Following on from the hugely successful (and very popular) SELECTIONS and RUN OF THE WEEK threads on Brisbane Racing, it's high time we started another one...
This time it's for horses who are seen as non-winners, over-rated, not up to city class, etc, etc.
Let's see who's the first to pick a next-start winner.

Let its backers down at Ipswich today as $2.50fav

Numerous red card carriers and even a black carder maintained their "high-risk" status on Saturday.
This week I'm showing the red card to DENMARKET.  I realise he's had problems but I can't see him winning a city race in his current form.

GJ, did you see Rumbird's run at Scone?  It was some effort, believe me.  I realise he's been a "bookies' horse" to date, but I haven't written him off as a winner of a decent metro race.  But don't ask me when.

No red carders placed last week-end.
Adding Zoe's Lad to the list, his record at Dbn not good with 1 from 11. Has won a couple lately at Sunshine Cst & prefer him back there from now on.

BLOOD 'N' BONEgave a lie to hisred cardby winning the second yesterday.
Black-card carriers NEXGEN and MALTA continue to justify their status.
I've been disappointed inHARBOUR MAGIC in this 3 runs since his good effort on resuming this campaign.  I'm giving him a red card.

Nexgen continues to rob punters' pockets and justify his black card status. Went around at $6.60 on Saturday, and again looked likely to score until he saw the winning post.
I'm yet to be convinced that there are horses who "don't wanna win", but this fellow is starting to sway me.

'Getting' costly? That is an understatement. Nexgen has been ever since he won a good race narrowly last winter which I remember well as I was on him. In hindsight very lucky! But they can make mugs of us all and he could do that tomorrow.

Personally I'd throw Masai Pride into the sin bin as well.

Yeah, Delta.  I gotta look at the film again, but he did cop a big check when he was about to run into the race at the 200.  But we gotta remember it was NEXGEN.  He was last to leave the stalls, too, and Treweek had to ride him hard to get into a midfield spot.
Maybe next start.

Many of us will have forgotten Craiglea Warrior.  He's started short in Brisbane on numerous occasions with punters almost invariably leaving their money in the bag.  After a period of exile, he turned up again in the last yesterday.  Was another good run, but we gotta remember who it is.
I think it's time to show GUERROUJ the red card.  He'll keep running good races in these 1600 m events at Doomben, but I reckon he has little chance of a Saturday metro victory.
One who's definitely on watch is October Grey.

His Weetwood win was a fluke! The track was a disgrace that day. The run of Hard to Catch that day though stands out in the memory. Nothing could make ground from the back that day but he did the impossible and then went on to win the BTC Cup or similar?
OG got me in last time at EF. Thought he was well weighted there but had the ideal run and didn't finish off. His overall win rate is pretty poor so best to stay away. Wet track might suit him though as he at least won that Weetwood on a track that could be best described as 'yielding'.

Looking at October Grey walking around the enclosure, you'd have doubts if he'd see the day out.  Maybe he's taking time to get back in form, but his past two outings haven't been very encouraging.
There certainly was an element of "fluke" about OG's Weetwood win. And most would agree that HTC's performance was exceptional. But let's not forget that OG has staged some classy performances apart from his Weetwood win.

To clarify dubbledee - what I meant to say is that a backmarker that doesn't attack the line will never win a race - unless perhaps it is a race full of squibs run at breakneck speed.

Do horses "attack" the line?
In a distance race do they say to themselves "No not this time, we go the whole way around this great big bloody course before I "attack" the line"?
Do pacers count the laps as go around three or four times?
They used to say Octagonal and Better Loosen Up knew exactly where the line was, I always thought that that was just a rationale for so many of their victories being by narrow margins.
Were Tulloch and Kingston Town as thick as two short planks for winning by big margins?

'Attack the line' is a phrase that Ron Dufficy uses quite often, to illustrate those horses that finish their races off strongly.

For example from yesterday's Rosehill meeting you could say that both Light Red and Lodge The Deeds 'attacked the line'.

On the other hand in Brisbane, Enrique and another horse who had a perfect run in transit in its race, Silver Halo, did not attack the line.

Glen Colless finally outsmarted Nexgen yesterday.  After getting a good run behind a fast speed, Colless had to do no more than ease around the leaders after straightening and the race was his.
Guerrouj was surprisingly hunted along to lead.  He didn't get a lot of peace in front but held on OK.

El Zoro, thanks again for compiling the list.
It's necessarily a long one, because there's a lot of bandits out there, but can I make a suggestion....
You're right in saying some are probably no longer racing at major meetings. Maybe as an act of kindness with the start of the new season we should start from a clean slate?  (Not that turning over the calendar will mean bandits start a new life.)
We can take note of those on the list above, and quickly re-instate the usual suspects as they appear in the new season.  Black card carriers should have a permanent place, IMO.

You will have so many bloody red cards soon. The form in Brisbane bar Rasmussen has been ordinary. The same 1615m horses and 2200m horses always run against each other and a different horse wins it everytime.

LittleMissy, you're free to nominate your own choices.  We're looking for horses that are usually well fancied but are poor conveyances.  Like most things in punting, it's a lot easier after the race.
Repeat offender, NEXGEN goes around today over 1800 in a very tricky affair.  Let's see whether Jim Byrne can repeat Colless's winning ride last week.

Just saying that you could probably add all the stayers and milers in this spring period to the list, because everyone raves about a horse like High Academy when he won 3 races saying he would measure up in the Winter and was disgraced totally by much higher quality stayers. Another example is Dicktator. Was winning his races, comes 2nd in the Queensland Cup, comes to the Winter and i think his best run was a 7th? And who was that other one last year who was a 3 quarter brother to Might and Power or something and could only win one race?

So after blabbering on about all of that, i choose every miler and stayer we see over the next 3 months in Brisbane.

Yes, and there were plenty who were pleased he did run 2nd.
Having a drink with a big band of joyous Felixtrinidad connections after the race, tI didn't hear one who gave their horse any hope in the photo.  One said "I watched the race past the post and was surprised there was a photo".  Another said, "I was waiting for the number to be changed. Another said "I'm gonna go collect this ticket before someone sees the print".  I said "There is a God".

Being suggestive, Hangman.

My point was that when the good horses come back and race, these horses will have NO chance. If even one had a trickle of ability, they would dominate all races being run at this time. I.E (Yass River, Tour Guide etc)

Yes, LM.  That was the race.  Have to say I was stunned that Craiglea Warrior was allowed onto the hallowed grounds of Royal Randwick.
Black card carrier MALTA won well yesterday, in a race that was run to suit.  Full marks to Powell for his ride, too.
MALTA was a critical leg for many of us in yesterday's quaddie.  The black card is now revoked, and he's back on my Christmas Card list.

Recently Geoff asked what it meant when a horse is said to 'attack the line'. The horse SILVER HALO going on the evidence of its past few runs (especially yesterday) is an excellent contrary illustration of a horse that attacks the line. I maintain the card on him.

Maybe so but I reckon that horse turned it up yesterday.

That is consistent with his recent history.

His run 3 starts back sticks in my mind especially. He got the run of the race when well fancied and when let go in the straight did nothing.

MESMERISING has cost punters dearly over the last year or so when racing in Brisbane.  She raced consistently - but consistently got beaten.
Tomorrow she resumes wearing the same Laming colours at Caulfield.  Let's see if the change in water has helped her to the winner's stall.

An even bunch with no stars, though the Freedman horse is pretty handy especially first up. So she will probably start unders.

At $15 Mesmerising could be worth a place ticket though her recent trials were considered to be lukewarm at best.

Sure he was 2nd-up, and not at his best distance, but he was fancied in the betting and did NOUGHT.  It's had to imagine it was the same steed who came rocketing down the outside at Doomben in the last one day to knock us out of a good quaddie.

I think he is a bit harsh on Master Denis ... he was second up , and on top of that he was backing up just one week later.
I was very suprised to see Alan Bailey backing him up so quickly after his first run, but i guess it could have been because of bad progamming due to EI and very limited  open company races.
Was still strange though

I doubt there's a punter who hasn't sacked this fellow at some time during the past year or so.  But he's been let back in the fold post-EI, after a reasonable run first-up.

Some similarities in their names, and their natures it seems.

Mind you KL's last run was not too bad but he has worn out his welcome well and truly.

Another horse that evokes such feelings is Masai Pride...and yet...his run yesterday was okay too until he ran out of puff.

I wouldn't be so hard on Russeting.  I thought she had the job ahead of her from the rails on Saturday with the 57kg.  Goltz decided to make use of her draw and she was under pressure a fair way out.  She stuck to her guns in the straight.
A Commands filly, she's won 3 races this campaign and 5 from 9 overall.  I doubt she'd mix it with the best over the Carnival but I reckon she'll pay her way next prep.

Very harsh on Russeting I reckon. She's had a good prep and was up 4 kilos on her latest effort. How could you sack her on that effort. Some are saying what a great effort from Facundo first up but there wasn't much 'tween 'em on the line. Surely Kenshe must win soon!

Dunno about Tour Guide.  He was above himself in condition at GC, and had a pretty quick back-up to Saturday.  Definitely on the watch list.
I was disappointed in Wakil's run.  Plenty of money came for him, but he failed to flatter in the straight.  One more run for him, too.
Miiller's Wheel will always be short, and his style of racing makes it difficult for him to win.  He'll need things to go right to win over coming months.

I don't think he would have if the leader had of been left alone in front DD, from the stewards report.

Stewards questioned both Trainer R Hawkswell (BUMPERGEE) and Apprentice C Dixon as to the running and handling of that gelding. Mr Hawkswell stated that he had instructed C Dixon to attempt to ride the gelding forward and to take a sit if another runner wanted to lead. Apprentice Dixon stated that he felt the gelding was off the bit at all stages of the event and he was required to place pressure on the horse to hold its position outside the lead. Whilst no action was taken, Stewards advised Apprentice C Dixon that they were of the opinion that he had erred in his judgement between the 1400m and the 1100m in that Stewards believe he had an opportunity to take a sit and have cover at that stage of the event rather than continue to press forward and engage in a speed battle with a known leader in BOTERO (G Auckram).

I Know the connections of Botero went up the hill very confident of knocking Enrique off, but was attacked from the getgo and again at the 800, think it is quite amazing young Manabu Kai can be given time for running and handling on Dougs Mate yet this guy was only given a warning.

Regardless of all that, my point was that the reason Enrique didn't win was that the eventual winner got a charmed run behind the speed.  As to what would have happened had Botero not been attacked we can but speculate.
Enrique fans can back up on Saturday in Race 1.
Will red card carrier Masai Pride earn a reprieve by winning the second on Saturday?  He's got a nice draw and Pengelly steering.

As I recall it Enrique ran up to the other horse, hit the lead and didn't win - he had his chance IMHO regardless of the other horse.

In any event if he was any good he should have disposed of that field easily.

Red-card carrier Masai Pride must read this thread.  On Saturday, resplendent in blinkers, he was back to his old tricks of missing away.  But Pengelly found inside runs to be in the firing line at the 300 but needed miracles to get through.  They occurred, and MP raced away like we know he can.  A masterly ride by Pengelly, and a mighty effort by the horse.  Let's hope he's back in the form that got us excited a couple of seasons ago.
Youthful Jack was shown the door by C-M, and almost brought off an immediate reprieve when 2nd to Acorns.

A post-race veterinary examination of CAMARILLA revealed soreness in the lower back and an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer P. Snowden was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for CAMARILLA before its next start.

Hope they send her for a spell or the breeding barn

I agree.  Swiss Ace is not the sort of horse who deserves a red card.  He was a million to one on Saturday - the weight, the distance, the heavy, the barrier, the quality of the field.
Mick Mair has done a great job with the 3yo, who looked in fine fettle on Saturday.  His winning score hasn't yet come to a halt.

Pepperwood and Stolit both ran into the placings recently at nice place odds.
Might have to start monitoring these horses to sack a bit closer

Agree, Monolith.  Super run by Pepperwood
Why was I watching it?  I took a treble, and did something I've never done before: I changed a ticket.  I had Turrfontein in the first leg.  Went to watch the parade and decided I needed Pepperwood in.  I retrieved the ticket from my wallet and rushed back to the tote window.  Can I change?  "Sure, you're in the time limit".  I said "Same numbers all the way through, just substitute 3 for 2 in the first leg".  LOL.  It cost me the treble of course.

Yes, Grega.  Comments on the Ipswich Cup thread agree entirely.  Whether Diamonds wins another race is problematic, but he shouldn't be sacked on Saturday's run.

Well I guess he can be forgiven for getting beaten in an Eye Liner.
He was good enough a year ago to knock us all out of a big quaddie.

Yes, he's been racing well.  The jump in distance probably brought his undoing.  I guess the implication is that he won't win a Saturday metro race.  Time will tell.

Yes, I usually draw a line through those whose winning runs have come to a halt, but to call it a red card is a little disrespectful to ones who've had a successful campaign.

I've been thinking Heathcote's ON THE UP would have a good campaign.  He's had four runs or so, and hasn't got me even a bit excited.  Maybe he didn't handle conditions yesterday, but he's off my visiting list.

I was stunned to hear AT telling everyone on Sky and on course that Bradfield was the best backed runner in Race 1 at EF on Saturday. Going on his previous run, his chances of running 1800 were about equal with mine to become Mr World.  It came as no surprise to see him run near last.  He gets a red card from me.
Gillian Heinrich was admanant Daedalus would prove the knockers wrong on Saturday.  The horse ran a fair race, but I don't think we'll be getting our Christmas boxes from this ex-"sire prospect".  He's carrying a red card from now on.

Once again punters fell into red-card recipient Mr Doyle yesterday.  There are some so slow learners out there.
I'm giving the gong to AL FAWZI.  Seems that 1200 in metro class is way beyond him.

Showify is definitely on a yellow card, but he might be looking for a middle distance.
