I've only found out today that EARNT is not actually a word after it was not valid when I played it in scrabble.

Is anyone as mystified as me?

"'Earnt' is indeed a real word in British English. People seem uncomfortable about using it in writing (even though it is perfectly correct and acceptable) but it the
most widely used form in speech as the past participle.
It's use as a simple past IS, however, incorrect.

So:
"I have earnt £100 today": - CORRECT
 "I have earned £100 today": - CORRECT
 "I earned £100 yesterday": - CORRECT
"When I was young I earned £50 per week": - CORRECT
 "I earnt £100 yesterday": - WRONG"

I checked all that out, mugpunter

My question was is anyone else mystified that it's not valid in scrabble.

Must be an American thing.

You obviously like your scrabble TeeDee.  Same here at times.  I also add that I too have been mystified about the scrabble dictionary.  The wife and I settled on basis that we would purchase an official "scrabble" dictionary and that we did.  If it is not in there, you then can't use it on the board.

Unfortunately though, my scrabble dictionary is still packed away in a box somewhere so i can't add any more.

Cheers

I'm sure I've heard plenty of race broadcasters use the word.

As in a horse doing it tough "he earnt that win"

or

that victory was "well earnt"
