C'mon Bart time to weave your magic. Don't know why Gliding is twice the odds of DQ.
I know she was unlucky but it wasn't like Gliding won by a short head under hard riding.

I don't understand a few of these going here.

So you have a nice filly and your options are clash with :
a) AJ at level weights in a group 2
b) MJ recieving a whopping weight allowance in a group 1

surely you could run in either and still be fit enough for the Oaks later in the week

both hot favs may well win, but I know which option I'd prefer to take on, and it carries more prestige and more money

good work by the Mosheen camp, whether they are still in the Oaks or not

Oink !

The Exceed and Excel colt didn't get 2040m against the older horses.  How confident are we that the Fastnet Rock filly will get 2000m (let alone 2500m) against her own kind ?

She is $1.25 in the Wakeful and $1.85 for the Oaks.  Anyone prepared to take her on ?

The thing about the Wakeful is that it is not a set weights race.

AJ was impressive at a mile at set weights but now she is not only up 400m in distance, she also wears at least a  2.5kg penalty to carry 58kg one out against the rest.   It's just another factor that makes me look at $1.25 and think it is much too short.

Another thing is that while she has won on a Dead 5, that was her narrowest victory of her unbeaten career.

(But it is one thing to decline the $1.25, and quite another to put my money down against her)

It would be a brave trainer to throw a filly into the Oaks without a run under 2000m under her belt.

Can't remember the last filly to run off that kind of prep.

Yosei last year ran in the Myer and then backed up into the Oaks.

Riverina Charm went from winning the 1000 Guineas to finishing 2nd to Research in the Oaks without a run in between.

We are seeing time and again the Oaks is the death knell of a filly, they should have gone to the Empire Rose with Atlantic Jewel and proven herself against her elders over a mile.

I would think that going forward, with the Empire Rose becoming Group 1, more horses will try the double rather than going to the Wakeful.  It will only take 1 winner to do the double to make it "normal".

In AJ's case, I assume, from everything that was said, that they were intending on tipping her out after the Guineas, so this is an afterthought.  This race now makes more sense for her as she probably needs the 2000m run, though I am surprised the AAMI Vase isn't considered more often by the fillies.

I don't know.  In 40 years the only filly that has really been competitive with the colts at this time of year was Surround and she was something else.   I might be a conservative old sod in these things but I see no reason why fillies should take on the colts before the new year.  What's wrong with the traditional path ?

I remember Macedon Lady taking on the colts in the Vase - and she nearly got put over the rail on the first turn by that brilliant nut case Helenus.  She did very well to get back in the race and run Helenus to 3/4 length - but she was never quite the same after that.  I thought at the time she would have been better off in the Wakeful.

The mares race is a good option for the miler, but as they are generally 'unknowns' beyond a mile, and Oaks bound filly is altogether better off in the Wakeful IMO.
