Have seen numerous posts of miscellaneous stuff relating to Brisbane Racing on various threads.
Think we need a thread set aside for such stuff.

Am I missing something here- the fact remains  today he is still 4 kg above the minimum in a class 6 and last start he won a class6 and was on the minimum.

The scaling of +2.5kg means that the handicapper rates the topweight in today's race (and the highest rated of the bottom weights) as 2.5kg worse than standard for this class (his last race was not scaled from memory).

In effect Eureka was up 4 - 2.5 = 1.5 kg.

Yes thanks - I've learned something today. Next question D D. How do I find out retrospectively if the Handicapper  has scaled the weights up for a race in the past. It only appears to occur on the RISA weight list but not on the acceptance list . It certainly doesn't appear in the form guide of the Sportsman or the Winning Post. Seems like it would be very useful information.

Where there's smoke file.......Pimpala Cobber EF today R6 resuming looked ok and in the market too and was never extended.Looked obvious be on me next time. beer

"Apprentice T. Bell, rider of PIMPALA COBBER, which was having its first start today from a spell, stated that he had been asked to ride the horse in a forward position if possible, but in the early stages other runners crossed him and he got further back than he would have liked. He said in the straight when he was attempting to ride it out, the horse became unbalanced several times. As he was concerned with its action, he did not ride PIMPALA COBBER out to the finish as he normally would. A post race veterinary examination of PIMPALA COBBER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. "

That stuff is certainly shown in the QRL website form.

I know this was not the question, but personally, I'd think there's nothing to be gained by searching under rocks for possible errors the handicapper might have made.  My experience is that they get it right and time is better spent answering the question whether our selection can win with the weight allotted.  Having the view that the handicapper has erred by 0.5 or 1 kg should not, IMO, affect our decision whether to back the horse or not.

Ex QLDer 350K Yearling GOLDEN KID has it's first start for Robert Smerdon at Pakenham tomorrow in the last, has decent ability, enough to take out a race like this, Nick Hall to ride.

How did this steed perform, Tev?

Terrible, but Stable spokesmen said before the race he has lots of Issue, didn't stop it being backed though.

Hmmm, OK.  It didn't have issues when it won the big Mdn at EF. nowink - but yes, it caused Pat Duff some angst, I believe.

I see Bulter used the horse was hanging excuse and escapes suspension..

One wonders if say Mr. Ganderton would've got similar treatment for the same incident using the same bs excuse.

I've no doubt the rider of DEER VALLEY would have been dealt with in the same manner, whether it was D Ganderton, S Drake, or G Boss.

Hard to be sure what was going on with Smugglers.  Haven't seen the head-on. chin

I dunno who's right and who's wrong.  A mate of mine keeps telling me how bad our horses (and jockeys) are at present.  But like me, he's getting old and cranky, and sometimes lets his prejudices over-ride his judgement.  And like me, he yearns for the days when we had to queue up to get into the track, and to fight to have a bet, and wait 15 minutes for the divvies on the Trans-Tote, etc etc.

Interesting point you make about the Maidens.  Will think more on that.  So you think our better quality horses are more likely to come through the 2YO ranks, than the Maidens as 3YO and older.

Re the local breeding industry, I would have argued that it's stronger now than ever.  Again, I dunno how we measure such things.  But we continue to be told how wonderful the incentive schemes have been.  I guess we can get some insight into that by looking at the number of locals that feature in the national black-type lists.  And there aren't a lot from my reading of things.

I have heard from several NSW trainers that the NSW ratings scheme treats their well-performed horses harshly.  We can expect to see more raiders from G Ryan, G Yorke, S Grills, et al.

Local trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith has been successful in bringing what appear to be average horses to Brisbane from NSW and Vic and winning several races.  Will have to start looking.

DD, in reply to your post on the Patinack thread moved here (see above).

I just know when you compare ratings on 2yo, 3yo or maiden races in QLD to Melbourne or Sydney, we are generally a long way off the pace. Sure we get the odd good horse that can go south and compete, but overall, our horse ranks in South East Queensland are a long way behind the South.

You only need to have a look at the sales prices of the horses kicking off their racing careers in QLD. They just arent in the the same league as down South.

And before I get told about the cheap prices you can pay to get a champion horse, by and large, the prices of yearlings must be a good gauge for how a the local industry is doing, as far as owner confidence goes.

What I mean by that is if the average price for a yearling to go on and and race in QLD is just $30k,  we must be at a disadvantage in comparison to Sydney or Melbourne where the average yearling price might be, say, $100k.

Its hard to expect SEQ to produce a large number of quality racehorses with scope to black type if we arent starting off with a reasonable number of quality yearlings each year?

PK

On the Maiden issue - and let's forget the 2YOs for now - there are probably around 15 Maiden races in a given week in SEQ?  This number is probably in excess of what's justifiable on the grounds of horse numbers and horse quality.  If  my guess of15 is around right, that's way more than what we'd have seen in days gone by  To be fair the horse population might have been somewhat less, too.  Without have ANY sense of that southern data would show, I would guess there are relatively fewer Mdn races, of a proportionately larger population of Mdns?  I'm making this point in the context of your view that SEQ Mdns are weaker than those in the south.

On the quality of the 2YOs in Qld, there's nothing clever in me deducing that we are behind in (1) number of mares (2) quality of mares (3) number of stallions (4) quality of stallions.  It follows that any sensible person would expect that SEQ 2YOs collectively, will be fewer in number, and lesser in quality, than their southern counterparts

But a question I'd like an answer on: Are the incentive schemes improving the quality of the local horses?  Or are they merely a bargaining chip?  And I'm not knocking them - if only because I hope to get a few bucks from them in due course. lol

i believe the incentive schemes such as qtis are to induce (local) owners to purchase lesser quality stock with a chance of recouping something from the bonus' available.

i have just flicked through the easter yearling sales and i only saw a couple who are eligible for the qtis, which would indicate the quality of the QLD breed is inferior to other states.  I base this on the fact that as a breeder unless you are singo or gerry your best bred stock would be heading towards inglis easter to potentially maximise returns.

From my reading of the spiel accompanying the incentive scheme propaganda, the expected outcome is a better quality local product (through breeders improving their stock).  But the outcomes in practice, could be quite different.

DD, I think QTIS 600 has many of flaws in it, and in my view, tends to favour the breeder. I don’t think the various forms of QTIS have been all that successful at increasing the quality of our stallions or broodmares.

The marketing has worked very well for the QTIS 600 concept, and we had heaps of people knocking themselves out at the QTIS 600 sale last March, and will have similar next month. But overall the quality of the horses in the flesh coupled with their pedigrees leaving much to be desired. In my view people were paying overs for a number of horses just to get a horse eligible for QTIS 600.

In this day and age of national and international racing, I don’t think we should be backed into a corner to buy the local product, if it isn’t as good as the interstate or overseas product. I think people aspire to get a horse capable of racing in stakes races.

Personally I would prefer to see the money accumulated from QTIS/QTIS 600 go into general prizemoney. Perhaps we could come up with a scheme where there were bonuses on offer for Queensland trained horses?
