No surprises for the opening gong.
When Robbie Heathcote moved in to the new Eagle Farm training set-up he gave notice that he would be a major force in Brissie racing in the coming months.
How right he was. After going through a wretched sequence of 2nds, he's come up with a dozen or so winners in the last week.
Heathcote's QUARTET at yesterday's Doomben fixture was a rare treat for stable followers.
His stable must be up around the 50 mark, so there'll be plenty more ahead. The good thing is that they won't all be favourites, either.

Gee dd they might be now you've let the cat out of the bag.

Got to give credit where credit is due....he works hard and deserves the success he is having at the moment.

Tossing up between Shaun Dywer (for transforming Atapi from a miler into a super sprinter) and Pat Sexton (for his achievements with Dirty).
I'm plumping for Pat Sexton, with the expectation that Atapi will be in the limelight in coming months.
In the 4 months he's had Dirty, she's gone from a Maiden to Saturday's win against some of the best 3yos in Brisbane.
From today's The Courier-Mail:
Pedigree for quiet trainer, Bart Sinclair writes
THE unassuming Patrick Sexton has been training just on 12 months from a remote country base but already has made a mark, Bart Sinclair writes.
Sexton, 50, has a team of 50 in work headed by Saturday's Vo Rogue Plate winner Dirty.
Although he has held his own licence just on a year, Sexton came with a wealth of horse experience.
His father Peter, 72, is a respected horseman who has been successful training horses on the Darling Downs over a long period.
And Patrick spent 10 years learning some extra tricks of the trade as one of the senior staffers at Gai Waterhouse's operation at Randwick.
Sexton was not at Doomben on Saturday. He had runners at Toowoomba – where he had a double – and Oakey.
It's fairly typical of him to shun the spotlight.
This is an old-fashioned country product.
Yesterday Sexton was at pains to talk up his support staff and the facilities at Oakey rather than seek any headlines for himself.
"Sam Warrington rides Dirty every day and has done a super job. I wasn't 100 per cent sure about running the filly again only a week apart but she convinced me the filly was spot on," Sexton said.
"My mother and father are terrific supporters and I have a great staff.
"Add that with the fantastic facilities we have here at Oakey and I'm pretty excited about what we can achieve."
LIKE all good Darling Downs products Sexton would love to win a Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba.

Trainer Pat Sexton gets honorable mention again this week for the transformation he's brought about in 5yo Sneaky Long. Followers of the Brisbane threads will recall I was tipping this fellow last year. He was always big odds, and given terrible rides. This campaign Sexton has scored 4 wins from 9 starts with this fellow. He's always good odds. Sadly I've got nothing out of it.
But I'm giving the gong to trainer David Murphy. Murphy was a handy jockey in his young days and in recent years has slowly gone about building up his team. He's also getting a reputation as someone who "places" his horses well. The stable followers don't mind a bet. How can we forget the plunge win by Otonda at Doomben 12 months ago - who incidentally was an exclusive to those who read Brisbane Racing Selections. Murphy won the 3rd at Doomben with Key to Happiness at nice odds.

Tossing up this week between Robert Bradshaw for his efforts in getting Babinda Half back to winning in town, and Mick Mair for his deeds with Swiss Ace.
Gonna go with the Sunshine Coast mentor. He was working under difficulties for a long time with the Cushion Track under construction yet brought 3yo Swiss Ace back to maintain his winning sequence. I can't remember the last 3yo to win a Weetwood, and it would seem that his winning run hasn't yet finished.

The major contenders for this week award are visitor Gordon Yorke for his continued success with pocket-dynamo Nuclear Medicine and young Brisbane trainer Lindsay Gough for getting Rampant Lion to race in such fine fettle.
I'm plumping for Lindsay Gough. Apart from Rampant Lion he's done well with a relatively small team. A quiet, unassuming guy, he obviously knows his trade and can look forward to future success. It seems that Rampant Lion has been around for ages - he raced in the Twba Cup in 2005, and ran 2nd to Sphenophyta in the Ipswich Cup of 2006. This campaign has been his best, and he was never going to get beaten yesterday. Time will tell whether he can match it with the better ones in coming weeks.

This week's award goes to Doomben trainer, Peter Hulbert.
Peter has been around a while and has just a small team but finds a city winner every so often. He's got 5yo Belles Opinion going in fine style. Lots of mares fall by the wayside in their 5th year, but Peter's got this one racing most consistently.
At her fourth run this prep she raced handy on Saturday and then didn't ever look like getting run down over the last 200. She's had to be ridden forward of late due to bad draws. I think she's better with a sit, so there might be more wins in store for her.

This week's award goes to NSW trainer Brett Cavanough for his efforts with NSW country sprinter Helideck.
He backed him up from an EF win last week to blow away the PM Cup field yesterday.

I'm nominating GC trainer Peter Gillman for this week's award. I have to say I've never spoken to this guy to my knowledge, and don't know much about him. Right now I can't mention any other horse he trains apart from SEQUESTRATE.
What a meritorious job he's done with this Sequalo 5yo. The horse has had just 24 runs, so must have had some problems along the way. He's now won 6 races including the Bribie and yesterday's Dash.
Last season he looked like just another handy sprinter, but PG has not got the key to his charge and always produces him as a winning chance in the best local company.

I'll second that
Wouldn't know PG if I fell over him but this horse is on the way up.Has a marvellous stride and great fighting spirit, hope he chases lesser glory than the G1 Stradbroke tho

Amusing snippet in today's C-M.
When connections were called into the Stewards' Room to hear the result of the Daunting Lad vs Sequestrate protest, trainer Peter Gillman was invited to take a seat. Gillman reportedly said "I'd prefer to stand...unless you're about to tell me something to make me fall over".

Bernie Pramberg wrote a story on Mick Mair's racing life recently.
Commenting on his move to Queensland in 1986, Mair said something like "I came here with very little and have got most of it left". LOL.
Mair once told me that during his riding days he'd have his last meal Monday night, and his last drink Tuesday night, in preparation for Saturday's rides. Mick has obviously abandoned that strict regime.

| Heard P.Moody asking a local what the award is and where does he collect it. Apparently there's a waiting list of previous winners asking the same question. | |

| The trainers of the Group winners all deserve recognition, but perhaps the most commendable performance came from ex-NQlder Leon Morton. Morton restricts his team to 3 or 4 these days, yet was able to win the opening two races on Stradbroke Day at Eagle Farm. | |

Very commendable effort by Leon Morton his horses are consistency itself. Also Dale Sutton producing Albert The Fat first up since early April against a reasonable opposition is worthy of a mention and Liam Birchley in getting Devil Inside to run out of its skin at her farewell appearance another excellent performance.

This campaign Sexton has scored 4 wins from 9 starts with this fellow. He's always good odds. Sadly I've got nothing out of it. | I wish I had followed the above advice and include Sneaky in my First Four. Pat Sexton has come under notice previously for his Dirty deeds, and has earned the gong again this week for his Eye Liner win. Dunno if Pat is shy of the limelight, but he didn't bother attending Royal Ipswich, sending along his dad Peter to accept the Eye Liner trophy.

| I'm giving this week's award to EF trainerLiam Birchley for his recent wins with Rags To Riches. (His effort with Devil Inside was likewise commendable.) The horse was going well this time last year, but his future looked a bit dim, I thought after La Salle beat him at Doomben. Since then Birchley's won two good races for a happy team who brought him from NZ because he wasn't handling wet tracks. | |

| Trainer Jim Atkins has won almost every top race in Qld. He was well known in Sydney for the deeds of Dalrello and Grey Affair. On Friday at Doomben he won a low-grade race with Bossie Boy. He gets the gong via the fact that he's recently turned 92!! | |

| A toss-up between Paddy Payne and Pat Duff, but I'm giving this week's award to Pat Duff for keeping Cocktail Supreme going through the Winter Carnival. The horse backed up on Saturday in the wet after a hard run in similar conditions at Caloundra and won the Ascot Handicap in a canter. | |

Pat Duff a deserved winner

| Toss up for Saturday's gong between Liam Birchley and Robert Heathcote. Giving it to Robert Heathcote for getting My Limit to return from a staying campaign and a stint in the paddock to win in good style over 1600. Looks like the horse has a career ahead of him, too. | |

| Haven't seen anything about the award for last Saturday yet, most unusual. All candidates waiting expectantly for news but still no result. The judge must be having trouble sorting it out or has skipped bail. Perhaps I can help The main contenders imo are Lindsay Gough with Awasi Ougi, a horse I've never heard of , and Pat Duff with Rebounded and Victory Code. As two is twice as good as one I'll go for Pat Duff. but it's up to Dubbles to make the presentation. | |
Reply

| LOL, Muggins. Anyone can make the presentation. I was thinking about Twba mentor Gary Bein for getting Dusty Moon home for his first win. The horse was good odds and was quite backable. I take little notice of 2yos but had been taken by its run at Twba two weeks previously. After its win on Saturday I pulled out race which Court won over the Carnival. Was pretty good considering the class of the race. | |
