I listened in one day as Shane Dye was legged aboard for a 1400m race at Flemington, he was drawn wide and instructions were to go back .... he fired her out of the gates to lead  went past us in the members at the 200 with a kick and looked home, got run down 

All that said he gave her a great run, just in total contrast to instructions 

Good Jockies don't need instructions and bad jockies don't listen

it's a hard game.

I remember going to the races with a friend of mine who owned a horse. The horse had a bit of ability as it won a few races.  My  mate gave him clear instructions on  how to ride.

Could you believe that the jockey did every single thing possible to do the complete opposite of every single instruction given??

That I found really bizzare.

That was by far the worst incident. Sometimes things just dont pan out.

Also, sometimes when jockies do follow instructions to the tee it costs them, such as under no circumstances come to the outside. Then the horse is trapped on the rail or down the middle he darts back in .

You have to have  a plan but there still is a lot of luck involved.
