Have seen numerous posts of miscellaneous stuff relating to Brisbane Racing on various threads.
Think we need a thread set aside for such stuff.

A week is certainly a long time in politics. Especially in Qld.
We have had some interesting Racing Ministers
Fraser and Big Russ are very similar

Followers of this thread cleaned up in a big way when Sydney champ Thorn Park won the Stradbroke in 2004.
Pleasing news that his progeny are showing promise in NZ.
DD that photo brings back sooooooo many happy memories.....
I'll never forget when you ordered your steak at the Brekky Creek forum party the day before that Straddy and gave your name as Mr Thorn Park and you said "thatttttts the winna ".
I hoooooooooope his 2yos do very well and we may even see one of them over here for another Straddy.
QUESTION............Has any Straddy winner been the sire of another Straddy winner?

You're memory is in good shape, RH.  I'd totally forgotten about the order at the BCH.
Re your question, I dunno of any. Can't recall too many entires winning the race.
But there'll be a chance in the next few years with Thorn Park and Show A Heart now at stud.

Wouldnt the public holidays create  enough extra revenue to more than cover the extra wages bill?

The meeting was informed that the total profit on Exhibition Wed last year was wiped out by the increased wages bill.
Other PHs would be losers.

Last week I made mention of the fact that Adrian Coome (3kg claimer) was engaged for Notre Amour (handicapped at 51.5kg).
I expressed doubt as to the amount he could claim.
The press indicated he claimed NIL of his 3 kg. I'm surprised that Stewards permitted the engagement.
I understand it's a case of "punter beware", but many punters would have expected the horse to be carrying 48.5 or thereabouts.
Stewards won't let G Colless ride 1 kg over.  Unless there are exceptional circumstances - and there might have been in the NA case - I reckon a similar criterion should be applied to apprentices.

dd I'm not sure in this instance but I'd think you would find many an apprentice unable to ride with their full claim.

Can't see anywhere that I'm blaming the jock, meynink.
I'm referring to a the general position of an apprentice being engaged when there was no hope of him/her every claiming 1 kg.

Palmer versus Coome?
Its unfortunate when you have to book them 48 hours ahead of nominations. The calendar has him riding at 52kg (Coome) so I guess we all should have known there was never going to be claim.

Both Michael and Matthew rode at EF.  I think they're down around 50 kg.

Focus on the big picture

These are unprecedented times in racing. Everyone in the industry has to think big picture and look beyond their own backyard.

Of course that's easier to say than carry out when you are staring at severe financial downturn or perhaps even loss of employment.

I've observed the full gamut of emotions from industry personnel. The mood runs from confusion, frustration, anger to despair.

There is no click-of-the-fingers solution to the equine flu disaster. The priority has to be racing product. The show must go on in terms of giving punters something to bet on. No product, no revenue to the industry.

To this end Queensland Racing Limited chairman Bob Bentley is directing his staff to explore every avenue to keep TAB meetings afloat.

This has meant some country clubs have been told their meetings have been cancelled even though most of them are in the "green" zone where there has been no horse flu cases and transport of horses now is permitted under permit.

THE effect of the country club shut-off is well encapsulated in the situation of the Gladstone Turf Club. The GTC has been informed by QRL the meetings for next Saturday and Cox Plate day (October 27) have been withdrawn.

Unfortunately these meetings are two of the most profitable for a club which has pulled itself up from near wipeout two years ago.

At least QRL has offered the country centres permission to stage betting meetings so there will be some revenue available to them.

Gladstone president David Weinert is grateful for the betting meetings, but fears for the future involvement of many owners of horses in his area.

BENTLEY conceded there has been a large amount of funds not distributed by QRL in the past month with prizemoney cuts and meeting cancellations.

But he has vowed to pour that money back into prizemoney once the flu epidemic is beaten.

The extent of how much funding from the TAB will be lost is not yet clear. And it may not be for some time with racing working in the dark until the virus ends.

"For the moment we are making sure there is a significant TAB program maintained," Bentley said.

"This is not about saving money. It's about making sure we get through this as well as possible and then look to push ahead positively when we get back to normal."

COALITION shadow racing minister Mike Horan said his industry insiders had estimated QRL had saved about $2.5 million in the past month, even allowing for an estimated downturn of $1 million in TAB returns to racing.

"It's about time the minister (Andrew Fraser) gave some leadership to the industry in this terrible situation with the horse flu," Horan said.

Press Release from Queensland Turf Club:

Temporary Stables to Assist during Equine Influenza

(EI) crisis

Queensland Turf Club Ltd (QTC) Chairman, Mr Bill Sexton, today announced the Club will build 160 temporary stables at Eagle Farm Racecourse to assist horse trainers during the Equine Influenza (EI) crisis.

As a result of the outbreak of EI and the subsequent cancellation of metropolitan racing until February 2008, trainers are faced with severe financial hardship with many struggling to meet rental payments.

On top of this, suitable horse accommodation in areas such as Hendra and Doomben has depleted due to an increased demand for housing in these suburbs.

The QTC, together with the assistance of local government representatives, received emergency approval to commence works immediately on the temporary stabling facilities.

The temporary stables will be incorporated in the existing early morning trackwork stalls, located adjacent to Nudgee Road at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

"The stables will provide much needed emergency relief for trainers in the Hendra district. "I wish to thank Councillor David McLachlan, Member for Clayfield, Tim Nicholls MP and

Campbell Newman for their compassion and understanding during such a desperate time for the local community. "The immediate commencement of the temporary stabling facilities project is attributed to local people solving problems for the local community. The Club is most appreciative of local government efforts," said Mr Sexton.

The QTC will provide the crisis accommodation to trainers rent free.

Trainers will be required to apply for the temporary stabling facilities and all applications will be assessed on a needs basis.

From AAP:
Magic Millions moves to Easter
THE Magic Millions yearling sale and race meeting featuring Queensland's richest race, the $1.5 million Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic, will be held on the Gold Coast from Easter Monday next year.
Magic Millions managing director David Chester today announced the new dates for the revamped carnival which has been put back from its traditional January timeslot because of the equine influenza (EI) outbreak.

Chester said the Easter schedule was the most suitable time for Magic Millions clients.

"This timeslot also ensures our sales and raceday will not clash with any other major racedays or thoroughbred events in the region," Chester said.

"As well as this our new dates fit favourably with our large and ever-increasing international buying bench.

"The new dates will also provide owners and trainers with more time to prepare their horses for the rich Magic Millions raceday at the Gold Coast - the only raceday of its kind in the world and the richest in Queensland."

The carnival will kick off with the $4.1 million Magic Millions raceday which includes the Two-Year-Old Classic (1200m) and Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) for three-year-olds on Easter Monday, March 24.

The first session of the Magic Millions sale will commence later that night.

Nine sessions have been programmed for the 2008 sale, running from March 24 to March 27 followed by a two-day break before recommencing with session five on March 30.

The sale will continue until the final session on April 3.

Chester said Magic Millions had planned to reveal its revised carnival at a later date but had been forced into announcing the decision today following pressure from clients.

"Magic Millions intended to delay the announcement of rescheduled dates for the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale and raceday as long as possible for obvious reasons," he said.

"But over the last few days our company has come under a great deal of pressure by domestic and international buyers as well as breeders to end the speculation."

Sydney's William Inglis and Son premier yearling sale is usually held at Easter but has been put back to April next year due to the EI crisis.

Sydney's autumn racing carnival is also expected to be delayed by four to five weeks.

Meanwhile, Magic Millions announced it would assist breeders and vendors in the lead-up to the 2008 sale by offering up to four weeks complimentary stabling at the Gold Coast.

Yes, Dbn on Dec 1 and 8 and EF on 15th.  Horses from GC etc can race at those meetings, I understand.
Takeover Target and Natural Destiny are likely runners in a $100,000 race at Dbn.  They can come from NSW no problems, but I think there's a requirement for 14 days' quarantine before they return.

Talked with several of the trainers at EF this morning and it's fair to say they're bucking their brands off with the  return to racing imminent.
What a resilient group these people are.Few appreciate the emotional and financial stresses that beset their businesses, yet all seem happy and carrying no grudges.  Most have been able to keep their staff on the payroll.  Full credit for that.
Rob Heathcote has had another double injection of enthusiasm for Brisbane racing.  He's fielding enquiries from prospective clients in the South and reports that several of his stable stars are ready to start serious work.  (I didn't ask about Malta.)
The out-of-town stables will have a head-start on the locals for the first few weeks.  Regardless it will be a big celebration when the gates open at Doomben on Dec 1.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Birthday change a recipe for trouble
by Bart Sinclair

A MOOTED transfer of the Queen's Birthday public holiday from June to October would mean another change to the winter carnival program.

If the State Government proceeds with a plan to change the public holiday, the traditional Brisbane Cup June race date would be deleted from the winter carnival in 2009 and beyond.

Queensland Turf Club chief executive Stephen Ferguson said his club had been informed of the proposal by Queensland Racing Limited and was looking at options.

"Ultimately it is QRL's decision but you can see there is going to be a problem juggling the expectations of all race clubs involved in the winter carnival," Ferguson said.

"There are currently six main winter meetings shared – three at Eagle Farm and three at Doomben.

"If you take one away by removing the Queen's Birthday holiday then you have five meetings or push the later dates at Ipswich, Tattersall's and the Sunshine Coast back a week.

"You can see the very real possibility of a squabble between the QTC and the Brisbane Turf Club over the allocation of race dates.

"Under a merger, it wouldn't be an issue at all. This is a clear and simple example of why the clubs should merge.

"It's incredible to think there is now a prospect of more energy being wasted on race dates instead of getting on with business."

Public holiday race meetings, once regarded as good money-spinners for metropolitan race clubs, have largely delivered mediocre financial returns over the past 20 years.

And in a lot of cases, meeting on public holidays have been run at a significant loss.

The QTC has to pay staff at double time-and-a-half rates on Brisbane Cup day.

Chief operations manager Malcolm Tuttle said the QRL was awaiting further advice from the State Government before deciding on any changes to the winter dates, starting from 2009

I am interested in keeping replays of all Brisbane, SC, GC, Toowoomba and Ippy races. I've got Foxtel IQ but would prefer to store them on my DVD player or CDs.

What's the best way of getting and storing replays without having access to the races live or alternatively having to sit through all the races from other venues in the Sky replay show.

I note TVN's replay coverage of Brisbane is too unreliable for my liking.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

You mention your DVD "player".  Do you mean player or recorder?
I have Panasonic DVD recorders with hard drives.  (Don't even consider a recorder without a HD.)
You need to be able to edit your recordings, to cut out stuff you don't want, so the logic of the software on the recorder is critical, IMO.  I like the Panasonic stuff, but maybe that's coz I'm used to it.
You can get most of what you want in the Today's Racing Tonight program, say 2am to 5am.  Just chop it up into the meetings you're interested in.
For GC and Twmba on Saturdays, you'll need to record the total day's Sky coverage, then chop out the guff.
Once a week I make a CD as a back-up.  Usually get 7 or 8 meetings on a disk no problems.
Definitely worth doing.  You'll never have to work again.

Yep dubbledee it's a Panasonic DVD recorder with its own hard drive.

At present it is rigged up so I can only record free to air TV on the DVD recorder - the rest is on IQ along with a lot of other stuff like the Cricket World Cup final which has been there since April!

Will need to work out how to record it on to the DVD and make CD copies.

Thanks for your assistance dubbledee. Will try and make a few changes and let you know how I go.

Much to my excitement I think I have rigged up my DVD to record from Foxtel. Thanks for your help guys.

I am grateful that luckily I have Panasonic equipment which made the whole process a lot simpler than it otherwise may have been and a Scart to Scart cable has enabled me to get it going.

There is some great info on this at the website www.ibece.org

Now I have to learn to edit my recordings.

I have one further question - do they show Toowoomba replays on the Sky race replay program - I think it is called Today's Racing Tonight?

Poor old Ron Goltz rides 5 winners at Toowoomba last saturday and never got a mention.

I realise it is ONLY Toowoomba but surely 5 winners on a 8 race card deserves some coverage.

Well done Ron

Rest assured dubbledee if I spot anything, odds on it won't have escaped your eagle eye.

Will be putting some thoughts on the thread for sure - the Brisbane racing ones are my faves out of the entire forum and I enjoy contributing.

Can't guarantee winners though!

Up and running finally.

3 I have noticed from the Doomben meetings, probably fairly obvious:

FOOLISH from 1 December - got home very well but not the most tractable conveyance with a worrying tendency to miss the kick. If things go his way though he is very classy.

EASY ROCKER - started very short the other day over an unsuitable distance but hit the line hard.

MYNDOS - has had plenty of chances before EI but got home pretty well.

All Toowoomba based I think and they could all clash next start I suppose. Dunno what I would do then!

Will be digging deeper into replays from SC and Toowoomba in due course.

They can play up their winnings on Hey Elvis if it accepts for EF on Saturday.

DD,
This first starter ran a really nice race at Yarra Valley on December 1st. He missed the start a little before booting up to share the lead. He was crossed mid race but battled on well to run 4th beaten about 2.5 lengths. The class of race wasn't great but he showed enough to suggest he can win soon.

Saturday's meeting at Eagle Farm will be the first to be run without the crossing at the 600 metres.
It's fair to say that jockeys previously rode their races to accommodate the crossing.
Will races be run at different speeds now?  Will jockeys start their runs earlier?

I would probably have bet money that the record at Flemington for the 3200m would have been faster than Eagle Farm
Eagle Farm -3.15.7
Flemington-3.16.3
Therefore that proves the best horses run up here (Only joking )

Looking at the records for Toowoomba does this mean West of Hollywood broke the track record last Friday?

According to the information on the website the track record for 900m at Toowoomba is 51.15. According to the race results on the Queensland Racing website WOH ran 51.01, but there is no notation suggesting that horse broke the track record.

Interesting.

Done a little digging and the club's website has more up to date information than race rate - but you will note last updated 27 September 2005!

I am astonished that this race club does not have this basic info up to date on its website. I will check the other club's websites and report back.

I reckon they would generally run about three or four 900m races at Toowoomba each year.  It is only due to EI they seem to be running a lot of short races in QLD at the moment just to get the ball rolling.  So the 900m record at Toowoomba is not the most prestigious
The caller said that Azzaland had either broken the 900m course record or gone very close to it when he won 2 runs back clocking 50.65.  West of Hollywood ran 51.01 so he cannot lay claim to being the fastest squib at Toowoomba

I emailed them and and they were very good in that they they even rang me to say they fixed things up.
I noticed a lot of the clubs don't update their web sites very often. I thought that in this day and age that it would be very important.

QTC has its records up to date on the web by the look of it.

According to the Toowoomba website the 900m record is held by Stylish Qualo at 50.92.

Maybe they only update when new records are set. Still it can leave people confused if it is not updated regularly as they cannot be certain if the info on the site is current.

I am happy to be corrected but my research of the various SEQ race clubs websites on track records reveals the following:

Eagle Farm - yes
Doomben - yes plus race records of notable races held there

Gold Coast - nothing I could find
Ipswich - yes
Sunshine Coast - yes
Toowoomba - yes but apparently not up to date

If my research is correct, Gold Coast and Toowoomba should get their act together on this issue IMHO as this info is important to a number of punters.

One further point - is there anything wrong in putting class records on the websites either - this would be really useful.

I really think that one of Australia's biggest downfalls is their inability to take up the the slack in the informations stakes in regards to racing information available to the punter ... i would love to see something simular to what Hong Kong has available on it's racing website.
It has race replays, audio , video ,instantly updated results , horse , trainer information and the list goes on.
Now i know it would be a big ask for clubs to have all the information available to the punter that the HKJC has on it's site , but i would love to see some of the clubs take up the challenge to implement some of the great features available in Hong Kong.
Not sure if it falls under QR racing juristriction or the individual clubs themselves to implement something like this ... but it surely would be Great

So true MagiC HK have it all over Aus in a lot of ways. The thing with them is the HKJC get to keep all the revenue from betting turnover whereas Australia has created laws ensuring racing cant get financial control over itself. Work that out!!
That gives HK a huge amount of money to spend ensuring racing is clean, genuine and well presented. Meanwhile we have to fight tooth and nail to get any form of assistance through the EI crisis. Something has to change if we are to survive and thrive>

Everyone always raves about the quality of HK racing etc etc.  But if HK races on a Sunday the Australian betting pools are not greatly different to the pools for Sunshine Coast or the Victorian or NSW provincials run on those days
So the punters voting with their wallets are saying HK racing is no better than the Australian Sunday provincial fare and I agree with their assessment.
I will admit the HKJC website is impressive but it is not making Australian punters bet any more on it than they do on Aussie racing without the fancy websites.  So why would any Australian club spend money and time on something that won't bring in any extra cash?
I would much prefer to bet on Sunshine Coast on a Sunday than smoggy Sha Tin

Do you work with the banks? Sounds like their logic Dont spend money unless it is absolutely necessary. Just so you know though mug most smart punters which are those that have the capability of betting on more than local racing dont bet with our local TABS, unless they are getting well overs which is generally unlikely as their bets would eliminate the overs. Also HK racing is not exactly promoted very well by Aussies. For 5 of the last 7 years Aussie has had the totally dominant trainer over there yet I havent seen his name mentioned in any local press. Can you explain that?

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Stathi Katsidis to get serious
by Bart Sinclair

STATHI Katsidis believes a move to a Brisbane base will be a catalyst to a more dedicated approach to his riding career in 2008.

Katsidis is living in his home town, Toowoomba, to work with his personal trainer, former Clydesdales rugby league player Darren Ingram.

Before he went to Melbourne for the spring to partner Gold Edition, Katsidis had been living on the Gold Coast for several years.

"I think a change of scenery will be good. Brisbane is the right place for me. I'll be riding at the two city tracks and have only an hour to get to the Sunshine Coast on Sundays," he said.

Katsidis wants to form an alliance with Deagon-based trainers Shaun Dwyer and Steele Ryan.

Dwyer is open to the idea of Katsidis riding some of the stable horses but has one condition.

"Stathi will have to put in an effort at trackwork. Some of my clients are keen for him to ride for them," Dwyer said.

Katsidis has to convince everyone he is prepared to put in some hard work for an extended period.

He has a history of being easily distracted. In the past racing season Katsidis missed six months for various reasons, mostly weight-related.

He has just served a one-month penalty for testing positive to a diuretic during the Melbourne spring carnival.

During the break Katsidis let his weight climb and, under Ingram, he has had to work hard to trim off the excess.

"I am doing a lot of interval training in two one-hour sessions a day," he said.

"I tend to get very muscle sore with the workouts and have followed the footballers' idea of having ice baths to hasten the recovery."

Katsidis, who rode a winner at Ipswich on Sunday and has six rides at the Sunshine Coast today, is able to take 56kg mounts but plans to reduce that level soon.

His Sunshine Coast rides include one for Dwyer on the Octagonal five-year-old Roswald in the Signwave Maiden (1000m).

Roswald has started only once previously, for a close third in the "return to Deagon" meeting on September 14.

"He's a horse who has a long history of leg problems and we've had to be very patient to get him to the post," Dwyer said.

Four of the Katsidis rides are from the Bruce McLachlan stable, including Mr Blonde in the Thompson Building Services Maiden (1400m).

I was pleased to catch an interview on Sky, between Alan Thomas and the high-profile Brisbane punter of the 1970s - Eddie Birchley, aka "The Fireman".  It's probably quite old, but it's worth a watch if you see it programmed.
I think it was mid-70s when Birchley hit the headlines as a fearless punter on short-priced 2yos.  Birchley was a victim of his success.  His movements were predictable.  If there was an odds-on pop in a 2yo at Randwick or Flemington, he'd fly down from GC and, on cue, would cut a swathe through the local ring betting in cash.
Birchley indicated to Thomas that it was the defeat of Danish Dancer at Randwick by Sheil Sail that led to a change of strategy in his punting.  DD was about 4s-on, and Birchley reportedly place $105,000 on the favourite.  Thomas was waiting for Birchley to say more, but there was no need.  Birchley's face did the talking.  He then expressed the view that today's control of racing was far more effective than when he was hitting the headlines.
Now in his late 70s, Birchley remains a GC resident and continues to bet on the neddies.  He limits his activities to around 100 bets a year, sometimes outlaying 5-figure amount.
Undoubtedly, someone who'll always have a place in Australia's racing folklore.

Mr Birchley - by his own account - had $208,000 on speedster Caboul when it won in Melbourne.  Was Flemington, I think.  I remember the day clearly, and hearing Bert Bryant make a comment about the plunge.
Birchley had intended to place just $200,000 on the horse, but when he went back to hand over the cash for his bets at the various bookies' stands he found out his error.  So $8,000 was "on the nod".
The horse bolted in at about 2s-on from memory.  I don't think it raced long, but went to stud, I'd say.

Astute Cranbourne trainer John Collins is a bit of a mystery man.  He doesn't seem to have a lot of horses, but every so often turns up at SC with a smart one, usually well-bred.
Being the trainer of Devastating would be enough to drive a person to distraction - but the horse did race well yesterday.
On Saturday he's represented at Doomben by 6yo Thunder Gulch gelding, United.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Weather determines Hebitda's path
MICK Mair is keeping a close watch on the southeast Queensland weather as he considers a venue for his rising talent Hebitda over the next two days.

And opposition trainers are watching Mair's movements closely with no real zeal to tackle Hebitda.

Mair has accepted with Hebitda in the Magic Millions Trophy Plate (1000m) at Toowoomba today and the Equipment Funding Plate (1110m) at Doomben tomorrow.

Hebitda is likely to start an odds-on favourite if he goes to Toowoomba, the option favoured by Mair last night.

"I'll check the track conditions again in the morning but I am leaning towards Toowoomba if things stay the same as they are now," Mair said.

"The horse has done well but I don't want to go all the way up there just to run on a wet track."

The forecast is for showers to continue over the next four or five days, but both venues were in pretty good order late yesterday.

There are four youngsters dually engaged at Toowoomba and Doomben.

The other three are Saratoga and stablemates Que and Rufescent. Saratoga's trainer Ron Maund admitted he would prefer to dodge Hebitda.

When the pair clashed at Eagle Farm on December 15, Hebitda swept past Satatoga inside the 200m and raced away to win by more than four lengths.

"He looked a bit too big and too good," Maund conceded.

Mark Webb is another who will be doing a last-minute check on track conditions and the weather pattern before finalising plans for his two-year-olds.

"At the moment I would say Rufescent and Rocket Gal will run in Toowoomba and Que will line up at Doomben," Webb said.

"Hyde Park may be scratched from the Toowoomba race, which would be his third run in a fortnight.

"Hebitda looks hard to beat whereever he runs but it's amazing how horses can find it hard to win at their first run on the Toowoomba track.

Quizzical will be having her first look at Clifford Park in the $100,000 XXXX Trophy (1100m).

Her trainer Bruce Hill will be saddling runners – stablemate Symtina is in race three – for the first time in his own name, although he previously had taken runners to the track in his role as stable foreman for trainer Gerald Ryan.

"I know it has a record as a graveyard for visiting horses but Quizzical Lady is a very tough filly who puts in every time," Hill said.

Trainer Bruce McLachlan is giving Key Bar Nights a strong winning chance, despite her outside draw at 17.

"I thought she was a Melbourne spring filly until the horse flu ruled that out," McLachlan said.

"And she will be hard to beat in this with any sort of luck from the draw."

For reasons best known to the decision maker, Eagle Farm has been chosen as the venue for the Midweek Comp.
I have therefore had a reason to have a sqizz at the fields, and the first question that cause a furrowing of my brow was
Don't many horses win races in Queensland?
Three maiden races with fields with upwards of 85 starters.
Okay, you jokers know the form, how about having a lash at the Midweek Comp?

Most mid-weekers in Brisbane will programme 3 or 4 Maidens.  However, the current programming is influenced to a degree by EI.  QRL is doing its best to put the races on to suit the available horses.  They set up their races some weeks back based on the numbers and class of horses which trainers advised would be available.
(I can answer you without fear of contradiction that horses DO win races in Qld.  And about twice as many more run placings.)

QR look to move Saturday's Gold Coast meeting due to wet weather

c/ Courier Mail

Qld Racing will look at moving Saturday's Gold Coast meeting to avoid predicted wet weather.

Chief steward Reid Sanders said QR racing manager Paul Brennan would be involved in any talks on a possible transfer to Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast.

"The problem is that everywhere seems to be getting the rain," Sanders said.

The forecast is for rain to continue on the Gold Coast until Friday. A meeting scheduled for yesterday was called off because the track was unfit for racing.

Sanders, who will monitor the track daily, said the fact there would be new ground because of a relocated rail would help.

Acting track manager Steve Andrews has no doubt the meeting will go ahead if there is a break in the weather.

"All we need is 24 hours without rain. It dries very quickly," Andrews said.

The rail was out 6m for the meeting yesterday but will be moved back to half a metre on Saturday.

"The inside 2.5m has not been raced on for four weeks. The other three metres have been used at meetings since," Andrews said.

He said a section between the 800m and the 400m was the main cause for concern because it was sheltered from the drying winds by a shopping complex.

Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich has no fears about starting Ghetto Blaster on a heavy track and is eager to see how he performs.

The vastly improved Ghetto Blaster is unbeaten this campaign and looks the main threat to Mitanni in the $100,000 Goldmarket Handicap (1300m).

"Ghetto Blaster loves the mud. The horse could not be going any better," Heinrich said.

She also has Spur Me On nominated for the feature race but he hates wet tracks and will not run in those conditions.

Heinrich said Glen Colless had booked himself for the ride on Ghetto Blaster a month ago and would make the 53kg limit without drama.

"I don't know how Mitanni handles the wet but he will have 61kg and that is a big difference," Heinrich said.

Mitanni is a noted wet-track performer and Shane Scriven was kind to him when he scored last start because he had the race won halfway up the straight.

Ghetto Blaster is likely to be rested after he runs in the Goldmarket and Heinrich has ambitions to run him in the Stradbroke (1400m) at Eagle Farm this winter.

Umaprince's trainer Mick Hicks is hoping for a break in the weather, because the six-year-old does not handle wet tracks.

I see in the paper that Brett Cavanough is bringing a team of horses to stable up here at Eagle Farm. Some of which could be racing as early as next week end.
Jason Holder is back on the Gold Coast after a stint in South Aussie. I doubt if he will have a meeting to go to tomorrow but stranger things have happened.
Ron Maund and the owners are tossing up as to who will ride Gold Edition. It is between Stathi Katsidis and Jim Cassidy according to Ron..GE is due to return on the 2nd Feb at Flemington over the 1000m Lightning.

I was chatting with the Cronins, owners of Rockem at EF on Wednesday.  He's out of  Telltina, who's they owned .  They have raced several of her offspring, too, and raced T's mother, Bernalla.
Did we know that TELLEM had died of botulism?  I guess it would have been reported, but in case it hasn't, RIP TELLEM.

Sorry to hear about Tellem especially dying of botulism - particularly awful. He was a very honest sprinter and a great weight carrier.

I liked the way Rockem won on Wed and Katsidis completely outrode Byrne IMHO but Jim learnt his lesson by Bernardo's race.

Re the Goldmarket Ghetto Blaster was actually scratched last year (drew 16) and the race was won by Shepishir. Have not heard about Shepishir for awhile and was wondering about the horse.

Late Saturday evening, four young lives were tragically lost in a semi-trailer collision on the Cunningham Highway near Warwick, just a few km ATCF from Luskin's and Smissy's property.
Names have now been released.  One of the victims was 20yo Nick Nolan, a member of one of Qld's long-established racing families, and grandson of one of my best mates.
RIP young Nick.

Nerissa Cowell plans interstate shuttle

Nerissa Cowell has been granted a licence to train horses from a Warwick Farm stable, possibly to open as early as next week.

However, Cowell has no intention of turning her back on Brisbane racing.

She will continue to run an on-course stable at Eagle Farm under the management of Don Brown, formerly a long-serving senior staffer with John Hawkes in Brisbane.

Cowell, 31, and her partner Neil Jolly initially will spend a lot of time at Warwick Farm but she will shuttle regularly.

The flagbearers of the Sydney operation will be Fiveoclockshadow and Son Of Dane, the two horses Cowell took to Sydney on the eve of the equine influenza outbreak.

Both horses have been stuck in NSW since August despite Cowell's repeated attempts to gain a DPI permit to transport them back to Queensland.

"I think we will go there (Sydney) with a nice team, mainly of unraced young horses which we think have ability," said Cowell, who has been training for seven years.

"To be honest, the costs of training in Sydney are slightly cheaper than Brisbane.

"It's a good time to give it a shot. We have those two horses which are up to the standard if they come up and others who have the potential.

"But I'd never give away Brisbane for the foreseeable future. We have some very good clients here."

Fiveoclockshadow, as a result of a paddock accident in which he injured a hock, followed by horse flu problems, has raced only seven times – most recently 13 months ago.

The Langfuhr stallion's two wins both came in listed races. He was successful in the Doomben Slipper in May 2006 at his third appearance and then took out the UCI Stakes over 1410m at Flemington in the spring of that year.

Son Of Dane has not started since finishing second in the Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm in July.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Big offer knocked back
by Tony Meany

LIGHTLY raced Mr Heartbreaker will take the first step in trying to repay a $1 million debt at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Owners Hoss and Gillian Heinrich rejected a $1 million offer from Hong Kong for Mr Heartbreaker and the decision clearly delighted Gillian, who trains the horse.

"I never took any part in the negotiations but I am glad he is staying with us," Heinrich said.

"If Hoss had taken the money he would have only spent it on trying to get other horses who might not be as good."

Mr Heartbreaker will run in the $50,000 Class 6 (1200m) and a win would return his connections $32,000.

Jockey Ric McMahon has been engaged to ride him.

Stablemate Ghetto Blaster will also stay in Brisbane after the couple also refused a $1 million offer for him from Hong Kong.

Ghetto Blaster has been sent to a spelling paddock for two weeks.

Heinrich said she would concentrate on trying to win major sprints with the gelding this winter.

"I will nominate him for the Stradbroke but the sprints are very appealing. We might stretch him out to the Stradbroke trip (1400m)," Heinrich said. "He is a different horse since we gelded him."

Trainer Brian Gentle is making a name for himself.  Bart Sinclair wrote this par in today's The Courier-Mail:

Previously ridden for speed, Falvalady now is being ridden patiently and she found the line with great purpose for in-form jockey Jason Holder to post a margin of a widening three lengths.

The biggest grin at the track belonged to Gold Coast trainer Brian Gentle who celebrated his first city win with Sir Teles ($5.50), then added another victory with Fools Rush In ($2.80).

Fools Rush In looked beaten on numerous occasions in the home straight but found extra under pressure to nose out Thunder Beach ($6) in the City Pacific Plate (1660m).

Gentle, 36, has come through an excellent education in his craft. Originally from Orange, he spent time as understudy to Bruce Hill in running the Gerald Ryan stable at the Gold Coast and briefly branched out on his own.

"I couldn't get enough horses on my books so I gave away training to spend time in Sydney," Gentle said.

"I had 12 months with Gai Waterhouse and then 2½ years with John O'Shea. Last March I decided to take out my own licence again."

Gentle has steadily built his numbers up to 22 horses in work. His past 11 runners have produced six winners, including yesterday's double.

Gentle's smart galloper Noreil has accepted for two races over the weekend.

Sinclair also wrote a feature on GC trainer Kelly Doughty in today's press after her win with Falvalady at Doomben.  She's another who's a very talented operator, and whose runners should be watched very closely, IMO.
Doughty has forum idol Raincoat accepted for SC on Sunday.  The poor horse cannot draw a barrier.  He has 20 this time.  It might not matter up there.  Not sure he's a wet-tracker, but he's a smart galloper.
For those interested, the dam of Raincoat is a half sister to Starmaker, from memory.

Radecker gets 6 wks over slow ride

c/ Courier Mail

Qld's leading female apprentice Mandy Radecker yesterday was suspended for six weeks for failing to give her mount every chance in an Eagle Farm race.

Radecker, 21, pleaded not guilty to the charge of not showing enough vigour on Classic Force from soon after the start to the 600m when a distant last.

Chief steward Reid Sanders also said she should have been vigorous from the 400m to the 250m in the 1200m Maiden on January 11.

Classic Force, having his second start after tailing out at his debut, ran a $2.60 favourite and was beaten almost nine lengths in finishing seventh to Edward Bear.

"I was surprised he ran favourite because he had shown me nothing and I have no idea who backed him," Classic Force's trainer Pat Duff said.

"I support Mandy's claim that she did nothing wrong and she will be appealing."

Classic Force, who was bred and is raced by Gold Coast businessman Warwick Carter, is out of former class racemare Real Force.

Radecker won the final race at Eagle Farm last Saturday on Fabiarna and recently returned from a successful riding stint in Adelaide. She had been on loan to Leon MacDonald and her riding indentures have been extended to June this year after she applied for special consideration.

Last season Radecker spent four months on the sidelines after a fall at Eagle Farm but still finished runner-up to Ric McMahon in the apprentices' premiership.

I thought Fangles did a pretty good job to win the last at Ipswich yesterday.

As a 3yo lumped with 58kg he was conceding weight to most of his older rivals in what was a fair C2 field.

He worked hard to get the lead when Barbres made a pest of himself and they went out in a hot 34.8 for the first 600m. Really the race was set up for backmarkers had they been good enough.

Fangles was entitled to get tired in the straight which he did but had enough in reserve to win by a long neck.

The overall time was a fairly smart 1.11.12.

Incidentally in his last win on 5 January the horse ran the fast last 600m ever recorded in a 1200m race at Ipswich on a heavy track - 35.63 (according to the Racing and Sports website) when he was ridden on the pace where I think he is even more effective than when he leads.

If the RaS website is to be believed he ran a class record yesterday but I don't know if this is correct or not.

He has done a fine job this prep and has good formlines around him with an excellent second to Woody'n'Buzz at the Gold Coast a few runs back. Strong form indeed.

Will be interesting to see what the trainer does with him - I guess it will depend on how he gets over this run.

Personally, I reckon he has done enough this prep and has earned a freshen up and hopefully will come back bigger and better next time in.

Stewards Report – Mandy Radecker

Deagon Offices –Tuesday 22 January 2008

Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of CLASSIC FORCE from Race 3 at the Queensland Turf Club meeting on Friday, 11 January 2008.

Apprentice M. Radecker was found guilty of a charge under AR135(b) and (c) in that as the rider of CLASSIC FORCE she failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures from shortly after the start until approaching the 600m by failing to apply sufficient pressure to CLASSIC FORCE to maintain a position closer to the second last horse, namely, SPARK OF MAGIC. This failure resulted in CLASSIC FORCE losing ground from the remainder of the field.

This, in the Stewards opinion failed to give CLASSIC FORCE full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field.

Stewards further particularised that between the 400m and the 50m, Apprentice Radecker failed to ride CLASSIC FORCE with sufficient vigour when it was reasonable and permissible for her to do so to ensure that she had given CLASSIC FORCE the full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field.

Apprentice Radecker’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 weeks, commencing midnight Sunday, 27 January 2008 and expiring on midnight Sunday, 9 March 2008.

Possible correction to my earlier post re Fangles. I was relying on info on the Qld Racing Website results for the sectionals it indicates 36.32 for last 600m.

However, I have reason to believe the last 600m of the race was covered in 34.80 and they pulled up in front midway. The SMH today says last 600m 34.8s. Whichever way it was a fast time for the track and grade.

This takes just a tiny gloss off the win IMHO (though still a very good one) - makes the run of Wide Open as the second placegetter more meritorious. Could be a decent form race nevertheless.

Katsidis' ride on Sweet As was just that.

Atomic Huss put in a good performance first up there yesterday - just missing. A classy galloper.

Curtain's run was very good.  She was one of the last out, but Byrne got her close to the rails ahead of a few after they'd gone 200.  She was pretty cramped till the 700 when Byrne brought her out and she was close to the widest runner on straightening.  She made a quick run at them and looked a winning chance till she died the last 50.  That wasn't surprising given the run she'd made. (The Sunshine Man's run was good too.)
I think she'll handle a mile or so.  Is she in somewhere over the weekend?

someone bump that thread that says Sharee Drake is the worst rider in Aus.
Her ride on Dell Amby in the last at the Coast was nothing more than incompetant.
Had the horse sitting outside the fav 1/1 and the 2nd fav(Sir Teles)3 wide after 300-400m, then for reasons only a woman could understand she eases back 2 lengths for no reason whatsoever to leave a massive gap for it to get in.
Sir Teles gets the perfect run and goes on to win, Dell Amby spends the length of the straight going sideways looking for runs instead of getting the perfect run.
But completely my fault for backing her in the first place.
I love the Gold Coast. The trainers wake up quick smart. It's next start today with Sheree long gone.

One of Australia's greatest-ever riders sent around a smart youngster at Eagle Farm today.
Anabaa colt Formula One Racer looked just every bit a stayer of the future in winning his Maiden on debut for Mick Dittman.  The books were well primed to the horse's ability and the $2 wasn't on offer for long.
Desley Forster might pursue a Derby path.  Out of a Zabeel mare, that doesn't look too ambitious right now.

Why? Because the even tempo he ran today, doing all that was needed to hold the rest at bay.  He's been patiently handled and has perfect conformation.  He'll run a lot further than 1200 m. How fast, we'll find out later in the year.

One of the more interesting runners at Doomben tomorrow is injury prone Romantic Journey which is in Race 6 on the card.

A former Victorian, this horse appears to have good credentials holding a decision of G1 winner Rubiscent albeit in a Class 2 at Mornington in November 2006.

It hasn't raced since. Now a 5yo with the Guy stable he is up against a reasonable field including Easy Rocker. Tough to come back from such a long lay-off and who knows if he is still the same horse.

I note the horse is out of Glenview.

I wonder if that is the same Glenview that Bart Cummings trained quite a long while ago which from memory won a black type F&M race.

Coin, I see it is riden by Ric McMahon. Seems a good kid.
I knew his Dad when he was a flying winger for North's Rugby league side. A nicer bloke you would never meet.

"Up and running finally.

Will be digging deeper into replays from SC and Toowoomba in due course."

Think you'd be in front on these predictions mainly courtesy of Myndos - won twice placed once (at fair odds) - though Easy Rocker has won since he has also gone under a couple of times. Foolish raced once since I think and was never in it.

Will look to update more regularly.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Queensland Racing boss says country cuts necessary
by Chris Bassani
QUEENSLAND Racing Limited chairman Bob Bentley says he is "comfortable" with the proposed 2008-09 race date cuts which have angered and united country racing associations.
Country tracks are to lose 46 dates while the Caloundra cushion track will gain 17 TAB meetings on Fridays.

The QRL appeasement offered is a $1000 prizemoney increase for all races and free racing for horses which finish fourth and back at a cost of $350,000.

Bentley said the QRL was happy to view CRA submissions, due on February 15, if they "improve the racing schedule, have better ideas or can produce better results, but not submissions that pose what is best for their club and area rather than what is in the best interest of racing in Queensland.

"Cuts are made around sufficient horse populations or those clubs who don't perform or fit the pattern of racing we are trying to achieve," he said.

Asked if a CRA united front against the proposals would be dismissed, Bentley said: "No, we will continue to make decisions in the best interests of racing."

QR will ultimately make the decision but will do it in consultation with the country racing council (QCRC)

"Under the proposal more money goes to the country, it will be more competitive and people will just have to travel," Bentley said.

Asked if there will be any further cuts, he said: "No further plans but it is balanced to the number of horses available in a particular area . . . but professional racing is professional and non-TAB is hobby racing isn't it?

"We pay out an extra six per cent on top of the legislated seven per cent, we have it well balanced at the moment."

Five years ago the QR(L) slashed 200 country race dates.

All eight CRAs believe their fight to retain dates will be tough, not because of their conviction of their own product but because of their relationship with QRL

Angela Unsworth, from North West QRA, has gathered more than 500 signatures on a petition she will present to Racing Minister Andrew Fraser.

"In 2004 they set up CRAs so we could make decisions on dates, prizemoney and programs. It doesn't happen. We get dictated to and when you ring them (QRL) they either don't return your call or just laugh," Unsworth said."

Michael Kelly, of Eastern Downs RA said: "We have become merely social organisers, they control everything. We make proposals and never get an answer.

"We have to make $50,000 a year profit for the year for Dalby to break even but they keep cutting dates. Clubs are never given anything, the QRL just keep taking away.

"QRL's charter is to look after racing in Queensland not just in one area."

Central West RA's Gary Peoples said "Since the 2003 race date cuts, prizemoney in town has skyrocketed while the country has stayed the same. Why should we lose more dates to get some more money?"

"Bentley says he is doing it in the best interest of racing in Queensland. It is the best interest of the southeast corner and his own agenda. He cuts meetings, we lose horses, trainers, jockeys from the area and end up with less. Then he cuts again because we haven't enough horses. It's a joke."

The North West QRA, South East QRA, Eastern Downs RA, Capricornia RA and Central West RA have a submission voicing no date cuts.

Leichardt RA and Far North QRA will hold meetings this week, the latter indicating opposition.

Downs RA Peter Flynn says his association has missed any cuts in the proposal.

"I would support clubs in whatever way possible to retain dates. But some clubs have sat pat and not value added, they are their own worst enemy," he said.

A few from the weekend:

Doomben:

Phebetay - good second to Black Minx

One Eyed - racing well. Close second to Heart of the Citi and beat the others easily.

Craiglea Charm - first up and another second placegetter this time behind Imajoker in fast time. Suspect it will be a good form race and saw Sir Sensible sneaking up right at the end - he could also be in for a good campaign as could Romantic Journey if he stays together as his run wasn't bad either.

Sir Coup - good run behind Bearcountry which shows he is in form following his excellent second to Dance Girl Dance in a very strong C3 at Ipswich recently.

Gold Coast

Malesia - won a 2yo maiden over 1000m running faster time than the C3. Showed a nice turn of speed at the end.

Perilous Princess - close second to Tootsie Zynsky. Time was good (maybe a class rec?) and they gapped the others.

Lady Red - this horse is from Victoria I think and is better known over more ground. However excellent run first up - three wide the trip and only went down narrowly to the in form Sir Teles.

Toowoomba

Form is dodgy at that track as there seems to be a clear fast lane on the fence and if you are not in the first 2 or 3 turning for home mostly you won't figure.

One horse that ran home well against the bias was Urban Lass in Race 1 behind the in form Sedan (which was well ridden by Kai as made use of it to get the lead and booted on the turn).

Sunshine Coast

Very heavy track and small fields the order of the day. Not much caught the eye.

Sharing The Magic got home nicely in race 3.

Tune Up Tuesday in race 5 ran a good third and never looked comfortable in the going.

Kinjirock seemed to baulk or at least never get clear room to stretch out in race 6.

Botero held on well in the small field behind Rapid Reason. Rapid Reason ran a good race in town the previous week.

But overall these are ordinary horses and will require astute placement if we are to make a dollar.

From the previous SC meeting I thought Key To Happiness hit the line nicely in Race 4 on the wrong part of the track.

No dubbledee - just wanted to have a look at him. Right about the odds and was probably worth the gamble.

Nice win and didn't shirk at any stage even when under siege. Could be more in store for him down the track.

Having watched quite a few races closely from there now, that Toowoomba track seems to be a two lane highway.

Horses that have performed well in town like Shale Shaker and Ms Marju struggled last night because they are backmarkers and could not secure runs in the better going one or two off the rail.

Form to and from there must be treated with abundant caution unfortunately.

Separately, was there a leader bias at Doomben yesterday? Except for the 2yo race, it seems you had to be up there.

Yep - his suspension is totally academic now.

I don't agree with those who defended his ride on Doug's Mate as it showed a complete lack of judgment. Still, staying or middle distance races can be tricky and not just for apprentices especially on backmarkers.

He has ridden some excellent winners round the provincials and in town and IMHO is a promising young rider. I hope he recovers well and comes back better than ever continuing to ride in SEQ.

Have just seen the race, and I'd have to say that anyone who's not looking at Atapi as a genuine Stradbroke hope should move to another gambling venture.  It was a win and half, matched only by Byrne's ride.
Brave effort by classy sprinting mare Devil Inside to go down in the last bit to Tornado Alley.  They ran a course record.  I guess she's got limited opportunities these days and it would have been fitting for her to have the record in her resume.

Weekend media reports indicated that Rob Heathcote's handy 5yo Guerrouj is off to the retirement paddock.
The horse has won over $100,000 in 37 starts (4-9-4).
Guerrouj was a horse who needed to be handy in his races and I found it remarkable that he frequently found good draws.
In his 37 starts, the average field size was just under 12.  The average of the barriers drawn by Guerrouj was 4.4.
He drew inside 5 in 20 of his 37 races including:
Box 1 ... 6 times
Box 2 ... 3 times
Box 3 ... 4 times
Box 4 ... 7 times
Truly amazing stats, and I doubt any other horse can match them.

Haven't noticed this before, but at Doomben tomorrow,in every race there are trainers with multiple runners .Noel Doyle has 4 in the first ,while D.Murphy has 3 in the fourth.
M.Thexton R1, B.McLachlan R2, R.HeathcoteR3 ,B.Laming R4 anR6 ,
R.Maund R5, L.Birchley R7 & L.Ross R8 each have two runners in those races
How will they go ?Laming looks to be one of the better chances with Eskimo Dan and Sir Coup in race 6 with not much between them in early markets.According to the trainer Lacey Morrison had the pick and chose Eskimo Dan while  Laming told Bart Sinclair that he thinks Eskimo is the best horse but Sir Coup is the fittest and is outstanding in wet ground.Doomben will be rain affected, slow, a strong possibility based on weather forecasts.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Ben Looker is driven to succeed
by Bart Sinclair

HE carries an L plate but is a good "driver". Apprentice Ben Looker, 17, is steering a course up a sharp incline on the track but his progress is slow.

Grafton-based Looker has to travel to a lot of race meetings but as the holder of a restricted "L" licence he has to travel with an experienced driver.

Fortunately his parents Michael and Debbie are on call for most of the travel days.

"I was eligible to get a full licence last September but things have been so hectic I haven't got round to going for the test," Looker said at Doomben on Saturday after his success on Nuclear Medicine.

The victory was his 66th since he began race riding in late 2006.

It has been a remarkable run for Looker, who had never ridden a horse before he joined the stable of John Shelton three years ago.

"My father knew John growing up in Glencoe just out of Glen Innes and when I decided to give racing a try he took me to John," Looker said.

Nuclear Medicine's wily trainer Gordon Yorke is a big Looker fan.

"He's a terrific kid. I can see the enthusiasm in his eye. You can tell he wants to be successful and loves doing what he's doing," Yorke said.

It certainly has been a sudden rise to prominence by young Looker.
I think he had one of his first rides in Brisbane at a recent Doomben mid-week on Our Lukas for Robert Heathcote.  Looker showed initiative in the early stages and took the horse to the front after being trapped wide.  Our Lukas won the race.
On Saturday Looker had rides in each race at Doomben.  Quite an achievement for a 17yo.
