New Bathurst paceway: how can this be sensible?

At a time when 'racing' generally is facing a bleak future and harness racing in particular is floundering, how can it be sensible to spend $5 million on a completely new trotting facility at Bathurst -- to bring it up to metropolitan standard.

BATHURST Harness Racing Club has welcomed council’s decision to grant the club a 99-year lease on land earmarked for the new Bathurst Paceway.

The deal was negotiated between Bathurst Harness Racing Club, Harness Racing NSW and council.

“We have $5 million to spend and that must include a 1000 metre track, a new grandstand, a race-day stable complex and lighting.”

...................building a new paceway had become necessary because the existing 800 metre track at Bathurst Showground is outdated and too small compared with most metropolitan tracks.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact there is no room for expansion.

Mr Dwyer said a lot of the credit for the arrangement must go to Harness Racing NSW and council.

I believe a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Harold Park have been allocated to infrastructure spending around the state by HRNSW.

Seems more sensible than pouring it all into prizemoney.

Makes complete sense. Should be great and will attract some very good horses. Will also help with the gold crown etc.
