I thought I would throw up some graphic sectionals from Saturday - and perhaps some other races - in the lead up to the Cup.

The vertical axis refers to seconds elapsed, the horizontal axis refers to the 200m section where the time was recorded.

The key to finding superior stayers is to look for the long sustained run that appears as a gently arching curve rather than the short sharp peak.  Niwot is a perfect example.

Unfortunately I only have data for the last 10 sections  (from 2000m to the winning post) but the first few sections are often critical in these races as speed spent at the start of a race will often impact negatively on a horse when the whips are cracking.

The following notes may help....

           First 900m -  1600-800m   -  800m-Post

GREEN MOON  57.58 ...... 49.87........54.16
MACEDONIAN  58.96.......49.67 ........49.55
RAFFAELLO      59.48........49.73.........49.84
NIWOT              58.66........49.76.........49.11

Note : I have left out Anudjawun, but his sectional profile is virtually identical to Raffaello's

Green Moon goes directly to the front and sets the pace.  He leads to the 600m and folds.
Macedonian races back in 10th place.  Each successive half mile is faster than the previous. He sustains his (limited) speed
Raffaello, not renouned as a stayer trails the field but gets moving in the second half mile and runs the fastest sectional of the race from the 800m to the 600m (11.67). He can't sustain that and begins to flag but holds on for 4th
Niwot sits back 8th in the run.  Like Macedonian each successive half mile is faster than the previous.  He stays and he wins.

Now for something completely different - 2000m WFA, and Glass Harmonium does his thing, running to the front and keeping the tempo genuine throughout - but not so fast that he falls in a hole.  He needs to be allowed the lead on his own, or at least without being attacked in front.  He steadies in the middle section but does NOT drop anchor. His slowest mid race section is 12.3 which is only 0.64 (or about 4 lengths) slower than his fastest section (11.66) when he was racing to the lead by the river. Essentially he has run the 10 furlongs in 12 seconds to the furlong after his initial furlong - and run 2.02.72, which is excellent time on the Dead5.  As a point of comparison Atlantic Jewel waltzed away with the Wakeful in 2.05 - Glass Harmonium was about 13 lengths quicker.

Mourayan's run is very good as he did not make the best of starts and was pushed to recover his position in the second furlong and then had to chase Glass Harmonium down.  Mourayan ran his last mile in 1.36.78 and his last half mile in 48.11 ..... Harmonium 1.36.91 and 48.35.

Rekindled and Southern Speed got a wriggle on from the half mile (RI 47.81 SS 47.99)  and leave the likes of Foreteller (48.6) behind. but their runs have ended in the last furlong and they take the last section no faster than the winner (12.83) while Mourayan runs his last furlong quickest in 12.68

Sincero's speed profile is a bit all over the place, but relative to others in the race I would not rule him out as a 2000m prospect.  I just think he is better going the other way.

Can't say much for the rest.

Note : I have deleted some also rans from the graph to make it less cluttered.

and just for fun....

But what does it mean ?

It means Glass Harmonium was 24 lengths quicker than Atlantic Jewel to the top of the straight.  AJ would have made up about 11 lengths in the last two furlongs but was still 13 lengths shy of the time Harmonium took to win.

It means nothing actually.  It just illustrates how differently these races were run.

I think it means Dowager Queen will now be hard to beat in the Oaks.

It struck me watching the replays that they were very easy on her  chin
