I had something on Alespirit at Doomben yesterday but have just read the stewards' report.

Race 2: MEARS & JEFFS CLASS 6 H'CAP - 1020m
1st - Seek And Find 2nd - Carry To Fortune 3rd - Amber Ale 4th - Just Been Lucky

ALESPRIT (S. Seamer), which slipped over in the mounting enclosure, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. A further examination of ALESPRIT at the barriers also cleared the mare to race.

HULL CITY (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.

AMBER'S CROWN (R. Wiggins) raced three wide without cover throughout.

Approaching and passing the 600m SEEK AND FIND (J. Taylor), which was overracing, had to be restrained to avoid the heels of CARRY TO FORTUNE (R. McMahon). As a result HULL CITY, which was trailing, was inconvenienced.

LIFEBUOY (M. Hellyer) had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight until near the 150m.

R. McMahon, the rider of CARRY TO FORTUNE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 200m he permitted his mount ot shift out when not clear of ALESPRIT, resulting in ALESPRIT being tightened for room between CARRY TO FORTUNE and SEEK AND FIND and having to be checked. R. McMahon's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 1 October, and expire at midnight on Friday, 14 October 2011.

Stewards sought an explanation from S. Seamer regarding the performance of ALESPRIT. S. Seamer stated that the mare was under pressure upon straightening and after passing the 300m was not responding to his riding. He added that in his opinion ALESPRIT, being first up since February, would take benefit from today's race. A post-race veterinary examination of ALESPRIT revealed no abnormality.

R. Wiggins was provided with the opportunity of explaining the performance of AMBER'S CROWN. He stated that the filly was unusually stirred up prior to the race. He added that AMBER'S CROWN travelled comfortably, albeit in a three-wide position, and that after being brushed by HULL CITY passing the 600m, AMBER'S CROWN was immediately under pressure and was disappointing in failing to respond to his riding from that point. A post-race veterinary examination of AMBER'S CROWN revealed no abnormality.

I wonder how many other people didn't know the mare had slipped over in the mounting enclosure?
I know there were a few forumites at the races..Did any of you know of this incident?  OR was it broadcast to the public?

I may have been busy but I certainly didn't know this had happened.

Then again I often miss things especially with the rowdy lot I hang out with. smiley

I should have mentioned that the remark was made after it was announced that Alespirit was undergoing an inspection at the Barrier.

It was announced at the track, if you were in the right spot at the right time you may have heard it.
I cannot believe how poorly Doomben is run...... in particular, the audio is terrible. The betting ring does not get audible announcements.  The front gate is a joke. I have to pay to get in at Doomben so had to line up in a ridiculous situation (before dismissing this as me whinging, go and look and try!) to buy a token to then line up elsewhere to put it in a machine  sad  The front gate had no race books( this was 20 mins before R1  what) so had to go to the raceday office to buy a book.
The enclosure is dangerous for horses with the astro turf covering most of the area. As many punters found out on Saturday, a horse who slips MAY cause an unidentified problem, leading to punters doing their cash cold( I was not one of those)

Ridiculous prices for food and drinks ....... Why would anyone go to the races?????

DJH, rather than continually bleat on here about the same old things, can I suggest a couple of approaches:

1.  Set out your grievances to the BRC CEO.  I would be confident you'd get a response.

2.  Join the BRC.  That has numerous benefits.  You'll never have to pay your way into either racecourse.  You can get up at the AGM and express your views on the way Doomben should be run.  You can even run for the Board and really get the Club sorted out.

As for the "ridiculous" prices charged at Doomben - as I look around they're in keeping with what's charged at say, Hammo, Brekky Creek.  The Club is a business entitled to make a reasonable profit from its sales.  I have no doubt that the margins they work with are fair.  Ever tried running a pub or restaurant for just 6 hours a week?  Think about it.  wink
