As soon asLa Marianne won her Maiden at EF yesterday, SC trainer Bill Gavin announced that he was retiring from training.  La Marianne will be taken over by owner Alan Jones.
LM's grand-dam is La Neige who won an Epsom beating Tiger Town.  She's a close relative to De Gaulle Lane.
Her initials alone suggest she's headed for a stellar career.

WIDELY-travelled John Cameron is expected to win the hotly contested position as chief executive of Gold Coast Turf Club.

Cameron, 46, until recently was the chief executive of Moonee Valley Racing Club.

Before the MVRC position Cameron was chief executive of Thoroughbred Racing South Australia until he resigned to take on the Moonee Valley role in August, 2004.

He has a background in the industry in his native New Zealand where he was a jumps rider.

Cameron is expected to take up duties early next month.

The GCTC board was rushed with more than 30 applications including several highly experienced administrators when current CEO Grant Sheather's role at the club was advertised nationally.

Jockey Luke Nolen yesterday received the perfect spring carnival tonic when he was given the all-clear to resume riding trackwork.

Nolen seemed certain to be sidelined for the spring after horrific injuries in a race fall from Antidotes at Doomben on May 17.

"The neurosurgeon gave me the all-clear today to start riding trackwork," he said.

Nolen, 27, required facial surgery after an injury to his mouth palate and received anterior cruciate knee ligament damage in a fall from Antidotes in the BTC Sprint.

Nolen, who scored a career best win on El Segundo in last year's Cox Plate, said he would start riding work this morning but put no timetable on his return to race riding.

Very interesting 3yo race tomorrow at Doomben. Some promising horses engaged not least of which are the toppie, Rumba Jack and Charming Rogue. Pride and Power has finally drawn in but it is questionable if that will be of any benefit.

I just hope the track is not too bad. Burdekin Blues will have his work cut out from the draw (which may be nullified to some extent by track condition) but more so the weight on a rain affected track.

BTW can anyone let me know why no GC meeting tomorrow?

Coin, there is a good meeting in Townsville tomorrow so GC is getting a break,
Re race 5 tomorrow. I don't mind Swirling Moss from Rob Heathcotes yard. It is up in class but has Ryan Wiggins on top and gee I reckon he works hard and I hope he gets his just rewards for that.
Maybe another roughie in that race might be Jad from Brian Guy's yard
In the last race I've a slight leaning to Nepro

Good news that smart rider Lacey Morrison is finally on the road to recovery after the horror fall in the Eye Liner.  Her injuries (severe concussion) turned out to be far worse than anticipated.

What your Gold Coast Turf Club article didn't mention today was the fact that the current Gold Coast Turf Club CEO Grant Sheather did not and has not resigned. He has been shafted by the new Board for inappropriate and unprofessional reasons (dare I suggest they have a hidden Agenda??)although they do cite a technicality in his appointment as their reason. Humbug!!!! Grant has been employed by the Gold Coast Turf Club for 20 years ............the last two in the CEO position. He is very well liked by the Membership and has performed his CEO duties admirably and without fault. He was invited to submit his application for this newly advertised position which clearly, he quite rightly felt was inappropriate considering he already held the position...This is a blight on the current Board who have shown a complete lack of integrity in this matter. This recent unnecessary appointment of another CEO is most inappropriate. The Members will register their lack of confidence in this Board in due course. Carole Devine......Member GCTC

Just chatting to a Gold Coast trainer who tells me that he and a number of other trainers have pretty much boycotted the cushion track at Caloundra.
He also tells me that a number of the better riders will only be going to Caloundra when they race on the grass.
Apparently the track is terribly inconsistent from one day to the next.
What he says appears to be borne out by the the number of runners on today's programme.

Townsville Cup won yesterday by Dini Who  beating Majestic Sight second and Stage Shaker third .Watched replay today on Retro, winner won by 2 lens or so. SM reported result as Dini Who,close photo from Majestic Sight while Sky didn't like the right result apparently and reversed the placegetters .Last week Tony Meany had Stathi in jail when he wasn't and still no correction.Who can you believe these days.

Yes, the fields are ordinary in the extreme.
Let's hope Polar Wolf does the right thing when he returns to his old abode.  I'm interested in Court Adjourned and Leica Launch in the trifecta.  The race looks way too short for LL, but he can run a race fresh.  I'll be looking at the place odds for all three.

Trainer Pat Duff after Victory Code , who was based in NZ earlier this year, won the main sprint at Doomben on Saturday at his third Brisbane start, all on slow tracks

My wife always takes 1-3-4 in the Brisbane Saturday treble so I added a couple to give her a better chance.
Last time 1-3-4 won was with Harvey Lad winning the last leg with the French jockey on top. Must have been ten years or more back

On Saturday and again yesterday there seemed to be some uneven starts at EF Whether it was horses beginning slowly or a fault in the starting stalls I couldn't say but you have to believe what you see and that's what I saw.Maybe there's a new starter who has a different procedure .Didn't see any reference to this in the Stewards report .

On checking the stewards report there were numerous incidents of horses beginning slowly or inconveniencing others on Wed. Nothing wrong with the stalls, just bad barrier behaviour.
Replays might give a different perspective from anyone on course seeing it live as the opening frame on video is not level with the stalls.Dillinger in the last was flattened after jumping away reasonably while AT called it as missing the start  He's become an expensive and  unlucky conveyance.

Ipswich Turf Club Looks to the Future

The Ipswich Turf Club announced plans to redevelop a small parcel of their land at Tuesday‘s 2008 Annual General Meeting. 

Chairman Wayne Patch made the announcement yesterday with the full support of the Ipswich Turf Club Board and Queensland Racing Ld.  The decision is part of the Club’s strategy to overcome the financial challenges facing many sporting clubs, particularly those in the Racing industry. 

Mr. Patch said “This decision was taken very seriously.  The Board has been looking for a new source of revenue since about 2000.  Our objective has always been to act responsibly and in the best interests of the Club and the community”. 

The Ipswich Turf Club is one of Queensland’s most popular and successful racing venues, and hosts one of Ipswich’s largest events, the annual Ipswich Cup. 

Mr. Patch said “this is a significant decision for a Club with a 120 year history, but times have changed and we’re acting now to secure the Club’s future for next 120 years”. 

Mr. Patch said changes in technology had affected the traditional sources of income, wagering and race attendance, over the past thirty years. 

“Today people can watch the races on Sky Channel TV from the comfort of their lounge rooms, they can place bets over the phone so fewer people are coming to the track. Our traditional sources of income have been seriously eroded”. 

The redevelopment proposal was led by local developer Stephen Williams, a Director of Wingate Babcock, and includes the redevelopment of approximately 3Ha of land fronting Brisbane Road.  The development outcome has not been finalised although it is expected to include relocation of the stables to make way for the development and also upgrades to existing facilities. 

In addition to the redevelopment, Wingate Babcock will also work with the Ipswich Turf Club and their stakeholders to master plan an outcome for the inside of the track. 

The proposal still requires the full approval and support of Ipswich City Council.

Stewards today questioned stablehand Mr K. Colgan regarding his failure to provide a urine sample as directed by stewards on Monday, 25 August 2008. After considering the evidence, K. Colgan was found guilty of a charge contravention of AR81A(b)(2), in that he failed to provide a urine sample. K. Colgan's licence to ride trackwork was suspended for a period of 4 months from midnight, 25 August and to expire at midnight, 24 December 2008. AR81A(b)(2).

Ken Pope resumed track-work last week - he had a serious fall while working a horse on the Cushion back in June.
Lacey Morrison is awaiting a clearance from her neurosurgeon.  Lacey has been doing it tough since a fall at Ipswich on Cup Day.
Skye Bogenhuber is progressing OK after a horror accident after a barrier trial at Gatton last month.

We should acknowledge the fact that C2 mare Ginkgo Gold ran a TRACK RECORD at SC on Sunday last when resuming.  She was having just her 10th start and put the 1000 m behind in 56.67.  The previous record was credited to Maintained Wealth about 20 years ago from memory.
GG is trained by the very capable Kelly/Gary Doughty team at GC.

Shane Scriven could have ridden first-starter Arctic Echo in the opener at Doomben yesterday, but opted for the more experienced Rama Kaho.
Trainer Baldwin was less than excited when Rama Kaho ranged alongside Artic Echo at the 150 and looked likely to win.
Was a nice ride by Andrew Spinks to get the Monashee Mountain filly home.

Can't recall too many Argentinian steeds racing in Brisbane.  Scenica is due to line up on Saturday at EF in the F&M Quality.
Perfect Feeling has accepted, and this has put 13 of the 15 runners on the minimum.
Kanpeki has drawn 15 of 15, but the way the weather is that could be a plus.

Note the runs of MY LIMIT and FRAMOUS yesterday.

Both were victims of pilot error at their previous starts. My Limit ran up backsides under Adrian Coome and Eddie Wilkinson on Framous took an inside path where the going was inferior compared with out wide,

Yesterday both were ridden perfectly, even though Framous went under narrowly.

The difference? Jason Holder.

My point? Watch for horses where he takes over from another Brisbane or Qld based rider, regardless of who it is. It will in all likelihood be ridden better and therefore perform better than at its previous start. His ride on My Limit showed all the hallmarks of a typical Stubby ride where an inferior rider could have been in all sorts of trouble in the straight.

Colless is the only one consistently at his level in Queensland IMHO.

Looks like I will need to revise my opinion of Stubby's ride on Framous.

According to justracing, the track was 'a disgrace on the inside after 3 mls of rain. It was back to the old Eagle Farm, the way it raced'.

Can't say as I noticed myself but I wasn't looking for bias on Saturday.

I wouldn't be questioning your judgement, coins.  You're talking about the whiz-kid who showed us a pic of Regal Castanea "taking a gap" in the straight last week.  The fact is that Regal Castanea was 3-wide from the outset and was never inside another runner.  What a dill.  Does he actually watch the races?
Obviously the tips are on fire of late.  He's still telling us about tipping Hard To Catch in the Stradroke.  Buttttttttttt....they're still great value for a few hundred bucks a year.  LOL.

I noted the last two winners started from 1 and stayed on the rails until they straightened, and then came around the leader to win.
The "experts" want it both ways.  Ya can't roll the track, but then at the end of a race meeting if jockeys think - but don't know - that the going is better out a few horses then the track should be closed down.

I looked at the replay again of the Secret's Untold race, and Sam's Express died on its run if you want my opinion.  Was suspect at the distance before and after the race.
In the last, Framous made up about 10 lengths hard against the rail.  Because he didn't make up 10 and a half lengths, the inside had to be "off".
On more important matters....the yellow and blacklivery fared a bit better in the draw for Ipswich on Thursday.  Sharing the Magic has drawn 8 of 15.  Wow.

The assertion was put that Framous may have been better heading to the outside. It would not have got close doing that IMHO.

Framous made up many lengths when they fanned rounding the bend and Stubby stuck to the inside.

The other horse was just a fraction strong, and benefitted from a gun barrier - as forum members will know from dd's pointers, Master Illusion on is quite handy on his day, and Hammersley rides him well.

My interest in the Heathcote runners stems mainly from the remarkable sequence of bad draws - particular for horses carrying yellow and black.
It was not my intention to get under you guard as No 1 card-carrying groupie.  Just like I don't mind backing Ms Taylor, but would never try to cut out gratlog.  He definitely saw her first.

It certainly stopped in the last 50m after it looked to have the race won.You could be right about the distance but it might have been the inside was not quite as good which made the difference.We''ll never know for sure.

It's amazing how the luck runs for some.....
The La Montagna team bred (and part own) Arctic Echo. She was due to have a her first run a few weeks back but drew poorly and was scratched.  Then she accepted for a Doomben Maiden on 3/9 and drew the red box.  Scriven turned downed the ride after a less than impressive trial.  It's now history the filly won the race at $14 under a good ride from Andrew Spinks.
Arctic Echo now turns up at Ipswich tomorrow in a field of 17.  Again she's drawn ONE.

On riding winners, MagiC.
It was a bleary-eyed Maryann Thexton who fronted up at EF yesterday to see her consistent mare My First Affair run another 2nd.
Maryann was just back from Sydney where she'd spent a day or two overseeing the progressed of her good 3yo CHILLED.  "At 4am this morning I was out at the track watching Chilled gallop".  Maryann reports he's on track for his first Sydney run next week.  All going well, he's then off to Melbourne.

Glen Colless endured a frustrating 10 mins after winning Race 5 at EF today.
Flighty mare Atomic Huss was less than co-operative as Colless endeavoured to release the surcingle which had tightened during the race.  The Hussonet mare would not stand still and cause a lengthy delay in the "correct weight" signal as she pranced about the enclosure with Colless and Liam Birchley in hot pursuit.
Had they known AH's weight they could have weighed her with saddle intact then merely subtracted her body weight.  Probably something to think about for future incidents of this nature.

According to a report in todays CM Racing Minister Andrew Fraser has agreed to meet a deputation from Toowoomba trainers keen to preserve the grass track at Clifford Park. Spokesman Darryl Gollan representing 62 trainers and 3 jockeys obviously has a lot of local support against a cushion track replacing the existing grass circuit.QRL Chairman Bob Bentley said the issue was one for the TTC not QRL and if the licensees convince the club to put the cushion track inside the course proper that would be ok .

Seemed a nice run by Rampant Lion yesterday.  He copped a hammering from Scriven, and I'd think he'll need some time off before his next outing.Good luck to connections.  They endured a Winter that would have tested the best of us.
Simplest looked to have every chance in the Shorts.  I thought he'd run a drum at the 200.  Maybe the track wasn't ideal.

Some of us on here will never forget the name Fat Quarters.  At Doomben back in April the mare knocked us out of a quaddie of mammoth proportions.  She beat Messiaen after getting a flukey run on the rails.
Well, thankfully we'll never see the name again.  She's been renamed as Dream Baby Cash.

Dates set for track conversion

QUEENSLAND Racing Limited (QRL) yesterday added more details to its planned replacement of the Clifford Park course proper when it outlined a timetable of events to Toowoomba industry stakeholders.

A contingent of QRL officials, several Sunshine Coast trainers and Toowoomba Turf Club representatives met with a group of full-time professional Clifford Park trainers to update them on a timeline for replacing the existing turf with the synthetic Cushion Track compound.

QRL chairman Bob Bentley led the meeting address which was attended by a large body of trainers still opposed to the track conversion.

Bentley said racing would end on the Clifford Park grass in mid-to-late February and resume in July with a gala-opening day highlighted by the delayed running of the 2009 Weetwood Handicap and Toowoomba Cup.

Twenty-two Saturday twilight meetings will be transferred to the Sunshine Coast while work takes place at the track.

Bentley said QRL would approach the Dalby & Northern Downs Jockey Club to possibly host several midweek TAB Bunya Park programs during Clifford Park's closure.

QRL is also considering a $175 float rebate for Darling Downs horses travelling to Saturday Sunshine Coast meetings and making available overnight stabling at Corbould Park is also under consideration.

Bentley conceded there remains opposition to the Cushion Track course proper installation but QRL remained committed he said to ensuring the track's racing future for all stakeholders.

"I understand there is a fair rump still against it, but I think today we might have helped change the view of some of those people,' Bentley said.

"For those who remain against it, all I can say is the decision has been made and now let's get on with it.

"Everything possible will be done to assist people while the work proceeds," Bentley said.

"Arguing and mucking around delays everything and adds to the costs.

"Some construction work, which won't affect anybody, will start before Christmas and racing will close at the completion of the light installation at Corbould Park around mid-to-late February.

"Racing will return to Clifford Park with a gala Weetwood and Toowoomba Cup day and Toowoomba will then revert to its normal schedule.'

But doubts remained yesterday amongst a group of Clifford Park trainers who are in the process of reforming the Toowoomba Trainers' Association in an effort to block the Cushion Track course-proper revamp.

"We are not against Cushion Track being installed at Clifford Park but we remain opposed to it replacing the course proper," interim association president John Dann said after attending yesterday's meeting.

"We weren't satisfied with today's meeting outcome and we will probably go back to our members next week," he said.

"No guarantees have been provided for the future of racing at Clifford Park.

"Nothing has been documented and we will now look at developing a plan of action we can take back to our members.

"It was also disappointing Bob Bentley would not apologise for referring to association members as a 'rag-tag' group of trainers."

Barrier ballerinaNOTRE AMOUR is back from Reform School and is set to line up in Race 7 at Doomben tomorrow. But the bad luck continues for the yellow and black.  She's found box 13 out of 17.
Better outcome for promising gelding CLASSIC FORCE in Race 4  He hasn't been seen since Jan 11 at EF when he started a short-priced favourite and ran nearer last than first.  Rider Mandy Radecker incurred a lengthy suspension for her ride.  The suspension was removed on appeal.  Classic Force has found the red tomorrow, and Ms Radecker retains the ride.

Wonder if Bob is going to make candy floss and toffie apples for the Gala day??.
Seems the trainers never had a choice.
What kind of feild will the weetwood get run on dirt??
Are QRL going to program some open sprints running up to this date at sunny coast for sprinters to get a feel of the dirt and racing at night?? If so how much are these races going to be worth?? Why stay up late to run on dirt if the money that day is as good or better on turf. Looks like the demise of the Weetwood day from now on.
Last but not least...i really hope bob gets those toy trucks and diggers he wants for xmas so he can play in the sand in toowoomba over his xmas break doing some non affective construction work

It's not dirt omni, it is a mix of rubber, wax, some fibrerous materials and sand.
Either way, so much for looking after the stakeholders that BB keeps going on about ...... 99% of trainers are fully against replacing their track with the stuff and I for one would have thought they where the Stakeholders.
Just makes you wonder who has the most to gain by installing these cushion tracks, else why would they be pushing so hard to install them.
Is somebody making some money on the side ??

magic...sorry but old slang for it from my time working in america. they would say either a dirt or turf horse. i am well aware of its make up having ridden on the tracks over there. anyway yeah the trainers had no input eitherway...unless they just went along with it.

Well, NOTRE AMOUR walked into the stalls like a lamb.  Stood there, thought for a while, then just as the starter was about to hit the button she thought she'd show how adept she is at standing on her hind legs.  Sadly she sustained a minor cut and was withdrawn (again).  At least the punters didn't lose their money, but it's shocking luck for connections.  She's reportedly headed for another stint in Rehab.  Let's hope she comes back fit and well and in a more co-operative frame of mind.
The Forum was well represented at Doomben, and not all were losers.  Thenamy was in the Winners' Circle when stayer JUJLIO won the third in impressive style.  This fellow looked a fair stayer in G Ryan's hands a couple of seasons ago.  Should be more wins ahead for the team.

JOCKEY Bobby El-Issa will remain out of the saddle until Boxing Day after losing an appeal against a two-month suspension for failing to give Miss Twist every chance in a race at Doomben.

Miss Twist finished last in a field of six on September 3.

The race was won by Falzig trained by Maryann Thexton for whom El-Issa was stable rider at the time.

El-Issa's first-level appeal was originally scheduled to be heard on Monday but he notified stewards he was ill and the matter was held over until late yesterday and concluded last night after a three-hour hearing.

He is already serving a one-month suspension, which was halved on appeal, for putting the whip away on the Thexton-trained My First Affair two strides before the line in a race at Eagle farm in which she was beaten just a nose three days after he rode Miss Twist.

Following Miss Twist's race, El-Issa was involved in a heated confrontation with trainer Jon Walk and owner Harry Hayes after he was instructed to settle the mare back in the field.

El-Issa was found guilty of not giving Miss Twist every chance to obtain the best possible place after she missed the start then was ridden hard with the whip to cross to the lead before the 1200m in the 1640m race.

El-Issa attempted to restrain Miss Twist until near the 900 metres where he allowed the horse to run along and placed it under pressure passing the 800 metres with the horse under significant pressure leaving the 500 metres.

Miss Twist led by five lengths before compounding to finish at the tail of the field, 13 lengths from the winner.

Bobby was confident of winning this as his parting remarks from the stewards room revealed  Was very long odds in my book

NOTRE AMOUR reared in the barriers and got it a foreleg over the barrier partition. A veterinary examination revealed the mare not suitable to race. NOTRE AMOUR was declared a late scratching at 4.12 pm. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on NOTRE AMORE were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 14 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 13 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. As NOTRE AMOUR has had a history of misbehaviour at the barriers and has been barred on 3 previous occasions, stewards ordered that NOTRE AMOUR will have its nomination to race refused for 2 months, and will have to obtain 3 barrier certificates, 2 of which must be obtain in official trials. AR50.
Crikey this should be the last throw of the dice for this mare,costly for connections  disruptive for other well behaved runners not to mention punters losing 14% on win tickets.Breeding barn

An exciting win it was DD. Another forumite, by the name of Lucky, was the instigator of buying Jujulio as a tried horse and full credit must go to him. At the time I bought my share in him, I didn't know Lucky. Fingers crossed for a few more wins.
It was great to meet Ascot in the committee room post race.
I do feel for the connections of Notre Amour. When she walked straight in, I thought she was right. As the saying goes "thats racing". At least  it appears as though she will get another chance.

Yes, meant add "well done" to Lucky.
With regard to Notre Amour causing those who backed the winner to lose 14% of their winnings, that's a load of hogwash.  They got the price they would have, had Notre Amour not been in the market to begin with.
Further, had NA started, there was a distinct chance that backers of the winner would have incurred a more substantial deduction: try 100%.
The punters might think they have reason to whinge are the place punters on the 1st and 2nd horses, since NA could have done no more than push their bets back to 2nd and 2rd.  But, as for the win punters, the odds they finished with are those they'd have received without NA in the original market.

I've seen some unlucky horses when it comes to drawing barriers, but SC steed MILLERS WHEEL must top the bill.
He's had a string of wide draws recently and has accepted for two races over the weekend.
15 of 15 at EF.
10 of 11 at his home track Sunday.
Maybe it's all due to the missing apostrophe.

Sad news in today's C-M that great producer Telltina has died at 18.  She's the dam of horses such as Tellem, Tellson, Rockem, Vocalic, etc.  She died with an unborn foal which was to be a full sibling to Vocalic.
Owners have retained the female offspring.
I recall backing Telltina's mother, Bernalla.

Dubbles You based your criticism on assumimg NA would  jump which it might have and won which is more doubtful.Her record isn't that good although she has shown ability on a few occasions She's had enough chances already and unless they try something new to re-educate her there'll be more of the same andif she does it again ,assuming she passes the trials, she'll get the red card and everyone including the connections will be better off.

Yes, it's all speculation....but if a horse is $7 in the market....there is the chance it might have WON.  Those who complain about the deduction are dismissing that possibility - I woulda too if I'd backed the winner.  LOL.
She's a smart mare, NA.  Has been from her first run.  Let's hope we get the chance to see more of her talent.

Race clubs struggling to get crowds have another hurdle to overcome.The Pinkenba Hotel ,which I've never heard of , has an ad in the CM racing section today,  which is usually reserved for tipsters, promoting its Caulfield Cup day tomorrow.
Boasting newly renovated areas,tipping comp worth $2500,ratings ,sausage sizzle and the highlight two hot lingerie and 2 hot topless girls  from 2-4 .
The address is Eagle Farm Road. The Only Place To Punt according to them ,not really there are some others I know of.

Only thing that's missing from Pinkenba Hotel is moving, live horses.  I think I'll stick with Eagle Farm.
Not often we see full brothers in the same race.  Hard to Catch and Little Stranger do battle in the 4th tomorrow.  And they might run the quinella.

Has been a mixed week for trainer Ron Maund.
He was pleased to hear his darling Gold Edition is in foal to More than Ready.
He looks certain to lose his most expensive 2yo (by Falvelon) following a training incident.
He was thrilled with the run of Ice Chariot in the Caulfield, and is now looking forward to the MV Cup.
He was relieved to see Sequallan return to form after disappointing runs in Sydney.
Unfortunately his runner at Twba last night pulled up lame and the future looks bleak.

DISGRACED former Queensland Labor minister Merri Rose says the humiliating shock of spending time in jail will stay with her forever.

Speaking for the first time since she was jailed for trying to blackmail former premier Peter Beattie in 2006, Rose will feature on ABC TV's Australian story tonight.

The former prisoner, high school drop out and Cabinet minister told the ABC she would take her humiliating three-month jail experience with her for the rest of her life.
"It's humiliating, it's the loss of freedom," Rose said.

"It's the indignity, it's being watched all the time, having your decision-making taken away from you.

"I used to say to myself, I was never going to complain about doing grocery shopping ever again.

She said her attempt to blackmail Mr Beattie into giving her a job was "a really stupid mistake".

Rose now lives a modest life on Moreton Island with her partner fisherman Danny Corney.

It is not expected that she will disclose the blackmail secret in the program as she would be charged with contempt and would risk going back behind bars.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “The ground helped for sure, but it’s really all about finding the right race for any horse. This turned out to be his race. He’s been running at the Sunshine Coast in big fields. The track here, a smaller field, the conditions – it was a quite different mix. Turned out it suited him to a tee.”

Jockey Shane Scriven: “That went exactly to plan. That’s why I get paid the big dollars. The opposition was only ordinary and he always had two lengths on them.”

The win was good timing for some, bad timing for others. Sharing The Magic had eight owners three runs back but, after failing to get past first base after ten runs, seven owners decided to sack the horse. They were bought out by the remaining owner, Bruce Harry.

Owner Bruce Harry: “I can’t say I saw anything in the horse particularly, but I thought I’m in it now, I’ll stick with it. I was quite happy to keep it as a horse to ride when it was finished. This is a nice bonus.”

I agree.  I think we undervalue the character building potential of the racetrack.  In other eras the forlorn and hopeless such as myself had to rely on becoming monks or hermits for a decade or two to refresh hope.  We just have to wait until next Saturday at Capalaba.

I was impressed with Ballina gelding INVINCIBLE POWER when he raced around Brisbane in the autumn-winter.  He resumes today over 1000 m with 60 kg.  (Race 8, the red).

Watched the last two at Ipswich ALLOWAY KING should have won imo instead of  running third under a hold from the female jockey.Very wayward in the straight after having a winning lead  it lugged off the rails  away from the right handed whip and with a stronger rider capable of using it the left hand would have won .

There was an elderly gentleman seated in the background.  It was none other than John ("Jack") Harbutt - one of Brisbane leading riders in the 50s and 60s.  He rode the mighty EYE LINER.  I think he was atop in her Champagne Stakes win.

CHAMPION jockey Stathi Katsidis is recovering from an operation to pin and plate a broken left leg that will sideline him for two months.

The dual premiership-winning rider thanked the surgeon who worked on his leg at the Mater Private Hospital in Redlands and was positive about his return to race riding.

"I was going to submit my paperwork last Friday to stewards for a clearance to ride trackwork when a horse reared over on me that morning," Katsidis said.

"I was lying there thinking 'will I ever be able to use my leg again?' because the compound break looked pretty bad.

"I don't know whether it was the shock but I never felt much pain. It was a compound break of the femur."

Katsidis was mobile enough to shower yesterday and already planning his rehabilitation progam to get back to riding.

The incident happened at Pinnacle Park, Beaudesert, where Katsidis has been working for the past six months.

He had been breaking in horses after stewards withdrew his licence for nine months after he tested positive to ecstasy.

"I have had a good break and it is a chance for my body to have a little extra rest from wasting," Katsidis said.

"I had completed the course they asked me to take and I had a police report that I was also going to hand them."

Last year's leading Brisbane jockey, Jim Byrne, will also be missing from the riding scene for the next few weeks.

Byrne has taken time off to have corrective surgery to an old injury and the ranks of leading riders have never been thinner.

Glen Colless is also on the sidelines and several other jockeys are serving suepensions for careless riding, opening the door to some new names.

I know you've given this guy a rap before but Graham Potter does a great job with his site. I've just caught up with the last week or two. Well done Graham.

His commentary is informative and balanced and the photos are interesting.

Interesting to note Mick Mair's comments about the SCCT in regards to Upi Bay..."Some of them go alright on it and others don't". We could see specialists there yet. Personally I am no fan of the Cushion Track.

Yes, coins.  I agree that Graham does a good job, and I would encourage anyone with interest in Brisbane racing to put his blogspot high on the list of Racing Favourites.
He must spend a lot of time putting together his reports, and I'm wondering if he has plans to do something on a grander scale.  His stuff deserves more exposure and he should not have trouble finding a sponsor or two.  I guess running a website is far more time-consuming than his blog?  MagiC?
I speak with Graham at the track most days.  He's a nice guy, and committed to his photography.  He interacts well with connections and you can see he obtains some interesting "grabs".  I'll have a chat with him as to his future plans.
 
As for Upi Bay....the improvement was predicted, and it was good to see him win well yesterday.  He's a fair galloper.  I'm still very very cautious about putting my lunch money on the Cushion.  OK, it might be a case of finding the horses that handle it, but there's been a lot of inconsistency IMO even among those that do.  But being a desperate, having no friends, and not a long punting life left, I guess I'll be lining up on Friday nights.

'Race fields' legislation introduced to Parliament

The Bligh Government has moved to protect the future of racing in Queensland with the introduction of 'race fields' legislation into State Parliament today.
Treasurer Andrew Fraser said it was an important step forward for the racing industry.
"Since New South Wales committed to introducing 'race fields' legislation earlier this year, the Bligh Government had no option but to follow the same path," Mr Fraser said.
"The legislation will allow Queensland's racing bodies to charge wagering operators a turnover-based fee for using Queensland racing product.
"The Queensland industry itself will determine the rate applied, but I expect it to be similar to NSW, where the charge is 1.5%.
"As has been previously announced, the Bill will be retrospective to 1 September 2008. This will bring the operation of the 'race fields' legislation in line with NSW.
"The revenue gathered from 'race fields' fees will go straight back into the racing industry.
"Without this legislation, the Queensland racing industry could lose millions each year.
Mr Fraser said the State Government had taken into account the recent High Court decision in the relation to the Betfair v West Australian Government case.
"It is important that any legislation does not discriminate against operators on a geographical basis. All wagering operators, whether based in Queensland or licensed elsewhere in Australia, will be required to gain approval to offer betting on Queensland races."

The running part ... probably not DD, a well developed Website makes for far less work and is far less time consuming.

The time consuming and or resource hungry part is either developing a workable solution and or using lots of resources (money) to get the right solution.

A well developed website should nearly run itself .... in any business time is money

Ex-Brisbane filly FILLE DE NEIGE goes around in the next at Canterbury.  We haven't seen her since March.
There's not much of her, and she's had a few problems.  But she can really hike along.
Owned by a couple of nice guys, too.  Let's hope she can do something down South.

Maybe not dd - he's had enough chances.

Would be interested in your thoughts in how the track played on Saturday - especially in regards to the run of Thorondo who I know you were keen and Onalar who I backed.

Both good runs - Onalar blocked at a vital stage but Thorondo made ground on the fence whereas its stablemate Catchit struggled to do so in another race - quite the opposite in fact.

I suspect you're right, coins.  He's had some issues, and of course is now condemned to carrying high weights.  But isn't he a good galloper.  He got no real favours on Satdy but still ran a great race, I thought.
How track played.  Well it was certainly in much better condition than I'd anticipated. SLOW seemed right to me.  Was it even?  Results might suggest inside wasn't the best place to be, but is that the impression we get due to horses being brought wide to make their finishing runs.  Seems it's something we see everywhere these days - when tracks are soft, ya gotta come wide in the straights.  Strange, because it's on the turns where the inside carries most trafiic.
Yes, Onalar's run was good and looked stiff.  Same for Thorondo.  Heagney didn't wanna be in there but was shoved back in below the 200 and was then left with no choice.  I was stunned to see him running so close after the jump.  I doubt we'll get those odds again.  He's probably better on a firm track, and he'll handle longer, too.
Catchit's run looked awful.  Something must have been wrong.

I think the reality is that Pepperwood is way smarter than Phil.
Good card to test us at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.  Hope the weather holds off.
I wrote a lot about the bad barriers by a few of Rob Heathcote's runners a couple on months ago, but I reckon I've found a horse that takes the prize for the most unlucky galloper in the barrier lottery.
KENSHE.  She just can't get close - and that includes meetings that are abandoned.

Testing day at the office at Eagle Farm yesterday.  Sure, it WAS Tatt's day, but I think the guys in charge of things overdid it somewhat.  To say there were some surprise results would be an understatement.  Can't recall every taking a quaddie and not getting ONE winner.  Closest I got was to have temporarily included Insistence, but then tossed it out.
But it's an ill-wind that blows nobody good.  Last night I got a call from a mate who (foolishly) follws my tips.  It went something like this.  No greeting, just "You're a genius.  I had $50 EW.  I've given Lesley a grand, and she thinks you're a genius too."  I was taken aback, wondering what on earth he'd done.  It suddenly twigged that Insistence was 15, and I'd tipped On the Fridge (16).  I asked "Did you back Insistence?".  "Yes, you tipped it!" was the reply.  I set him straight and we had a lengthy laugh.  He'd taken my numbers before heading to Moreton, and written 15 instead of 16.  Why doesn't that ever happen to me?
