I would like to nominate one BS Baldwin this week for getting 3 out of 4 at Ipswich on Friday - a top achievement. (Sozzani, Vive Le Roi and Hodges Street)

Ascendant was wide from the jump, never a chance and finished well back from memory.
Don't Pay the Ransom ran 4th.
Yes, a momentous effort for the Baldwin camp.
The odds of having the first 4 in a field of 12 are about 100/1 - if all had equal chances.

I'm giving this week's gong to Doomben trainer Brian Wakefield
Wakefield is gradually building his team, and has seen wins with the handy Cognisant and Poiym.  On Saturday he brought lightly-raced Xaar 4yo Sir Xaar back from a distance campaign to win over 1350.

Fair enough - though he had no winners on Saturday Leon Morton's horses have been ultra consistent and only went under narrowly on Saturday.

Agree that Brian Wakefield deserves a big blast on the trumpet for getting Sir Xaar home.BW always presents well and while he has no big name horses he's done well with what he has to work with..W.H.Trimble is another worth mentioning for  getting 8yo Mr.Aristos first past the post .If up to me I'd split the prize between them.

It's a toss up between Peter Moody (Riva San and Tan Tat De Lago) and Dan Morton (Scenic Shot).
I'm giving the award to Peter Moody for getting Riva San to win the Oaks at good odds.  She's come through a fair campaign and ran away from her rivals at the end.

No surprises for the opening gong.

When Robbie Heathcote moved in to the new Eagle Farm training set-up he gave notice that he would be a major force in Brissie racing in the coming months.

How right he was.  After going through a wretched sequence of 2nds, he's come up with a dozen or so winners in the last week.

Heathcote's QUARTET at yesterday's Doomben fixture was a rare treat for stable followers.

His stable must be up around the 50 mark, so there'll be plenty more ahead.  The good thing is that they won't all be favourites, either.

Tossing up between Shaun Dywer (for transforming Atapi from a miler into a super sprinter) and Pat Sexton (for his achievements with Dirty).

I'm plumping for Pat Sexton, with the expectation that Atapi will be in the limelight in coming months.

In the 4 months he's had Dirty, she's gone from a Maiden to Saturday's win against some of the best 3yos in Brisbane.

From today's The Courier-Mail:

Pedigree for quiet trainer, Bart Sinclair writes
THE unassuming Patrick Sexton has been training just on 12 months from a remote country base but already has made a mark, Bart Sinclair writes.

Sexton, 50, has a team of 50 in work headed by Saturday's Vo Rogue Plate winner Dirty.

Although he has held his own licence just on a year, Sexton came with a wealth of horse experience.

His father Peter, 72, is a respected horseman who has been successful training horses on the Darling Downs over a long period.

And Patrick spent 10 years learning some extra tricks of the trade as one of the senior staffers at Gai Waterhouse's operation at Randwick.

Sexton was not at Doomben on Saturday. He had runners at Toowoomba – where he had a double – and Oakey.

It's fairly typical of him to shun the spotlight.

This is an old-fashioned country product.

Yesterday Sexton was at pains to talk up his support staff and the facilities at Oakey rather than seek any headlines for himself.

"Sam Warrington rides Dirty every day and has done a super job. I wasn't 100 per cent sure about running the filly again only a week apart but she convinced me the filly was spot on," Sexton said.

"My mother and father are terrific supporters and I have a great staff.

"Add that with the fantastic facilities we have here at Oakey and I'm pretty excited about what we can achieve."

LIKE all good Darling Downs products Sexton would love to win a Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba.

Trainer Pat Sexton gets honorable mention again this week for the transformation he's brought about in 5yo Sneaky Long.  Followers of the Brisbane threads will recall I was tipping this fellow last year.  He was always big odds, and given terrible rides.  This campaign Sexton has scored 4 wins from 9 starts with this fellow.  He's always good odds.  Sadly I've got nothing out of it.

But I'm giving the gong to trainer David Murphy.  Murphy was a handy jockey in his young days and in recent years has slowly gone about building up his team.  He's also getting a reputation as someone who "places" his horses well.  The stable followers don't mind a bet.  How can we forget the plunge win by Otonda at Doomben 12 months ago - who incidentally was an exclusive to those who read Brisbane Racing Selections.  Murphy won the 3rd at Doomben with Key to Happiness at nice odds.

Tossing up this week between Robert Bradshaw for his efforts in getting Babinda Half back to winning in town, and Mick Mair for his deeds with Swiss Ace.

Gonna go with the Sunshine Coast mentor.  He was working under difficulties for a long time with the Cushion Track under construction yet brought 3yo Swiss Ace back to maintain his winning sequence.  I can't remember the last 3yo to win a Weetwood, and it would seem that his winning run hasn't yet finished.

The major contenders for this week award are visitor Gordon Yorke for his continued success with pocket-dynamo Nuclear Medicine and young Brisbane trainer Lindsay Gough for getting Rampant Lion to race in such fine fettle.

I'm plumping for Lindsay Gough.  Apart from Rampant Lion he's done well with a relatively small team.  A quiet, unassuming guy, he obviously knows his trade and can look forward to future success.  It seems that Rampant Lion has been around for ages - he raced in the Twba Cup in 2005, and ran 2nd to Sphenophyta in the Ipswich Cup of 2006.  This campaign has been his best, and he was never going to get beaten yesterday.  Time will tell whether he can match it with the better ones in coming weeks.

This week's award goes to Doomben trainer, Peter Hulbert.

Peter has been around a while and has just a small team but finds a city winner every so often.  He's got 5yo Belles Opinion going in fine style.  Lots of mares fall by the wayside in their 5th year, but Peter's got this one racing most consistently.

At her fourth run this prep she raced handy on Saturday and then didn't ever look like getting run down over the last 200.  She's had to be ridden forward of late due to bad draws.  I think she's better with a sit, so there might be more wins in store for her.

I'm nominating GC trainer Peter Gillman for this week's award.  I have to say I've never spoken to this guy to my knowledge, and don't know much about him.  Right now I can't mention any other horse he trains apart from SEQUESTRATE.

What a meritorious job he's done with this Sequalo 5yo.  The horse has had just 24 runs, so must have had some problems along the way.  He's now won 6 races including the Bribie and yesterday's Dash.

Last season he looked like just another handy sprinter, but PG has not got the key to his charge and always produces him as a winning chance in the best local company.

Amusing snippet in today's C-M.

When connections were called into the Stewards' Room to hear the result of the Daunting Lad vs Sequestrate protest, trainer Peter Gillman was invited to take a seat.  Gillman reportedly said "I'd prefer to stand...unless you're about to tell me something to make me fall over".

Bernie Pramberg wrote a story on Mick Mair's racing life recently.

Commenting on his move to Queensland in 1986, Mair said something like "I came here with very little and have got most of it left".  LOL.

Mair once told me that during his riding days he'd have his last meal Monday night, and his last drink Tuesday night, in preparation for Saturday's rides.  Mick has obviously abandoned that strict regime.

I'm giving this week's award to EF trainerLiam Birchley for his recent wins with Rags To Riches.  (His effort with Devil Inside was likewise commendable.)
The horse was going well this time last year, but his future looked a bit dim, I thought after La Salle beat him at Doomben.  Since then Birchley's won two good races for a happy team who brought him from NZ because he wasn't handling wet tracks.

All candidates waiting expectantly for news but still no result.
The judge must be having trouble sorting it out or has skipped bail.

The main contenders imo are Lindsay Gough with Awasi Ougi, a horse I've never heard of , and Pat Duff with Rebounded and Victory Code.

I was thinking about Twba mentor Gary Bein for getting Dusty Moon home for his first win.  The horse was good odds and was quite backable.  I take little notice of 2yos but had been taken by its run at Twba two weeks previously.  After its win on Saturday I pulled out race which Court won over the Carnival.  Was pretty good considering the class of the race.

Where do you think Ms Radecker erred in her ride on Rebounded, Larsy?
The horse was never going to lead in the first bit after Telegrand jumped and was clearly there to lead.  Rebounded takes a while to get rolling.  When Telegrand eased mid-race Radecker realised she was not going to win if the race was a sprint home and went up to challenge the leader.  I can't see what more she could have done under the circumstances.  Will be keen to hear your assessment.

That's not necessarily Gallagher's comment, but it doesn't matter.
The facts are....Those sorts of assessments are fine if we're talking about machines, but we're talking about animals.  Rebounded is full of tricks, and Mandy is the only jockey who can get the best out of him.  (That's according to Pat Duff, not myself.)  The horse is one-paced, and does not have a sprint.  Take a peek at his previous runs, and you'll see this.  Had she sat off the speed to the turn the backmarkers would have picked her up regardless, IMO.

For what its worth I don't think Mandy did much wrong either.

She let the horse roll and it is a one paced horse and can sustain that speed, which is its biggest asset.

The sectionals in the race compared with the last race run over the same journey indicates she didn't do anything wrong. Rebounded was not exactly gassed in a speed duel with Telegrand.

Had it been a speed duel Rash Promise or Secrets Untold would have easily run right over the top of them.

Then again maybe I am looking at the wrong 'sectional times'.

Yes, I think we all remember the day at SC when Mandy tried to ride Rebounded "cold" and Masai Pride got to her soon after straightening and it took Rebounded a 100 metres to get going again.  Some good judges on here thought it would have been much better to let Rebounded run - even though MP would have won the race.

SC trainer Trevor Miller gets the tick this week for keeping Sommersea Drive going to his hatrick.  Miller is a guy who never seeks publicity, and generally works with second-string horses, but he regularly finds winners at SC and in town.

I'm going back a bit, early or mid  50's, Exhibition Week at Eagle Farm, for this but should never be forgotten.
Legendary trainer H.F.Best produced the same horse,Proletaire, to win the three feature races on each of the three day meeting.
Proletaire won the Ascot 7 furlongs on Sat, backed up on Wed to win the Exhibition over 10 fur and capped it off on the next Sat by winning the 12 fur Metropolitan .
That's some feat deserves a big blast on the trumpet.

There shouldn't be any quibbles about TOTW.
GC mentor Alicia Willick has been praised on this forum on many occasions by yours truly.  Yesterday was the biggest of her career when she took three horses to Doomben: Fastnstraight, Tellasecret and Gunsari.  All WON at nice odds.  The stable reportedly had a big win - and good luck to them.
Expect more from Ms Willick.

As with 2 weeks ago after Tellasecret won we knew Gunsari was a cert. Gunsari outworked Tellasecret tuesday morning. Fastnstraight may now head to Taree so Alicia can win the cup in her old stomping ground. Keep a watch for Gunsari as he will go on with it and pulled up great. Will advise Alicia she is TOTW in the morning.

A treble from a small stable with only three runners at the meeting is an achievement worthy of a special award .It's gold medal time for Alicia.

I'm giving TOTW to wily Kiwi Brian J Smith for keeping Double or Nothin in winning form.  She had the perfect run, but it was a commendable effort to get her to win over a distance at the end of an arduous campaign.
Brian Smith has had his own health problems, but is presently in top order.  He claims this is due to a small device (pumping out light of varying frequencies) he carries with him at all times.  {Note: Such stuff has not been medically proven.  Please seek professional advice before trying it at home.}He even uses it on the horses when they need a freshen-up.
The C-M quoted Smith as having said that trying different ploys with his horses is "what gets me out of bed each day".

Former top rider Colin O'Neil is presently battling serious health problems.  Let's hope it was a tonic to Colin when his daughter Cherie trained her first metropolitan winner at EF today.
To the raucous cheers of her owners, Je Ne Sais Pas won well under a masterly ride from Shane Scriven.
JNSP was bought in Melbourne as a tried mare - but with a reputation as one that was challenged in the cardiac department.  She's now had 3 runs for Cherie for 2 wins and a close 2nd.
Well done, Cherie.

Alicia Willick returns to Doomben with the same trio who won her the TOTW award a fortnight back.
Gunsari has drawn the red in Race 1.  Fastnstraight has the checks in Race 5.  As usual, Tellasecret is close to the outside fence in Race 6.

I'm giving this week's award to GC mentor Maryann Thexton for her training effort with Redoute's Choice colt, Chilled.
The horse has given her plenty of problems while there's been expectation that he'd be a good performer.  He won a scamper at GC resuming Aug 1, and she turned him out in good order for Saturday's 1350 m event.

Notable performance by Brian J Smith for his double on Saturday.  He's already received an award for his work with staying mare Double or Nothin. He finally got Scattergun to the post in front.  That's probably quite an achievement, but the horse hasn't won for 18 months.
This week's award from me is going to Bryan Guy for his continued success with ex-Kiwi mare Eleda.  She was a late nom for the race, but was turned out in fine fettle.  She copped some interference and would have been a tragedy licked.  The way she's racing, her winning streak might not yet be over.

This week's award has to go to GC mentor Alan Bailey.
His smart performer Charming Rogue has now won 7 straight including a couple in Sydney. Maybe heading for Vo Rogue status?

Another gong to Brian Smith.  His staying mare Double or Nothin just keeeeeeeeps winning.  It seems as if she's been up as long as the Town Hall.
I was one who thought she was a risk yesterday.
Either DON is a very good horse or BJS is a genius - probably a bit of both.

I think Robert Heathcote is due for another bar on his awards to date.
He's left the state for a weekend of fun down south, yet still trains winners all over the place.
And special mention for his work with 5yo mare On The Fridge.  Yesterday's win was her 5th from 7 runs.  There are more to come.

I'm giving this week's award to "battler" GC trainer Noel Doyle for his win with 2yo filly Our Dreaming.  Doyle had travelled the Tale of the Cat filly to Gatton trials after a 500 metre trial win at GC and was very confident before the race.
Doyle's last 2yo winner in Brisbane was Palidamah.  I doubt if Noel has yet recovered from the shock photo-finish defeat of Don't Play by Robian Steel in the Stradbroke about 20 years ago.

Do you have any idea what that quinella paid DD, A friend of mine ( yes i have friends ) backed Robian Steel, i had my rent money eachway on Don't Play. If memory serves me correctly the pair were both around the 33/1 mark ?
Was he the original trainer of the great Stylish Century ?

MD, I'm sorry I don't, but it would have been $150 odd.
I had Robian in the Straight Six but not Don't Play.  But a mate who was in the SS with me had bought DP at the Tatts Calcutta and had it going for $30,000.
We were alive going into the last leg of the SS.  We had J Penza on Granville going for $120,000.  Constant Kingdom (5/2) ridden by L Dittman going for $2600.  CK beat Granville a half-head.

Special mention to Eagle Farm trainer Tony Crane for his two-venue double mid-week.
Victorian refugee YATALA won convincingly at EF on Wednesday.  Carrying the same colours, NSW recruit LARRY'S SONG won the sixth at Ipswich yesterday in good style.
Crane cut his teeth in Central Qld and is doing well with a small team.  The rejuvenated JUJULIO runs at Doomben tomorrow and looks another good chance for the Crane stable.

Ran 4th. Worked hard and never had a chance to get on the bit early and had to stop. Winner came from well back to get home over top. Leader ran last so not a bad effort from him although is a little tender in a leg and has gone to the paddock for a week. They ran the same time as The c3 1200(washed won that). In the maiden they walked home in 35 and change but in the c3 home in 34 and a bit. Would like to see him ridden with a bit more patience next time as he can front up to both washed and tellasecret over 400 in work. Will also be better over 7/8f imo where he can lurk handy and use his sprint to get home. Will have learnt alot and be better for it.

Was a very good effort by Jujulio considering he was wide and chasing from the 700 while HTC was getting the perfect run on the rails.  He should be winning again before too long.
Another commendable effort by Tellasecret, as well.  He's probably Brisbane's most under-rated sprinter.

I had the opportunity to speak to Ms Willick pre & post race.  Gee she is  good trainer and Tellasecret presented in top order in the yard and hardly blew after.
Tellasecret was a huge run as it missed the start and had to work very hard for 200m to cross and lead.  No wonder it got tired late, yet it still had a kick on the line.

Yes, she is a good trainer. She's been getting accolades on here from me for quite a while.
Was a great run by Tellasecret.  He would have added some spice to my quaddie - as would have a couple of other placings.

Another classy performance by Bruce Hill to turn out Hey Elvis in fine fettle yesterday, but I'm giving the gong to fellow GC trainer Helen Page.
Helen went close with first-upper Satsang in the second, but her effort in the last with 3yo POWER OF GEORGE was particularly noteworthy.  Coming off a GC win, he was up against the cream of Brisbane's current 3yos.  Jason Taylor had no qualms in riding him to the lead and he just kept running for an impressive victory.
Helen is always accompanied by hubby John Page who was one of Sydney leading mentor's in the 60s and 70s.  From memory, he trained Silver Sharpe, won won the three eastern-state Derbies.

While there were some noteworthy performances at Doomben on Saturday e.g. Richie Stephenson, Trevor Bailey, Leon Morton, Brian Guy, I'm sharing the award between Bruce Hill and Liam Birchley for getting their respective charges down to Sydney to compete at the top level in the Villiers.

Just a few weeks back the same horses fought out a finish at EF.

No dispute about this week's TOTW.

LIAM BIRCHLEY not only produced Sarge in Charge to win impressively at EF on Friday: he also won the Doomben Slipper with MM favourite Paprika, then backed up Rags to Riches who went down narrowly to kennelmate Pepperwood.

Townsville trainer Stephen O'Dea is in Brisbane with a small team.  Two of them ran at EF today for a win by 2yo KISS ME KATY and a 2nd by the widely-travelled Danehill Dancer 6yo GO CART first up since May.

Kiss Me Katy had won her only start in Tville in Oct and O'Dea sensed he had a smart filly.  She had no luck in the early stages today and did a good job to finish on and nail the promising Funtantes in the shadows of the post.

Full marks to O'Dea and his jockey Ivo Fry.

Good news that Stephen O'Dea has settled in to a permanent spot in Brisbane racing. Thumb Up

This week I'm giving the award to young trainer DAVID MURPHY.  Murphy was a leading apprentice of his day, and is gradually making his mark on SE Qld racing.

On Saturday his charge Kings Artist won the distance event at EF.  He then took speedster Martha's Vineyard to score another easy win on the Cushion Track.

Kings Artist has always shown ability, albeit over shorter courses.  This campaign Murphy has brought him through distances and on Saturday showed he's a handy stayer.

Yes it was a good win but why didn't David Murphy run the horse over a distance a month ago? He stepped it back in distance  from 1800m at Eagle Farm to 1600m at Doomben within a week. The horse is by a stayer in King's Theatre and has been running on in all his recent runs and now he goes for a spell?
