds bet on fone here, I'm warned that prices might change when my bet's accepted.  I haven't tested it out, but I suspect if the bet comes back at less than offered, I have to accept it.  (I must clarify that.)

On the racecourse, there might be the need to display signs that "bets can't be refunded, etc" (if that's TAB's position).

Not quite so simple, as parimutuel betting.

I think it'll be most effective on the Brisbane courses if we can have a bookmaker-like stand showing, say, the main meetings.  Place, of course. blush

I've been frustrated on more than one occasion having a go at my pick on fixed odds via the PC to see after placing the select button my price taken has changed.
To my detriment I have not accepted the bet on occasions and rued the decision. rant

Yes, mono.

I find it very difficult to cop a price that's different to what I asked for.  Not a lot of logic in that of course.  nowink

And I dunno whether I'm better or worse off having not accepted the reduced odds.

I've got a call into TAB to discuss the matter of cancelling fixed odds bets.

Spoke with Tattsbet on a couple of points.  Thanks to them for being most helpful.   Thumb Up

1.  On the fone, if ya bet comes back at a price you don't want, you can reject the bet (in that phone call).

2.  On the track, the punter has 2 mins change the bet - the time is determined by system software.

In BOTH cases, the proviso is that the cancellation is completed BEFORE the race jumps.  (I live in hope that one day I'll be able to cancel my bets after they've gone 800 m or so.)

C'mon fellas I fully understood dd's answer

I was just alerting to the fact we have a favourite bookie down here who DOES let you get on after a race has started...don't find too many like him.

Vintage dd is the only one I know who has a granny nap after lunch....I'm not of that vintage or of that  need just yet. shocked

Maximus, I assume you're betting in Sydney?

Was actually Newcastle DD, but I'd expect to to be able to do likewise at the Sydney tracks (except Warwick Farm - couldn't find a machine there  what).

mono, I understood your point, but saw an opportunity to keep the thread running along.  wink - knowing you'd be having a nap for the rest of the day.

Maximus, thanks for clarification.
