Have seen numerous posts of miscellaneous stuff relating to Brisbane Racing on various threads.
Think we need a thread set aside for such stuff.

Exciting radio this morning with that intrepid 4TAB newshound Steve Hewlett interviewing (in order) John Morissey, Bevan Laming and Brian Smith.  He couldn't have found three more solid blokes. Neither would give Hewlett the answers he wanted and on several occasion Hewlett could be heard wondering what to ask next.

Talking with Brian Smith on Scattergun's failure when odds-on, he again asked Smith for an explanation.  For what must be the tenth time, Smith told Hewlett nothing could be found on x-ray, scopes, etc.  A few minutes later, not satisfied, Hewlett had to come back "But Brian, was there some little thing there?".  "Nope" said Smith "nothing".  I wonder does Hewlett ever listen to his stuff.

Was it the ride on Scattergun ?

Or was it just a plain awful run ?

Whatever, he'll still be very hard to beat in a pretty weak affair on Saturday, especially as one of the three others above the limit weight won't be running.

Stacked off to Brisbane after another good win
Promising three-year-old filly Stacked from the Chris Waller stable has booked a trip to Queensland after she proved too good in the Last Post Handicap (1300m) at Randwick today.
Heavily supported in betting, Stacked with Darren Beadman in the saddle firmed from $4.80 into $3.80 while the favourite Catseye Beach blew in betting to start at $2.35 after opening at a $1.95 quote.
After beginning quickly, Stacked went straight to the front and Beadman was able to dictate the speed to suit himself before kicking well clear at the top of the straight and holding a decisive margin to the post.
”She’s one of those horses that you hardly know is there,” Waller said.
”A real little professional in everything she does, a real racehorse.
”She’ll have another start in Sydney and then we’ll look for a few races in Queensland.
”We have nominated for the Oaks but we’ll take it a run at a time and see where that takes us.”
Consistent filly Crafty Belle again ran an honest race to finish second with the favourite Catseye Beach fight on for third after travelling three deep for much of the journey.
Stacked 54kg ($3.80) (D.Beadman) defeated Crafty Belle 54.5kg ($8.50) (K.O’Hara) by one and a half lengths with Catseye Beach 55kg ($2.35) (S.Miller a3) another two and a quarter lengths back in third.
The time for the 1300m was 1.21.67 with the final 600m run in 36.06.

Tell ya one thing certain trainers need to do - read the QRacing website for changed conditions and dates.

I've heard at least 2 Sydney trainers looking at aiming their horses at the Guineas as a Derby lead up.........bit of a problem fellas....the Derby is run 2 days before the Guineas.

Plus changes to the Bris Cup, O'Shea and Doomben Cup distances and TJ Smith conditions (now set weights)

Plenty of media and on-course discussion about the lack of metropolitan meetings on public holidays.

Avid racing fan Mark Oberhardt fueled the fire in today's press by pointing to the poor prizemoney, low class of runners, and running rail out 6.5 m at the Anzac Day meeting at GC.  Mark commented that he'd be interested to see the UNiTAB holds.  Well here they are, Mark:

25.04.06 Eagle Farm $2,575,778

25.04.07 Gold Coast $1,889,249

The Guineas and Derby arrangement was changed last year.  The Guineas attracted a field of 19 runners, the Derby a maximum field of 20 runners.

Love the big fields they have in Brissy - pity the adminsitrators down here haven't the guts to increase field sizes

I was looking through some back form today and I found a race where Brawny Spirit won an open hcp down the straight in a field of 23 - that's what we want to see!!!

How do they do it ?

It has always staggered me how nearly every Saturday Queenland fields are big, yet the prizemoney is nothing compared with Sydney ?

I know!! It is truly bizarre

Apparently Flemington (one of the biggest tracks in Oz) now has a field limit of 16 except for the Melb Cup, Salinger and Newmarket when it goes to 24. So if you can safely run 24 down the straight for those two races why not the rest? Doomben is a lot smaller than Flemington but they're happy to run 18 horse fields on a regular basis, I don't get where the VRC are coming from

   Midweek  Sat
 Brisbane  $13k  $45k
 Perth  $20k  $45k
 Melb  $24k  $56k
 Sydney  $24k  $65k

Matt, the above table shows stakes for a typical midweek or saturday race. It indicates to me part of the reason Brisbane generally has the best Saturday programs, as they don't throw it away on midweeks.

Another reason IMO is that Brisbane midweek programs can also have up to three maidens on the card. Perth has got it entirely wrong and Sydney and Melbourne program too many Midweeks.

The average Saturday field size in Brisbane is currently 12.3 versus Perth 10.0, when you pro-rata stakes you can see why it is a shame that eastern states TAB's were privatised.

Thomsen plans more Brisbane winter wins
Sydney trainer Bob Thomsen rarely comes to Brisbane for the winter carnival without returning home with a healthy profit and he's hopeful this year will be no different.

Thomsen has come north with some great gallopers over the years including Slight Chance, Danewin, Grey Receiver, Shogun Lodge and Zinders, all of whom won at Group One level at various Brisbane winter carnivals over the past 25 years.

Slight Chance won six Group Ones during her illustrious career, Danewin won five Group Ones while Shogun Lodge saluted three times at the elite level.

Grey Receiver's best win for Thomsen was the 1982 Group One Stradbroke Hcp while Zinders won the Group One Castlemaine Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm in 1991.

This time, Thomsen has headed north with the highly-rated Danleigh who will take on star Toowoomba filly Gold Edition in the Listed Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on Saturday.

Danleigh, who drew the visitor's barrier in 15, is on his second trip to Queensland after he won the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) last June and was runner-up to Reigning To Win in the Group One TJ Smith (1600m) the same month.

The Mujahid gelding got his revenge on Reigning To Win last start when he powered home to win the Group Three South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick on April 9.

Thomsen has decided to restrict Danleigh to competing against his own age group during the Brisbane winter carnival but hasn't ruled out making a late change to his plans.

"He was placed at Group One level in the TJ Smith here last year and with some further improvement as a four-year-old he might get a chance to win a Group One," Thomsen said.

"I want to keep him to three-year-old races this winter and he won't get a chance to win a Group One while he's in Brisbane unless I switch plans.

"He's arrived safely at the Gold Coast and has settled in well. His work this week was the best he's done this preparation."

While the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley has been mentioned as the spring target for Reigning To Win, Thomsen doesn't believe Danleigh can reach those heights.

"He's only a pony and is definitely not up to the Cox Plate. No way," Thomsen said.

Thomsen has retained Sydney rider Kathy O'Hara for Danleigh in the Gold Coast Guineas and isn't concerned about running into Gold Edition.

"We've got a victory over Gold Edition. She's a very good filly and we won't be underestimating her," he said.

"I'm expecting Danleigh to run a big race."

Gold Edition, who drew barrier 10, finished second to Danleigh in last year's Sires' Produce at Eagle Farm.

The Gold Coast Guineas will be the first of two clashes between Danleigh and Gold Edition as they are set for a rematch in the Group Three BTC Classic (1350m) on May 19.

Danleigh will then run in the Listed The Conrad Treasury Brisbane Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 2 before his main mission, the Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Wallace inquiry adjourned again
07/05/2007 6:40 PM

An inquiry into an elevated bicarbonate level returned by one of John Wallace's horses was adjourned for the second time on Monday due to the trainer's ill health.

The inquiry was first adjourned on Friday when Wallace's lawyers said he was unable to attend for medical reasons and was set aside again until next Monday.

Wallace was asked to front stewards last month following a high bicarb (TC02) reading from three-year-old Boffa who finished seventh in a restricted race at the Gold Coast on March 31.

Boffa had a reading of 37.4 millimoles per litre of plasma which, allowing for a 1.2 discrepancy, placed him just over the permitted 36 level.

Wallace sought and gained an adjournment at the initial inquiry after he told stewards he had not had time to mount a defence.

He told chief steward Reid Sanders when the inquiry opened that he had not been thinking clearly because of personal problems and wanted extra time to seek independent advice on technical evidence relating to the blood sample.

The trainer employs six staff and has 30 horses in his stable, including super sprinter Mitanni who is the equal $4.50 second favourite with Takeover Target for Saturday's BTC Cup (1200m) the first Group One of the Queensland winter carnival.

Dual Group One winner Bentley Biscuit is the $3.50 favourite for the BTC Cup with final acceptances to be taken on Wednesday.

Trainer Shaun Dywer is having a frustrating run with his good mare, Sunday Adieu.
She needs runs over a distance, and last Saturday was a barrier scratching when "kicked by another runner".  This week she's been balloted out of the Chairman's Handicap.

Oh dear.  Last year there was strife because the winner of the 10,000 couldn't be rehandicapped for the Stradbroke (thereby getting a run) plus the fact that QTC didn't give the winner of the 10,000 automatic entry.
Now the 10,000 winner CAN be rehandicapped and there's strife again.
From today's The Courier-Mail:
The weight of opinion
Chris Bassani

May 15, 2007 12:00am

SYDNEY trainer John O'Shea angrily labelled Queensland Racing's renewed handicap conditions for the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) as "a stupid rule".

Weights for Queensland's $1 million premier race run on June 9 at Eagle Farm were released yesterday.

O'Shea was delighted with 52.5kg allotted to rising star Reigning To Win but upset the handicapper could still penalise a horse which wins a flat race worth $60,000 or more for the Stradbroke.

Conditions enable penalties to be imposed on winners of set-weight and weight-for-age races, a rarity in 150 years of racing anywhere in the world.

"This could only happen in Queensland," O'Shea said. "The art of training is to beat the handicapper if you are good enough. The point of weight-for-age races is not to get handicapped.

"This rule just encourages impropriety . . . I am gobsmacked to be honest."

Penalties aside, O'Shea's ears pricked on hearing Reigning To Win's weight.

The colt is 3˝kg better off than Gold Edition at the weight-for-age scale, the latter getting what trainer Ron Maund expected in 53.5kg.

"We beat her in the Roman Consul in Sydney and had 2kg more, yes it is very enticing," O'Shea said.

Maund said it was "almost impossible" for $6 Stradbroke favourite Gold Edition to win.

"It's a tall order. After I realised no filly has carried more than 50kg to victory in recent history, it suggests her task is almost impossible," he said.

While handicapper Lester Grimmett is unlikely to re-handicap Reigning To Win if he wins the 2000m Doomben Cup, the Doomben 10,000 winner, where Gold Edition is favourite, is on close watch.

Grimmett said: "If Gold Edition won the 10,000, depending on the margin, she could get up to a one and half penalty."

Maund said: "It would be a sad day for Queensland racing if Gold Edition was muted by the handicapper.

"I'm locked into this campaign regardless, there is nowhere else to race her, I just have to take it on," he said.

I thought they just wanted the winner of the 10,000 to have automatic entry into the Stradbroke, not re-handicapped?
I agree with O'Shea, if you win at WFA, you should not cop a penalty.

They would've been better to extend the automatic entry clause as Vic has done with races like the Craiglee

Just a question. Why should you not be re hadicapped if you win at WFA? 3yo's are often eligible to be re-hadicapped if they win a classic (i.e. Derby winners in the M Cup, Guineas winners in the C Cup etc), so why should horses who win at WFA, particularly those who would clearly rise significantly in weight, be exempt from a penalty?

Just because we've always done it doesn't mean it's right.

The Caulfield Guineas and the VRC Derby are not run at WFA - they're run at set weights. There were clauses present that the winners of these races could automatically go into the Caul and Melb Cups respectively carrying WFA if they won (and hadn't been previously nominated, and paid a late entry fee) Now who was the last Caulfield Guineas winner to run in a Caulfield Cup? Gotta think back a bit don't you? That's why the CG is no longer an automatic qualifying race

GoJeune,

Doesn't change the issue - why should WFA winners be exempt from a penalty? Makes no sense to me.

BTW, that doesn't mean that winners must get a penalty, only that they can be penalised. I would much prefer WFA winners get a weight penalty to get into a race like the Stradbroke, M Cup etc rather than be exempt from a ballot.

It's problem of no relevance now, since RTW won't be getting a re-handicap in anything, but...
QRL responded to John O'Shea's criticism of the Stradbroke re-handicap options (devised by QRL).
As reported in Friday's press, O'Shea said "It sends a signal they don't have a clue what they're doing."
QRL's comeback was that O'Shea's outburst was "short-sighted and ill-informed". QRL's Racing Services Manager asserts that the conditions are published well in advance of the carnival, and suggests that trainers would welcome the situation where contemporary form was considered.

From QRL website. Red highlight is mine - because the assertion is false.

Queensland Racing’s Racing Services Manger, Mr Paul Brennan, today labelled the statements attributed to Sydney trainer John O’Shea, as “short sighted and ill informed”.

Brennan said: “Subsequent to the conclusion of the 2006 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, Queensland Racing conducted a complete review of the outcomes delivered by the Carnival and the previously disjointed conditions utilised by individual Clubs.”

“As a consequence of this review Queensland Racing made a number of changes to the feature race schedule and implemented a consistent approach to all feature race conditions,” Brennan said.

These changes included the ability for the handicappers to penalise the winner of any race with prizemoney to the winner of $60,000 or more in the Stradbroke Handicap, regardless of weight conditions.

Brennan said: “Under the previous conditions of the Stradbroke the handicappers were unable to penalise the winner of not less than 15 Set Weight races conducted between the release of weights and the running of the Stradbroke.”

“There were only four (4) races that provided the opportunity for the handicappers to allocate a penalty, those being the BTC Sprint, Premier’s Cup, Gunsynd Quality and QTC Cup.”

“I’m sure that most would remember that under the previous conditions of the Stradbroke, last year’s Doomben 10,000 winner “Undue” was denied a start.”

Listed below are the 15 races that previously provided no opportunity for a penalty:

  • Doomben Cup   WFA   Gr1  $500,000   2020m
  • Lord Mayor’s Cup WFA Gr3  $100,000 1615m
  • Glenlogan Park Stakes  SWP LR $150,000 1350m
  • Doomben Roses SW  LR $175,000 2020m
  • BTC Classic  SW  Gr3  $100,000 1350m
  • Champagne Classic SW  Gr2  $150,000 1200m
  • Doomben 10,000  WFA Gr1  $650,000 1350m
  • Rough Habit Plate SW  Gr3  $125,000 2020m
  • Doomben Slipper SW  LR $100,000 1350m
  • Queensland Oaks SW  Gr1  $400,000 2400m
  • Sire’s Produce  SW  Gr2  $250,000 1400m
  • PJ O’Shea Stks  WFA Gr2  $250,000 2200m
  • Dane Ripper Quality SWP Gr3  $200,000 1400m
  • Grand Prix  SWPA Gr3 $125,000 2100m
  • Daybreak Lover  SW  LR $100,000 1400m

Brennan said: “In recent years the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival has undergone a significant transformation, all changes have been made in the best interest of the Industry and these changes have alleviated previous flaws in the conditions.”

“I would expect that the connections of the majority of Stradbroke runners would prefer to be competing in the race knowing that the contemporary form of runners had been considered, rather than knowing a large number of starters had snuck into the race through the back door.”

Queensland Racing has a long history of consulting the Industry (!!!) and whilst this was undertaken prior to the implementation of this amendment, should John (O’Shea) wish to put forward some recommendations I will be more than happy to sit down with him during his stay in Queensland,” Brennan said.

The 2007 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival Brochure was published and distributed to all Interstate and Overseas Stakeholders in January 2007.  All amended conditions were clearly highlighted within this publication to ensure that stakeholders fully understood these amendments.

O'Shea said. "The art of training is to beat the handicapper if you are good enough
Really, I thought it was to train racehorses to race and beat other racehorses.

His comments didn't make much sense to me either Geoff.....
""The art of training is to beat the handicapper if you are good enough. The point of weight-for-age races is not to get handicapped.
"This rule just encourages impropriety . . . I am gobsmacked to be honest.""

I'm not sure what he's trying to say...
That trainers should only try to win races that aren't rehandicapped?
WFA races that weren't subject to rehandicapping were (up until now) the only races in which his horses were trying??
Now his horses won't try in anything??

Bloodstock journo Peter Howard reports in today's C-M that injury-plagued stallion BULLMORE will stand at Nick Nolan's Noralla Stud, Warwick.
By Danehill from Strawberry fair, and originally in the Singo/Harvey camp, the horse looked very promising in his 2yo year and came to Brisbane for the TJ Smith after a southern campaign.  But serious injury forced him out of racing and he was purchased by the Nolans for a goodly sum.  We got a glimpse of his talent when he resumed at EF last year, but he didn't ever regain his earlier form.
His service fee will be $4400.  Good luck to the Nolans.

Heehee, MD.As I lie (that's repose) on my psychiatrist's couch she encourages me to identify and admit my weaknesses.  You've got past that hurdle.
Last night - admittedly affected by drink - I went very close to backing NSW at $2.68.  At half-time I was so angry at myself for having been a whimp I drank a bit more.  At full-time I was so pleased with myself I drank a lot more.

Bryan Guy's tough campaigner MOTIVATE ran another good race yesterday after being wide from the jump.
Looking at his 9th birthday, he's already had a few tries at the Royal Ipswich Cup from memory and is heading that way again.

Good news that Lasoron is apparently back to normal after her misfortune in Saturday's Oaks.  Let's hope she's on track for a Guineas run.

Story by Gary Crispe

Monday, 21 May 2007: The last couple of years has seen the Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) struggle to establish itself as a genuine weight for age contest over a classic distance.

Photo by Racing and Sports" src="http://www.racingandsports.com.au/photogallery/medium/2006/EMIRATES06_0598.JPG" width=175 align=center border=0>
Doomben Cup winner Cinque Cento

It could be the timing of the race, where it is an after thought for the better class gallopers coming off a tough Sydney Autumn campaign looking for a soft kill but form wise they are over the top, such was the case on Saturday with Desert War or it could be we just don’t have the depth of true weight for age gallopers at that distance to go around any more.

What ever it is, this race is one that should be coming under the microscope by the Grading Committee to seriously look at for downgrading.

The 2007 renewal was a very low rating race, in fact several pounds below the five year average, largely due to Desert War and Reigning To Win performing well below their best.

With those gallopers out of the equation, the race was wide open and consistent mare Cinque Cento prevailed in a close finish over NZ mare Gaze with handicapper Pentathon a close third.

Grand Zulu who has not won a race for over three years was a length away in fourth place but a more telling statistic is the fact ten of the eleven runners all finished within five lengths of the winner.

Cinque Cento posted a new master Timeform rating of 111, up a pound form her previous best but at that level she is the lowest Timeform rating winner of the race in more than 15 years.

The race will probably prove a reliable guide to the Group Two Brisbane Cup now run over 2400m under handicap conditions than anything else, but as a true 2000m weight for age contest it was sadly lacking.

Ends…

Never heard of her, dd.
She's now got Messaien, of whom she's a part owner, as well as a few from Bruce Ruming, who owns a breaking and agistment joint on the Sunshine Coast named "Jacaranda" something or other. He used to train them himself.
She's only just kicked off - up until last week, she'd had 3 runners.

She had minor injury problems earlier in the year and was recently sold for $1.125 million. Coolmore bought her, I think.

Have not seen the Stewards Reports but does anyone know what happened to the roughie BIG KEA in Race 2 - appeared to be travelling well in the first half of the field near the rail till about the 1000m then started madly throwing its head about and went backwards from there and ultimately finished at the tail of the field.

I dunno what happened to him, coins.  I tipped him to win the race, and was happy when he settled.  Next thing Taylor seemed to lose control of the horse when the speed slowed and he was out on a limb, pulling, the rest of the race.  I'd say something happened to the steering.

From the Stewards' Report:
Passing the 1300m BIG KEA (J. Taylor) commenced to hang out and did so for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination of BIG KEA failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer G. Hatch was advised that BIG KEA must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before its next start.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Wadham Park complex sold
by Tony Meany

QUEENSLAND businessman Phil Sullivan yesterday confirmed he was buying showpiece training complex Wadham Park at Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Sullivan runs the City Pacific finance company but plans to centralise his racing interests with the purchase of the property, believed to be worth $15 million.

Sullivan takes the controlling share in the property that was developed by former Toll Transport boss Peter Rowsthorn.

"I have about 10 horses in training and they will be transferred to Canungra," Sullivan said.

"The property is under contract and should be completed next month. Obviously it can support a bigger sting but I have had any number of inquiries from people with bigger stings to go there.

"I am a businessman and this looked a good buy. I also have about 15 breeding stock."

Rowsthorn and his trainer Dale Sutton have developed another property just outside Melbourne and will shift base camp.

Sutton last year made international headlines when he bought Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow from Dermot Weld and trained him for the Cox Plate.

Grey Swallow cost $6 million and has not appeared since he ran a distant last to Fields Of Omagh in the Cox Plate.

Rowsthorn is believed to have spent more than $60 million setting up the Wadham Park training complex and stocking it.

The shift of the Sutton stable from Canungra to Victoria will be completed next month.

Sullivan will install David Kelly as the new trainer at Canungra and he knows the property like the back of his hand.

"It is a magnificent set-up," Kelly said. "I trained there for six months and prepared 35 winners. Then I took a job at the sister Wadham Park property in Victoria.

"Canungra has a 2000m grass track with a 600m straight and an uphill finish. There is also a 2000m artificial track."

Surprised at the good odds bet about Shaun Dywer's classy mare Sunday Adieu, today.  Up to $2.90 was matched on Betfair.  For a horse beaten just 5 lengths in a Doomben Cup, that was lucrative.
Was a heady ride by Beasley, too.
She'll now probably head for a spell to be readied for the Spring.

From today's The Courier-Mail:

Top rider Damien Oliver yesterday lost an appeal to the Racing Appeal Tribunal against a suspension and fine imposed for a careless-riding charge from the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on June 9.

Oliver will now serve the nine-meeting sentence and pay the $5000 fine for causing interference on Derby winner Empires Choice.

He will be clear to resume riding on July 20. The Sir John Monash Stakes is run at Caulfield on that day.

Have always like Countess Bathory being a Dracula & have backed her many times.

She ceratinly hasn't performed like she did this time last year when she put 2 wins together at 21/1 & 10/1. Had her both times but have been giving it back ever since.

As a 6yr old mare it might be all past her ,but a change is as good as a holiday. Hopefully Maryann can get a couple more wins from her!

Satisfactory return by speedster Devil Inside on Saturday.  Making the pace, and humping some pudding, she was left exposed to the back-markers.  Sir Monashee was a different horse to the one that turned it up early at Ipswich three weeks ago.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
It's Adieu for now
by Bart Sinclair

ANOTHER win to the in-form Sunday Adieu in the Grafton Cup on Thursday will not earn her a spring carnival opportunity.

Trainer Shaun Dwyer is steadfast in his resolve to give Sunday Adieu the spring in the paddock to set her for a big calendar in 2008.

Sunday Adieu is likely to be the favourite for the $160,000 cup over 2400m on the back of her two most convincing wins in successive starts at Randwick and the Kensington track.

Dwyer is extremely confident about another victory at Grafton but he won't be present. He's off on a family holiday to New Zealand this week.

"I'll be disappointed if she doesn't win with ordinary luck in running," Dwyer said.

"Danny Beasley rode her in work on Saturday morning and is adamant she has improved again.

"While I expect her to win I still feel, even as a rising five-year-old, she isn't mature enough yet to go to the level needed for the big races in the spring.

"That's for next year.

"My plan is to give her a couple of months off and then about six runs in the autumn, another break next winter and then head to the Melbourne Cup."

Dwyer has had only one Grafton Cup starter previously, when he won the race with Pacific Dancer in 2004 and then headed to the spring where the horse struggled to come up.

Trainer Brian Smith is hoping to have both Bikkie Tin Blues (Scott Seamer) and Scattergun (Ric McMahon) lining up in the cup.

He is hoping for rain midweek to soften the track for Scattergun who ran his best race since April when he finished second in the Caloundra City Cup on a heavy track nine days ago.

McMahon, who has ridden Scattergun in many of his races, was bypassed for the four-year-old's last four runs when Kelvin Wharton, Bobby El-Issa, Jim Cassidy and Brad Pengelly were tried without success.

Shane Scriven's hopes of grabbing an unexpected premiership title could hinge on an appeal against a careless-riding suspension at the Racing Appeals Tribunal today.

As things stand, the jockeys title leaderboard has Glen Colless (56 wins) ahead of Jim Byrne (54) and Scriven (51).

Colless did not ride at Eagle Farm on Saturday because of a suspension and Byrne picked up a suspension of nine meetings, taking him out of action until the last meeting of the season on July 28.

Byrne is eligible to ride at Eagle Farm on Wednesday before he begins his sentence. He does have the avenue of an appeal and seeking a stay of proceedings.

There are six more metropolitan meetings before the end of the season.

Good run again by Nasa, scorch.  Not sure the inside run suited it.
One of Brisbane's most consistent sprinters, Aim So High (Shinko Forest-Au Pair Girl), has been retired following a tendon injury.  He "bled" in a Sydney campaign in December, but came back for a good win at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke day. While he's sometimes shown shyness when it came to getting to the winning post, he's won $182,000 for connections in his 5 wins from 31 starts.

Will be interesting to see how Michael Nolan's promising performer, EASILY DONE, performs in the first tomorra.
The horse didn't do a lot in his earlier preps, although he looked smart when he trounced his Mdn opponents at Royal Ipswich 12 months ago.  He's won alll three runs on his home track this time in, and looks a certain city winner.  Taking on a NMWLY field tomorrow, he's found a nice draw and is claiming 3 kg for Ms A Taylor.
He's another of the Easy Rocking progeny doing very well of late.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Reluctant Ryan quits Coast
by Bart Sinclair

TOP trainer Gerald Ryan reluctantly is giving up his fulltime stable on the Gold Coast.

Ryan, 52, is handing over his Coast operation to longtime deputy Bruce Hill to concentrate on his Rosehill stable in Sydney.

"I love Queensland and love the racing up there but it's become increasingly hard to find the time to juggle between the two stables with so many race meetings these days," Ryan said.

"For the past two years the Gold Coast stable has lost money. Rosehill has been propping up my business.

"Bruce is keen to have another go at training in his own right and most of my clients have agreed to leave the horses in the Coast stable with him.

"Bruce has been with me since I set up at the Coast over nine years ago and we have had a great association. I think he will do well on his own.

"I still intend to campaign horses in Queensland if I think they are the right types and the races suit. But they will go up in my name with my staff."

Apart from his large horse and client connection to Sydney Ryan also has family ties with his son Blake, a producer at TVN, and daughter Tai who works in the events division at the Sydney Turf Club.

Ryan has been a splendid contributor to Queensland racing in the past decade. His best wins were multiple successes in the Queensland Guineas with Saxon, Magnifier and Regent Street and the Queensland Oaks and Winter Stakes with Mon Mekki.

A virus which went through his two stables last spring has limited Ryan's opportunities but he has a strong base of young, untried horses.

"I went through my Sydney list a few weeks ago and I had 52 horses in work and 32 of them were unraced," Ryan said.

In the coming months Ryan plans to boost his Sydney numbers up close to the maximum 70 he can accommodate with his on-course stabling.

Ryan thinks there is a Magic Millions prospect in his rising two-year-old stocks. He likes the way a Danzero colt related to his Saturday Doomben winner Rapid Jacko might come up early in the new season.

Hill, also 52, is highly credentialled.

Originally from New Zealand where he began working with his father Frank at Pukekohe, Hill trained for six years but then came to Australia.

He worked for Geoff Murphy for more than six years at a time when Sovereign Red and Caulfield-Melbourne Cup winner Gurner's Lane were the flagbearers.

"I was travelling foreman for Geoff for four years and then the Melbourne foreman for another two years before he encouraged me to take out my own licence again," Hill said.

"When my biggest client died I sold my property at Mornington and moved to the Gold Coast where I worked for Greg Mance for a few months.

"Then Gerald started up and I worked for him from day one at the Gold Coast."

Hill, who has to formally gain Gold Coast Turf Club approval to train at the track, will take up a lease on Ryan's current Ascot Lodge stable complex which is owned by one of owner Les Cowell's family companies.

The race was run a farcical speed.  He went back to last, but didn't settle well.  The small field sprinted from the 600. I thought he was in trouble but he raced down the centre of the track to hit the lead at the 100 and win in good style.

I know he is young but I think he is over hyped and pretty ordinary.
He is on more horses in the betting than any apprentice in memory and slaughters more than his share. He is useless in a finish even compared to that other  apprentice with a famous Dad from Sydney who looked outstanding in a finish on his first winner yesterday. .?
For the amount of chances he has had I reckon he is very disappointing.

I think I wrote somewhere last week that he seems to have been around for quite a while, yet still claiming 3 kg.  He's also had plenty of opportunities, in my opinion.  Plenty of trainers are happy to put him on. But they still need luck to get the winners home, e.g. Craiglea Emma.
I'm happy enough to back Coome, but I wouldn't see him as a future Rodd or Purton.  And I doubt you would, either.

From today's The Courier-Mail:
Lacey's riding high
by Bart Sinclair
WHEN she gets a fair chance Lacey Morrison is a determined young lady.

On Saturday, Morrison, 23, produced another daring and skilful ride to win the $100,000 Jupiters Townsville Cup on rising nine-year-old Legal Brief.

It was a deserved victory for Legal Brief who was third and second in the race in the past two years.

Morrison admits there have been lengthy periods of frustration since she completed her apprenticeship three years ago.

"It seems every time I was starting to get some momentum I was injured or suspended," Morrison said.

Even Morrison's northern stint with partner Greg Wehlow, Legal Brief's trainer, has been interrupted by another suspension. She only resumed on Saturday.

The cup ride was lauded by all and experienced racecaster Wayne Wilson, who was there, gave her top marks.

"It was a superb ride. Lacey managed to find the fence midrace from barrier nine so that was a top effort," Wilson said.

"Then she waited until the turn to make her move and managed to find a run between horses to give Legal Brief every chance.

"And she didn't lack anything in vigour compared to the men at the finish. It was a very polished display."

Wehlow, who moved north from his Gold Coast base with eight horses, now has a team of 22 as his focus turns to the next northern carnival in Cairns.

Last September, Morrison looked back on track when she had a very successful time at the northern carnivals culminating with victory on Legal Brief in the Cairns Amateurs Cup.

She was disqualified for two months at the Amateurs meeting on a charge of deliberately striking another rider with her whip.

That was quashed on appeal but the process distracted her from racing.

In January, Morrison had surgery to her right knee, injured when she was kicked by a horse a year ago. This time it was four months on the sideline.

When she's fit and in form Morrison is an aggressive competitor who is a much better rider than her results from the past three years might indicate.

Many believe there is unfinished business for Morrison in Brisbane.

At the metropolitan tracks where she was highly successful a few years ago she is rarely sighted any more.

Morrison is good enough to be a solid competitor in the big smoke.

There should be a limit to the number of syllables permissible in a horses name. eg
KAT-TA-SHIK-AK-U-TAM-A = 7 , too many.
KA-KA-KA-KA-TIE = 5 , OK but rule could vary if the word was not in any dictionary.
DIS-CRET-ION-AR-Y=5 , OK as in dictionary
PRIN-CES-GIN-A-CHEN-KA =6, OK.
I don't know if I have broken the above down into correct syllables, but you get the gist.

Coome goes from villain to hero

Star Rockhampton apprentice Adrian Coome proved a quick learner when he went from villain to hero following a stewards' grilling at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Coome incurred the wrath of chief steward John Hackett following his ill-judged ride on $2.25 favourite Laletta who could only manage fifth to the Rob Heathcote-trained Notre Amour ($10) in the uncharted.com.au Hcp (1400m).

However, Coome bounced back to show more initiative to win the following race on the Alan Bailey-trained $3.20 favourite Master Denis in the XXXX Gold Hcp (1200m).

Hackett quizzed Coome and the filly's trainer George Osborne at length over the performance of Laletta who was having her first Brisbane start following two unbeaten runs at Rockhampton.

The Dash For Cash filly had won her Rockhampton debut by 6-1/2 lengths and her last run by almost nine lengths on July 13.

Coome, who will soon begin a month's trial in Brisbane with Lawrie Mayfield-Smith, was caught three wide on Laletta after she jumped slowly and was back in the field.

"The instructions were to have her where she was comfortable but I could see I wasn't going to get in any closer so I went back on her," Coome said.

"I probably made a bad decision not to go forward on her from the 800 metres. When I did the form I thought there would be speed on but the pace was slow."

Osborne was critical of Coome's ride and told stewards the apprentice showed a lack of initiative by not going forward on the three-year-old in the middle stages.

"I was critical of his ride and I told him so," Osborne said.

"I thought in the middle stages when the pace was slow he should have gone forward but he didn't."

Stewards took no action against either party and Coome learned his lesson quickly with a brilliant ride to win on Master Denis in the following race.

Bailey believes Coome has a bright future in Brisbane after winning both the Rockhampton and Mackay jockeys' premierships last season as an apprentice.

Meanwhile, trainer Barry Baldwin's ex-foreman Shane Iverson landed his first Brisbane winner as a trainer when Cocktail Shaker led throughout to win the Schweppes Hcp (1600m).

Iverson served two stints with Baldwin, his first for three years which included strapping Baggio when the sprinter was runner-up in the Group One Stradbroke Hcp at Eagle Farm in 1994 and his latest for two years when the former Brisbane premiership-winning trainer returned from Macau four years ago.

Iverson has held his trainer's licence on and off for a number of years but was only relicensed in March this year.

"I've got 10 in work at Charleville and I've just had plaster taken off my ankle which I broke six weeks ago when I fell from a horse," Iverson said.

Jockey Chris Whiteley was suspended for seven meetings starting from midnight on Saturday for causing interference on his mount Nuclear Speed in the harvested.com.au Plate (1400m).

Coome's ride on Laletta, a hot favourite, was a zero out of ten.

He showed no initiative and as a result of his woeful ride the favourite had no hope. His ride warranted a suspension, no doubt about it.

The fact he bounced back in the next race and rode the winner is irrelevant.

Doubledee, couldnt help but notice your post 144 re October Sky and the dig at Best Bet's Howard Walter for leaving him out of the top 5 at at E Farm last Sat.
For those that didnt pay attention October Sky finished a moderate 6th over 1600m when $3.20 fav.
Howard made the comment in his preview on 4TAB on raceday morning that he was concerned that October Sky could revert to his staying European staying tendencies at any any point.
Bravo Howard, boo Doubledee.

Ah, fishing is so easy aint, it ?

Doubledee, you took a position to pot Howard Walter of Best Bets for leaving the horse out of the top five, he was right, you were wrong.

I'd not of bothered to reply to the post had you of simply made the statement that October Sky was a good thing and he would be short, particularly if you backed it up with some logic.
Walter offered some logic as to why he felt October Sky was a risk, which is particularly useful when, as you suggested, the horse was going to be short.

But it's worth noting that many saw October Sky as an unlucky runner.  Maybe it wasn't the best of rides, maybe the horse IS a stayer, maybe the horse didn't wanna be at the races last week, maybe it was just the run of the race....

I back October Sky for the place and was very dissappointed to say the least with the ride of J Byrne.  I will be interested to see whether he rides it next time.  (I have a high regard for J Byrne and I am not a knocker of jockeys just because I lose my money on there rides.)

You are much kinder than I am in that case FatPrawn.

If a jockey rides a bad race particularly in situations where the horse is well drawn I reckon they deserve to be criticised and that goes double if they are on a hotpot. It's a tough game and punters (and owners) are the ones that keep the show going.

I am wary of most riders in Brisbane especially out of towners as I don't think the depth is all that great. The apprentice ranks are currently pretty thin compared with when say Rodd and Purton were plying their trade up there - there are certainly no Sebastian Murphy's or Tye Anglands about the place.

DD, I agree with you re October Sky. I think he is a lovely big strong type and has plenty of scope. It will be interesting to see what distance Kelly elects for now. He will be hard to place now given he has won only two races but really stuck in C6 or restricted RS1/2/3 races.

Interesting scenes following the second last race at the Gold Coast yesterday.
Top local hoop Chris Whiteley earned the wrath of a well known local punter following his ride on Manilla Warrior.

The punter gave Whiteley a barrage of abuse from the grandstand, with Whiteley returning fire in a highly visible verbal slanging match.

Things got very heated with the punter moving  to the ground floor outside the mounting yard, with Whiteley advancing towards the punter with the pair still trading verbal blows.

Manila Warriors connections, headed by Ken Jones Racing Manager Merlyn Connelly, stepped in to defuse the tense situation in support of Whiteley.

The Alan Bailey prepared Manila Warrior was a solidly supported $2.35 favourite.

Manila Warrior was caught three deep throughout worse than midfield before being pulled up by Whiteley to finish some 15 lengths from the winner and all the way leader Sentorian.

Stewards lose on Cropp appeal

Top New Zealand jockey Lisa Cropp has won another battle to escape a penalty from the Brisbane Cup incident that initially cost her a three-month suspension.

The Racing Appeal Tribunal yesterday handed down a judgment against Queensland Racing Limited stewards.

Cropp was suspended for allegedly waving her whip before the finish line in the Cup at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Stewards claimed the action had cost her mount, Lilakyn, victory in a photo margin of a couple of centimetres to Newport.

Cropp won at the first level of appeal at the QRL, but chief steward Reid Sanders took the matter to the higher RAT.

"I'm disappointed," Sanders said last night.

"I thought we had a good case.

"I haven't spoken yet to our legal advisers but I doubt if we will be taking the matter further."

The Courier-Mail's breeding scribe, Peter Howard, reports in today's press that the enigmatic Platinum Scissors has 17 mares in foal at Plaintree Farms on the Darling Downs.
A full brother to Redoute's Choice, PS sent plenty of punters to the wall, and has had fertility problems at stud.  Now in the hands of well-known vet David Pascoe, he now looks to have at least a limited future as a sire.

DI failed in Sydney last run after working pretty hard. This will be her first try anti-clockwise.  She'll certainly ensure there's no loafing from the gates.
Let's hope she measures up.  If not, I'd say she's off to stud.

From today's The Sunday Mail:
by Bart Sinclair
THE outbreak of the equine flu will cause a review of the planned injection of $4.8 million into prizemoney in Queensland.

Queensland Racing Limited was set to announce later this month where the added money would be directed.

That timetable now is on hold and there may have to be a reduction in the funds available after the loss of betting revenue due to the horse flu epidemic.

QR chief operating officer Malcolm Tuttle has calculated the direct loss to the industry from a stoppage of races around Australia was about $1.5 million per week.

While racing is possible at some Australian venues, the haemorrhaging will at least be minimised. If this virus jumps borders into Victoria and South Australia the downturn in revenue will be catastrophic.

The virus problem is not over yet in thoroughbreds in Queensland.

The news of outbreaks at Warwick Farm and Hawkesbury is sobering.

There are a lot of minefields on the road ahead and it will take some deft sidestepping and plenty of luck to find safe ground.

Was a very good run by Chinchilla Rose on Saturday.
She seemed unhappy boxed up on the fence, and was near last with 150 to go.  When she saw a bit of space over the last bit she knuckled down and ran on well.
In previous runs she's had plenty of room.  The good draw looked to be her undoing on Saturday.

Plenty of discussions in Brisbane race circles about the plan to run a race meeting at Deagon on Friday.  Many of us are concerned for the safety of the track for racing, plus lack of infrastructure, broadcast facilities, etc etc. But full creditto QRL for making the moves to give Deagon-owned horses access to some prizemoney.
IMO, if there are no known cases of EI by Wednesday in the horse populations at Deagon, Doomben or Eagle Farm, there would be little (probably ZERO) risk of moving the Deagon horses to either Doomben or Eagle Farm on Friday.  The Deagon-based horses could then race against one another on a track set up for racing (and betting).
Obviously there'd need to be approval from DPI to move the horses, but I'd think that would be justified - provided there are no cases identified in the Brisbane's throroughbred population to that time.

The track was against Chinchilla Rose as well which added to the merit of the run in what was a very good field.

I think the track might be safe DD but do they have somewhere to get something to eat.
Used to be a good fish and chip shop over the road when I was a young hoodlum hanging around that area..

Good question, gratlog.  A punter has gotta eat.  Right now, I'm not sure if there'll be public admitted.  Any bookies?  totes?  toilets?  bars? photo finish? stewards' fims?
Track safety is a prime concern, to me.  Strolling around in a barrier trial is a lot different to a race for money, IMO.

Only seems like yesterday that as kids we would ride our ponies onto the old track and pretend we were on the top horses of the day while we galloped around the track.lolIt was fifty years ago which is a bit of a worry in itself.

I reckon you're a shoe-in for a member on the New Deagon Race Club Board, gratlog.
Lots of us would have looked back to the 70s when IMASHADOW won the 2nd at Bendigo yesterday.
The Lyndhurst-bred Ima Shadow loved to lead, and won a stack of good races in Brisbane.  I think he raced in Sydney on one occasion at least.  Mel Schumacher won plenty on him.
The Brisbane version was out of Meanmi Shadow, but for the life of me I can't recall his sire.

OK, all cleared up. Wayne Wilson has called with the following info.
Ima Shadow was by Lyndhurst's imported sire, Lysander II, out of Eye Shadow.  Meanmi Shadow (QTC Oaks winner from memory) was a full sister to Ima Shadow.
WW recalls Eye Shadow as being quite small, but a very smart sprinter.  She won a Doomben Newmarket.
Eye Shadow was around at the time of champion Eye Liner - both trained by WW's uncle, Jack Wilson - but was not related to Eye Liner.

Followers of this thread cleaned up in a big way when Sydney champ Thorn Park won the Stradbroke in 2004.
Pleasing news that his progeny are showing promise in NZ.
From breednet.com.au

Windsor Park Stud's exciting freshman sire Thorn Park (AUS) (Spinning World) has been making waves at New Zealand's Trials scene recently, with two winners and two placegetters resulting from four individuals to step out.

Winning her 650m Catchweight trial in a time of 0.41.3 the Graeme Rogerson and Garry Newham trained filly ex Zahra (NZ) (Zabeel) (dam of Gr.3 winner, Mr Ubiquitous) was the first to stamp her class, racing home for success by half-a-length at Cambridge Jockey Club on August 14.

The Spinning World (USA) sire was to the fore again three weeks later with a second filly crossing for a two length win atTe Tekoon September 4.

Trained by Roger James, the filly ex J Lo (NZ) (Unbridled's Song) raced home over 600m in a time of 0.34.38.

Unbeaten at two, Thorn Park (AUS)won nine of his 22 starts for trainer Bob Thomsen and bowed out of racing in the best possible way when winning the Gr.1 QTC Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) in Brisbane.

I noticed a few write ups about people ignoring the rules there last week re the quarantine.
Just wondering who's responsibity is that? The stewards or special security?

BTW, Who is the new Racing Minister?
Surely they cannot leave it with Fraser. lol He has enough to worry about .
I hear that no one wants the job.  Anna has less interest in racing than Pete , and he did'nt give two hoots.

I'm not sure but I think Arthur Lister has a book out and I was wondering if anyone would know where we could buy it.
I think Arthur lives down Banyo way these days.
