On another thread there's been discussion of current controversies due to digital images being expanded to show the last veritable pixel in order to get a margin.
In previous times, the photograph seen by the judge was posted for all to see. Even if ya weren't involved, it was standard practice to inspect the print - and of course offer an opinion.
This shot is taken at Doomben in the late 60s.

The gentleman with the braces in the above post, was quite a character.
He was mute, able to utter just a few sounds, but loved his racing and attended every Saturday.

Don't think so, Matt. He's too recent,
One of Brisbane's most recognised race-callers was Tom FOLEY. Tom called for decades on 4BK, and had a 15 minute radio spot at 8 am on Saturdays. That was where ya got probable scratchings, and the occasional rider notification. Was tough for punters in those daze.
Here's Tom with the Betting Supervisor/Racecourse Detective, Fred Robinson (Arsenal, please confirm). The Supervisor was a very much sought after position. He decided on the placement of bookies on the racecourse.

Here's a shot in the Doomben press-box in the early 70s.
Note the modern equipment.
That's the late Garth STUBBERSFIELD (C-M clocker and journo) on the left. To his right is late Telegraph scribe Tom DOYLE, and lower right is Peter HOWARD, who continues to write breeding articles in the C-M.

[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ] Great memories of Tom Foley at Beaudesert one Melbourne Cup day.Tom climbed up the tower after the Cup to call the the next race & announced "now we cross from the caviar of Flemington to the fish & chips of Beaudesert".

In that pic of the boys looking at the photo finish print, isn't that the bloke who sailed the MS Mirimar?
And that couldn't be Ernie Hohn checking where the Fred Best runner finished?

Whoa. What dope of a photographer printed that pic in reverse? They posted those at the base of the judges tower near where the new bookies ring is these days. If you want to argue just check the direction of racing in the finish print.

I will try to post the occasional pic from my archive. Apologies for the quality.
Here is one of a young Percy Sykes with Jack Ingham (back to the camera) at EF near the parade ring / horse stalls just outside the trainers bar. And there, a bit blurred, in the background left is Bill Lenehan (nic The Milkman) of Confidence and Symbolise fame.
As I recall Percy was doing a bit of an entomology investigation on the EF bug that had just dropped off the tree above.
