There are lots of eagle eyes following Brisbane Racing on this Forum.
Let's see if they can identify some performances that might lead to a winner in the coming weeks.
(Forumites who aren't fortunate enough to live in the Sunshine State are free to open their own copy-cat thread at any time.)

Spotted this one at Doomben last Saturday.

Xanadu Chamber Clang / Tiercette
Trained by Kelly Doughty

Won at 1200 mtrs at the Gold Coast at its first race start and followed that up with a good 3rd at Doomben.

May be one to follow.

I liked the run of Admiralty 3yo, HARLEY GEORGE (Lyn Manzelmann) at Doomben last Sat.

He came from a wide gate and was looking at plenty of backsides before making a wide run mid-race. Moved up to challenge on the turn and fought it out with My Son Day over the last 200m.  Plenty of "wraps" on MSD, but I thought HG's run was better. MSD certainly had the better passage.  HG has won 5 in Central Qld and might measure up in town.

Bunker yesterday at Ippy. Dwyer trains it. First Aus run.
got caught in the pack and forced to last on the turn to gain a run, switched wide rattled home for 4th.
wins next time on a bigger track and without the slaughter job Rodd did on it yesterday.

Very hard for a horse to jump grades like this one has .
Beat some handy horses yesterday at the farm and looks to have a very bright future.

Yeah, was a tidy performance, mono.  But you've already had one pick this week.

We've seen the deeds of his classy stablemate ALL BAR ONE.  Maybe Rasmussen is the ONE?

Dunno who to nominate from yesterday's card.  Plenty to consider, IMO - Princess Norma, Sunday Adieu, Classic Alibi, etc.  Was a great effort by Smart and Mighty, too.  Seems it's just a case of which one turns up.  Will wait till we see Wednesday at EF.

Unless there are lots of scratchings we may have too wait a little longer to get on.

Good mid-week performances from Stolent and How Brave, particularly the latter.  Were also tidy efforts at Doomben on Saturday.  Hooker Road wins with a better ride, Sunday Adieu and Skyleda had no luck in the same race, and Stepping wins easily with a better alley.

I'll opt for improving mare, SUNDAY ADIEU.  I think she's a potential top quality stayer with natural improvement.  The bad draw and muddling pace didn't suit her on Saturday.  Maybe a race for her at Eagle Farm before too long.

I'm not sure what to make of Skyleda.
If you go back through my selections on the Brisbane racing thread I think I've picked him to win the last few starts.
Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on the horse.

He may well be one of those "gunna" horses.

Yep, IJ5...Sunday Adieu raced well in the Oaks as a Mdn.
Mono....I think most of Skyleda's runs have been very good of late.  As we've mentioned earlier he's one dimensional, and just has to get back.  So when we back Skyleda we're having a couple of bets all wrapped in one.  For sure he'll soon get into a race when things work out, and it'll be a demolition.

If you observe Skyleda's form this horse seems to race best with some gve in the ground, I know he won 1st up at Ipswich on a good surface, but that day he beat a very pedestrian bunch of horses, once he gets a wet track it's time to hook in

I'd reckon it's hard to go past BIKKIE TIN BLUES as the top contender, but we're not gonna top up our Super with him.
Although I'd tipped him, and therefore might be less than objective, I'm gonna plump for BIGGER THAN in Race 3 Saturday at EF.
Having his second run back this colt jumped OK as wasn't far off the speed on straightening.  Scriven was searching for a run for almost 200m in the straight and had to switch around heels to finally get a clear passage.  He finished well for a close 2nd when clear.  Was a tidy effort by the winner to cover ground, but BIGGER THAN wins with more luck.

Heard interview with Brian Smith (trainer of BTB) said he had had 14 winners from his last 34 runners, don't worry about horses to follow, just follow a trainer with a strike rate like that! I've got a good idea why BTB improved at the same time his other horses improved- that's right co-incidence!

How do you come to a decision about what you are going to back in a race? It wouldn't be from past performance would it?
I said follow Brian Smith, he is on a winning streak and it is not likely to stop for a while, I will guarantee you will back more winners than following any racehorse! do not read stats ,they are usually taken over too long a peroid and winning runs do not always last that long, Brian's on one now, get on!

You're falling for a deadly trap - just like those poor souls who sit beside a roulette wheel plotting outcomes and waiting for the signal to back a red, or a black, or an even, or an odd, whatever. As has been discussed on this forum many times, horse races (like spins of a roulette wheel) are totally independent events, and previous outcomes have no bearing on future outcomes.
If punting was as simple as following form jockeys or trainers there'd be far more people sunbaking on beaches in Queensland.
It's well known that Brian is having a good run - but that doesn't make his next runner a better chance than it would have been otherwise.

I've always thought of them more as a training aid and can be a bit decieving as far as form goes.

Watching the replays from Doomben 5/8 where the last 2 winners on the day put in top performances.
Braebrook - although only a 0mw this lightly raced bloke drifted back from a wide draw (13 of 15), pulled to the extreme outside on the turn and finished off with plenty of gusto to post his 4th win and second in a row.
Nexgen - who had finished 2nd behind Step Right In last start (Roman Squire 3rd, Regimental 4th) backed up that run by racing 3 deep the entire race moving up to challenge on the turn, hard ridden to win but it looks like more in store.

Well Skyleda did the job for us yesterday.  It might not have been the "demolition" predicted above, but had he not had to wait fro Darkside Lass to get away from him on straightening, it would have been a 6 length margin.

re barrier trials
i have for the past few years won picking horses 1st up /2nd up or 3rd up where the form from the BT has been  my guide. You would be surprised at some of the odds.  Before queensland withdrew theirs from this site i had alot of luck - especially with horses being either a) false fav's - or over the odds.
THANKs for the link- jappy

I've never looked at barrier trial results, but I think the fact that a horse has or hasn't trialled is worth consideration.
Barrier trial form is likely to be misleading because we don't know the weights carried, or the plates worn, or the jockey's vigour.
And lots of trainers use "jump outs" to fit a horse for a race.  We see no records of them.

I'm venturing to Royal Ipswich for this week's ROTW.
The Ryan-trained 4yo SOVEREIGN DREAM resumed in Race 5 on Friday and started favourite.  He had to go back from his alley and stayed wide while Byrne was rating the leader (and eventual winner) to a nicety.  Brought wide from the turn SD had to sprint home with the leaders and did a grand job to go down narrowly.
A win coming up for this fellow.

Watching the replays from EF 12/8 a couple of horses who are finding it hard to break through but continue to put in:
Vocalic -jumped from the 9 gate in a 1200m 2mw to take up the lead, battled on strongly to finish 4th behind General Patton beaten under 2 len.
Socialist - as is his pattern of late drifted right back in the field and then tried to thread a way through - Rassmussen too good but not far off the placegetters.

Looked smart today, with a couple of handy gallopers behind her.
She'll have to go to the good classes from now on.  Hope she wins, since a mate part-owns her.

Well it's a bit of a sad story, vedder.  The previous owner had put a lot of money into building up a bloodstock collection, but died at a young age.  The horses were sold off, to my knowledge. Liam Birchley put together a syndicate and Devil's Inside won at her first start for them.

I don't think there's any argument that this week's ROTW has to be SCATTERGUN.  He blitzed an average field of Brisbane stayers in the Doomben heavy.  He's off down South and looks likely to win again, but we won't be servicing our bankcard debt by backing him.
One who might be hanging around here is Brian Guy's 3yo filly, BAREENA.  Started first-up at EF on Thursday over 1000m on a heavy track.  She jogged behind the leaders to the turn but then waltzed away once Seamer showed her some space.  Should win again.

... be wary of horses that look sore when betting. In Brisbane Race 5 for instance everyone will tell you King of Trumps will win, but he is sore by his head carriage. To my eye, the last thing he needs is another run on a hard track. He might still win because of the poor class of animal he is opposed too, but I’d strongly doubt it. If he were sound – and I’d say he has a niggling injury that they can’t fix - he’d bolt in, but you can see he’s arthritic, or something along those lines, by his action. When the jockey goes for him he gets his head up. He’ll again be under the odds, so I’d back Nediym’s Image each way to beat him with the young Rocky kid Luke Dillon on him – and it is good to see him in town. The race is a leg of the treble, so if you can afford it, I’d take the field because it is a possible “result” race that a horse from left field can win. Additionally King of Trumps has never won beyond 1400 metres and has failed to run a place in his first two 1600 runs, so at a measly 3-1 you’d rather bet against it than back it. I worked out a long time ago in life that money is hard to come by and easy to get rid of, on horses like King of Trumps.

The foregoing was a pre-race assessment of King of Trumps' chances on Saturday as posted on the justracing.com website.

Considering the horse is "sore" and "arthritic", it was a tip-top performance to win on Saturday.  Following on from a couple of unlucky performance in previous Brisbane starts, he didn't make it easy by blowing the start.  Brought around the field coming to the turn he unleashed a powerful finish and the result was never in doubt.  That was just his second run at 1600 and I'd reckon he'll go further.  He looked to be carrying his head alright to my eyes. Nice horse.

Was a pretty impressive effort by Cairns filly, DIRTIERE, to win the 4th at Doomben today.  She took on a couple of speedy locals and held them all at bay in the run home.
One eagle-eyed forum member noticed the filly was lame in front as she crossed the line, and bad news greeted connections on returning to scale.
Reportedly "did" a tendon.  Trust she can get back to the track in the future.

DD, the owners of Dirtierre our very good clients of ours. We actually assisted organising Brad Pengelly to ride the filly today. We knew she would jump and run and lead the field, just hoped she was good enough to hang on which she did. The owners are from Cairns, committeman of the CJC, and they made the trip down for the race. The of course were ecstatic after the win. The filly is injured, we will know more in the morning, but she will heading straight to Massie Lodge for a spell and some scans on the tendon. Hopefully it is not too bad, as she does have plenty of ability.
Last spoke to the owner about an hour ago, celebrating in Brissy watching umpteen replays of the race. And very good luck to them

Some noteworthy runs during the week.
At Toowoomba on Friday, ADAVALE HORNET,MIXED DOZEN andPAGAN COUNTY turned in remarkable performances to win their respective races.
I liked the win of second-starter MASHUDU at the Coast yesterday.  Was just a short Maiden, but he looked good the last bit.
A couple of exciting finishes at the Farm yesterday where the leaders looked certain to score but were gunned down on the line.  A great run by SERENOTE resuming, and she looks set for a successful campaign.  SPUR ME ON held on well in the last and might be returning to his best.
I'm gonna nominate BROADWAY VENTURE - one I tipped in the fourth - for this week's ROTW.He went to the post paying $78 and would have won with any luck.  He's had problems as this is just his 10th start as a 5yo.  Young Plumb took him back from his bad draw but he worked home well from the tail to just miss 3rd.  Everyone saw the run, but he should pick up a mediocre sprint before long.

DD, Dirtierre has badly torn the near front flexor tendon (Grade IV). The swelling was so bad, they could not scan her for 10 days. And I could not announce anything here until all the owners had been informed and the vet report discussed. She has to be stabled for at least a month, then allowed into a small yard only, with only gradual build up of walking allowed over the following 2 months. Not finally decided but it is highly doubtful she will ever see a race track again.
Very bad luck for the owners who are a great bunch of people and certainly could have looked forward to further city success with this filly. I suspect they will try to find a stallion to send her to next breeding season.

Dunno what to make of Broadway Venture, gratlog.  I'm no fan of Plumb, but don't think we can blame him for its poor efforts over the weekend.
Going to plump fo lightly-raced 4yo mare PRAVANA for the ROTW.
She's eligible for C2 but took on some seasoned campaigners on Saturday last and was poorly placed at the weights. Colless jumped her out and was ridden up closer than expected.  She didn't have the best of runs from the turn.  Colless then lost his whip in the straight.  Definitely worth following.

I didn't watch all the races from Doomben on the weekend, but gee Classic Karla has to be close to RTW.  From 2 alley, the kid managed to get him 3 deep the trip and seven wide around the corner.  Didn't balance once and ended up under the arches.  Didn't stop him sticking his big, ugly, lovely grey head out on the line and getting the choccies.
And yes, I am massively talking through my kick.

Last start GC winner Mashudu (mentioned in post 55) won at reasonable odds yesterday over the border.  I expected it would be odds-on at its next appearance.
Were some flashing runs at Doomben on Saturday, including Tattyam, Femmebot, Mr Sequential, and Decibeel.
I'm gonna go for DECIBEEL as this week's ROTW.
We all know of her talents when things go right.  The fact she's one-dimensional is always a worry when outlaying our cash, but she should find some middle distance races to suit over the summer.

I know it was only a 0MW, but geez, I thought Luke's Turn ran well first up in the last on Saturday.
First up without a trial, outside alley at the 1110m and had to be gassed to get over to lead.
He was entitled to chuck in the towel after working so hard early, but fought on the run 2nd beaten a length by a horse who had all the favours and to whom he gave weight.
S'pose I'd better declare that I've an interest in his mum .

Yeah, it gave a fright to some Punters' Club members, j.r.b.
Your mare did a fair job, too.  Prospects looked bleak when Funlove was cantering outside her at the 300, but she fought on OK in amongst some handy mares.  Freshen up and another easy 1200 at EF is in the offing.
I intended to mention Silent Song, as well.  She's obviously a pretty talented female.

Heading to lowly EF Maiden for this week's ROTW.
Monashee Mountain colt BYTHEMOUNTAIN opened his racing career in the 1000m event from almost the outside barrier.  Scriven bounced him out but was caught wide in a hectic speed.  The horse was entitled to capitulate in the last bit but he found plenty and ran 3rd.
Dunno if a gelding op might be in the offing, but he looks to have a future as a racehorse.

Some impressive performances by some of the younger brigade during the week.
At Doomben on Wednesday in the 4th, 3yo Danzero filly DANLASS from Hawkes' stable did a good job to win her maiden at her second outing. From an ordinary draw she was ridden out, was three-wide in the lead till she crossed to the rails at the 600.  Tackled in the straight she fought on like a tiger to just win.
Yesterday at the Gold Coast 3yo gelding RING RING wearing the Sky Heights colours overcame an ordinary start to hold off all challenges in a hectic finish.  Chance he's come back an improved horse.
In the next race Trevor Bailey's Redoute's Choice entire COSTA SMERALDA won her 2nd race.  Jumped to the lead and just kept going to win easily.
But I'm gonna give the ROTW to Alan Bailey's newcomer SHEW STONE.  A filly by Intergaze she jumped well and turned for home well clear.  Whiteley eased her right down but still had a big margin at the judge.  Might not have beaten much, but she looks extra smart.

New to contributing to this thread, however I was very taken by the run of Point Made today.  This former VIC was posted 3 wide for the most the journey and in the straight he kept finding hard to almost snatch the money at very nice E/W quote.
Of interest Point Made is a half to one of my favourite horses Pentastic.  Lets see if a change of environment and trainers touch can get this guy a few wins.  Look for more barnstorming finishes.

Everyone will have spotted it, but for the record, I'm giving the ROTW to the Show A Heart filly, SATSANG.
Trained by Helen Page, and having her first run, she had to contend with a bad draw and wide run.  Byrne stoked her up from a slow start, and spent the entire race at least 3-wide. She passed STYLIZED at the 300 and held a narrow margin to the line.  Maybe STYLIZED isn't as good as was thought, but was still a sterling effort by SATSANG.

There were plenty of races to throw up good runs during the week.  From a financial perspective, I thought BUZZ put up a great performance. Money aside, the horse stage a big run from the tail, and he might have another city win or two ahead of him.
Forgetting the betting angle, I'm giving the ROTW to first starter AL BE NIMBLE who won a weak affair at Doomben on Tuesday.  Carrying the GRAND ZULU colours, he lobbed in front under a hold but once let go in the straight it was a massacre.  Time was good, too.  More to come, I'd think.

Did manage to hear it on the radio but hopefully will get to see the runs and maybe get some feedback from owner.

As to whether ASH should be red carded thats up to you , the hander outer of Red Cards, but I'm sure the owner doesn't care how many cards or what colour for that matter they are as long as he keeps on picking up the $8,000 2nd prize cheque each start.

Good to see our mate SHEW STONE lived up to his rating on debut.  Ridden back in a fair field at GC yesterday she finished on to win well.
Call me stupid, but I'm going to Toowoomba Race 2 for this week's ROTW.
It was a lowly 1000 metre Maiden, and the field was probably as bad as we'll ever see on a Saturday, but MAJOR YEATS won in a hand canter.  A 4yo gelding by Dantibes he lobbed in front and just went further ahead.  The previous winnner SLUGSISTERKATE has ability, but this one ran faster time.  He'll obviously be taking on better horses next outing.  Let's see how he goes.

We were treated to some sparkling performances yesterday by Gold Edition and Natural Destiny.  And there were also some tidy efforts by a couple of the beaten brigade including Hard To Catch and Masai Pride.
I'm giving the ROTW to the Bryan Guy's smart filly, LASORON.  Having her first run back she was drawn the extreme outside.  Bowditch tried for a spot mid-field but was never a hope of getting in and she travelled four-wide for the entire trip.  She wasn't entitled to finish on as well as she did.  Obviously, she's a top-shelf filly with a bright future.

I'm going to Caloundra for this week's ROTW.
Lion Hunter 3yo colt KING LEONIDAS was having just his fifth run in the last event.  He'd won his Mdn in good style at GC resuming on 2/12 over 1300m.  Up to 1400 he didn't begin well and was locked on the rails till about the 600.  Tanti then brought him wide and he quickly put paid to the opposition.  I think he can win in town.

I don't think there's any doubt that the ROTW has to be NATURAL DESTINY'S scintillating win at Doomben on Saturday.  Track record carrying weight.  Wonderful to see.  Yesterday's effort by FORT 'N' WON was more than noteworthy, and let's not forget POLAR WOLF'S return to form at Calounda on Sunday.
But looking outside the obvious, I'm going for Desleigh Forster's LOW PROFILE.  I've already sounded off about Seamer's ride.  She finished 2nd, but should have won in a canter at EF on Thursday.  Be on her next run.

Astute form students would have noticed, dd, that Polar Wolf's 1200m form this time in has been impeccable, and his form at other distances atrocious. So apparently it was not so much a return to form as a return to 1200m.
Alas, I am not an astute form student .

Yesterday we saw a ROTW that had flashing lights all over it.
Three-year-old YASS RIVER turned up for his debut at Gold Coast in a 1200 m Maiden..  He began pretty well, and settled fourth, one-out.  From the 600 he began to drop off, and turning for home his chances looked 100/1 for the place let alone for the win.  Even in the straight one would have thought he'd finish closer to last than first.  However, in the last 150 he remembered all he'd been taught at training and flashed home for an amazing win.
One super effort. Looks as though he'll be following in the footsteps of his illustrious stablemate, Lachlan River.

I don't think many would quibble about giving classy filly GOLD EDITION a gong after her demolition job at GC last week.
But I'm gonna go outside the obvious and make BITOFASMARTIE this week's winner.  In the first at EF yesterday, although potentially suspect at the distance, he was taken to a long lead mid-race by Rachel Mason. He would have been10 lengths in front at the 1000.  Coming to the turn he appeared to be showing signs of distress, and looked gone to the world with Moon Echo cantering alongside him.  But he refused to surrender and Mason kept him going to win by a nose. Amazing effort.

This week's ROTW is going to BLACK SUIT for his gutsy effort to win the sprint at Doomben on Friday.
From an awkward alley he went forward but got no peace and was kept wide outside the leader all the way.  Sequallan looked to have his measure at the 200 but he found plenty the last bit.  He's no champ, but likes the sprints at Doomben. (Hope he hasn't read about Bob Bentley's plan.)

We saw a smart 2yo filly in the shape of CHINCHILLA ROSE win at Doomben on Saturday.
She didn't know too much about the racing game, but given her head in the straight she raced away for a convincing win.
A full sister to Leone Chiara - centre of the Craig Newitt inquiry - she was passed in for $430,000 at the Melbourne Inglis sale.  The high value placed on her by connections may yet be vindicated.

I'm giving this week's ROTW to King Leonidas.
This fellow had a minor setback when he was withdrawn before a race at GC last month, then was wide all the way at Doomben when he next appeared and had no hope.
Last Saturday he went around in a handy field at Doomben and finished on for an eye-catching 3rd.  He's improving, and will make short work of a city field before too long.

I thought there was plenty to like about How Brave's run.  I was a bit surprised Desleigh Forster opted for the 1350 first up, but she had him well wound up.  Cahill let him find his feet early, but got a great run till the 300 when he had a bit of difficulty getting off the rails.  Cruskit's no slouch and had enjoyed a good cart behing HB.  (King Leonidas could be better than both of them.) Maybe HB would prefer more space in the run.  I wouldn't be dropping off him at this stage.

Desleigh Forster reports that How Brave is on its way to Sydney.
I'm giving this week's ROTW to disappointing filly, STYLIZED. By Anabaa, she's tested Bruce McLachlan's patience with 4 placings from 10 starts prior to her win at Doomben last week.  The track certainly had the edge off it, but she did a good job to make a long, wide run, and win easily in an open Mdn.  She might have turned the corner.

More to your info DD.
How Brave may be surprise Sydney runner

Tuesday, 20 February 2007:

Talented three-year-old How Brave will be flown to Sydney and could be a surprise starter at Rosehill on Saturday.

Trainer Desleigh Forster originally planned to float the gelding south this week for the Listed Gosford Guineas (1600m) on Sunday but is now considering an easier option in a 1500 metre three-year-old Class Six at Rosehill.

"I spoke with his owners yesterday and we decided to nominate him for Rosehill as a precaution against a wet track at Gosford," Forster said.

"The Rosehill race doesn't look very strong but at this stage we still favour the Gosford Guineas, although at this time of the year Gosford can often be wet."

Forster will study the weights for both races before deciding which venue will be the launching pad for a possible AJC Australian Derby campaign for How Brave.

The weights for both races will also decide whether regular rider Michael Cahill makes the trip south to continue his association with the son of Chief Bearhart.

How Brave, a winner of two of his five starts, was considered a certainty beaten when second to Cruskit in his 1350 metre comeback at Doomben 10 days ago.

Cahill had no doubt How Brave should have registered his third win after he was held up for a run in the straight.

Cahill believed How Brave would be worthy of an autumn campaign against his own age in Sydney but wasn't convinced he'd be a genuine chance in the $2 million AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 7.

Meanwhile, exciting stablemate Prince Vilhelm has been sent for a short break and will miss a Sydney trip following his spectacular win at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

Prince Vilhelm, a $4,000 bargain buy as a yearling, sat five wide in his debut race before hauling in Toowoomba flyer Carry On Kosa for a narrow win.

A son of under-rated sire Dane Supreme, Prince Vilhelm will have three weeks in the paddock before Forster prepares him for the Brisbane winter carnival.

"His aim will be the Sires Produce Stakes but he'll be better over more ground so the TJ Smith might be a logical race as well," Forster said.

"We thought about taking him to Sydney but he's a QTIS horse and the prizemoney is just as good in Brisbane."

Cahill, who rode Prince Vilhelm, was impressed with the victory, but had some reservations over the quality of his opposition.

"Either he's very good or the opposition was very poor," Cahill said after the win.

"He did a lot wrong and still won. I had just about given up on him on the turn but he found some and there was plenty of petrol left in the tank."

We had to wait a while for her to come back from a spell, but Sunday Adieu demolished a C1 field at Doomben today.

There were some eye-catching performances at Doomben on Friday.
By the last race all the good judges were thinking "Gee, this is a back-markers' track.  Ya gotta be back and then come wide."  But as if on cue, Leges Opinio jumps to the lead in the last and never looks like getting caught.
We've already mentioned Sunday Adieu.  She turned on a big performance and would have to be Brisbane's most promising stayer.  She won't be a betting proposition - maybe for some who like the shorties.
Charvicky looked a world-beater when she finished all over an ordinary field.  She retains her red-card.
I thought we'd give the ROTW to a Bryan Guy 2yo gelding named QUALOSUN. As the name suggest he's by Sequalo.  He didn't show any speed and coming to the turn his backers would have been reaching for the brandies.  Once Byrne got him into the clear he steamed home to win well.  Dunno where Guy will head with him, but I see more wins ahead.

Yes it was a very good effort D.D. What about How Brave  (aptly named) ,never settled in front and was attacked left right & centre yet still showed enough tenacity against the older horses to run 3rd. I was tickled pink with the effort. It gets my vote and I can't wait till it gets a softer lead and settles a bit better  $$$$$.
Monolith..was a very good effort by HB, considering was just his second run in and the way he was ridden.  He looked well beaten in the straight but fought on like a lion.  Hope he keeps progressing to the staying races over Easter.

Tackled in the straight she fought on like a tiger to just win
Danlass will go very close at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.  Load up.

I'm going outside the metropolitan area for the ROTW.
Lightly-raced Danewin filly DOUG'S MATE was scratched from other engagements on Saturday and raced on her home track, Toowoomba.  She trounced an ordinary bunch, but again showed her promise.  I expect trainer Michael Nolan will be looking at  middle-distance events from now on.  The spies won't have missed her, but she looks a future city winner.

tailed off early and not called until he crossed the line, close up
Did anyone see the race.
Does the QTC have a web site that has footage?

No video footage available on either club's websites, wily.
I couldn't see much in WL's run.  He went back to the tail, stayed on the rails in the straight and passed a few in the run home.  Maybe 1600 would be more to his liking.

Not a lot of class in the staying races up here.

DD,
Regarding Dougs Mate was a nice win. She does have a tendency to hang in and if she comes to town will need a strong jockey on board or a dream rails run. She is in very good hands and if she can run 2000/2200 she should win plenty in town.

The price assessors aren't impressed with Sunday Adieu's chances tomorra. $17 in today's C-M.

The question has to be posed, is she a Qlder or Victorian?  She was offered for sale in Vic, so now that she's turned out to be a star she'd have to be a non-Qlder. Surely?

And what a stunning run by Sunday Adieu at the Farm today.  Back at the tail in a slowly-run race, she was wide and wondering what was going on.  She unleashed a big run down the straight to finish on the heels of placegetters.  A classy stayer.

I'm heading to the GC for the ROTW.
Ex-Victorian BEAR'S COMMAND (Commands-Miss Chakra) was first up and making its debut in the Sunshine State.  Like all Victorians, he showed the benefits that flow from moving north, and made short work of an ordinary C2 event.  Hammersley was content to sit back from the jump and gave him plenty of room in the straight.  He soon had them covered and raced away to an easy win.  I'd think a city win is in the offing.

Everyone's seen it, but for the record, we have to record the unlucky run by COLONIAL LASS at EFon Saturday.
Pearson had ridden her a treat from the start, and coming to the turn I said to a mate "how far Colonial Lass?".  But soon after straightening, Willie took the wrong option.  He made a move to come around the two leaders.  No sooner had he done that and Sister Catherine decided she'd move out, taking CL with her.  Had Willie stayed where he was, CL zips through and wins by 3.
She's a pretty handy mare.

ROTW-recipient Bear's Command raced at EF on Wednesday.  Taken back to last from a bad draw he flashed home for 4th.  Should win soon.
Some fine efforts at Doomben on Saturday by Go Sequalo, Scattergun, Wakil, etc.
I'm gonna give the gong to John Hawkes' 2yo gelding, Artwork. From a rank-outside draw at a treacherous start, McMahon had little option but to go back to last.  The speed was solid, but he didn't get any favours in the straight.  He found a gap and raced away.  I expect Hawkes will take him south before too long.

We saw the class of Sunday Adieu in the first on Saturday.  While she'll be facing better company from now on, she treated her opponents with disdain and raced away to a good win.  A middle-distance campaign over the Carnival is in the offing. She's a  on the rise.
There were some noteworthy efforts during the week as well.  On Wednesday at EF, Bevan Laming brought back his 3yo filly, Stravinsky's Image.  Was just a Maiden, but she won in a canter and appears to have more wins coming her way.
On Friday at Royal Ipswich, George Osborne's gelding, Saint Sebastian maintained his unbeated record.  Sitting wide from the jump, he went to the line hands and heels.  He'd caught the eye at GC on March 17, and this performance was even better.
I'm giving the ROTW to Bryan Guy's filly, BAREENA.  At EF on Wednesday she faced a task from an awkward draw.  Things couldn't have gone worse for her, and she was forced to race wide for the entire trip.  Even so, Byrne got her to finish on well.  She's a talented performer.

I'll go off early this week and give the meat tray to Taisho for the run of the week.
Jumped 600m in trip, carried 58kgs, gave plenty of pudding and a big start to the favourite and runner up, Wakil, and rounded him up easily to score.
He's now 9 from 30, but has actually been first past the post in 10 of his last 19 runs (lost one on protest) at distances of between 1200m and 2200m.
Not bad when you consider those last 19 runs include an AJC Derby, a QTC Derby and Grand Prix (his owner's a little ambitious at times).
Oh, and you can throw in the fact that he tore a tendon back in October 2005 and had to have stem cell surgery and 16 months off.
A versatile and very genuine horse.

I'm going back to the Friday meeting at Gold Coast for this week's gong.
Shaun Dwyer's 3yo colt READY WHEN YOU ARE has been looking for distance. He found it in a C4 over 1800 m.  Ridden forward by Byrne he didn't get a lot of peace, but strode away under moderate pressure in the straight to win like a good horse.  Was just his second win, but he's always promised plenty over longer trips.  He'll salute again before too long.

This week's award goes to the Sunshine Coast 3yo, BLACKWOOD'S CHOICE.
Having just his 4th run, and returning from a break, he faced a pretty hot field at EF on Saturday.  In the words of trainer David Peoples "I was going to trial him but decided he might just as well have a run."  Neither of the horse's owners bothered to attend the meeting.
BC was so far back even his most ardent admirer wouldn't have given him a show.  The fast-run race might have flattered the run to some degree, but his effort to sizzle home and get up on the line was something to see.  He's a smart performer.

Going outside the obvious to mark down Bruce Brown's 4yo DECEPTION BAY.  This fellow's always shown ability but has been a victim of poor rides, poor alleys and bad luck.  Yesterday he went back to the tail from his outside draw and while he was no hope in the run home he found the line well.  No doubt he's looking for further but there won't be any easy pickings coming up

Some memorable - and not so memorable - runs at Gold Coast today.  One performance that was truly remarkable was that of Tamworth 4yo THE JACKAL.
Anyone watching the Prime Minister's Cup could be excused for asking after the race "Where has this fellow been hiding?".  Handicapped by a horror draw, he wasn't well away, but King immediately elected to go forward.  From that point he was no closer than 5-deep and his chances looked forlorn on the turn.  But in the straight he found another gear and powered home for a great win.  There might have been some hard luck stories behind him, but it's hard to detract from the win of THE JACKAL.
He gets the gong for Run of the Week.

There were lots of noteworthy performances in Brisbane during the week, but to my  mind the one that should be highlighted is the win by Bryan Guy's troublesome 4yo Masai Pride.
At Caloundra on Thursday he was opposed by a mediocre bunch, and in keeping with his price, he won in a canter.  The highlight of the run was the fact that he stepped with the field.
MP is a very good galloper.  Let's hope he gets his chances over the coming weeks.

I'm giving the ROTW to Richard Otto's 2yo colt, SIR PENTHOUSE.
As mentioned by Monologue, Kyros looked stiff in the race.  I think SP's run was exactly what we're looking for as he steps up to the EF races.  Rodd took him back to the tail and he was giving away a long start.  He found inside runs, but the horse seemed a bit shy (had cheekers on for the first time).  I liked his work the last bit, considering it was just his 3rd run and is by Pentire.

We've spoken about Pat Duff's 3yo THORONDO on the Brisbane threads.  He won his 2nd start ever at GC and paid over $100.  Ken Pope rode it that day and has been on it ever since.
Last Saturday the horse turned up in a C3 at GC.  Starting pretty short he was way back all the way but unleashed a strong burst the last bit to win well.
I doubt we'll be getting 100/1 for some time yet - unless it's in the Stradbroke.

I'm going to the GC for the ROTW.
Smart trainer Brett Dodson took his ex-Vic gelding GET IT OFF to the Coast for a 1200 m C1.  The horse jumped well, and took a sit behind the leaders going half-pace.  Bennett eased around the leaders on the turn, and although Steve Hawkins didn't see it till it was 4 lengths clear, the horse sprinted away and walked in.  Looks a winner of the future for sure.
GIO is by Rancho Ruler and has had  just 9 runs.

This week's ROTW goes to SHOW BIZ KID.  Sure, he's been up and down more times that an elevator, but he turned in a super effort in Saturday's Healy.

As usual he had to contend with a horror draw, and Scriven had no option but to go back.  Turning for home he was last behind a wall of horses.  While The Jackal was launching his winning run out wide, SBK was running last with no hope of a clear run.  Still near the tail well inside the 200, Scriven eventually got him to the outside and he flew home for 4th.  Not wanting to detract from the winner's effort...but had this fellow got a clear run he'd have made it very interesting.

I thought that the run of Rampant Lion was extraordinary. Five deep going forward for the first 600 around a bend before getting to the front and then had the audacity to kick away from a good field in the straight before being run down by Ice Chariot. From gate 20 it was actually a great ride as Bowditch never rushed him forward and rated him well when he finally got to the front.
Given that he is a six year old with nearly 40 starts this run was out of the box from where we would normally put him, although he did jump out of the ground when he beat a good field with 58kg over 1350m at Doomben at his previous prep.
He has changed trainer from one of the best in Pat Duff to someone I don't know in L J Gough. Might be enjoying the change of surrounds.

This fellow had his 3rd run today and although sitting wide mid-field on a track that appears to be favouring leaders, he sprinted home into the wind and scored his 3rd win.

Might be a bit late now, but he's a very good horse.  And God bless his big .

You might not have seen this item from Friday's The Courier-Mail about Lindsay Gough.
Trainer cries foul on weight
by Tony Meany
YOUNG Eagle Farm trainer Lindsay Gough this week lodged a complaint with Queensland Racing about Rampant Lion's weight at Caloundra tomorrow.

Rampant Lion was runner-up to Ice Chariot in the Tatt's Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm last week but meets that horse on .5kg worse terms.

The two horses meet again in the $202,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast tomorrow and Gough's hopes of scoring his biggest win have been dashed.

"I just think Pentathon has compressed the weights in the race and I have been the main sufferer," Gough said.

Brisbane chief handicapper Lester Grimmett said he agreed with Gough but there was little he could do about it.

"I had to work on a different scale of weights and there would be others in the same boat," Grimmett said.

"You will also find Cold Start and Sculptor meet on the same terms as when they quinellaed the Ipswich Cup.

"Sculptor has had another start since but there was only a nose between them at Ipswich."

Gough, 38, trains an eight-horse team at Eagle Farm and Rampant Lion is a boomerang horse for him after he prepared the galloper early in his career.

"I think I had him for about the first six starts of his life and he developed a bad case of seedy toe that required an operation," Gough said.

"It is a foot-rot condition and in his case most of the foot had to be removed and he was turned out for a long spell.

"His owners transferred him to Peter and Sandra O'Sullivan due to the foot problems and from there he went to Pat Duff.

"I have had him back this preparation. I really hope the track can get back to dead for him. If it was anything worse I would seriously have to doubt whether he would get a strong 2400m in the heavy going."

Rampant Lion has already proved a genetic freak because he is by ill-fated sire Lion Hunter, who is noted for producing high quality sprinters.

"He's out of a mare who won one race at Murwillumbah over 1000m but he has shown stamina since he was a young horse," Gough said.

Gough is best known for his association with sprinter Star Of Canada, who won a string of races before being sold and transferred to Alan Bailey.

Yep, was a good win by the Showgirl.
I had 6 horses including VG going for plenty in the race, but Scriven gave me an early indication of the outcome when he started looking around soon after straightening.  Don't ya just love it when favourites win.

Cheers DD, he ran another nice race on Saturday.
The last thing I did before his race on Saturday was to have a straight out bet on King Latarmis after having left it out of the first and second boxes in the tri.

Bunker yesterday at Ippy. Dwyer trains it. First Aus run.
got caught in the pack and forced to last on the turn to gain a run, switched wide rattled home for 4th.
wins next time on a bigger track and without the slaughter job Rodd did on it yesterday.

arakaan  ..You find the horse in question your talking about was called THE BREAKER not BUNKER. And you right in your assessment of the run & the ride, I was on it myself and I was nearly reduced to tears.
Journeyman THE BREAKER goes around in the last today at Eagle Farm.

This fellow had his 3rd run today and although sitting wide mid-field on a track that appears to be favouring leaders, he sprinted home into the wind and scored his 3rd win.

Might be a bit late now, but he's a very good horse.  And God bless his big .

George Osborne has a very smart 2yo in the shape of LALETTA (Dash for Cash-My Duchess). The grey filly trounced her moderate opposition at Rocky today.  Dunno where Osborne will head with her, but I suspect first stop will be at the barrier behaviour reform school.

Was a another good run by Yass River.  He raced wide and was under pressure to keep in touch, yet still finished on well.  I'm sure he's looking for longer, and we won't see the best from him until he's over 1600 or so.
Was an eye-catcher by 2yo JIVE BANDIT.  Coome had him wide and doing work for most of the trip but was beaten by one who had the gun run on the rails.

Great effort by Jive Bandit, dd, after a torrid run.
Paid $5.50 the place here, which was scarcely believable coming off a very good debut win in a strong form race.
Definitely one to follow.

Yeah, j.r.b., nice odds for sure.  I'll have to start looking at these 2yos now.  One who's worth watching is the Show A Heart colt, My Limit, who was scratched from Saturday's event, presumably because of the bad draw.  Trained by Robbie Heathcote, he races in the Show A Heart colours - not that he'll go any faster because of that. Ross Cutts, who owned SAH also owned My Limit's dam, Wabble. I don't remember Wabble racing.  Anyway, My Limit was stiff on debut and shows promise.

I saw the Kanpeki race on Retro.  She sure did get home well.  But I was taken with the run of another ex-Qlder in the race, Our Montague.  Did you see it?  It's in the stripes.  He looked promising when Barry Baldwin had him in Brisbane. He then went to Vic where he won 3 races.  I think plenty will have a big mark against Our Montague next run.

MY LIMIT raced at Doomben on Wednesday, and although beaten by a reasonable margin, the run was still quite good.  He raced wide for the entire trip and copped a decent side-swipe on straightening.
Another good run among the beaten brigade was the mispronounced COXSWAIN.  Definitely worth watching.

At Toowoomba on Saturday night I liked the first-up run of  DANTINA (Dantibes-Telltina).  She's a 5yo mare, full sister to Tellson and half to Tellem (and others).  To date she's been a blot on the family, with 1 win from her previous 18 starts.  Maybe she's a late bloomer and should be watched over distance.

Big things ahead for Yass River

27 July, 2007

Promising sprinter Yass River might be lacking in stature but trainer John Morrisey expects bigger things to come from him after his Doomben assignment.

Morrisey describes the Daggers Drawn gelding, who will be chasing his fourth win from five starts in the Meridien Retirement Living Hcp (1350m), as a "little skinny horse" and lucky to stand 15 hands.

Yass River, a rising four-year-old, went through the Karaka yearling sales in New Zealand and sold for $NZ34,000 but didn't make his race debut until January this year when he won a maiden at the Gold Coast.

"He's always been very small and I never started him as a two-year-old because he needed time to grow," Morrisey said.

"I'm not sure what he weighs but it wouldn't be much, I can assure you.

"I've just bought a new set of scales to weigh my horses but I haven't had the chance to weigh him yet."

Although Yass River was one of the smallest yearlings to go through the Karaka sales, Morrisey took an instant liking to him because of his pedigree.

"He's out of a half-sister to Madison Point who I used to train," he said.

Madison Point won 11 of his 30 starts for Morrisey including the Group Three The Shorts (1100m) and Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m), both at Randwick, in 1996.

"Madison Point was a very good sprinter who won the Shorts and Hall Mark Stakes for me but I think Yass River can get over more ground than him," Morrisey said.

Yass River won his first two starts on his home track at the Gold Coast before winning his first metropolitan race in a midweek Class Three over 1200 metres at Doomben on June 29.

The gelding then made a huge impression when he motored home after being caught wide to finish second to the highly-rated Stolit in a 1200-metre Class Six at Doomben on July 14.

"He pulled up really well after his last run and there's no reason why he can't race well again," Morrisey said.

"It's too early to tell whether he's up to a spring trip interstate."

Trainer Barry Miller has rejected offers of up to $500,000 for Stolit, the latest bid coming shortly after the gelding beat Yass River last start.

My Limit ran a very good 2nd at Doomben yesterday.  Dunno what Robbie Heathcote has in mind for the horse, but if he continues on he won't be a Maiden for much longer.

Kanpeki raced at Warwick Farm yesterday and ran a sound 4th.  She didn't have a lot of luck.

Our Montague has gone back to Victoria - don't ask me why - and is running in the sixth at Ballarat today.

Going back to Eagle Farm last Wednesday for Run of the Week.
Rising 4yo mare Bella Heart showed plenty of promise earlier in her career.  But she's had problems and was having just her ninth run last week. Escaping the Wyong floods, Kim Craft brought her north.  She stayed midfield for much of the race with Byrne showing patience.  Once in the clear on the turn she had them covered.  Was just a Mdn, but I think she can win again.

There were plenty of good runs around the ridges during the week.  On Saturday at Doomben the wins of MY LIMIT, MAJORCA and TEASING were full of merit.  All should win again.
I liked the run of Bryan Guy's 3yo colt FACUNDO at GC as well.  The horse is still learning to race but looks set to win his Maiden very soon. Anyone heard of the sire, Van Nistelrooy?
But I'm going back to EF on Wednesday for the ROTW.  Hawkes often produces Maiden winners at mid-week meetings, and a lot don't go much further.  In the first race Commands filly CLOTHING made its debut from a wide draw.  McMahon was able to find a spot just behind the leaders, and after coming out on the turn it was a matter of "how far?".  Should win again.

Yeah coins, was a good effort.  I guess it was precisely what was expected of him given his form and odds.  Spoke with owners this morning and they're thrilled with the horse's continued zest for racing.
What happens next start will be another matter.  Hence I didn't consider him for ROTW.

I couldn't believe the succulent odds offered about Umaprince yesterday.  I went place only, but the outcome of the race was never in doubt.  On his Brisbane form, at WFA at Royal Rocky he should have been odds-on.  Now, that WAS a case of "overs".
Just on the Majorca issue....  It raises a point that gets punters all tied up in knots.  Does it really matter if he was beating crap fields?  He's racing against the quality of horse he'll be meeting for 90% of the year.  The way he's racing he'll keep beating them.
One thing a punter should learn early on is that $2.00 the place for Umaprince on a Tuesday at Rockhampton is no different to $2.00 the win on Makybe Diva in a Cox Plate.

I was surprised to hear Larry Olsen on Sky express reservations about the horse over the increase in distance.  He tipped Burgundy Prince.  I'd have thought YR's races to date had suggested he'd appreciate a mile at least.

Let's get Laletta's breeding right.
The Morrisey stable report that YASS RIVER will have one more local run over 1800 metres before spelling.  The horse is the smallest in their stable, below 15 hands and weighing in at 457 kg.
Good news that YR's high-flyiny stablemate LACHLAN RIVER is heading towards another Spring Campaign.
Boom Dash for Cash filly, LALETTA, comes to Brisbane tomorrow in a C6 over 1400m.  Interesting runner is the Heathcote-trained NOTRE AMOUR resuming after a break.

Interesting to me for two reasons:
1.  It's unusual to see a lightly-raced filly who probably not yet 3, running first-up over 1400 metres.
2.  I've been singing her praises on here since her debut run at Royal Ipswich with S Wright aboard.
