Blake Shinn moves to Sydney

2 April 2007
Racing NSW

Racing NSW reports that Melbourne jockey Blake Shinn will join the Gai Waterhouse Stable next Monday.

Now 19yo, Shinn became the first ever apprentice to win the Scobie Breasley Medal in 2005, following his second to fellow apprentice Nick Ryan in the Victorian Metropolitan Jockeys' Premiership - the first time two apprentices had finished first and second.

In 2005, Shinn won his first Group 1 race on Demerger in the Adelaide Cup. Shinn won the 2005-06 Victorian State Apprentices' Premiership with 103 wins. He rode 34 metropolitan winners, finishing second to Ben Melham (43) in the Metropolitan Apprentices' Premiership.

Blake Shinn will make a permanent move to Sydney this weekend and will able to ride down to 52kg. The Waterhouse Stable said that Shinn can be booked for race rides by contacting Reece Murphy on 0425 855 585.

I am and have been a huge fan of Shinn for quite a while now. Yes, he is agressive, but I think he is being singled out now, especially as he has gained a bit of a "reputation". I would suspect if Beadman or Boss did the same it would be marked as "competitive riding"

Maybe Shinn is being singled out, but he is guilty of all those charges.  What I can't understand is this:  when he cops a suspension of 6 meetings in an early race, why does he not temper his riding to avoid a further infringement?  He went out a few races later, did the same thing and copped a further suspension of 9 meetings.

The stewards are as weak as water in allowing these sentences to be served concurrently when they are separate incidents.    His suspensions should, in my opinion, be served consecutively.  Imagine the outcry and the grief if his first infringement brought down another horse and rider and then the second infringement did the same!!!

A total of 15 weeks on the sideline may, just may, have brought him to his senses. :-\

Just ask any jockey who has been brought down by careless riding how he or she feels about it, the injuries, the time off, the healing, the need to get back to race fitness, the fact that he or she can still walk!!!!  We have, over the years, lost too many jockeys (good, bad or indifferent, it doesn't matter) to falls in races.  Some die, some become quadriplegics and others become paraplegic.  Most are forgotten within a year or so and that is a very sad affair. :'(

Great riding on Rabbuka, coimng off the fence, reefing off the leaders heels in which time a 100 times better jockey Damien Oliver takes the rails run you left to beat you

OL - while I agree with you (was on Rubukka) rant and it's knocked me out of the Big6 I can't blame him too much, yes if he had stayed on the fence it was his run and he wins but he was trailing Sir Slick, which has stopped from time to time (although racing better at the moment)

The % ride is to get off the leaders heals as more often than not that run doesn't come. Unfortunately for us it did this time rant
