Sydney Jockey Tells Stewards: "Check My Phone Calls"
One of Sydney's "most talented jockeys has provided stewards with his phone records & financial statements in a bid to quell damaging rumours linking him with a leading punter" reported The Daily Telegraph. Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy confirmed he had "a clandestine meeting with the jockey yesterday but would not reveal the rider's identity". The jockey requested a behind-closed-doors discussion with Murrihy "after recent media reports raised concerns about the company the rider was keeping off the racetrack". Murrihy said last night: "I had cause to speak to this jockey previously at Canterbury last Saturday week about this very matter; but following another newspaper article about the issue, he approached stewards for a meeting. These rumours have been circling for some weeks in Sydney racing & this jockey wanted to set the record straight. I told him this industry is fairly small as we are dealing with the same group of people & rumours do get legs. But he maintains he has had no association with the punter in question & was willing to lay out all his records as proof of evidence. He has given stewards permission to peruse his telephone records & financial statements. I have to say he came across as a person who wants to do what is necessary to put this matter to bed." Murrihy said the jockey's name would not be released publicly "because there is no evidence of any wrong-doing". (Dec 6)

Ken Callander: Punters' safety net a bit fishy

Ken Callander
The Daily Telegraph

A RACE at Canterbury on Wednesday had the smell of dead fish about it.
A week or two ago a prominent owner became aware of the company his jockey was keeping and then thought back to some of the hoop's recent rides. As a result he asked his trainer to engage a different jockey in future and lo and behold the owner has had a bit of luck.

I do not even have one mobile phone. I assume people are not limited by the number of phones they can have ? I assume some phones are on prepaid plans ?

I would imagine the jockey in question could have more than one bank account ?

Checking phone records is a waste of time time one would think  what

Any jockey willing to do the wrong thing, would quite easily get, as Auth has suggested, a new phone and a new number, that is not traceable ?

Like in Burn Notice, a burn phone smiley

Perps are unlikely to communicate over traceable phone connections, now that some have been sprung.

For example Skype allows you to IM on your mobile with Internet correspondents.

Since there is no phone number for the Internet side, it makes perping untraceable, providing you avoid China.

Any idea who are they talking about? I had a look at the winners from Canterbury last week and this may fit the bill:

The horse that was dead was Flying Zero which was ridden by G Schofield and there is a stewards inquiry into it. He isnt the jockey who has offered his phone records. The jockey concerned  is considered by some to be a "gun".

Just watching that race right now. He jumped very well before being dragged right back to last and 3 wide. Be interesting to see what the stewards come up with there.

you can bet your jatz crackers that racing folks will be intertwined into the current harness racing investigation, i think a few people in the racing game will be getting a nasty surprise in the near future  After all, some harness racing drivers actually train gallopers as well, big names too  Tinfoil Hat
