Lindop breaking new ground again

29 June
By Glenn Davis   aapracing

Adelaide jockey Clare Lindop hopes to continue her groundbreaking feats when she reunites with her old mate Exalted Time in the Caloundra City Cup at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Lindop became the first Australian woman to ride a Group One winner when she steered Exalted Time to victory in last year's Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.

She was also the first Australian woman to ride in the Melbourne Cup when she had the mount on the Leon Macdonald-trained Debben who finished 19th to Makybe Diva in 2003, and the first female to win a metropolitan jockeys' premiership which she achieved in Adelaide in 2004-05.

However, Lindop will be in uncharted territory aboard Exalted Time in Saturday's 2400-metre Listed feature as she's never ridden in the clockwise direction.

Lindop, 28, has ridden in every state bar Queensland and the only time she rode in NSW she won the Broken Hill Country Cup aboard Vandeclare in 2002.

"I've ridden once in NSW when I won the Broken Hill Cup but they race left-handed there like at home," Lindop said.

"I've been riding for 12 years but I've never ridden right-handed and I'm very excited about the opportunity and it will be a great experience."

With 44 wins Lindop is currently second in the Adelaide jockeys' premiership, five wins adrift of leader Paul Gatt, and hasn't given up hope of winning the title for a second time.

Lindop has ridden Exalted Time nine times for three wins and decided to come north to repay some loyalty to the gelding's owners.

Exalted Time's trainer Jim Smith is hoping the Caloundra track, which was still rated heavy on Friday, continues to dry out.

The rising eight-year-old has failed at his only two starts on heavy tracks, in the Mt Gambier Cup (2400m) in 2004 and in a restricted race at Victoria Park in 2003.

"He won at Morphettville on a slow track before he came up here to run in the Ipswich Cup last start," Smith said.

"They tell me Caloundra is normally a soft track but I don't want it too wet.

"There's a lot of pace in the race and Cold Start will lead. We won't be taking him on and we will just take a sit in behind the pace."

Smith was delighted with Exalted Time's performance to finish fifth, less than two lengths from the Kiwi winner Sculptor, in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) on June 16.

"He went into the Ipswich Cup with one gallop under his belt," the 63-year-old trainer said.

"He left Adelaide at 6.00am on the Wednesday morning 10 days before the race and arrived in Brisbane on Friday afternoon after two days travelling by float.

"By the time he got over the trip I could only give him one gallop before the Ipswich Cup and I think he went into the race a little underdone."

Smith plans to back-up Exalted Time in the Queen's Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week before returning home to Morphettville to consider a possible country Cups bid during the Melbourne spring.

Dual Derby winning jockey Clare Lindop will take a break from Australian racing before returning to prepare for the spring carnival and a reunion with Cups hope Rebel Raider.

Lindop celebrated her 30th birthday on Monday, two days after Rebel Raider added the South Australian Derby to his Victoria Derby triumph in the spring.

England will be the destination for Lindop who hopes to at least ride trackwork there while on holiday.

"I'm going to spend six weeks in England in June and July," Lindop told Melbourne radio Sport927.

"My sister lives in London and I will be there for Royal Ascot week.

"I've always wanted to experience riding on the Downs and at Newmarket.

"I'm treating it as a holiday but it might turn into a working holiday."

Lindop said it was the ideal time to take a break as she was not in contention for the Adelaide premiership and Rebel Raider would be in the spelling paddock.

She has ridden in three Melbourne Cups with her best finish so far fifth on Dolphin Jo in 2007.

Lindop has no doubt Rebel Raider will be by far her best chance to win Australia's most famous race.

"I've had three Melbourne Cup rides and I'm looking forward to my fourth," she said.

"Rebel Raider is a genuine stayer and I think two miles won't be a problem.

"Of course there's a lot of water to go under the bridge before then."

While she is at Royal Ascot, Lindop will be among the Australians cheering on Takeover Target.

She rode Augusta Proud to fourth in Saturday's Goodwood won by the international sprint star and said it was a thrill to be in the race.

"It was such a thrill, what an awesome horse," she said.

"Augusta Proud was right on his hammer but in the end she has run fourth, beaten two lengths, in what was probably the best race of her career."

Rebel Raider's SA Derby win propelled him to the top of Betstar's Melbourne Cup market at $17 while he is on the second line of betting at $21 for the Caulfield Cup with C'est Le Guerre at $17.

Go Clare Bear

Australia’s leading female jockey Clare Lindop will make her UK riding debut on Thursday at Warwick.

Lindop was at Royal Ascot on Tuesday to cheer home Steven Arnold and Scenic Blast in the King’s Stand Stakes but it’s back to business on Thursday night (AEST) when she pilots two runners from the Jeremy Gask stable.

"I am looking forward to gaining international experience and learning a different style of race riding,” Lindop told the Racing Post.

“My mother is from Bristol and I've always considered England to be the home of racing so it will be an honour to ride at some of the tracks I've grown up hearing so much about."

Lindop has ridden more than 700 winners, highlighted by Victoria Derby and South Australia Derby victories on Rebel Raider.

She also won the 2006 Adelaide Cup on Exalted Time.

Lindop's English debut delayed
Brad Waters
Friday, 19 June 2009

Australia’s leading female rider, Clare Lindop, will have to wait until Saturday to begin her British riding stint after her two mounts at Warwick were scratched.

Lindop’s first mount Acrosstheuniverse for former Adelaide trainer Jeremy Gask was withdrawn at the barriers after trying to break through the gates.

Last year’s V R C Derby-winning rider was set to partner former Australian maiden galloper Denton in his British debut, also for Jeremy Gask but Denton was withdrawn from his event prior to the meeting.

"It was disappointing, but I'm now looking forward to Haydock on Saturday, where I have two rides," she told the Racing Post.

Interestingly, Lindop will be aboard two well-performed former Australian gallopers for Gask at Haydock on Saturday.

First, Lindop will ride the former Lee Freedman-trained mare Catalan Bay in a rating 75 handicap over 1200 metres.

Catalan Bay has shown promise in England, having recorded a second placing and a last-start fourth from her three runs in her new home.

The former David Hayes-trained city winner One Way Or Another will have Lindop’s services in a rating 90 handicap over 1630 metres.

Formerly owned by Simon O’Donnell’s OTI Racing, the son of Carnegie has only had one start in England for a seventh at Doncaster on June 6.

Lindop makes flying start to UK stint
Brad Waters
Monday, 22 June 2009

Australia’s top female rider Clare Lindop only took two rides to record her maiden English success aboard One Way Or Another at Haydock Park.

Lindop was beaten into second place on Catalan Bay at her debut ride before striking at her very next mount.

Lindop had the former David Hayes-trained galloper positioned well off a fast speed, waiting confidently for the moment to strike and bringing One Way Or Another to the outside to make his run.

Lindop had to curtail her whip use on One Way Or Another in accordance with English rules before crossing the line with a head to spare for former Adelaide trainer Jeremy Gask at the juicy on-course odds of 14-1

Gask was a successful trainer with a small team in Adelaide before accepting a position as the head trainer for Horses First Racing, owned by IT millionaire Eamonn Wilmott.

Wilmott developed The Beeches, a former dairy farm in Wiltshire, to be the base of the operation and Gask has begun to make a good fist of things overseas.

One Way Or Another’s win was Gask’s 19th in the UK and it was the stable’s 12th winner of the 2009 season from 85 runners.

Gask’s stable has a distinctly Australian flavour with tried gallopers such as One Way Or Another and Catalan Bay, a former Lee Freedman mare, performing well.

Other Australian gallopers in the Gask yard include the former Mick Price-trained gelding Horseshoe Reef, a dual city winner in Melbourne and Mrs Penny, a speedy city-winning daughter of Planchet formerly trained by David Jolly.
